Art+Feminism, Saturday, April 6th, 1-5pm edit

Participants at the May 2017 Art+Feminism event

Wikipedia’s gender trouble is well-documented. In a 2011 survey, the Wikimedia Foundation found that less than 10% of its contributors were women. While the reasons for the gender gap are up for debate, the practical effect of this disparity is not: content is skewed by the lack of representation from women.

Let’s change that.

To help change this, the Jacob Lawrence Gallery is continuing a series of Edit-a-thons to improve Wikipedia's coverage of womxn and gender non-binary artists of color.

Childcare, snacks from local businesses, and editing tutorials will be provided.

All you need to bring is your laptop, power cord, and ideas. No previous Wikipedia experience required!

Everyone is welcome. Access to UW wifi will be provided for non-UW affiliated participants.

Please create a Wikipedia account before the event.

Wikipedia Day 2019 — curating images from Asahel Curtis and older Seattle photos edit

Wikipedia Day celebrates the anniversary of the founding of Wikipedia. This year in Seattle, Cascadia Wikimedians' celebration of Wikipedia Day will focus on a different closely related project: Wikimedia Commons, which (among other things) functions as the media repository for Wikipedia. When you see a photo or map in Wikipedia, or hear an audio clip, etc., it usually is hosted on Wikimedia Commons and "transcluded" into Wikipedia.

Wikimedia Commons is a mix of users' own works and curated third-party content, either public domain or free-licensed. Our event is a hands-on workshop in curating third-party content, mostly early 20th-century photos of Seattle and other West Coast locations.

Currently, Wikimedia Commons has two intersecting sets of older photos, one from the Asahel Curtis Photo Company and the other a more general set of Seattle images. At this meetup, we will celebrate the 18th anniversary of Wikipedia by further curating these images by the creation and addition of categories, adding ImageNotes where useful, linking other versions of the same photo, enhancing the descriptions, and identifying and correcting errors. User:Jmabel has already categorized over 1000 images and corrected several hundred wrong dates, misidentified buildings, etc., but there is much more to be done.

For instance,

Many of the photos that still need work are in commons:Category:Seattle or commons:Category:Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition and properly belong in subcategories. Others are in maintenance categories such as commons:Category:Images from the Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition Collection to check or commons:Category:Images from the Asahel Curtis Photo Company Photographs Collection to check. There are probably many other images that need similar work, but these are a few obvious places to look. Also, in a few cases, Curtis or someone else in that era may have shot images that constitute a panorama, but no one has ever "stitched" them together into a unified image and uploaded it.

If you have been editing Wikipedia and are curious about what you could do within Wikimedia Commons besides just take photos and upload them, this would be an excellent place to start!

Art+Feminism, Saturday, May 12th, 1-5pm edit

Participants at the May 2017 Art+Feminism event

Wikipedia is one of the most wide-reaching repositories of shared knowledge yet a 2011 survey found that less than 10% of its contributors identify as female, suggesting an alarming absence of voices. What and how information is shared is skewed by this gender disparity. To help change this, the Jacob Lawrence Gallery is organizing a quarterly series of Edit-a-thons to improve Wikipedia's coverage of womxn artists of color.

This Saturday afternoon's gathering will focus on creating, editing, updating, and expanding pages for womxn artists from Latin America and the Caribbean. The Edit-a-thon will feature a talk by Dan Paz, Lecturer in the UW School of Art + Art History + Design.

Childcare, snacks from local businesses, and editing tutorials will be provided.

All you need to bring is your laptop, power cord, and ideas. No previous Wikipedia experience required!

Everyone is welcome. Access to UW wifi will be provided for non-UW affiliated participants.

Dan Paz is an artist and educator who explores the labor of digital imaging production as a collaborative site where the intersections of the image-idea and lived experience are produced and contested. Through videos, photography, and sculptural projects that query the ability of documentary processes to be manipulated—to be multiplied and replicated, stopped and started, rewound and advanced—Dan works within the impossibilities of absolute replication to question the very ability of the image to truly represent.

Check the Facebook event page for updates.

When: Saturday, May 12th, 1-5pm
Where: Jacob Lawrence Gallery, Art Building #132, 1915 NE Chelan Ln, Seattle, Washington 98105

Despite its wide reach, content on Wikipedia suffers from the bias of its editors: white, technically inclined, English-speaking men that live in developed, majority-Christian countries. This represents an alarming absence of voices in an increasingly important repository of shared knowledge.

In an effort to change this, the Jake is organizing a Wikipedia Edit-a-thon on Saturday, May 6th, 1 - 5 pm. Our mission is to bring together diverse communities to participate in Wikipedia editing, and improve its coverage of queer people and women of color in the arts.

We will provide childcare, snacks, and tutorials for the beginner editor.

Bring your laptop, power-cord and ideas for entries that need updating or creation. No previous Wikipedia experience required!

Memorial Day 2016 edit

  • There will be a Wikimedians hike at Evans Creek Preserve (see www.wta.org/go-hiking/hikes/evans-creek-preserve. We meet at the *old* trailhead at 12 PM. Please bring cameras and/or tools suitable for taking notes (smartphone, tablet, or pencil and paper notepad). The reports are that there is plenty of wildlife. (You might want to bring bear spray just in case we encounter a bear.) The current weather forecast is for partial sun in the afternoon
  • There will likely be a break between the hike and the evening meeting.
  • At 6 PM, we will have our monthly meetup. We'll meet this time at the Redmond Town Center Starbucks. We can choose a place to eat after we all find each other. Agenda items include documenting the hike, upcoming GLAM and diversity conferences, WikiConference USA in San Diego, Wiknic planning, and a brief update about our 501(c)(3) and plans for the rest of 2016. There *may* be an announcement with news from WMF (I'm waiting to hear back follow up from an initial email.) There will likely be time for additional agenda items and open discussion.

Discussion

There has been a lot of talk in the Wikipedia community about producing more video. I have a friend in Seattle who is a videographer and amateur filmmaker. She is planning to attend this meetup and bring her camera. Could one of you, any of you, all of you be prepared to give a short presentation on anything Wikipedia related so that she can record you? I am floating the idea that a videographer would be useful to have at Wikipedia events, both to capture presentations by scheduled speakers and also to give any Wikipedian the opportunity to present in a video. If anyone would be willing to be recorded then I would appreciate it. Perhaps plan to speak for 3 minutes explaining any Wikipedia topic when you are in a corner of Allegro and the camera is stationary on you. In the longer term, I am hoping that there can be assistance in helping Wikipedians film video with slidesets, as here. Thanks. Blue Rasberry (talk) 20:44, 5 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Spring 2015 UW Community Data Science Workshops - register by April 3rd! edit

Hi Cascadians! There will be another set of Community Data Science Workshops at UW starting on April 10th. Details here. Apply by April 3rd for best consideration. The series consists of one Friday evening and three saturday sessions. It is free and open to the public, and lunch is included! You don't need to know anything about programming or data science to participate. If you do already know a little Python, please consider registering as a mentor—these workshops require a lot of individual mentorship to work, and it's a lot of fun (and you might still learn something!). Ping me if you have any questions. Also: could someone post this annoucement to Cascadia.wiki? I don't have an account there yet. Cheers, - J-Mo Talk to Me Email Me 21:47, 25 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Cascadia board meeting, January 27 2015, from 6pm to 9pm edit

As announced on lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikimedia-cascadia, the next Cascadia Wikimedians User Group board meeting will be at the Mercer Island Library. If you plan to attend remotely, please note that.

Agenda (remaining business from last meeting)
Founding board members with voting responsibilities: AnotherBeliever, Brianhe, Peaceray, Pine, Mako, and Ragesoss.
  • Goals, budget and calendar. We can submit supplemental budget requests in May or later. We can also submit requests to WMDC for smaller items.
  • Strategic goals complete
  • 2015 calendar of projects and events
  • Added development of award scoring to the tasks for the Program Committee
  • 2015 goals
  • Changes to align with WMF Global Metrics
  • 2015 expenditures (almost complete)
  • Added budget line with $0 for dependent care expenses at events. We can take funds from the reserve and/or request supplemental funds if we decide to sponsor events where dependent care will be provided. We currently have no firm plans to do so, which is why the budget is currently $0.
  • Added $30 fee from Secretary of State for nonprofit corporation registration. This appears to be separate from and addition to the Department of Revenue business license cost.
  • Added Google Apps subscription fees. Once we become eligible for Google for Nonprofits, the apps subscriptions will be free.
  • 2015 income, may be adjusted if WMDC approves a grant request
  • 2015 2nd half stretch goals
  • Chair of the Board, Vice Chair of the Board, President, Secretary, and Treasurer
  • Board Committee assignments

Question

Are these Seattle meetup pages archived? If not, they probably should, especially if they are related to the Cascadia user group. I know we will discuss the website this evening, but I wonder if we might also want to have a designated page here at English Wikipedia for Cascadia-related notes, meetups, activities, etc. Of course, already have the Meta-Wiki page, so that may be overkill. I imagine most of our activities will take place here, though. ---Another Believer (Talk) 20:00, 13 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Monthly meeting December 2014 edit

The December 2014 meetup is a joint holiday event with Seattle TA3M and the Seattle Privacy Coalition. It will feature lightning talks and an extended discussion of Wikimedia's interoperability with Tor. Information is available on the Cascadia Wikimedians public mailing list.

Event report
  • The signup spreadsheet had 30 unique registrations after removing one person who backed out and two duplicate entries, and I counted about 30 people present at the event.
  • Affiliations noted on the signup spreadsheet include TA3M Seattle, Cascadia Wikimedians User Group, the University of Washington, Seattle Privacy Coalition, and SURF Incubator.
  • We had six speakers. The presentations were about the following subjects:
  1. Overview of Surf Incubator
  2. Firmware manifesto to OEMs
  3. Privacy and Wikipedia Zero
  4. Ricochet instant messaging software
  5. Lightning photography with free software
  6. Overview of the Seattle Privacy Coalition
  • We had a roundtable discussion about editing Wikipedia through Tor and open proxies.
  • We had more pizza than we needed (:
  • Anecdotal reports are that the venue was good, the food was good, the presentations were good, and the networking was good.
  • The suggestion has been made that we hold a similar event in December of next year.

Community Data Science Workshops edit

I'm helping Benjamin_Mako_Hill with a series of programming workshops at UW, focused on learning how to use data science tools & methods to explore large public datasets. Because we are who we are, we'll be working with a lot of Wikipedia data. The workshops will take place on three saturdays between April and May. Participation is free and open to the public. You don't have to have any experience with programming, science, etc. to participate—that's kind of the point, in fact. Signup instructions are on the website! Ping me or Mako if you have questions. Wikiconference USA 2014 edit

Please come if you can!

Hello! In New York City Friday 30 May - Sunday 1 June Wikiconference USA will be held as a national United States Wikipedia meetup hosted by Wikimedia New York City and Wikimedia DC. All are welcome to attend. Scholarship applications to cover travel expenses are accepted until the end of March and presentation submissions are requested until that time but can be accepted until closer to the conference.

In previous years New York City conferences have gathered 150 attendees. At this conference we are hoping for more people to attend.

It would be nice if participants and supporters of the Seattle meetup could attend. Anyone with questions may contact me or any of the other organizers, or post on the conference website. Blue Rasberry (talk) 22:02, 12 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Wikimedia Research & Data Hackathon, November 9th, 2013 edit

Hi all! First off, it was great to meet you today and/or see you again. I'm thrilled that my first Seattle Meetup was so well-attended and interesting.

I mentioned during the event that I'm coordinating the Seattle Research & Data Hackathon on Saturday, November 9th. This inaugural research hackathon will be a relatively informal event: there's a broad proposed agenda here, but we can really make the day whatever we want. Probably topics of conversation/collaboration include:

  • research tools and datasets (and how to use them)
  • burning research questions (and how to ask and answer them)
  • ongoing research projects (and how to get involved)
  • new research projects (...you get the idea).

The hackathon is for both interested local Wikipedians and students and researchers from UW. The event will be held semi-concurrently with other hackathons in Minnesota, San Francisco, the UK, and elsewhere, hosted by WMF researchers and Wikipedians from around the world. There will be open IRC channels and Google Hangouts throughout the day so that we can share ideas and even collaborate with the other sites and with Wikipedians who don't have a hackathon in their area.

Afterwards, I'd be happy to re-convene somewhere on the Ave for food and drink. Please sign up, spread the word, and let me know if you have any questions!

I look forward to seeing you at next months' meetup if not sooner. Cheers, - J-Mo Talk to Me Email Me 05:24, 9 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Seventh meetup edit

Saturday, June 25, 2011 - Wikipedia:Meetup/Seattle7

You ought to be outside picnicking anyway, so why not go to a place with other Wikipedians doing the same thing? Wikipedia is promoting June 25 as an international Wikipedia picnic day, the Wikipedia:Wiknic!

Reddit, another popular information website, has an active Seattle community which was already organizing a picnic at Golden Gardens Park on this day. Their organizers have asked Wikipedians to join in and share common interests in information sharing, the beach, and barbecue.

The link to the Reddit picnic can be found here. Please join!

Sixth meetup edit

Sessions: April 8 and April 18, 2009 See Wikipedia:Meetup/Seattle6 for a more detailed account of this meetup.

Note that this is to gather Wikipedians, but not in the traditional style of a meetup. Our research group, from the University of Washington (Seattle campus), is looking for user input to help design an application that will eventually be released to the Wikipedia community. Please see Wikipedia:Meetup/Seattle6 for more information.

Fifth meetup edit

tentative: June 19, 2008 See Wikipedia:Meetup/Seattle5 for a more detailed account of this meetup.

Still in the planning phases. Some researchers at the University of Washington have expressed interest in helping organize this meetup.

Fourth meetup edit

September 9, 2006. See Wikipedia:Meetup/Seattle4 for a more detailed account of this meetup.

Topics of conversation included:

Third meetup edit

14 January 2006 See Wikipedia:Meetup/Seattle3 for a more detailed account of this meetup.

Topics of conversation included:

Second meetup edit

15 January 2005 See Wikipedia:Meetup/Seattle2 for a more detailed account of this meetup.

Topics of conversation included:

  • Wikipedia Signpost, Wikipedia's new internal newspaper, started by Michael Snow.
  • SeattleWiki [1], started by Matiasp.
  • Possible contact with small, local history museums; DanKeshet and Jmabel followed up to the point of writing Wikipedia:Museum projects, though there has not yet been systematic outreach.
  • Whether some (maybe 1%?) of articles are either sufficiently controversial or sufficient "vandal magnets" that our normal, open way of free-for-all editing may just not work for these; suggestion of starting dialogue on alternatives. Jmabel will probably try to start discussion on this.
  • Larry Sanger's recent criticisms of Wikipedia, and the issues of elitism/anti-elitism
  • ... and we pretty much all seem to think Seattle is ready to be a featured article.

First meetup edit

6 November 2004 See Wikipedia:Meetup/Seattle1 for a more detailed account of this meetup.

The first Seattle Meetup took place Saturday, 6 November 2004 at the Seattle Central Library and was a great success. Decumanus says it was "fantastic". Participants came from a geographic area ranging from Portland, Oregon to Vancouver, British Columbia.

Topics of discussion included:

  • How to get librarians to understand Wikipedia so they might consider it worthy of being an authorative source. (Within days after the meeting, this led to a pretty good start on a document at Wikipedia:Researching with Wikipedia.)
  • Licensing issues
  • Possible software changes that might allow POV-type overlays
  • Wikipedia war stories about POV warriors, trolls, etc.
  • BryceHarrington regaled us with tales of the wild and wooly early days of GNUPedia and Nupedia, and how he made the leap to Wikipedia.
  • User:Jwrosenzweig earned our sympathy with his stories about being on the arbitration committee, a thankless task for which none of us seemed to envy him.
  • We came to a quasi-agreement, mostly through a nodding of heads, that a system of committees that might judge the worthiness of questionable content (rather than just violation of Wikipedia rules per se), might save everyone lots of pain and heartache. As of November 12, however, no one has begun fleshing this into a concrete proposal.

After initially gathering at the coffee cart we moved to the 10th floor, under the slanted roof designed by Rem Koolhaas We also tried our hands at Michael Snow's Wikipedia quiz.

At six o'clock most of us adjourned to have dinner in Seattle's International District, at a Chinese restaurant, Hing Loon.
