Changing title

Title should be 'COVID 19 outbreak in India'. Souniel Yadav (talk) 06:49, 3 March 2020 (UTC)

@Souniel Yadav: The title is in sync with actual issue 2019–20 coronavirus pandemic. I think the title is apt for now. Change not required. SaiP (talk) 09:52, 12 March 2020 (UTC)

Confirmed cases in infobox

I see that Indians in Diamond Princess are also counted in the infobox but is it right? As we are stating India in location, we should use this count to only cases inside Indian territory. Others can be mentioned elsewhere the article. It is too cluttered as it now. Shanze1 (talk) 14:56, 4 March 2020 (UTC)

WP:ECP lock

Can someone provide me the rationale behind an extended confirmed protection? I have seen the disruptive editing episodes but even the main page is only semi-protected. For an article that documents a current event with rapidly changing information, a WP:ECP status is rather limiting. We need as many hands as possible to keep the content up to date. Yes, that also mean constant error checking by the editors. – StreetSodatalk 14:24, 11 March 2020 (UTC)

@Streetsoda: : As per WP:RPP request it was requested to protect it due to IP and new accounts vandalism.

This the exact convo. from there :- Semi-protection: - IPs and new accounts are adding fake information and rumours. M4DU7 (talk) 07:42, 10 March 2020 (UTC)

(Non-administrator comment) @NJA: From my understanding of WP:ARBIPA and WP:ACDS extended confirmed protection is appropriate for this situation (if I am wrong please correct me). If an admin wants to use EC + PC I would recommend extending PC to two months that way IP and new accounts would need their edits reviewed after the EC ends. @Amol845: Please provide a reliable source per the above. –MJLTalk 16:12, 11 March 2020 (UTC)

source for confirmed cases data should be consistent.

if we are using MoHFW or worldometers or BNO or JHU, we should be consistent. Also , i'm not sure the MoHFW is update in realtime, the data always seems to lag the other sources. Often this page doesn't match the main wiki page either. Can we discuss what source we are using ? Gegu0284 (talk) 17:58, 11 March 2020 (UTC)

@Gegu0284: currently it is inconsistent and not much people are editing here after this article have been locked for extended users only and i do think semiprotection to be decreased for autoconfirmed users. And for the source Main article is using worldometer so to be in sink, i recommend we should use that as source. Mayankj429 (talk) 18:14, 11 March 2020 (UTC)

  • The MoHFW source is definitely lagging behind by a day. But the real problem is, some of the news sources are using this MoHFW number thinking that it is up to date, which in turn causes a mistake in their own real-time count.
  • Worldometers table has been showing India's count as 62 for the past 24 hours, making me believe that either it copies the number from our main page table (which has also been 62 for the past 24 hours) or doesn't update the number regularly.
  • John Hopkins updates the numbers within a few hours, so it is better than the above two sources when it comes to updated numbers.
  • Among news sources, I have noticed that only The Hindu is able to make the distinction between state-reported cases and the lagging MoHFW confirmed cases [1]. I suggest we use this and show both numbers like the United States outbreak page. M4DU7 (talk) 21:34, 11 March 2020 (UTC)

@M4DU7: @Gegu0284:

  • Seeing the confusion around it is best to follow official numbers from Mohfw as this is sensetive issue. They have updated total cases as 73 today. For timeline we can use other sources to expand article.

Mayankj429 (talk) 06:12, 12 March 2020 (UTC)

  • MoHFW has updated the new number. Please check http://www.mohfw.gov.in/. Could someone change the number? I am unable to edit it. It is now 73 as told above. saputrevu24 06:42, 12 March 2020 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by SaiP (talkcontribs)

@M4DU7: @Gegu0284: @Mayankj429:

  • Can't we use the news channels as a additional news source? SaiP (talk) 07:01, 12 March 2020 (UTC)

@SaiP: They can be used but problem was that tommorow, various news sources were showing different no. of cases, varying from 60 to 70 because state goverment declares new cases firstly and then next day Mohfw adds them all and update. Many News sources were adding cases themselves and were missing on some cases, while some were only showing the cases from Mohfw which was 60 tomorrow. Mayankj429 (talk) 07:40, 12 March 2020 (UTC)

@M4DU7: @Gegu0284: @Mayankj429: news channels are not reliable; plus we need by state info. We can't say 73 because of worldometers and not have a statewise breakdown. I suggest we show the statewise breakdown as per MoHFW, with a "total according to MoHFW"; but also against the total the Worldometers number as a "current total"

@M4DU7: @Gegu0284: @Mayankj429: - If that's the case, we would have to rely on https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/ and http://www.mohfw.gov.in/. We have no other go. And as someone said, we might have to add as per Worldometer, the count is so-and-so and per MoHFW, the count is so-and-so. What do you think guys? In that way, we can keep a sync with the two official government-level sources. SaiP (talk) 08:43, 12 March 2020 (UTC)

  • I agree use both worldometer and Mohfw in sink to update. -Mayankj429 (talk)
Ok as of now the MoHFW website is correct. Will make the change if the problem reoccurs. Also, I will take out the foreign national footnote since we now have in the table itself Gegu0284 (talk) 09:49, 12 March 2020 (UTC)
MoHFW now seems to be updating it regularly, but it is still not real time number. We can use the The Hindu tracker for this purpose as well https://www.thehindu.com/sci-tech/health/covid-19-interactive-map-confirmed-cases-in-india/article31041690.ece M4DU7 (talk) 12:09, 12 March 2020 (UTC)

The Hindu live case tracker

The most reliable source of news in India has a real-time tracker with an interactive map - https://www.thehindu.com/sci-tech/health/covid-19-interactive-map-confirmed-cases-in-india/article31041690.ece This can be used to update the number of confirmed cases in real time. M4DU7 (talk) 12:07, 12 March 2020 (UTC)

@M4DU7: : Seems reliable, can be used with keeping Mohfw as a secondary source as well in my opinion. - Mayankj429 (talk) 12:18, 12 March 2020 (UTC)

Added both in a similar way as that of the United States outbreak article. M4DU7 (talk) 12:37, 12 March 2020 (UTC)
@Mayankj429: What would be the primary source then?
@Mayankj429: @M4DU7: Can we use news from twitter verified accounts them as source and add here as a reference? What do you think guys? Off late, there is so much traffic on twitter.
@SaiP: - Twitter is not considered reliable source for most of the time for Wikipedia, to know more see WP:TWITTER - Mayankj429 (talk) 13:24, 12 March 2020 (UTC)

@M4DU7: @Mayankj429: The number in the hindu live tracker does not seem to match with the interactive map count. Can we rely on it? The Headline shows 78. But when sum up the count in each based on the interactive map, it totals up to 74. SaiP (talk) 17:07, 12 March 2020 (UTC)

I just counted it and it adds up to 78. The Hindu is definitely reliable. M4DU7 (talk) 10:01, 13 March 2020 (UTC)

I think you should remove thehindu as source only keep Mohfw its create confusion and only trust government data no publicity of any private organization please. Kakariyachirag (talk) 18:20, 15 March 2020 (UTC)

A reputable source like The Hindu does not need "publicity" from a Wikipedia page. That source was added as it was maintaining a live count of the confirmed cases. MoHFW don't update their numbers regularly, so they are often 10-20 cases behind the actual count, as you can see from this version. Anyway, since others seem to be perfectly fine with outdated numbers, The Hindu source has been removed now. M4DU7 (talk) 00:04, 16 March 2020 (UTC)

Need sources for Timeline expansion

I have added as much cases to timeline which I could find. Still 3 cases are missing as per total by goverment and after looking to time line and Mohfw data i found that 1 from Delhi, 1 from UP, and 1 from Ladakh are the three cases for which we don't have news sources, I do have a guess that 1 ladakh case is the Iran pilgrimage case who was previously a suspected case. So can anyone help and add these 3 cases with source to timeline. It will be helpfull. Thanks - Mayankj429 (talk) 12:08, 12 March 2020 (UTC)

Statement of Ilyas Sharafuddin shouldn't be here

The statement about wrath of Allah on Chinese is ineligible. It's nothing more than some non-noted person uttering about Chinese for persecution of Uighurs. The statement is barely of anything consequential or note.

When I search about Ilyas Sharafuddin he seems to hve very few real news worthy items related to his name. His only real presence seems to be on debates or some sensationalist channels like Times Now overamplifying his statement as news-worthy when only very very few sites, including some that are not even about reliable or real news have highlighted it.

Being an Indian I know all too well how some organizations will cover just about anything to get a "story" even if it's not really news-worthy. Why should some Muslim cleric or any religious figure's irrelevant statement should be included? Please consider removing.

It cannot be called xenophobia or racism in any manner. Belief in divine justice doesn't equate to that, even if it's about someone in another country. Totally irrelevant and unrelated statement. SainiRori (talk) 21:13, 14 March 2020 (UTC)

The number of cured patients

Earlier the number of cured patients from coronavirus was 11, and now 9, how did this happen?? Were the people earlier cured of the disease got ill again ?? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Hardaat Singh Baath (talkcontribs) 12:53, 15 March 2020 (UTC)

It happened when MoHFW changed the numbers for some reason(from 10 to 9). But the 11th (in Tamil Nadu) is not confirmed by the ministry or others (except some local govt. tweets and news citing the tweet), hence left out. Shanze1 (talk) 15:34, 15 March 2020 (UTC)

This was added in the response section:

On 15 March,The Bharatiya Janata Party will conduct a public awareness campaign to prevent corona virus infection in Rajasthan.[76] BJP state president Satish Poonia said that people will be made aware through social media for Corona virus through a public awareness campaign.

I think that mention of party level activities here should be minimised since if that starts happening the article will be flooded with news like content. This should be shortened and paraphrased extensively, or removed entirely. Maybe only emphasise national level and other noteworthy events. DTM (talk) 02:35, 16 March 2020 (UTC)

Unintended effects

A small mention of unintended effects can be made such as the usage of "namaste". There is enough media coverage for this. DTM (talk) 02:44, 16 March 2020 (UTC)

Updated map to show difference in quantities of cases by state

I've updated the existing map to show quantity of cases instead of simply yes/no/suspected. The data is sourced from the table in the Statistics section.

Key of the legend I've used, you can look at a test legend here: 2020_coronavirus_pandemic_in_Sweden

  30+ confirmed cases
  10–29 confirmed cases
  1–9 confirmed cases
  suspected cases

I feel this is necessary because currently, the map makes it seem like all states are in an equally dire situation, when currently India is in better shape than most countries.

P.S. I couldn't figure out how to update the existing file (here: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:COVID-19_Outbreak_Cases_in_India.svg ), so I uploaded a new one, but ideally could you update the existing file with this one please?

Thanks Vyder (talk) 09:33, 16 March 2020 (UTC)

Done Yes, it was needed. Thanks for the effort. I've updated the existing file. You can do this yourself in future by going here: File:COVID-19 Outbreak Cases in India.svg where you can find "Upload a new version of this file" below the File history table. Statistics with Timeline

It would be helpful if we could include the following statistics along a horizontal day-wise timeline: 1. New Cases split by Source: Did the person get it from outside India, or did they get it from someone who already had? 2. Home Care, Hospitalized, Recovered, Dead: How are they all doing now now? At home, or in the hospital? Recovered or dead? 3. Split by States: Maybe once we have more data, we can split timeline by states --BhaskarNS (talk) 10:27, 16 March 2020 (UTC)

In a bizarre statement, parliamentarian Ramesh Bidhuri of Bharatiya Janata Party claimed that as per experts using Namaste as a greeting prevents contamination from the Covid-19, but using Arabic greetings like Adab or As-salamu alaykum does not as it directs the air into the mouth.[1][2]

CASES BY STATE

Please, Indian friends, you ought to create a box with the cases per state in India. It must be well documented to outside reliable sources and that would make it much easier to grasp the information in the article. Something like this:

Yes. I think this is a non-controversial WP:CFORK that is required. (Pakistan isn't the only example relevant here; there are other timelines too.) DTM (talk) 07:00, 21 March 2020 (UTC)
Absolutely, I was about to ask to create separate page for timeline as it's becoming too long. Brown Chocolate (talk)
Titodutta has already suggested something like this above giving the example of Timeline of the 2019–20 coronavirus pandemic in March 2020. DTM (talk) 07:08, 21 March 2020 (UTC). Of course we just need one page; I am not suggesting multiple timelines. DTM (talk) 07:09, 21 March 2020 (UTC)
Agree . I would suggest to go with a separate article like Timeline of the 2020 coronavirus pandemic in the United States. We can always link the section in the main page like in 2020 coronavirus pandemic in the United States. SaiP (talk) 07:20, 21 March 2020 (UTC)

  • oppose he is not some random actor or cricket player. He is the prime of the country of which this pandemic article is about. (I deactivated "agree" templates above) —usernamekiran (talk) 10:37, 22 March 2020 (UTC)
Creating separate sections/sub-sections for domestic and international responses/events makes sense. The choices of headings are also ok. With additional content it will be easier to figure out where these sections and subsections are headed. DTM (talk) 13:15, 22 March 2020 (UTC)
DTM are you agree, Response by PM section should be under Response section?? (Mr.Mani Raj Paul (talk) 13:31, 22 March 2020 (UTC))
Agree No reason to have two response sections. It should be under Response heading as a subheading. Beneath that, have as many h3 as required. Shanze1 (talk) 13:13, 22 March 2020 (UTC)

Two response sections doesn't seem appropriate. TheRichardPinto (talk) 13:53, 22 March 2020 (UTC)

Government Response (under the Response section- Sub Section) (Mr.Mani Raj Paul (talk) 14

@Mr.Mani Raj Paul:: Something like

Government Response (Header)
Communication (Section)
Prime Minsiter Narendra Modi (Sub-section)
Conference with Chief Ministers (Sub-section)
Conferences (Section)
SAARC Conference (Sub-section)
G20 Conference (Sub-section)

I do agree, because we have to show local govt responses to some extent. State govt took several different measures that are worthy of mentions. For that we can think of having a "Government response" subheading. Shanze1 (talk) 16:28, 22 March 2020 (UTC)

New article covering state responses

New article covering state responses - 23 March 2020
The following discussion is an archived debate of New article requested for covering the uncovered local government responses. Please do not modify it.

The result of the discussion was The Article is created Here

  • I suggest creating one like the U.S. features - (here). This can help in covering all uncovered local govt responses. Because, often independent measures have been taken by states that are worthy of coverage. What do you think? Shanze1 (talk) 08:01, 23 March 2020 (UTC)
Agree It is very much essential now. SaiP (talk) 08:17, 23 March 2020 (UTC)
Agree Response section is also being huge now. More decission to come from government. Most of the states are implementing lockdown so better to classify this to new article like said above. Brown Chocolate (talk) 08:51, 23 March 2020 (UTC)
Agree with SaiP and Brown Chocolate. We need pages for states / cities with significant infections. --Jose Mathew (talk) 09:18, 23 March 2020 (UTC)
Comment: We don't need separate pages for each state or cites. I'm only proposing a single page covering local govt. responses and their current situations, so we don't need most of these separate articles. Shanze1 (talk) 09:34, 23 March 2020 (UTC)
In my opinion is Timeline of the 2020 coronavirus pandemic in India should be a summary of the how cases have emerged. We can always detail them in their respective state articles. If not my guess is time line article is going to go humungous. SaiP (talk) 11:07, 23 March 2020 (UTC)
Agree A single article covering all state government responses is needed as it is difficult to mention each of them in main article. - Mayankj429 (talk) 09:38, 23 March 2020 (UTC)
This is a serious epidemic that has already infected 400 people and killed seven. It is almost certain that more people will be infected, and some more people may die. So, even if separate articles are not needed for each state at this point, they will soon be required. --Jose Mathew (talk) 09:45, 23 March 2020 (UTC)
I   concur with Jose Mathew C. We would be needing separate articles pretty soon. We definitely can not detail the cases of all states in one page alone. SaiP (talk) 11:03, 23 March 2020 (UTC)
Shanze1, the name is looks good. (Mr.Mani Raj Paul (talk) 12:01, 23 March 2020 (UTC))
The article is fantastic Shanze1. You could probably change name to Indian state and local government response to the 2020 coronavirus pandemic just like U.S. state and local government response to the 2020 coronavirus pandemic. We should include this in the main article. Don't forget  . SaiP (talk) 12:24, 23 March 2020 (UTC)
Thanks. I'm not very sure about the name. Now I'm more confused with two of you suggesting different names. We can figure that later with more inputs. Yes, once it's in mainspace, I'll link it under a subsection. Shanze1 (talk) 12:30, 23 March 2020 (UTC)

Removal of Helpline Number from Infobox - 23 March 2020
The following discussion is an archived debate of Helpline numbers Please do not modify it.

The result of the discussion was Helpline numbers were not removed but they moved to Here

It just feels out of place in a Wikipedia Article. What are your thoughts? @Shanze1: @SaiP: @DiplomatTesterMan: @Brown Chocolate: @Mayankj429: @Netha Hussain: TheRichardPinto (talk) 09:45, 23 March 2020 (UTC)

In India, a lot of people turn to Wikipedia for instant advice. So while we technically shouldn't keep this, I would support keeping it if that will be useful for readers. --Jose Mathew (talk) 09:52, 23 March 2020 (UTC)
I felt it doesn't hurt to add it since its ongoing and getting lot of hits. I agree, it does feel out of place. If you all agree, you can remove it, it is in the mohfw.gov.in already. Shanze1 (talk) 10:15, 23 March 2020 (UTC)
Agree with Jose Mathew, keeping the helpline number for the mentioned reason. - Sanyam.wikime (talk) 10:32, 23 March 2020 (UTC)
If it does feel out of place we can link the Helpline to the Helpline PDF document on MoHFW website. I mean one click away to the PDF document where all the Helpline numbers lie does not hurt that much. In that way, we server both the purposes. I mean we are not directly giving the numbers on the article. Or we could add a new section under 2020_coronavirus_pandemic_in_India#Response as Helpline and write a sentence and link the document. I am fine with anything. SaiP (talk) 10:51, 23 March 2020 (UTC)
I rejected this thing many times, as per WP:NOTYELLOW. Please do not add any Helpline numbers, Wikipedia is not a place for promotion.(Mr.Mani Raj Paul (talk) 11:06, 23 March 2020 (UTC))
@Mr.Mani Raj Paul: I feel people do understand about WP:NOTYELLOW but as per Jose Mathew C's comment keeping it helps. If we really should not do it, we can go by my method, where we are not mentioning the numbers directly. We could write a section about how Government of India has set up the helpline and link the PDF document directly. We can remove anytime, if we really can not keep it. It will be deleted once this pandemic is over and the Help section remains. SaiP (talk) 11:22, 23 March 2020 (UTC)
SaiP PDF document is good choice, but it's not required ,do you want to work on it ?(Mr.Mani Raj Paul (talk) 11:40, 23 March 2020 (UTC))

Renaming COVID-19 pages from '2020 coronavirus pandemic in India' to '2019-20 coronavirus pandemic in India'

Renaming COVID-19 pages from '2020 coronavirus pandemic in India' to '2019-20 coronavirus pandemic in India' - 24 March 2020
The following discussion is an archived debate of Renaming COVID-19 pages Please do not modify it.

The result of the discussion was the pages will not be renamed due to pandemic stated in India in 2020, not in 2019

I request opinions on renaming this page from '2020 coronavirus pandemic in India' to '2019-20 Coronavirus pandemic in India'. Reasons: 1. Suggested title consistent with other articles under Wikiproject COVID-19, 2. Hard to navigate to under the current title and 3. Existing title technically incorrect since the pandemic began in 2019 and is still active. Also, other India related COVID-19 pages such as 2020 coronavirus pandemic in Maharashtra, 2020 coronavirus pandemic in Uttar Pradesh, etc might need renaming. DishitaBhowmik 15:56, 23 March 2020 (UTC)

Oppose: 2 reasons: (i) It began in 2019 but became a pandemic in 2020 and all world pages have been named accordingly so India cannot have a different title. (ii) We have to keep things consistent, India isn't and cannot be treated as an especial or different case. Any move related to this should be proposed at the global-level, not just India. AnjanBorah (talk) 16:26, 23 March 2020 (UTC)
Disagree Per argument above, ongoing pandemic started in 2020 in India and not 2019. China is the only country where the pandemic started in late 2019. SaiP (talk) 18:27, 23 March 2020 (UTC)

Please do not archive on-going discussions

Per WP:DAOHATTHOD, We are not supposed to archive or hat a thread that has ongoing discussion. We should conclude the discussion based on WP:CON. Please restore them.

Archived ongoing discussions

  • Actually, don't archive anything. I have speeded up the bot to archive 7 day-old threads, and that should be good enough. Cheers, Kautilya3 (talk) 18:11, 26 March 2020 (UTC)
  • @Kautilya3: Does that mean that we have to conclude our discussion before 7 days? SaiP (talk) 19:11, 26 March 2020 (UTC)
No, it means that threads that are inactive for 7 days get archived. (I hope that is what it means. Different bots have been handling differently.) If the bot misbehaves we will fix it somehow. But manual archiving shouldn't be needed except in strange situations. -- Kautilya3 (talk) 19:19, 26 March 2020 (UTC)
@Kautilya3: I am fine with it. In fact, that is more better but there is one thing which we may consider. What about ongoing discussions which have been idle for 7 days? Ideally that should not be the case but what if there are? If the bot skips that, I think we are good there. SaiP (talk)
SaiP, Kautilya3 this discussion (Suggestions for discussion) was the inactive. If the discussion is found not unnecessary for main article, then it will Close or Archive. Suggestions about restructuring and renaming the sections of the article

Request to throw your light here about restructuring and renaming the sections of the articles (Maybe a few of them). Articles that could be taken as reference:'

2020 coronavirus pandemic in the United States
      2020 coronavirus pandemic in Italy
    •   Agree In my opinion, the article may need restructuring and renaming to some extent. SaiP (talk) 07:59, 25 March 2020 (UTC)
    •   Comment: Anybody in for comment? SaiP (talk) 15:34, 25 March 2020 (UTC)
    •   Agree Yes it needs some work but I'm not sure how to do it. Sections are also already pretty long (unneeded content can trimmed). Shanze1 (talk) 03:47, 26 March 2020 (UTC)
    •   Comment: Request all of the volunteers including the editors to throw in their opinions here. I am tagging few of the editors here with whom I was working from start in contributing to the article   Brown Chocolate, Mayankj429, Jose Mathew C, Mr.Mani Raj Paul, Titodutta, & DTM.
    •   Agree I too feel it need some work but same as Shanze1, not sure what. Brown Chocolate (talk) 03:23, 27 March 2020 (UTC)
    • Comment - Ideally, the article should be structured by the progress of the pandemic. For example, one section devoted to the events from the initial discovery till the closing of the borders, another from then till the initiation of lockdown, and a third for the lockdown period. Government response should not be a section of its own, but should be integrated into the narrative. -- Kautilya3 (talk) 08:00, 27 March 2020 (UTC)

    Relief package of FM Sitharaman

The current article affirms that "On 26 March, finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced a package of Rs 1.70 lakh crore to help the poor". I think the article can be improved by adding that "under the scheme, an additional five kilos of rice/wheat will be given to 80 crore individuals -- over the 5 kilo they already get -- along with a one-kilo pulse per household for a period of three months"(sourced by indiatoday.in).

It would provide more a detailed and a more effective information for milions of poor Indian people.Micheledisaveriosp (talk) 11:35, 26 March 2020 (UTC)

    New Idea of Timeline Cases

Anyone can join this discussion, Give your suggestions

My new suggestion , we should do this from Today:- (Example)

    • On 28 March,
Deaths: a 54-year-old man from Madurai in Tamil Nadu, become the ten victim of virus in country.
Positive Cases:Six more cases were reported in Maharashtra - five from Mumbai and one from Thane.
Recoveries: A 21-year-old man who returned from a trip to Dublin and Ireland has been discharged from a Tamil Nadu hospital. (Mr.Mani Raj Paul (talk) 05:45, 28 March 2020 (UTC))
    • Sounds good to me, as long as it is well-sourced (which we are careful about so far). Not sure about the phrase "positive cases", I have seen the term "Active cases" as well. --Titodutta (talk) 05:52, 28 March 2020 (UTC)
    • Agree Recoveries worth a mention as well, but it is difficult to get sources for it. As they are hardly reported. - Mayankj429 (talk) 06:43, 28 March 2020 (UTC)

If we can't be sure that we'll get credible sources for all recoveries, then there is no point mention only a few ignoring the rest. TheRichardPinto (talk) 06:48, 28 March 2020 (UTC)

Yes SaiP , what do you think ? (Mr.Mani Raj Paul (talk) 10:03, 28 March 2020 (UTC))

    Remove line from Discrimination section

Following line can be removed from Discrimination section as it is "personal opinion" and "non-notable incident" (See WP:INDISCRIMINATE). These two reasons were given by Aman Kumar Goel for rejecting my 3 edit requests so same logic should apply here.

Indian Islamic cleric Ilyas Sharafuddin said in an audio address that "Allah unleashed Coronavirus on Chinese for persecuting Uighur Muslims". Ilyas said that "they the Chinese have threatened the Muslims and tried to destroy lives of 20 million Muslims. Muslims were forced to drink alcohol, their mosques were destroyed and their Holy Book was burned. They thought that no one can challenge them, but Allah the most powerful punished them." Hubei was the centre of origin of the virus and has reported 67,000+ confirmed cases. Jasksingh (talk) 14:31, 28 March 2020 (UTC)

    Fatality rates

Here is a little comparison of fatality rate = #deaths/(#deaths + # recoveries). It is a measure of how well (or how poorly) the population and the health care system are coping (figures as of 28 March, 9am UTC). The lower the better.

    • Italy: 45.4%
    • Europe: 34.4%
    • India: 19.4%
    • Australia: 6.1%

    -- Kautilya3 (talk) 09:40, 28 March 2020 (UTC)

Isn't fatality rate calculated as (number of deaths) / (total number of confirmed cases) ? M4DU7 (talk) 19:20, 28 March 2020 (UTC)
Perhaps. But there is no uniform notion of "confirmed case" across all the countries, because the extent of testing varied widely. This figure has a better chance of being meaningful across different countries.
India is being fortunate on some other measures too. The New York Times tabulated and charted a large number of countries that have a serious COVID problem. (Somehow India isn't one of them.) But most countries have a case growth rate that lies somewhere between "doubling every 3 days" and "doubling every 2 days". India's rate is lower than "doubling every 3 days".
    • The growth rate of cases is 16%, as shown on our semi-log chart. That implies doubling every 4.7 days.
    • The growth rate of deaths seems to be 18%. That implies doubling every 4.2 days.
So, the spread of the virus in India is slower than many other countries, as noted by the statistic in the first paragraph of the lead. -- Kautilya3 (talk) 20:21, 28 March 2020 (UTC)

    Suggestions for discussion

I had few suggestions for this article to look better

    • Suggestion 1 move 2nd map (of death count) in infobox to statistics section. Infobox should be bit short. In other countries article, it is in statistics section. So?
    • Suggestion 2 I think we should increase summary for timeline section. It is first section of our article. It should be of 3 para, each para with about 100 words. We should make 2 para now and 3rd could be conclusion of this pandemic.
    • Suggestion 3 If editor agree, collapsed form of New COVID-19 cases in India by state and union territory table could be removed now. Earlier it was first thing seen when you open article, but now it feels good as it is at last and reader could read it. Also we can make it scroll for future increase in dates. Brown Chocolate (talk) 08:31, 24 March 2020 (UTC)
Partially Agree *Suggestion 1 - Deaths are important to show with confirmed cases, would not be a good idea to drop it at last with other stats. *Agree with suggeston 2 and 3. - Mayankj429 (talk) 08:49, 24 March 2020 (UTC)
Agree with 2 and 3. Timeline should still be brief but important events like the lockdown, etc can be included. And for the table, yes that can be done. But I feel the map shouldn't be at the bottom of the article and there is no other place except the infobox for it. Shanze1 (talk) 08:57, 24 March 2020 (UTC)
Agree with suggestion 2 (Mr.Mani Raj Paul (talk) 09:12, 24 March 2020 (UTC))

    • According to me, it should be remove from main article. (Mr.Mani Raj Paul (talk) 06:28, 29 March 2020 (UTC))
    •   Agree Shanze1 (talk) 07:23, 29 March 2020 (UTC)
    • I see no reason to remove it. -- Kautilya3 (talk) 09:59, 29 March 2020 (UTC)

It seems that the Filipino who died in Mumbai after recovering from the virus is not counted as a COVID death by the health ministry [17]. Therefore we should remove it from the list of casualties. M4DU7 (talk) 07:48, 29 March 2020 (UTC)

Legend says "Active cases" for orange bars but "Total cases" is used to draw them in the "COVID-19 cases in India" graph

Take a look at the graph under the heading "COVID-19 cases in India".

Here is the template for this graph: Template:2019–20 coronavirus pandemic data/India medical cases chart.

Here is the link to the template source: Source: Template:2019–20 coronavirus pandemic data/India medical cases chart.

As an example, pick the entry for 2020-03-25. It looks like this:

    {{Medical cases chart/Row|2020-03-25|10|43|606|||606|+87||+17%|factor=3|numwidth=mtmw}}

The first occurrence of 606 here is used to draw the orange bar which is labelled as "Active Cases" in the legend at the top. But if we look at the MoHFW website for this date archived at https://web.archive.org/web/20200325181948/https://www.mohfw.gov.in/, 606 was the total number of cases. It was not the active number of cases. That is, 553 (active) + 42 (cured) + 10 (deaths) + 1 (migrated) = 606. The active number of cases was 553.

I think the bar chart and the legend are inconsistent with each other. Should we fix the case numbers for orange bars so that they are consistent with the legend? A fix for the above example would look like this:

    {{Medical cases chart/Row|2020-03-25|10|43|553|||606|+87||+17%|factor=3|numwidth=mtmw}}

The entire data for this graph needs to be fixed similarly. By the way, I am maintaining an archive of all the official case numbers from MoHFW at https://indiacovid19.github.io/. Every entry on this page is supported by an archived snapshot of the actual source of the data. These archive links can be useful as citations. We can also reuse these numbers to fix this graph.

    -- Susam Pal (talk) 09:45, 29 March 2020 (UTC)

The fourth entry in each row is for total cases. See Template:Medical_cases_chart#Rows. The red/orange color represents the active cases, visibly. -- Kautilya3 (talk) 10:20, 29 March 2020 (UTC)
Thanks for the response. I took a look at Template:Medical_cases_chart#Rows and now I understand that contrary to what I commented earlier, the orange bars in Template:2019–20 coronavirus pandemic data/India medical cases chart indeed display the number of active cases.
In fact, I picked the example I highlighted once again and looked into the HTML code generated to draw the bar for it. Noting down what I learnt for the sake of completeness of this discussion. Here was the template code for it:
    {{Medical cases chart/Row|2020-03-25|10|43|606|||606|+87||+17%|factor=3|numwidth=mtmw}}
Here is the corresponding HTML code generated for this bar:
    <td style="border-left:1px solid silver; border-right:1px solid silver">
    <div title="10" style="background:Black; float:left; overflow:hidden; width:3.3333333333333px"></div>
    <div title="43" style="background:SkyBlue; float:left; overflow:hidden; width:14.333333333333px"></div>
    <div title="553" style="background:Tomato; float:left; overflow:hidden; width:184.33333333333px"></div>
    <div title="0" style="background:Gold; float:left; overflow:hidden; width:0px"></div>
    <div title="0" style="background:OrangeRed; float:left; overflow:hidden; width:0px"></div>
    </td>

Indeed, the active number of cases was automatically calculated to be 533 after subtracting (10 + 43) from 606. I would have noticed this if I had just hovered on the orange bar and the tooltip with this number to show up. By the way, I also learnt that the orange bar is actually made of the HTML color named orange!   --Susam Pal (talk) 11:31, 29 March 2020 (UTC)

    WHO endorsement

Why is this even in the lead. Even Rahul Gandhi has more credibility just now.

The World Health Organisation executive director Michael Ryan said that India had "tremendous capacity" to deal with the coronavirus outbreak and, as the second most populous country, will have enormous impact on the world's ability to deal with it.

    DTM (talk) 15:55, 26 March 2020 (UTC)

I went ahead and removed it. Done. DTM (talk) 16:02, 26 March 2020 (UTC)
If discussion needed please do so. DTM (talk) 16:03, 26 March 2020 (UTC)
Can you explain what the problem is with credibility? -- Kautilya3 (talk) 18:07, 26 March 2020 (UTC)
What does this have anything to do with Rahul Gandhi's credibility? It is a fact that WHO has stated. I do not think it is a problem according to WP:ARTICLE. SaiP (talk) 19:19, 26 March 2020 (UTC)
Linked Michael J. Ryan (doctor). No problems. If the credibility problem has to be explained, then it isn't serious enough. Nevermind. DTM (talk) 14:53, 27 March 2020 (UTC)
    • That quote is taken out of context, and is undue weight at the moment. There isn't a source which discusses India's capacity for dealing with this without also discussing the challenge posed by a large population and a weak public health system. Unless substantive evidence is provided that this does in fact reflect the majority of the sources, I intend to remove this again soon. Vanamonde (Talk) 16:57, 28 March 2020 (UTC)
What context? WHO believes that this is what India needed to do and is supporting it. And the fact that it is supporting is noteworthy. Unless there are other health experts that disagree with the view, I think it needs to stay. -- Kautilya3 (talk) 17:15, 28 March 2020 (UTC)
The context is that every source discussing the pandemic in India discusses the challenges along with the capacity for dealing with the pandemic (if the capacity is mentioned at all). Mentioning one of those in the lead without the other violates our policy on due weight, which I'm not going to both quoting. If you want to add the criticisms of the India response instead, I'm fine with that; but this quote, as currently presented, violates policy. Vanamonde (Talk) 17:29, 28 March 2020 (UTC)
To add criticism of India's response, it has to come from Credible RS to counter WHO. Right? Would it be fine, IF some content is added citing some health experts criticism. Would that balance the due weight as against WHO? Santoshdts (talk) 18:09, 28 March 2020 (UTC)
I think we should add a discussion of the challenges as well. -- Kautilya3 (talk) 18:21, 28 March 2020 (UTC)
(edit conflict) Yes, precisely. If we have a paragraph in the lead covering commentary about India's response/preparedness, then it needs to accurately represent what reliable sources are saying about the topic, including criticism in reliable sources. Even under those circumstances, the Ryan's comment may or may not constitute due weight, because I haven't found very many sources supporting his position; but it's certainly the only way in which it could be acceptable. Vanamonde (Talk) 18:23, 28 March 2020 (UTC)
    • Here is the source, if everyone here means this [3] SaiP (talk) 13:24, 29 March 2020 (UTC)

    Graph on Growth Factor

Earlier I had requested to add graph which shows "Growth Factor", after New Cases per day graph. Increase/Decrease of cases compared to previous day in percentage. This gives an indication of the measures taken and effectiveness. If the epidemic is raising or constant or falling. I do not see that post any more. Manchili1 (talk) 11:51, 29 March 2020 (UTC)

It is probably archived. Growth factors should never be calculated on daily data, because they will be noisy. But, since the cumulative graphs are showing the growth factors already, I don't see what more is needed. The number of cases are doubling every 4.7 days. (In comparison, they are doubling every week in Italy, and every 2 weeks in South Korea.) -- Kautilya3 (talk) 12:05, 29 March 2020 (UTC)
Thank you. My view is, if comparison of new cases of the day with just previous day like one shown here "Growth Factor" [1]. If this Lock-Down is effective then I assume there should be significant increase in cases till April 7th (14 days of Lock-Down) and should see the decline there after in next 14 days(till Apr 21) otherwise even more stringent measures to put in action. In one of the ways, it was also shown in "Spread Trends" Daily view with "Scale uniformly" option off, under this link [2], but I observed numbers here do not match with Wikipedia for a reason may be.Manchili1 (talk) 13:11, 29 March 2020 (UTC)
If there will be an actual decline, we can all celebrate. But before anything like that happens, there will be a tilting of the total cases curve, tending to become more flat. See 2020 coronavirus pandemic in Iran for an example. When the time comes to depict decline, we will need to switch back to a linear chart (as opposed to the current logarithmic chart). -- Kautilya3 (talk) 15:30, 29 March 2020 (UTC)

concerning my username, it is the first time. It was a very short quotation which is just a sentence. I don't think I need to be blocked fromWikipedia for such a little error. Probably, I've forgotten merely to put a couple of "" signs but I indicated the associated sourceI think it was relevant for the WP article and I was the first editor to have mentioned it. Actually, there exists a specific subsection titled "PM CARES Fund" and I think it is better than previously. Have a good day.Micheledisaveriosp (talk) 12:04, 30 March 2020 (UTC)

    PM-CARES fund

According to India Today, the "Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday announced the Prime Minister’s Citizen Assistance and Relief in Emergency Situations Fund (PM-CARES) for donations to "India's war against Covid-19" or the novel coronavirus... The PM-CARES Fund accepts micro-donations too. It will strengthen disaster management capacities and encourage research on protecting citizens."

It isn't yet referenced in the WP article. e.g. in the section titled "Immediate Relief". I think this information would be relevant to improve the WP article. Thanks for your precious work.Micheledisaveriosp (talk) 17:34, 28 March 2020 (UTC)

This statement completes what is previously said in the current WP article: "Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution has been asked to ensure availability of essentials." The Government has appealed to voluntary contributions. Meanwhile the lockdown has triggered massive migrations of thousand of workers directed from metropolis to their respective homes (sourced here). Locals as well as charity organized groups are proving foods among needy people (here). This kind of exodus isn't yet mentioned and it would be part of the healthcare national policy of the Government.Micheledisaveriosp (talk) 08:53, 29 March 2020 (UTC)

    Tablighi Jamaat inclusion

Where do we include this?[1] I think it is a significant subject that should be in a section somewhere here. What do you all think? Shanze1 (talk) 12:51, 31 March 2020 (UTC)

@Shanze1: I think it should be added under Timeline section in this article, cases related to this meeting have also been reported in other states/UTs like Tamil Nadu, telengana and the first death in Karnataka.[18], 9 out of 10 cases in Andaman are releated to it.[19] and in coming days more cases can explode. - Mayankj429 (talk) 13:32, 31 March 2020 (UTC)
@Mayankj429: Thanks. I also think this should get a mention (at least) in the main article since it has ties with so many other cases like you described. Can work on that in days to come with more reports. Right now some are very vague. Shanze1 (talk) 13:43, 31 March 2020 (UTC)
It should be in Timeline. It's so important to be mention in this main article. I don't see any other section in which this could be mention other than timeline. Also we all agreed to expand timeline section so this could be one of the best thing to mention. Brown Chocolate (talk) 13:42, 31 March 2020 (UTC)
Yes. This should get a mention there too. Shanze1 (talk) 13:45, 31 March 2020 (UTC)
I have added following text in timeline.
281 foreigners are among 1830 persons found by Delhi Police during last two days in Delhi's Nizamuddin Markaz Mosque. Among these foreign are citizens of Britain and France. About 200 people have seen symptoms of corona. Although only 24 people have been confirmed so far. (Mr.Mani Raj Paul (talk) 14:53, 31 March 2020 (UTC))

Additional info on 2 deaths that happened in Bhavanagar, Gujarat

    • 26 March - "He travelled to Delhi recently. He was admitted to hospital on March 24 and died this morning. His test report was positive for coronavirus. He was also suffering from a heart disease, diabetes and hypertension." - Principal Secretary (Health), Jayanti Ravi.[1] This record is already added, just need to add more information about it.
    • 29 March - "A 45-year-old woman died at a hospital in Bhavnagar in Gujarat late Sunday night, taking the total number of fatalities in the state to six" - Principal Secretary (Health), Jayanti Ravi. She faced mental issues and had suffered stroke around two weeks ago. [2] This is not recorded under Statistics section, it needs to be added along with additional info

Also, there are only 5 count of deaths in Gujarat, while actually there are 6. (3 Ahmedabad, 2 Bhavnagar and 1 Surat) [3]. There is some issue in the state allocated to the deaths in this article, as total is correct at 35 of all states.

    Donations

Literally hundreds of celebrities and companies have donated money to fight the pandemic. I don't see any use in mentioning some of them randomly (like Ajinkya Rahane's 10 lakh and Atul Wassan's 5 lakh). In my opinion only donations ≥ 100 crore by companies and ≥ 25 crore by individuals should be mentioned in the article. M4DU7 (talk) 22:41, 31 March 2020 (UTC)

Agreed, surely many others have also contributed to the fund, if we begin including everyone who has contributed, we would need to create a new page. And I do not see the relevance to the article. Just because news articles are available, that doesn't mean that every bit of news has to be shoved down our throats. But the sources 289 and 290 which are claimed to contain the information, "Ratan Tata, Mukesh Ambani, Akshay Kumar, Suresh Raina, Varun Dhawan, BCCI, Indian Railways, Central Board of Secondary Education", do not have the information. A CE and a change in § Situation

Firstly, a CE: does the name of the village of 'Korauna' in § Situation → Misinformation and discrimination need to be italicised? It's a proper noun... irrespective of the language it's from — as names — I don't think they are typically italicised in the English wiki (see MOS:BADITALICS). Maybe sumn like "residents of the village of Korauna in Sitapur..." fits?

Secondly, having gone through that subheading 'Misinformation and discrimination', I was wondering why they couldn't be two separate subsections? You can categorise the fear against meat-eating, Ilyas Sharafuddin's claims, and the cow urine claims as misinformation, while the others are cases of discrimination occuring. Maybe there is some ambiguity with what Sharafuddin said, but he didn't act on or call for anything which doesn't constitute as discrimination, at least in my books. If you agree with me that there isn't much in common between the cases of misinformation and the cases of discrimination, perhaps they can be separate subheadings?
