Question: What is a "superhit" and who gets to make that judgment?

Greetings, WikiProject Bangladesh! I've been cleaning up a number of Bangladeshi film articles in recent days and I keep coming across claims that certain movies were "superhits". At first I thought this was just a subjective opinion on the part of an editor, but I've also been encountering the phrase, "it was declared a superhit." In fact, if you look at the page for Apu Biswas, her filmography includes classifications of the "hit" status of her movies: average hit, hit, superhit, etc.

My question is: is this just a subjective piece of Bangladeshi (or more broadly, Bengali) film terminology, or is there some trade organization in Bangladesh that actually certifies these movies as hits, superhits, etc? I ask this because I want to know if claims that a movie was a "superhit" are subjective opinions (which I would think should be deleted from the articles where they appear) or if this is a more objective statement. Thank you to anyone who can clear this up for me. Tigercompanion25 (talk) 22:24, 16 October 2015 (UTC)

Edits by SheriffIsInTown

User:SheriffIsInTown is going around Bangladesh-related articles and removing anything he considers "anti-Pakistan". This includes replacing the accepted facts of the 1971 Bangladesh genocide. I'm currently too preoccupied with real life issues to monitor his every move, but someone has to take note of his extensive POV-pushing.--Akbar the Great (talk) 09:04, 6 January 2016 (UTC)

Instead of keep on removing this comment, it will be better to focus on real problem. As per whatever little experience I had with Sheriff, I don't think that Akbar is wrong here. But he should raise this issue at WP:AE, that will be better. Sheriff has been already notified for sanctions regarding articles he edits. He should edit carefully. --Human3015TALK  19:13, 7 January 2016 (UTC)
Like how, carefully? I did not expect such a blanket statement from such an experienced Wikipedian. How about you identify the edits which i did not do carefully? Sheriff | ☎ 911 | 19:19, 7 January 2016 (UTC)
This is really not blanket, I already told you few things on your talk page in past. I don't want to repeat it. Still just to repeat one thing, your edit summary like Gandu on featured article is still unjustifiable in any case. Thats why I said to be careful while editing. There is not much wrong if you have pro-Pakistani POV, there are many highly experienced users who have Pro-Pakistani or Pro-Indian POV. Leave about that abusive edit summary but your overall behaviour is such that you don't want anything should be written against Pakistan. This will not happen. If anyone want that anything should not be written against India or Bangladesh still that will also not happen. You should be little flexible and should be brave enough to accept some facts. If Akbar posted about you to get attention of some users then its ok. --Human3015TALK  20:01, 7 January 2016 (UTC)
You already addressed that summary line with me at my talk page and i explained why i did that so i am not sure why you are highlighting that again. Wikipedia is a learning process and i was still learning at that time and am still learning now. Your assessment about my overall behavior is wrong that i don't want anything written against Pakistan. I have provided policy based reasons for my edits most of the time and my issue with Akbar the Great was based on policy reasons. You are welcome to write anything you want against Pakistan but if it does not fall on Wikipedia's policies then that will not happen as well. My main objection about edits of Akbar the Great was that what he was putting in those articles, it was not according to the source he was providing and those edits happen to be anti-Pakistan because his main area of work is promoting Bangladesh and maligning Pakistan so off course if i would object to any part of his edit, i will show up as Pro-Pakistan. There is also ownership issue with this user. It seems like he thinks he owns all Bangladesh related articles and a Pakistani should not work on those articles. I have had lengthy discussions with him at my Talk page and anytime i have had any discussion with him, the result was more aggravation. You are not completely aware of all the circumstances. This is not just one occurrence of him accusing me of "POV-pushing", he has done that before at several occasions. Not just facts, I am brave enough to accept whatever is properly sourced whether its a fact or not. Answer to your last point, i don't have problem with him posting about me to get attention of some users, my problem is the way he posted and the way he framed me as a POV-pusher and has been doing previously as well, also check out User talk:SheriffIsInTown#Restoration of personal attack to see a couple of those past occasions. Template:RPA is for these types of messages which has personal attacks in them and i applied it because i considered it a personal attack. Sheriff | ☎ 911 | 21:14, 7 January 2016 (UTC)

Category/ies being gutted?

I wonder if there is a technical solution to this problem. A page was recently removed from a category that I believe has real-world importance as a resource, and I've started a discussion at Talk:Centre_for_Law_and_Mediation_(Bangladesh)#NGO, not built by political parties. Now I wonder how to find out what other pages might have been removed from that category. Does anyone know of tools that could help? I believe that if a category is added to one's watch list, the only changes that appear are actual edits to the category encoding, that pages added to the category or removed will not be listed. Perhaps, of course, the real problem is that wikipedia categories are too flaky to be relied on in the real world, and we need to set up List of NGOs in Bangladesh instead. Sminthopsis84 (talk) 14:14, 23 February 2016 (UTC)

@Sminthopsis84: You may find https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T3710 illuminating. My reading of it is that for ten years people have wanted a way to watch for removals from categories. It seems to be regarded as technically difficult, but not impossible, so someday we may see a technical solution. Until then you may want a list. Worldbruce (talk) 15:47, 23 February 2016 (UTC)
Thank you very much @Worldbruce:! For those skilled in mediawiki matters there is also Mediawiki CategoryWatch, but apparently it is not technically supported. The problem here is, of course, that a knowledgeable person is needed to set the list up, without having the category entries available to work from. Perhaps there are many other categories that need to be converted to lists as soon as possible! Sminthopsis84 (talk) 16:37, 23 February 2016 (UTC)

So I've made a small start on List of non-governmental organizations in Bangladesh with much more to come as I have time. Perhaps it can co-exist with the category: the category provides some interlinking between the various pages, and the list provides a way to monitor these matters. It turns out that it is automatically linked from Template:Asia_topic, called from the lists that exist for other countries. Ideas about how it can be better integrated into this project would be welcome. Also, if an administrator sees this, could the page be pre-emptively partial protected? Judging by the number of talk pages of anons that link to the lists for other countries, this will be prone to spurious changes from IPs. Sminthopsis84 (talk) 13:53, 25 February 2016 (UTC)

Pakistani POV pushers

The above users belongs to a club of Pakistani POV pushers, who wants to show that Pakistan Army were the good guys and Mukti Bahini were the bad guys. They are working together to promote preposterous theories sourced from Pakistani websites and Pakistani writers. Pakistan Army came to rescue the Bihari women from being raped by Mukti Bahini, Indian Army and Mukti Bahini were involved in mass rapes.

Mass removal of content, large scale POV pushing to make Wikipedia look like a Pakistani encyclopaedia. They are spreading their propaganda all over Bangladesh related articles, Rape during the Bangladesh Liberation War, 1971 Bangladesh genocide, Bangladesh Liberation War, Mukti Bahini. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 121.100.143.211 (talk) 04:54, 20 April 2016 (UTC)

Yes, there is clearly a problem. The solution, though, is not edit-warring, but to carefully document the bad behaviour and to propose topic bans for those editors. It is necessary to keep in mind that administrators are not content editors, so when proposing a topic ban (which will be evaluated by administrators) the evidence must be about bad behaviour, not about content. Also keep in mind that the history of those pages is still available, so vandalism can be reverted. P.S.: that particular example of mass removal of content was not completely wrong, some of the content was not very good, though the person went too far in claiming that some parts were "irrelevant" and in saying that some parts were unsourced when the sources were there as external links. I've added different content now. Sminthopsis84 (talk) 13:05, 20 April 2016 (UTC)
@Sminthopsis84: External links are not considered as sources automatically, you need to apply them to the content they support. You cannot just leave them anywhere in the article and claim that whole article was supported by them. You did a good job adding them properly now. Until the content is supported by sources, i don't have any problem with that. Irrelevant content was irrelevant to the article. This is the article about the town. Any content you add in that article should be in relation to the town. There is also a separate article on Provisional Government of Bangladesh which can cover the content which is not directly related to Mujibnagar but is related to PGB. Sheriff | ☎ 911 | 13:18, 20 April 2016 (UTC)
Yes, some of your points were appropriate. However, if you care about the content of wikipedia then you need to try to work with people rather than against them. Deletionism is not conducive to a pleasant working environment (and advertising yourself as a tough enforcer doesn't pre-dispose people to want to work with you, either). Banglapedia

Two points that I want to alert contributors to the project about have to do with Banglapedia:

  1. A person is claiming that Banglapedia is not a reliable source (I won't point to edit diffs, so as not to embarrass them). Of course, that is ridiculous; Banglapedia is a scholarly work created by the Bangla Academy. Perhaps that mistake has come about because the publisher is now using MediaWiki software to maintain the online system, as can be seen at the bottom of the Welcome page. If destructive edits based on that misunderstanding are happening to wikipedia on a large scale, then we may need systematic tools to find and revert them all.
  2. Banglapedia's main page now has a copyright notice. I believe that is a recent change (reinstating the notice that was there in the past). I, at least, have not been combatting copyright violations from Banglapedia vigorously because there was no copyright notice (that I could find). I have the impression that there may be quite a bit of work to do here to remove that type of material. Sminthopsis84 (talk) 19:56, 23 April 2016 (UTC)

List of Bangladeshi scientists

If you don't care to include a dozen names, why to preserve the list?Xx236 (talk) 10:33, 10 May 2016 (UTC)

The list needs work. At present there is also a category:Bangladeshi scientists but the edit history does not keep a record of what entries have been in the category in the past, so it is important to replace categories with lists in order to guard against vandalism and ill-considered editing. More editors interested in Bangladeshi topics are needed to do the work of building the list pages. Sminthopsis84 (talk) 20:30, 10 May 2016 (UTC)

This talk page showing up in google searches

Do we want to have this discussion indexed so that it shows up in google searches, as it does now? I was just advised at Wikipedia:Village_pump_(technical) that this can probably be turned off if we wish, see Wikipedia:Controlling search engine indexing. For example, a search just now for "What is a "superhit" and who gets to make that judgment?" turned up a link to this page, as well as a broken link to a site that appears to have scraped the contents of this page. Instructions for new wikipedians like me on how to find articles to edit

Hi,I recently joined wikipedia and would like to know how to get started to editing articles in details and where to find the articles to edit.I believe this is a problem for many newcomers like me,specially from Bangladesh.A thread should be started on how to get started on wikipedia for people in Bangladesh. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Raiyan24r (talkcontribs) 15:09, 1 September 2016 (UTC)

If you have a camera, one fairly easy way to get started would be to look at Category:Wikipedia requested photographs in Bangladesh and see if there are any you can add -- for example if you are located near something that needs photographing -- from the over 200 requests linked from that page.
An introduction to editing here might be rather misplaced. But, there are links to tutorials on your talk page which is at User talk:Raiyan24r, or you could have a look at WP:ADVENTURE which promises "Learn to edit Wikipedia in under an hour!"
If you are looking for articles to improve, the table on the right of our project page Wikipedia:WikiProject Bangladesh, "Bangladesh articles by quality and importance" can be used to look for articles. For example you could look at the High Importance articles that are still C class or Start class and see if you can improve them.
If you are looking for articles to create, you could look at Wikipedia:WikiProject Bangladesh/Article requests, but be aware that at least some of them might not meet WP:GNG so they would likely be deleted if created.
Also your editing is going OK so far, it seems very likely that the cricket article that you created will be kept instead of being deleted. MPS1992 (talk) 18:35, 1 September 2016 (UTC)

Need assistance with a new editor

Hi, I've been working with an editor, Soshuvo who's focused on a specific singer from Bangladesh, Sania Sultana Liza, and related articles. The initial article was extremely promotional, reading more like a promo than an article. They are very resistant to changes from others, reverting back to versions with lots of WP:PUFFERY language or that use very stilted grammar. The past couple of days we were in an edit over an {{ExcessiveCitations}} tag on a specific section. They've got six citations for an album name and release date, and 6 other citations for another small claim. That small article has 39 references which is starting to get into attempted SEO territory. The editor does not communicate at all. They have slightly modified their editing style after I would leave a very direct message on their talk page, but never responded to anything. On this tag issue, they haven't responded at all and ended up blocked for 3RR violation. I strongly suspect that will continue, so I'm asking for someone who may be able to help and guide this editor. I'd also love it if someone could review the citations in the article and cut down on number a bit. The sources are all in Bengali and I don't trust Google Translate. The editor is also running afoul of image copyrights on commons, uploading multiple images used in the Liza and related articles and either claiming them as their own work or saying they were freely licensed. I left them a message about this, pointing out that some of their images could be uploaded here as fair use, but others couldn't. Help in better explaining that would also be appreciated. Thank you! Editing "Bangladesh textile industry"

Hi everyone, I'm looking to join this WikiProject as a student editor. I want to rewrite/revise the article "Bangladesh textile industry." I think a major issue with this article is its current structure and believe that serious restructuring will be needed to keep the flow chronological and organized. Sakuchia Badiuzzaman Dakhil Madrasah

Hi WP:BANGLADESH. Would someone mind taking a look at Sakuchia Badiuzzaman Dakhil Madrasah to see if it satisfies the notability requirements for a stand-alone article, It was created about a week ago, and it is only supported by a single citation to what looks like a business listing. The article has already been prodded for deletion once and is likely going to end up at WP:AFD if better sourcing cannot be shown to exist. If anyone can help improve the article or know where better sources can be found, please post a comment on the article's talk page. -- Marchjuly (talk) 07:23, 6 December 2016 (UTC)

@Marchjuly: I've added another government source, a Ministry of Education listing. A dakhil madrassa is a high school, so because of WP:SCHOOLOUTCOMES, taking it to AfD would probably be fruitless. --Worldbruce (talk) 15:52, 6 December 2016 (UTC)

2016 Community Wishlist Survey Proposal to Revive Popular Pages

Greetings WikiProject Bangladesh/Archive 6 Members!

This is a one-time-only message to inform you about a technical proposal to revive your Popular Pages list in the 2016 Community Wishlist Survey that I think you may be interested in reviewing and perhaps even voting for:

If the above proposal gets in the Top 10 based on the votes, there is a high likelihood of this bot being restored so your project will again see monthly updates of popular pages.

Further, there are over 260 proposals in all to review and vote for, across many aspects of wikis.

Thank you for your consideration. Please note that voting for proposals continues through December 12, 2016.

Correct Bengali spelling of name Samir?

I believe that the Bengali form of the name Samir, given in that article as সামির, was misspelled. I did some research and changed it, correctly I believe, to সমীর. This AfD was closed as delete, but if you find reliable sources in any language you can start a paragraph in Halishahar Thana about the mosque, and if it ever becomes substantial it can be spun out into a new article.
There are always other Bangladesh-related deletion discussions in need of thoughtful participation. See WP:DISCUSSAFD for how to contribute.
If you're in the mood for finding sources, WikiProject Bangladesh has:
  • 921 articles needing additional references
  • 808 articles with unsourced statements
  • 333 articles lacking sources
  • 260 BLP articles lacking sources
  • 167 articles lacking reliable references
  • 130 articles lacking in-text citations
  • 100+ articles with other reference problems

Categories and lists of schools

Category:Schools in Bangladesh and List of schools in Bangladesh are useful containers for other categories and lists, but are too broad for individual schools. If the list were expanded to include every school in Bangladesh (as its hatnote encourages) the page would be too large for Wikipedia.

Category:Schools in Bangladesh by district is a more manageable subcategory, but its use is incomplete and inconsistent. So far it has subcategories for only 10 of the 64 districts. I plan to create additional "Schools in ___ District" categories as needed. Half of the subcategories have the word "District" in their name. The other half do not, even though they contain schools throughout their district, not just in the district town. To make clear the scope of the sub-national school categories, I propose to rename them to include the word "District" (for example Category:Schools in Bogra → Category:Schools in Bogra District).

Similarly, I propose gradually spliting List of schools in Bangladesh into separate lists of schools by district until the national list is just a list of district-level lists. These improvements are intended make Bangladesh's school categories and lists more practical and more like those in other countries, such as Category:Schools in England and List of schools in England. --Worldbruce (talk) 02:25, 7 March 2017 (UTC)

Many cricket biographies draftified

An editor recently moved a large number of long-standing cricket biographies from article space to draft space. They did so because they felt the articles were poorly referenced. Part way through moving them, they sought, and received, approval for the move in a discussion that was not publicized to WikiProjects Cricket or Bangladesh. Since then there have been several threads at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Cricket discussing rescuing at least some of the pages and returning them to article space.

More than 100 of the remaining drafts are Bangladeshi cricketers. The next-largest group are Indian cricketers. Most started their careers at least a decade ago. Your assistance in evaluating these drafts and rescuing the ones that can be rescued would be appreciated. If you have access to sources beyond Cricket Archive and ESPNcricinfo, including non-English sources, that would be especially valuable. The effort is being coordinated at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Cricket. --Worldbruce (talk) 06:46, 5 September 2017 (UTC)

Wikipedia Page missing on Dudu Miyan

Wikipedia doesn't have article on Dudu Miyan, son of Haji Shariatullah, leaders of the Faraizi Movement. The content on him is readily available at http://en.banglapedia.org/index.php?title=Dudu_Miyan. Will be great if someone can find the resources and Draft an Article on him.
