The goal was to gather a very wide range of diverse international opinions, because of the tremendous controversy associated with the previous requested-move (wheel-warring, arbitration, etc). It's for that reason that I took the highly unusual step of posting to completely unrelated regional WikiProjects, to try to get a definitive resolution. — P.T. It was definitely rather unusual but it would seem more appropriate to post on projects that at least have some connection with the issue rather than willi nilly cluttering several unrelated project talk pages. If Ireland had a town, village or townland by that name I could see a real point, otherwise Wikipedia:Requests for comment/History and geography would appear to be a better place. I considered removing all the non-related post but decided it was too much trouble. That's just my thoughts. ww2censor (talk) 05:07, 26 June 2012 (UTC)

Deleted Jenny Fulle image

I don't think so. I've nominated it for deletion as missing a source. The uploader tried hard to convince me the image should be kept but failed to contribute to the deletion discussion at all and does not appear to understand the non-free policy. Per the conversation above and File:Jennyatbat2.jpg, this image is actually totally different from the deleted Jennyatbat.png. The latter image was a newspaper clipping that I could not get the rights to. I then went straight to Jenny Fulle and retrieved the current image, File:Jennyatbat2.jpg from her. Her stepfather took this photo when she was in little league and gave it to her. She confirmed that she owned the copyright and she sent an email to permissions explaining her ownership and permission, using the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 License. I filled in the source information as best as I knew how. In your description on my talk page of what needs to be done, you said, "If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright." So I put that information in, and thought the issue was resolved, but obviously it wasn't, which I apologize for. Please let me know what further information you need from me so that I can prevent File:Jennyatbat2.jpg from being deleted. As previously mentioned you need to get the copyright holder to verify their permission to the OTRS Team and you said they were doing so, however, the application of the tickets can take some time, sometime up to a month, so assuming they gave the image name, it will be restored when the permission is proven acceptable. Wikipedia does not always follow the styles used in books and journals. It appears much more integrated to combine the Notes and Sources because many of the notes are derived from the sources, so integration seems more appropriate. There is nothing sub-optimal about the book and journal practice but by convention that is the way they do it. ww2censor (talk) 02:48, 28 July 2012 (UTC)

Heroes Welcome UK

Hi, I just need a little clarification, some time ago Wikipedia suggested that I should try and link the Heroes Welcome Article to other relating and connecting wikipedia articles, and this is something I have been doing as and when an opportunity arises.(you can probably track these?) . Yesterday I added a section to the Mariah Mundi and the Midas Box article (it seemed the most appropriate way of adding the piece) headed inspiring communities. I believed this article to be very relevant bearing in mind the well reported association between the Mariah Mundi series of books and the Heroes Welcome story. I noticed this morning that this new section was removed by one of the originating writers who seem to go under the same name as the film production company. The editor who removed your recent edits has been blocked for their conflict of interest. However, the way you introduced Heroes Welcome was too focused on the organisation and its fund raising. I would be more inclined to introduce the facts about the connection to the character being based on John Senior with a very short reference to the organisation and its funding by selling the books. Focus on the direct connection to the topic because details of where and how it is sold are just fluff and not informative, or relative, to that article. Remember less is often more. Perhaps there is other information available that could be added to a section about the characters. BTW, you should only sign the end of your posts and nowhere else, not in the header, as you did above, or in your edit summaries, as I see you have already admonished on your talk page. my bad. questioning the date of 2011, in your cited reference--when i went to the reference i see it is stated so. however, there is a 'copyright' date on the sheet of this Forever stamp that i bought yesterday, and it shows the c-symbol for copyright and 2010 USPS. a trivial matter i suppose. what would be of interest, is what the 2001 calligraphy text actually says, and what the 2011 stamp calligraphed text says. thanks for your help on my concerns. pls feel free to correct me, too. Is it legal to upload photo's from Google.

Hi I'm am wanting to upload a photo from Google to (sport in the United States) on the section (Australian rules football). Hi Keith. That's because the site is a commercial website and therefore fails WP:EL. He may well be a good dealer with good material and information but if there are non-commercial one that exist we should use them. Did you notice the copyright link at the bottom right of the page which links to this page? It clearly affirms copyright for all the material on the site specifically for commercial use and as we do not accept any non-commercial restrictions, so you are out of luck unless you can get an image freely licenced by the copyright holder, or it is old enough to have fallen out of copyright. It is not a matter of too much passion just enthusiasm. Please remember that we do not link years. I removed them several times already but you keep adding more. Forget about it and stop!! Also, please remember that you are writing about the past so unless you are quoting, you should be using the past tense. Many more citations are needed throughout and right now there are very few indeed but you really should to try and find English language ones that can be checked by English readers. Also I notice that you have many redlinks. This can be a problems unless you intend to write article about those people, see WP:WTAF. Who will write them? Probaly no one, so they stay red and that is ugly, so unless they are really important people who happen to be missing an article just don't make a redlink. Good luck and I will keep watching and correcting as I have time, but please don't make me correct problems that you now know about and should not be making. Slow down; there is no hurry. A stub is not a list. A list is what it says, it is a list and not intended to be an article as such. In the beginning of the description for stubs it tells you exactly what it is and goes not to give examples and details that are helpful. I never stated any of the things you mention above and most of what you wrote is accurate depending on the country. What exactly is your misunderstanding? Probably best to remove all of my uploaded images

Perhaps it would be best to delete all of the images I have uploaded. A photo taken by me has been deleted already based on the (mistaken) belief that it was "stolen" from another website. In fact, that was a photo I created and allowed my local hospital to use in its literature. This photo was apparently subsequently used by the HSE's website and therefore appeared, at first glance, to be the property of the HSE. Neither I nor my friends wish for our personal details to be displayed on Wikipedia. We take photos and share them with others, therefore our work will often be found in many places. If we cannot display our work without including our personal details, then we consent to having it removed. I can appreciate the need to have verifiable images on Wikipedia and understand your reasons for not wishing to use our work.JD2 (talk) 22:02, 14 December 2012 (UTC)

Some of your images, especially the montages are rather good, though others are/were of low web quality. Neither you nor your friends have to share personal details here. You can register without giving them, however all images you upload must be clearly freely licenced and if it is not clear that the images are your, you can easily verify the images with our OTRS Team by following the procedure found at WP:CONSENT. When images have metadata and are not of web resolution, as you could have supplied for the image that was deleted, we might not question the image but it appeared to be an exact pixel for pixel copy and that just looks like you copied it instead of uploading your original image. If the image already deleted was your, then you need to say so clearly from the beginning but changing a claim from, you and your friends, to claiming they are all your, looks mighty suspicious. You just need to explain the situation verifiably to the OTRS volunteers and if they are satisfied then there is no problem. The image, and those under review, could be kept and even restored if they have been deleted. Try it you may be surprised. Good luck. ww2censor (talk) 22:57, 14 December 2012 (UTC)

I haven't changed my claim - I maintain in my last post that myself and my friends took the pictures. I accept, however, that this is not good enough for the purposes of ensuring copyright protection on Wikipedia. While my friends and I do not care about who uses our photos, I (and I'm sure they) understand that it is important on this website.

I am not prepared to go to the effort of arranging for us all to register our details here, nor am I prepared to look for where I have stored the original version of the deleted image (I freely admit I copied the version of my image used by the HSE rather than looking for it in my own files). I am somewhat of a novice in these matters and don't really have an interest in becoming more expert. If I knew how to delete my own images from Wikipedia, I would. As I already stated, there is no need to register any personal details for you, as you have already not done when registering your account, nor do your friends have to give such details. You can upload any files you own the copyright of yourself AND wish to be freely licenced. As for your friends, they don't even have to register. BTW the copyright protection is for the author of the images and not as such for us though we don't don't want to be sued for hosing copyright violations, we do need to know they are genuinely permitted by the author. You can upload your friends images and they can simply email their WP:CONSENT to the OTRS Team for any image they wish to freely licence too. Any discussion or questions is done privately and does not appear on any main site pages and is only available for a few editors with rights to view such communications. It is that simple without ANY need to provide ANY personal details that could be seen by the public on any wikipedia pages. Unfortunately you cannot delete your images but you can allow a deletion nomination to be completed or you can add the template {{db-author}} to any of your uploads to show you want them deleted. Removal of WikiProject tags from file talk pages

Hi, I noticed you removed the {{WikiProject Ireland}} templates I added to File talk:Flag of Ireland.svg, File talk:Flag of Ireland (gold).svg, File talk:Green harp flag of Ireland 17th century.svg, and File talk:Civil Ensign of the United Kingdom.svg, your reason being "we don't assess images especially those hosted on the commons". Wikipedia:WikiProject Ireland doesn't mention anything against tagging file talk pages; the fact that Category:File-Class Ireland articles exists suggests the opposite of your claim. Additionally, there is no policy or guideline barring users from tagging file talk pages of files hosted on Commons with WikiProject templates. Unless I'm missing something, the removal of these templates seems like a unilateral decision on your part. — ξ^xplicit 01:33, 29 December 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for your clear advice to OST. Apologies that my statement re Fair Use at the Talk Page seems to have caused confusion. I had not realised they were from Googlemaps. I have now adjusted my comment there. Btw. I did not realise that dummy sheep and Photoshop were fair game!! Does that mean we can simply airbrush out all the offending lamp-posts and roadsigns from imperfect geograph pictures?! At last, that inflatable sheep I keep under the bed can be put to good use... Don't you always wonder about those farmers with inflatable sheep who own wellingtons and the sheep keep reversing towards them? I'm not saying that Photoshop and dummy sheep are the way to go but it could be an option if done professionally. Remember that freely licenced images can be modified so you could remove some offending items, again if done well. If you are not good at that sort of stuff you can make a request at the Graphics Lab/Photography workshop for some image cleanup. Martin, there are a few on the commons here already but pre-1923 US published images are in the public domain and you can do specific searches by licence such as a Google advanced search but that does not bring up anything, so you will have to look elsewhere, like the LOC or a Flickr Creative Commons search (in that case you must be careful to determine if the licence is in fact free). Stephen Crowe Photo

Hello there,

Regarding the page for Stephen Crowe (composer) the image was deleted as it had insufficient information. I did add the place the photo was taken, the date of the photograph, the photographer's name and the fact that he did give permission to use the image. I also included his email address, having read somewhere that this could be useful. I might not have inserted all the correct information straight away (which is why I kept trying to re-upload the image), but endeavored to do so on about my third attempt.

While you did give some information, as far as I recall, you failed to provide the most important information which is under what copyright the copyright holder, who is usually the photographer, released the image. And while you say you gave the photographer's email, we don't do the running to get his permission or verify his permission, that onus is on the uploader to provide. Unfortunately it is possible to upload images without actually providing all the necessary information though the process does try to lead you through all the possible scenarios so that you don't miss out necessary information as you did. If you wish you can get the image restored but you will need the copyright holder to verify their permission, depending on what copyright licence they are prepared to release the image under, by following the procedure found at WP:CONSENT making sure to mention the image name. While using source texts can be tricky, it is certainly better than leaving the statement entirely unsourced. Some rewording of the text may be necessary: It is not clear to my reading the extent to which the Irish peers' lists indicating their votes (for representative peers) were public. Normally, even when using a single reference, one adds a citation to each statement that could be questioned. Another way of doing it is to add the book as a source and refer to each citation simply by the name of the author, (date) and page number, per Postage stamps of Ireland#References and sources; look at the Feldman or Gibbons or other multiple citations. Comment on Quoting paragraphs from scholarly articles

In one of my articles I am still creating, on a play, isn't quoting entire paragraph fair use? Coz I include quotation marks and also rovide valid references. If one makes extensive quotations it's a copyright violation. One can usually make a synopsis and quote one or two succinct sentences together with a citation. Extensive passages are not necessary and are a problem. I don't want to discourage you but this is an issue. If you want someone with extensive copyright experience to comment or review your proposed article, I suggest Moonriddengirl though she is now on wiki staff so you may not get an immediate response from her. But please stop reuploading the same image again and again; it does no use. You have to fix the problem by editing the information, as I have already told you. At the time I reviewed it, the enwiki image was not in the article and the commons image had been deleted because it had been missing a licence since 2009. The history of the image shows that licencing has been changed a number of times before it was moved to the commons and that would appear to be due to a lack of understanding of the elements of the photo. As explained in my post the {{PD-RU-exempt}} does not (and cannot) apply as there are no official Russian elements in the image. It is entirely incorrect and improper to this image. The the only Russian elements are the Cyrillic characters and they are not copyrightable. The postal label from the French post office is likely in copyright, but may be, as claimed by one post, to be de minimis, however we still need a licence for the image itself and the original uploader 5 years ago claims he does not know where he got the image so cannot help is that regard. Without a proper licence the image is non-free and therefore also replaceable. Your idea of cropping it really an attempt at getting around the problem but as a derivative image it should only have the same licence as the original it was extracted from. I'm still for a delete. That's fine. there were two of your images and I only realised you were an experienced user so tempered the 2nd post manually. I'm just going through some orphaned images; some have been replaced by other images and as you say may not be correct but you have fixed it, so that's good. I'm not sure what to do. They did it to ...Baby One More Time (album) as well, and reverted my restoration of the original images. On Britney (album) as well.
