It is certainly of interest that an Archibald Mansfield Campbell matriculated at Trinity College, Oxford in 1842, and that he was then aged 19; also his father Archibald was of Madras.[1] He graduated S.C.L. in 1849.[2] It would be particularly helpful to connect (either of those) Campbell(s) with the architect and businessman Archibald Mansfield Campbell who was based in Weybridge, and was a cousin of Charles Blachford Mansfield. Archibald Mansfield Campbell was in business in Southampton with George Guillaume (partnership dissolved 1858) in a firm of architects and surveyors. The cricket match in the article was played in Southampton. Seems to be right. Archie Campbell the cousin of CB Mansfield was in Italy in 1850; he met Lowes Cato Dickinson there and introduced him to the Christian Socialist circle around F. D. Maurice. Some light on this: the Archibald Mansfield Campbell who died in Govan in January 1887 was son of Lieut.-Col. Archibald Campbell of the 46th Foot.[4] The 46th Foot appear to have been in Madras from 1817 to 1833. So that seems firm enough as a connection. Charles Matthews (talk) 20:59, 9 January 2022 (UTC)
Sheffield Independent - Saturday 19 July 1851: "MANSFIELD-SIBBES On the 8th inst., Warwick, Archibald Mansfield, late of Trinity College, Oxford, eldest son of the late Col. Archibald Campbell, 46th Regiment, to Fanny, 4th daughter of the late Francis Sibbes, Esq., of Harewood, Yorkshire." But here it is Gibbes, not Sibbes which doesn't check out. In 1817 [5] Archibald Campbell of the 46th married Anne, second daughter of Robert Pope Blachford of Osborn, Isle of Wight. And she had a brother Barrington Pope Blachford who was an MP and FRS. And aunt of Charles Blachford Mansfield.Charles Matthews (talk) 21:20, 9 January 2022 (UTC)
