Copyedit

edit

Hi,

I will be copyediting this article, provided that you are available in case I need clarification or have questions. I look forward to working with you! --Malachirality (talk) 02:02, 30 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hi! Sorry, I've been away for several days. I'll be happy to answer any questions you have -- just ask here or on my talk page. Thanks! Kane5187 (talk) 20:35, 1 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Are there any over-arching concerns or prose issues that you would like to see addressed? I'm reading over the lead and first section, and while there are some minor issues (too many parentheses IMO), the style and "voice" of the prose seems more or less good. Were there are specific problems/concerns regarding the text that were brought up in FAC/peer review/etc.? --Malachirality (talk) 21:25, 1 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

There wasn't anything specific, I just wanted to have a copyedit done for the FAC to get another pair of eyes on the article and ensure that it's up to snuff. However, the FAC was closed just today, so the copyedit isn't a pressing issue anymore. In fact, there's probably a lot more important articles in line, so I'll withdraw the copyedit request and resubmit it at a later time when it's represented at FAC. Thanks for your help, though! • Ok then. I read through most of the article and didn't find any big problems. Just be sure to use "logical quotation", which means that punctuation marks go outside the quote marks unless the "sense" of the punctuation is a part of the quoted material. You might also consider using the em dash to replace some parentheses in the case of longer parenthetical phrases. I'm going to move this over to proofreading then, where it will probably languish forever until someone comes along and takes a look at it. If you have any questions, feel free to leave a note on my talk page. --Malachirality (talk) 16:44, 2 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Relationship between DMS and DHMC

edit

I think I need clarification on DMS and DHMC. This could help the article.

DMS is not DHMC. There's a Dean of DMS (S.Spielberg). There's a separate President of Dartmouth Hitchcock Clinic and a President of Mary Hitchcock Hospital.

DHMC may not be a legal entity. See http://www.dhmc.org/webpage.cfm?site_id=2&org_id=566&gsec_id=0&sec_id=0&item_id=30016 The fact that the VA is listed suggests this as the VA is owned by the US Government. There is a separate President of Mary Hitchcock Hospital and a President of Dartmouth Hitchcock Clinic.

DMS is this http://www.dhmc.org/webpage.cfm?site_id=2&org_id=566&morg_id=0&sec_id=0&gsec_id=39&item_id=41399

I think there is some overlap. The Chairman of the Department of Surgery of Dartmouth is one and the same Chairman of the hospital surgery department.(need confirmation, difficult because the medical school website surgery department link is the hospital surgery website - see http://dms.dartmouth.edu/about/academics/ ) Congolese fufu (talk) 04:44, 3 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Understanding the situation is important to write the article. I think medical students do their first 2 years at the medical school then do rotations at DHMC. Faculty members who are M.D.'s are both DMS/DHMC. Some Ph.D. faculty members are DMS only. So the programs are mixed into both DMS and DHMC but the WP article is DMS only. This is becoming clear but citations search continues (and is necesary for the article.) Congolese fufu (talk) 04:54, 3 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

I wrote to Dartmouth asking the above. The answer they give will be original research, but it will guide me to reliable sources which will have the answer. Congolese fufu (talk) 03:10, 4 January 2008 (UTC)Reply
According to this (and as noted in the article), DMS is part of DHMC, which is a broad organization including MHMH, the VA Clinic, and the Dartmouth-Hitchcock clinic. Kane5187 (talk) 05:58, 4 January 2008 (UTC)Reply
Regarding the GA, I certainly haven't given up on this article for FA. I just figured that in the meantime while it's being improved, I think it already meets GA criteria and would like to see it begin to receive recognition for its quality. A GA review, even if successful, will likely bring additional suggestions for improvement and bridge the lengthy gap between B-class rating and FA. Kane5187 (talk) 06:10, 4 January 2008 (UTC)Reply
I wrote to DHMC (ok, original research) and they told me MHMH sponsers the residencies but that DMS faculty run it. See www.acgme.org > search programs/sponsers > sponsoring organizations > New Hampshire. So that website confirms what DHMC said. The DMS chairman of surgery, for example, is also the MHMH surgery chairman. Sorry for being picky but at least we are precise now. Congolese fufu (talk) 01:40, 5 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

a little research needed?

edit

A little research, not quite original research needed? Are some of the faculty well known? Perhaps we should look at the department websites to see if any faculty are well known. Sometimes the chairman is. Sometimes another professor is. Then we can use non-Dartmouth websites to confirm this.

I would like to make this article so good that nobody will object on content grounds and then only will object on technicalities that can be fixed. Congolese fufu (talk) 02:05, 11 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Choice of alumni

edit

How was the choice of notable alumni chosen? I don't know Dartmouth but I would be afraid that the list of alumni are not notable or that some notable people are left out.

What we may have here is a list of alumni that have Wikipedia article and, by inference, are notable by Wikipedia criteria, which is not the same thing as truly notable and famous.

It seems to be easier to research and fix the notable faculty but the alumni is a tough question and problem to fix. I will be thinking about the answer. Congolese fufu (talk) 02:02, 13 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Again, I don't see why using just those who have Wikipedia articles is a problem. It provides notability, prevents us from inserting just any old alum (or faculty member) in there, and is the overarching system used at virtually every other article on educational institutions. GA pass

This article easily passes GA. Good work. I only changed a few minor things as I read over it. Wrad (talk) 02:26, 22 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Dana Hall

edit

Dana Hall has been renamed Anonymous Hall [sic] and is no longer associated with Dartmouth Medical School. Therefore I deleted a clause that cited both it and a lawn, the latter of which struck me as an irrelevant detail. (Crissccrossed with concrete sidewalks, the lawn is nothing like a typical college quadrangle or green.) As collateral damage, references to Remsen and Vail went with the clause. Perhaps they should come back. Mdmi (talk) 01:39, 27 March 2020 (UTC)Reply

Statistics for the school are outdated, citing numbers from 2007 and 2013. History section stops at 2012. Uncited passages are also present throughout the article. Z1720 (talk) 02:27, 18 November 2023 (UTC)Reply
