Guatemalan articles

@Halias 23: First of all, while it is OK to make the occasional friendly comment in another language, entire conversations must be in English unless there is a very specific need for it to be in another language. This is so that other editors who read this are not excluded from the conversation, as I have said this is a very transparent community and as you have noticed we read each other's talk pages and leave comments on them all the time. It is also good for you to practice your English in conversations so that it will improve your skills when writing articles, and since I only speak a little Spanish it is very possible that I may misunderstand some important details in your post.
Don't worry about the time, there is no deadline on the Wikipedia. Good luck with the moving, and when you come back try to do the teaming-up-thing we talked about. Since you created the articles directly in the main space, who knows, maybe someone else have corrected them for you by the time you come back. And while we are one the subject: In the future, please make a draft for the article first. That way you do not risk it being deleted while you are working on it.
I'm not quite sure what you mean by the comment on the Template:Ethnic groups in Guatemala, there are such templates for almost every country so why shouldn't there be one for Guatemala. If you are concerned about what to include on it, it is a bit above my expertise and you have to ask someone at the Teahouse. The only thing I did to if was to substitute all the redirects for the articles that you finally end up at, that is as far as my knowledge goes. :) Move safely!^^ w.carter-Talk 10:46, 18 November 2014 (UTC)
@W.carter:

You are one of the kindest and helpful people.

So I will keep practicing English to write pages to understand and discussions, the problem is that I understand perfectly english when someone writes or talks to me, but my fluency and my writing are fucked, but I will follow your instructions and when I create a page I will create a project, Meanwhile, I will be edited in the pages of demographics of the countries in Latin America. Thanks and Spend an great night :D. (Halias 23) 17:54, 18 November 2014 (UTC)

Again, the Wall

Hello! I just wanted to say, fantastic work on the Wall this past time, it's coming along really nicely now. I'm right now in the middle of the moving (changing apartments on Saturday) so I have to concentrate on other things for a while. But I was thinking, don't you think the "under construction" template could be removed soon? Anyways, catch you on the other side! Yakikaki (talk) 17:10, 18 November 2014 (UTC)

@Yakikaki:Hi! I was sort of thinking the same, but then I thought it might be best to leave it be until all the "Not done, ref will be added" were removed. I'll see if I can do something about it later tonight. It is almost appropriate to have a long "under construction" for something that is so long and took so long to construct. :) I'll be AFK for a few hours now. You just concentrate on the moving (lot of that going around right now...^^) and I'll keep an eye on things here and send a random prayer to some Patron Saint of Moving Things to keep you and your stuff safe. :) w.carter-Talk 17:28, 18 November 2014 (UTC)
@Yakikaki: I also made this little thing/template, if you want to put it on your talk page: {{User:W.carter/moving}} :). Happy trails! w.carter-Talk 19:40, 18 November 2014 (UTC)

thanks

Hey thanks for the patience and understanding as I'm going to probably have a plethora of questions as I come across things along the way. I have posted on a suggested editable entry but not entirely sure if others will respond. Is my watch list able to only be viewed by me or can other registered users view it as well? Have a great one Needs2learnmore talk 05:47, 19 November 2014 (UTC)

@Needs2learnmore: Hi, I assume you are talking about your posts at Talk:Guy Fieri. Sooner or later someone will respond if you post on an article's talk page, but sometimes some patience is required. :) If you want a prompt response for some specific reason, you can always post about it at the Teahouse. This time, I have left you my reply's at the talk page. I am pleased to see that you have now learned how to use the four ~~~~. You are the only one who can see your watchlist. These are personal and not for others to view. Best, w.carter-Talk 13:14, 19 November 2014 (UTC)
The talk page I was referring to wasn't the one for Talk:Guy Fieri but rather a randomly suggested page for a British television show that aired before I was born. Hope that helped. Needs2learnmore talk 02:37, 20 November 2014 (UTC)
so the page I posted suggestions on I noticed about two hours ago from the time of me sending this that the entry for the BBritish television show was last active around 4 years ago. My suggestion might make for some type of activity on the page
@Needs2learnmore:Ok, so let's hope you get some answers and activity. But remember that if you want some help or suggestions for something, you must be more specific and post a link to that page rather than just vague, cryptic mentioning. My mindreading is apparently off for the moment. All the best, w.carter-Talk 08:12, 20 November 2014 (UTC)

Hello Halias 23. I understand that this one is a bit tricky. But when you are asked if you want to open the pdf-file you can see the address of the original page/archive where the pdf originates. In this case it is http://revistas.ucr.ac.cr/ . The easiest way to search for a document on such a site is by searching with the author's name, Guiselle Marín Araya, enter that in the "Buscar"-box and select "Todo". Then you get to this page: http://revistas.ucr.ac.cr/index.php/index/search/search (only with Guiselle Marín Araya's name and two articles, that link didn't work here, sorry) where you find the article you are trying to cite "Españoles en la ciudad de San José a fines del siglo XIX y principios del XX". Click on the "Resumen" and you end up at the start-page for the article: http://revistas.ucr.ac.cr/index.php/anuario/article/view/1938 . Now you have a proper web-address for the article since you can access the "Texto completo:" from that page. Your reference should then look like this:
  • <ref>{{cite web|last1=Marín Araya|first1=Guiselle|title=Españoles en la ciudad de San José a fines del siglo XIX y principios del XX|trans_title=Spaniards in the city of San José at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th|url=http://revistas.ucr.ac.cr/index.php/anuario/article/view/1938|website=http://revistas.ucr.ac.cr/|publisher=Universidad de Costa Rica|accessdate=23 November 2014}}</ref>
Hope this helps. Best, w.carter-Talk 00:13, 23 November 2014 (UTC)
Buenas Noches a tí tambien, w.carter-Talk 00:48, 23 November 2014 (UTC)

Great job! Keep up the great work! E-e-bayer_lover (talk) 22:16, 17 December 2014 (UTC)
Dear E-e-bayer_lover, while I really appreciate the thought that goes with the barnstar and I may sound ungrateful, you might want to go a bit easy on them. These are not something you hand out like "likes" at Facebook. A simple thank you will do just as well.   This is what Wikipedia says about them:
  • Barnstars. You might be given a "barnstar" in recognition of some especially fine contributions you made to some articles, or for some special clean up work you did. "Trading" barnstars, such as "I'll give you one if you give me one", is not a good idea. Barnstars should not be handed out lightly; they are a recognition of achievement, like getting a prize at school.
  • Wikilove can be used slightly more liberally to give each other a big hug for being nice and helpful.
All the best, w.carter-Talk 22:31, 17 December 2014 (UTC)
I'm not "handing" them out. Really, You've been extremely helpful!!!

For the star on China painting. This is a fascinating area rich in sources and pictures. Canton porcelain could certainly use expansion. It seems to have been a huge commercial operation, and I think very interesting in the interaction between cultures. Aymatth2 (talk) 01:58, 30 November 2014 (UTC)

@Aymatth2: Yes, I agree that it is fascinating, and I will do my best once I am done expanding the main Swedish East India Company. The fantastic thing about Wikipedia is that it allows us to cooperate with editors representing all the different cultures trading during that era, each adding their own pieces to the puzzle. AYUDA URGENTE

Hello ELreydeEspana. I'm sorry, but no one but you can access your account. This is not the first time I've seen this happen to someone. Didn't you have your account connected to an e-mail address? That is the only way you can get your access back. Otherwise you will have to go with this new account and put a note on both your old and new account about what has happened and that you have both accounts. About the name of your new account... I'm not so sure you can keep it. To call yourself "The king of Spain" might not be within the rules for names on the Wikipedia. You may be asked to change it. Salud, w.carter-Talk 18:39, 1 December 2014 (UTC)
@ELreydeEspana:I'm sorry that this has happened, but if you are not in too much of a hurry to edit, I suggest that you wait a day or two and just relax and do something else, sleep on it, maybe then the old password will come back to you. Such things usually works for me when I forget. :) And IF you do remember it, change the password to something you will not forget! Like the name of the place you were when you started at the Wikipedia or something like that. :) w.carter-Talk 18:54, 1 December 2014 (UTC)

@ELreydeEspana: Some of these moves may require assistance from an administrator, so this is really a question for Philg88 (who is an admin). Mentorship

w.carter, what do you think about becoming my mentor in English Wiki? Ochilov (talk) 13:42, 7 December 2014 (UTC)

@Ochilov: Thank you for your kind request, but I am too much of a free spirit to tie myself to such a commitment. My way of helping newcomers is much less formal (besides, I have not been here for such a long time myself, just long enough to pick up a thing or three). I monitor and watch the progress of editors that I help, I show up now and again with helpful tips and most of the time I am available for your questions as your friend. I think that is all you really need. There are other editors who take on adoptees but that is mostly for younger editors who have trouble with understanding how the coding works and have never heard of a script, and you are way beyond that.   Let's keep it this way for now. It is how I was tutored here and I think it turned out rather well. Always welcome! w.carter-Talk 14:00, 7 December 2014 (UTC)

Lucia at S:t Hansgatan in Visby

Update

This is an update for those of you who had a hard time believing that these things actually happen. When I went through Visby at six o'clock pm, the Lucia party was still in full swing with small Lucia-gangs roaming the streets. This band had their show in a window and attracted quite a crowd. w.carter-Talk 18:54, 13 December 2014 (UTC)

Look

Hi, W.carter! Look at this interesting template that I created:

You can put it on your talkpage, by using {{Keeping discussion}}, if you probably want it. Ochilov (talk) 17:36, 13 December 2014 (UTC)

@Ochilov:Hello! That is a very nice template you made, and thank you for the offer but I think I'll keep my page the way it is for now. Maybe you can make another version of it that I can include when I post my messages about how to alert other users on the talk pages of new users. With a text like this:
  • If a thread is started on your talk page, please answer there. Most editors will put your page on their watchlist.
  • If you started a discussion on someone else's talk page, they will probably answer there.

It would be nice to have, but only if you feel like doing such a template too. :) Cheers, w.carter-Talk 17:57, 13 December 2014 (UTC)

Hey, you have a great page for helping newbies. Well done! And template that you requested - I will try to make this, using Wikimedia labs and C++, it will help many users, I think --Ochilov (talk) 18:03, 13 December 2014 (UTC)
Thank you. You can always copy things from it if you want to help some newbie. Just remember to change the "W.carter" to "Ochilov". No rush with the template, take your time. Oh, and one more thing: Now that you are becoming more used to the Wikipedia, you should start to make edit summaries when you post. I am sure you have seen that this is almost an alternate form of communicating here, like mine here, and your edits get very anonymous and hard for others to distinguish if you don't write something in the summery. The policy is that every edit should always have some sort of summary, even if it is just a word or a letter. w.carter-Talk 18:15, 13 December 2014 (UTC)
Yup, I will do it from now. I just always forget about it. Do we have any script, which would remind about putting summary? --Ochilov (talk) 18:29, 13 December 2014 (UTC)
Great! Nope, no script for this, instead you check a box at your "Preferences" under the "Editing"-tab where it says: "Prompt me when entering a blank edit summary". w.carter-Talk 18:41, 13 December 2014 (UTC)
Okay. I thing it would be nice to create this script, do you think so? --Ochilov (talk) 18:47, 13 December 2014 (UTC)

Perhaps, for now I think the message works rather well. I don't know how to write scripts, I just use them. ;) But if you have an idea of how to make something useful for this, you should take it to the Wikipedia:Village pump (technical) to see what they say. w.carter-Talk 18:51, 13 December 2014 (UTC)

  • No, I don't want to ask them to make script. I know programming so I will try to do it myself. --Ochilov (talk) 19:07, 13 December 2014 (UTC)
@Ochilov: I suspected you could, I only meant for feedback and ideas. Once you have some sort of script, you need to have it tested by some experienced Wikipedia technical users before you publish it for all to use. That is when you contact the Techies at the Village pump. Good Luck! w.carter-Talk 19:12, 13 December 2014 (UTC)

Thanks a lot!

W.carter, vi parolas Esperanton? --Ochilov (talk) 08:02, 16 December 2014 (UTC)
Ochilov: No, not really, but I'm interested in languages and I know some other languages related to Esperanto, and that enables me to understand some of it. And I guess you were out celebrating the Esperanto Day yesterday. :) Really interesting language. Cheers, w.carter-Talk 09:02, 16 December 2014 (UTC)
Yes, I also think so. --Ochilov (talk) 09:07, 16 December 2014 (UTC)

Thanks! :) I need that, I'm going to be working (on the computer, I'm cheating and checking the WP at the same time) most of this night. >yikes< I wish I had just as good a reason as you to avoid all the holiday-hysteria. :-/ I usually celebrate more like this. Hey, thanks for fixing those dabs and formatting that article. I thought about fixing them today, but before I could, you fixed them. Thank you again, have a nice day! Jim Carter 04:45, 20 December 2014 (UTC)

@MariaTudor1DeInglaterra: Hello again. Yes, I saw you previous message. So, a new account again? Let's hope you remember your password for this one. ;) You do know that you don't have to give your real name here, right? Let's hope that this new account can keep you out of trouble. A piece of advice though: Please use English. Not just because the rules says that conversations should be in English, or because you really could use the training, but most of all because if you do that (and demand that other users also use English) then it will be really apparent to everyone if someone is being uncivil to you or you get in trouble in any other way. English = fast help. If you continue with the Spanish, very few people here will be able to follow what's going on and will be unable to intervene. So please take my advice. I created the talk page for you to give you a legitimate welcome. Best, w.carter-Talk 20:07, 20 December 2014 (UTC)
the truth is that when I forgot the password for my user, I almost exploded, but'll keep your advice to use more often the English, but I could say as change my username, it sounds a little effeminate my username, thanks.
@MariaTudor1DeInglaterra: Or you can do as many other users do and keep that username and write another in the "name part" like this: Manuel. You can also fix your signature in your preferences to look like that. But it does not matter if you are male or female here, we are all just "editors" and many actually choose another gender in the username just for the fun confusion. w.carter-Talk 20:20, 20 December 2014 (UTC)
@W.carter:thanks, then I'll do what you told me, incidentally merry christmas friend
And to you too.   w.carter-Talk 21:10, 20 December 2014 (UTC)

On my talk page I responded to your careful admonition

OneClickArchiver new feature!

Hello there W.carter! I'm noticing that you comment out Technical 13's (Original by Equazcion) OneClickArchiver (Original) script when you are not using it. I've added a new feature today that allows you to toggle the script on or off directly from talk pages! The best part is that it will remember what the last state was! Please see the documentation for more details and happy archiving! — {{U|Technical 13}} (etc) 00:36, 29 December 2014 (UTC)

@Technical 13: Hey! It seems to work! :) Great, thanks! And to any talk page stalkers who might have the OneClickArchiver installed and on, just click at the "More" tab and you will find the "on/off" button for the script. Very handy. I even think that EEng will like it. Best, w.carter-Talk 13:01, 29 December 2014 (UTC)
  • Yes, that is where the on/off toggle link is. You can also just use the access key (which works anywhere on the page so you don't have to scroll), Alt+⇧ Shift+O. ;) Happy archiving! — {{U|Technical 13}} (etc) 13:04, 29 December 2014 (UTC)
(And that key feature, dear readers, is for those who still have their memory alive and working. The rest of us absent-minded, forgetful, whimsical, fuddy-duddies are ever so grateful for the excellent tab-button that thoughtful Technical 13 installed.  ) w.carter-Talk 13:13, 29 December 2014 (UTC)
  • All access keys use Alt+⇧ Shift, you just have to remember that "O" is for "One" in "OneClickArchiver". ;) — {{U|Technical 13}} (etc) 13:21, 29 December 2014 (UTC)
"O"-h! ;) w.carter-Talk 13:24, 29 December 2014 (UTC)

Excuse me, but do I have a reputation for being hard to please? EEng (talk) 16:39, 29 December 2014 (UTC)

@EEng: Of course not!! :) I only meant that the new feature was even better than we had hoped for, almost as good as your "two-click" suggestion. Best, w.carter-Talk 17:43, 29 December 2014 (UTC)
The fact is I am hard to please, but I wasn't sure whether people know that. EEng (talk) 18:29, 29 December 2014 (UTC)
  • I think it is better than "two-clicks" because you can toggle it on when you want it, then archive multiple sections with one click and then toggle it back off when you are done.  ;) — {{U|Technical 13}} (etc) 19:04, 29 December 2014 (UTC)

Thank you Jim Carter, that is really kind of you. :) But admin is a no-go for me (see my user page). I always work better a couple pegs below. If I became and admin, I would have to start "behaving myself" and that is not likely to happen anytime soon I'm afraid.   Best, w.carter-Talk 10:45, 29 December 2014 (UTC)

(edit conflict) Ah.. I didn't looked at your userpage until now. I didn't knew there are so many "Carter"s :D Jim Carter 11:01, 29 December 2014 (UTC)

2015

Once more onto the page, dear friends, once more;
Or close the wall up with our references all.
In editing there's nothing so becomes a man
As modest stillness and humility:
But when the blast of Draft: blows in our ears,
Then imitate the action of the tiger;
Stiffen the Wi-Fi, summon up the app,
Disguise fair nature with hard-furrowed brow;
Then lend the eye a terrible aspect;
Let pry through the heading of the section
Like the swift connection; let the fact o'erwhelm it
…….
Follow your spirit, and upon this charge
Cry 'Good for Wiki, Knowledge, and the World!”

Wikipedia feedback modes

Happy New Year, W.carter--the time to identify big opportunities to grab. I'm almost ready to offer a new article on instrumentalism.

I have become aware of 2 sources of feedback. The Teahouse answers questions about how to do things in Wikipedia; it works quickly and efficiently to provide answers. But the Sandbox offers judgments about things editors are proposing--I don't know if it is just markup corrections or more substantive judgments. And it appears to be working badly: I submitted several samples and learned there is a waiting line of thousands and told to be patient for weeks. This strikes me as a serious problem.

Is there someone I could ask if the problem has been recognized and what I could do to help solve it?

Thanks.TBR-qed (talk) 14:53, 1 January 2015 (UTC)

Hello TBR-qed and a Happy New Year to you! The Teahouse is not really for reviewing articles, it is mostly for asking questions and getting advice on how to edit. The only option left is to submit your article for review via your sandbox as you have done. You can of course try to publish your article in the main space without a review, but I would strongly advice against it since it would probably get deleted right away. Better to do it trough the proper channels even if the line is very long. Yes, the long wait is a very serious problem and one that is very recognized. You can talk to any of the more active editors, such as me, and they will tell you the same thing.
As you no doubt are aware, almost all work here is done by volonteers, there is no paid staff for reveiws. There are currently some 23.5 million editors registered users here on the Wikipedia, but only some thousands who have the skill and the time to review new articles and make sure the quality of them is maintained. There is so much an editor needs to know before taking on the task of reviewing articles! I for one am not allowed to do so yet, perhaps in a year or so I will be able to contribute with that. If you want to help, the best thing to do is to be patient. If you really want to help in solving this, I'm afraid that the only way is to keep editing, get to know everything about the Wikipedia, and in 1-2 years maybe help out with reviews yourself. So many new users think that Wikipedia is this great, rich powerful organization that should be able to do everything. Well, it is not. The only "wealth" it has is our combined knowledge and time. Another user Fuhghettaboutit left an answer at the Teahouse some time ago that you might find interesting. I'm quoting it here:
"Google, at number one (according to Alexa [which places Wikipedia at seventh]) has 55,030 employees (according to its 2014 Financial Tables) and budgeted $569 million just for ads and had revenue of almost $7 billion. Twitter, at ninth, has about 3,600 according to their about page. Wikipedia has 241 by my count, only some of which are in the technology end, and which includes 20 fellowships, i.e., not full time and full salaried employees, and a budget of just over $50 million, which is equal to its revenue since its a not-for-profit company. If you want to volunteer and try to design something better, see mw:How to contribute."
I hope that this brings some more light on things for you. All the best, w.carter-Talk 15:34, 1 January 2015 (UTC)
