I'm not aware of the Illustrated History of San Francisco, and wonder whether the actual book being referenced to is G. T. Brown's lithographs in Moore and Depuy's Illustrated History of San Mateo County, published in 1878. To someone in the UK, San Mateo County is San Francisco.
