HistoryEdit

After an unpublished[2] mockup in 1963, the Cal has become an annual publication since 1964.[1]

The Cal has been created by the British art director Derek Forsyth[1][3][4] and is known for its limited availability, as it is only given as a corporate gift to a restricted number of Pirelli customers and celebrities.[5]

Publication was discontinued after the 1974 issue[n 1] as an economizing cutback in response to the world recession from the oil shock. It was resurrected 10 years later and has been published regularly since then.[7][8]

According to Marco Tronchetti Provera,[9] the purpose of the Cal is "to mark the passing of time".[10]

The annual cost is about "$2 million".[11] 20,000 copies of the Cal are published every year.[12]

About the diversity,[13] the Cal features mainly women of miscellaneous ages and progressively men, coming from different countries, classy half-naked and more (the Cal 2010 by Terry Richardson[14]) or fully clothed (the Cal 2008 by Patrick Demarchelier in Shanghai[15] after the joint venture of 2005 in the Shandong province[16]). The Cal had several 'All Black' issues. Terrence Donovan created a groundbreaking (especially for that time) calendar featuring only black models in 1987. The shot included a 16-year-old Naomi Campbell at the beginning of her career.[17] The second issue featuring only black models was released in 2018 and was shot by Tim Walker.[18]

ModelsEdit

Appearance in the calendar has become a mark of distinction for those photographic models who are chosen, as well as for the photographers commissioned to produce the images used. Over the years, the models and celebrities who have appeared in it include Alessandra Ambrosio,[19] Bianca Balti, Ana Beatriz Barros,[19] Malgosia Bela, Elsa Benítez,[19] Mariacarla Boscono (3), Lauren Bush, Gisele Bündchen, Naomi Campbell (4), Gracie Carvalho,[19] Helena Christensen, Cindy Crawford, Emanuela de Paula,[19] Waris Dirie, Yamila Díaz, Lily Donaldson, Isabeli Fontana (8), Magdalena Frackowiak, Saskia de Brauw, Sonny Freeman Drane, Gigi Hadid, Bridget Hall, Filippa Hamilton, Miranda Kerr,[19] Karlie Kloss, Heidi Klum, Karolína Kurková (3), Noémie Lenoir, Adriana Lima[19] (3), Daisy Lowe, Angela Lindvall, Lakshmi Menon, Kate Moss (3), Petra Nemcová, Sasha Pivovarova, Natasha Poly, Frankie Rayder, Coco Rocha, RuPaul, Anja Rubik, Joan Smalls, Lara Stone (3), Fernanda Tavares, Caroline Trentini, Christy Turlington, Guinevere Van Seenus, Edita Vilkeviciute, Natalia Vodianova (5), Alek Wek (3), Daria Werbowy and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley.[19]

PhotographersEdit

Peter Lindbergh[n 2] produced three editions of the calendar and Annie Leibovitz[n 3] two.[24]

For Patrick Demarchelier,[n 4] the Cal is "the most prestigious calendar in the world".[25]

In the trend of Me Too movement and Weinstein effect, the Cal 2019 by Albert Watson[n 5] features Laetitia Casta in lingerie without teasing nudity.[10]
