Table of Fish, Insects, Fossils, Art edit

I was thinking of adding a table here of all of the animals represented in Animal Crossing:New Horizons and linking to the real fish, insect, fossil, art etc. article page on Wikipedia. Does this sound like an appropriate thing to do on this page? Iamjessklein (talk) 16:47, 1 May 2020 (UTC)Reply

No, it's not appropriate for a video game article on Wikipedia. See WP:VGSCOPE. This is the kind of detail that belongs on Wikia/Fandom. -- ferret (talk) 17:01, 1 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
Please don’t spend on such a project. It would be removed per WP:GAMECRUFT. As ferret says, you’d want to go create a list like this on a fan wikia or Gamefaqs (though they may already have them there) not here. Sergecross73 msg me 17:57, 1 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
Okay, thanks, I'm glad that I asked! Iamjessklein (talk) 18:44, 1 May 2020 (UTC)Reply

Seems ok to do :D Angeleyes444 (talk) 10:18, 9 August 2020 (UTC)Reply

But no it can’t be allowed Angeleyes444 (talk) 10:19, 9 August 2020 (UTC)Reply

I think there is, in fact, a list of this on the independent Animal Crossing Wiki, linked here. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Squid45 (talkcontribs) 19:32, 18 December 2020 (UTC)Reply

Typo edit

Since I'm too lazy to do so, can someone (specifically, a Wikipedia editor) mention about this fixed, in-game typo somewhere in the article? --209.52.88.48 (talk) 23:38, 16 May 2020 (UTC)Reply

A random in-game error isn't terribly worthy of mention on Wikipedia, and we don't typically source YouTube videos. L ke (talk) 23:51, 16 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, unless major video game websites are pointing it out, it’s probably not worth noting. Sergecross73 msg me 01:01, 17 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
The Super Mario 64 article doesn't mention the "It that really you?" typo (which is far more well known), so there isn't much of a reason why this game should mention a typo. MightyArms (talk) 14:48, 25 May 2020 (UTC)Reply

Updates edit

I feel like rolling revisions to include every free update this game receives isn't necessarily helpful, and is eventually going to bloat this article to the point of unusability. Is there a better way to integrate this information? Morgan695 (talk) 17:09, 28 July 2020 (UTC)Reply

We have four options here. Either we put the updates on a separate page similar to the Development of Overwatch, keep adding to it till the updates are over and then sum up the updates over time, do something similar to Minecraft where we just mention the most recent update at the time, or just add the updates that significantly shake up the game. Captain Galaxy (talk) 13:27, 30 July 2020 (UTC)Reply
I don't think this is bad enough yet to worry about. If you want to see an ugly example, look at Sims 4 which has a massive table of free updates. I've been pondering deleting it, at least where secondary sources didn't take note. In contrast, this page basically has a paragraph currently and I think it's fine for the moment. We can always revisit. -- ferret (talk) 13:30, 30 July 2020 (UTC)Reply
Well, the updates so far have been few enough and impactful enough that they could probably be included. That being said, its own article might work, but I wouldn't start it for a while. There's not very much yet. Squid45 (talk) 19:29, 18 December 2020 (UTC)Reply

How to download this game edit

How to download this game Affankundi (talk) 08:36, 23 November 2020 (UTC)Reply

Add images edit

I noticed that Aya Kyogoku and Koji Takahashi were mentioned in this article. Is it reasonable to add portrait photos of them to this article? Since I didn't find photos of them from the Wikimedia commons, does anyone know where to find copyright free images of them? Thank you! -- Seyoola (talk) 08:02, 13 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

Creativity edit

Where will be a good place to mention that New Horizons inspires players' creativity via custom designs, such as home decoration, clothing, and island transformation? Thanks! -- Seyoola (talk) 00:40, 28 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

Probably the "Impact" section, but only if you've got reliable sources taking note of it, of course. Sergecross73 msg me 13:13, 28 March 2021 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for your feedback! I got a couple of reliable reference to support the idea. I probably will wait a little bit to see if Wikipedia editors are interested in adding something about custom designs to this article. Anyway, I found that the custom design feature plays an important role in the success of New Horizons! -- Seyoola (talk) 14:51, 28 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

Short description expand? edit

Should the short description be expanded beyond "2020 video game"? I think adding a descriptor of the type of video game can be helpful too, because I dunno whether it's a simulation game or whether it's some other type of game. Qwertyxp2000 (talk | contribs) 01:47, 3 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

I actually just started a discussion at WT:VG because I'm never quite sure how much is too much or not enough myself either. Sergecross73 msg me 15:58, 3 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

Terraforming edit

I have had to revert edits by a user who removed reference to this word. They were correct in stating that the definition of the word, terraform, does not match how the community/industry use this word. I have tried my best to rectify this, however does anyone have ideas on how to address this in the article?

Cheers, AussieWikiDan (talk) 18:11, 23 May 2021 (UTC)Reply

I'm the user who made the edits you reverted. Nintendo themselves have never used the term to describe landscaping in game. They always use "Island Designer App," or the names of the various tools within it. Perhaps we should refer to it as "landscaping" or other phrase while noting that it's popularly known in the community by the misnomer, "terraforming." 2601:5C7:C100:5AB0:6151:FE9:2899:1304 (talk) 22:44, 23 May 2021 (UTC)Reply
I took a shot at further clarification. Mainly I think we needed a citation to support the non-standard use of the word. Lowercaserho (talk) 00:22, 24 May 2021 (UTC)Reply
A simple Google search shows terraforming is pretty frequently used. It may not be the classic use of the word, but it conveys what you're doing better than landscaping because you're literally reshaping the land and water structures. Sergecross73 msg me 00:59, 24 May 2021 (UTC)Reply
"Terraforming" has a very specific definition. It does not "convey what you're doing better than landscaping" because it doesn't fit the literal definition of what you're doing and landscaping very much does (one of the tools in the Island Designer App is already called the "waterscaping permit"). There's a reason Nintendo has never used the phrase "terraforming" themselves. This should be a resource with accurate information and definitions. The term "terraforming" should be addressed because it's so common, but it should be done so in a factual way so people know that the term is used improperly. I don't believe bandwagon fallacies are a legitimate argument for keeping inaccurate language in place. Archrid (talk) 03:42, 24 May 2021 (UTC)Reply
We need to find a solution that is backed by what reliable sources commonly say about the game. Feel free to do some digging, but I dont think landscaping is commonly used in this games context, while, as my link above demonstrated, terraforming is. Maybe there's a third route - a way to dance around using a term at all, and just describe the what can be done (altering land, lakes, rivers, etc.) Sergecross73 msg me 14:20, 24 May 2021 (UTC)Reply
I think that's fair. I think a good way to proceed would be to address the functions of the Island Designer App in the way Nintendo does (as I said, they don't use "terraforming"), which is usually referring either to the app wholesale or its specific components (cliff construction permit, waterscaping permit, etc.). I think they're the the most reliable source when it comes to terminology. And as I said, I do think the term "terraforming" should be addressed in the article as being popular slang among the community despite its inaccuracy in describing the process. Archrid (talk) 16:56, 25 May 2021 (UTC)Reply
I was playing today and found that Nintendo does in fact use the word "landscaping" in game in reference to the decoration of one's island. If you move a building (an islander's home, for instance), and the game is forced to remove a piece of placed furniture, you'll be met with the message "We'll have to do a little landscaping, but we can make this work. Should we go ahead?[1]" This, combined with the lack of any use of the word "terraforming" means that we're in a situation where the only official source's terminology is at odds with this article, and this should be rectified. Game title edit

Hi there! Could you please explain the meaning of the word Crossing in the title of the game. Does it mean intersection, crossroads or hybridization, crossbreeding? I need this information for Russian wikipedia. Thanks in advance.--178.65.130.172 (talk) 11:57, 27 August 2021 (UTC)Reply

I'm not sure it's ever explicitly stated, but my understanding was that it's in reference to "crossing paths" with all the characters you interact with in the game (who are all all animals.) Sergecross73 msg me 12:40, 27 August 2021 (UTC)Reply
I'd agree with Sergecross73. It'd lean towards "Crossroads", rather than "Crossbreeding". But it's not "Crossroads" in the sense of a literal crossroads, but more the idea of "crossing paths" -- ferret (talk) 14:36, 27 August 2021 (UTC)Reply
It's probably not particularly crucial either way - the game still goes by a title that translates to "Animal Forest" in Japan. Considering it's Japanese created/developed, and they don't even use the "Crossing" part of the name, it's probably not all that important. Sergecross73 msg me 17:18, 27 August 2021 (UTC)Reply

Review edit

I've had a look through the article. Here's what stood out.

  • General/lead
Given that the co-op gameplay image shows the cylindrical world design, do we really need two near-identical images? We can just merge appropriate parts of the captions into the main gameplay image. Or so it seems to me.
Done I'm a sucker for images, but I do agree the gameplay image also represents what the second image is trying to convey. Removed.
In the lead, I don't think we need those notes about what place the game is in terms of sales numbers, since you link to lists that readers can check. Also, it being the fifteenth best-selling title in history, is there a source for that?
Done That's fair, those notes seemed a little crufty to me anyways.
  • Gameplay
Almost the entire third paragraph seems to use only two citations. Do those citations have all that information?
Done. From what I remember, a couple months ago when I first began working on this article, I saw that the gameplay section was very crufty. I rewrote, with intentions of "adding references later", only to go on a hiatus and return thinking this was already cited. It also seems like someone made large edits that elaborated on animal collecting to a beyond-needed degree, so I did some copyediting as well.
  • Development
The image includes Katsuya Eguchi... I can't find any mention of him in the infobox, or anywhere in the article. Why is he here? What role did he fill for this game in particular? What did he contribute?
Done The source in the image caption cites him as one of the games' directors. I went ahead and added his name to the infobox and some more info in development.
I don't think that quote box is necessary.
Done, and oh my god this is too funny to ignore. I use PMTOK as my example article, and often I will borrow coding from it (such as templates) because I'm too lazy to write it out again. Apparently I never replaced the Paper Mario reference when I used the quotebox from that article. I can't believe that went so long unnoticed!
  • Reception
On the whole I'm scpetical of how the reception section's been formatted and how the sources are distributed. There's little commentary on different elements from individual critics, an inconsistency of saying who said what for each website, there's a lack of general cited consensus, and a feeling like we're having to take some of the statemetns there on trust. I'll only include a couple of examples, but they should help illustrate.
Example: "Critics praised the ability to place furniture virtually anywhere, and most agreed it was a necessary change of pace in the series." This sentence is entirely uncited, not even a few citations showing these different opinions. The citations only begin with more specific elements after this point. It's the kind of structure I'd expect to see on a Wikia.
"Critics from GameSpot and Game Informer praised the creative freedom and control offered by the game,[62]" - You only use one ref, and the following part of the sentence doesn't use either.
Working I definitely agree that (looking back now) I didn't give this section the justice it deserved. Back when I was actively working on the article a user made some good faith, yet poor, edits to this section. I jumped the gun too quickly and reverted it and suspected it of vandalism without question, while it was just a case of a non-native speaker. Ferret disciplined me about it, and still not knowing what I did wrong somehow, fought him over it a bit. Whoops! I took a break from this article after that. Give me some time to rewrite this and I'll have it looking nicer.
  Done.
The Sales bits are rather disjointed being broken up like that.
Done Organized into debut sales and total sales paragraphs.
The entire Award text paragraph is uncited. Do we really need it, since there's a table?
Working Per WP:VG/AWARDS, some prose to discuss notable awards is good; for the references, I guess past me thought that the content below was already cited, so it didn't need it? I'm now thinking that theory isn't the best, so I'll go back and add refs to it.
  Done.
References
Is Nookfriends reliable? I don't know the website.
Done, if I knew this was here it would have been long gone.
Refs 51 and 63 are the same source.
Done? I moved sources around and now I can't find which one this was referring to. I may have ultimately gotten rid of it during this, though.
4Players, Destructoid VideoGamer aren't used at all aside from the score. Can it?
  Working
Done, included 4Players. I removed Destructoid and VideoGamer due to prior problems I've had with their quality on other reviews.

@Panini!: That's what stood out. There might be more later. I'll put this article on hold so edits can be made. --ProtoDrake (talk) 16:34, 19 October 2021 (UTC)Reply

ProtoDrake, thanks for the review! I'll admit some of the stuff here stood out even to me as well. The article undergoes a lot of editor attention and is changed often, and some stuff from lesser experienced editors seemed to have slipped under my radar, such as some of the stuff you pointed out here. Example: Nookfriends? *throws nearby object* Who put that in there?! Currently, I'm doing a quick overhaul of my very first article contributions, so I will return to this tomorrow and hopefully fulfill everything by then. Panini!🥪 17:07, 19 October 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Panini!: Just a ping. Nothing's really been happening for some time. Are you still able to do the edits? --ProtoDrake (talk) 09:28, 2 November 2021 (UTC)Reply

Yeah, thanks for checking in with me. I've been busy recently with a lot of writing outside Wikipedia, and any time I had available I, ironically, played New Horizons instead of here due to the writing burnout I was having. The work has died down, though, so I'll work on finishing this today. All that's left is Reception, really. Panini!🥪 11:30, 2 November 2021 (UTC)Reply
ProtoDrake, while I'm wrapping up the Reception section, you commented on there may be more later. Do you spot anything else? I'll also ping you when I finish completely. Panini!🥪 13:59, 8 November 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Panini!: My one final issue would be the image in the "Art and graphics", which includes a Famitsu logo in the image. Is there a clean alternative? Not an absolute killer, but I'd rather have a clean image there. --ProtoDrake (talk) 15:04, 8 November 2021 (UTC)Reply
ProtoDrake, ah, good eye! I wanted to find a better image in general that's higher quality but this is the only real one I could find. I'm already annoyed by its quality, but I could crop it out if you'd like. Unless if you can find one out there yourself you think would be better that I also missed? Panini!🥪 15:16, 8 November 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Panini!: I looked, and couldn't find anything without the Famitsu mark. If you want to keep it, I'd suggest cropping it and saying so in the image file's summary. --ProtoDrake (talk) 20:20, 8 November 2021 (UTC)Reply
ProtoDrake,   Done. Panini!🥪 21:29, 8 November 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Panini!: I don't see anything major. Probably needs some different kinds of work if you want to take it further, but this one I'll be happy to promote to GA. --ProtoDrake (talk) 21:32, 9 November 2021 (UTC)Reply
