Userpage
editHello! I saw your question about signatures at the Teahouse (great user name btw! ^^) and I thought you might want to know about how to fix your user page next, so here's a little guide for you:
For making your user page look nice, see: Wikipedia:User page design center. You can also "clone/borrow/steal" the code from someone else's user page. Just ensure that you change it enough that it does not look like you are trying to impersonate the other user. Wikipedia:User pages is a good guide as to what kind of things are appropriate in user space. And when you use the work someone else has created, in the edit summary please attribute the work to them by naming the user you copied the content from. If you want to add userboxes you can start here: Wikipedia:Userboxes. There are also many, many customized userboxes floating around on user pages in the Wikipedia, if you find one you fancy just copy the code from the page. If you are further interested in defining yourself and your style there is also the Wikipedia fauna. All the best, w.carter-Talk 00:43, 19 November 2014 (UTC)
How to alert other editors
editWhen someone is posting on your talk page you get an automatic notification. That notification is a red square followed by a long yellow box (for most browsers and settings). In all other cases you have to alert the other editor in some way, either by "ping" or by mentioning them in a link. This will result in a just the red box notification on that users pages. So even if you respond on your talk page you still have to alert the editor you are addressing. If you want to get hold of me you write {{ping|W.carter}} resulting in @W.carter: or [[User:W.carter|W.carter]] resulting in W.carter and sign with the four "squiggles" ~~~~ at the end and hit "Save". There are some more, but these are the basics. And when you ask something on someone's talk page, you also create a new section so your question don't get entangled in some other conversation. If you are having a conversation with another user on some page, it is also customary to add that page to your Watchlist in case someone in the discussion forgets to alert.
The policy is to leave an answer on the same page as the question, keep the conversation intact unless there is some reason for moving it elsewhere. Like complicated questions at the Teahouse can be continued on the appropriate talk page. w.carter-Talk 08:21, 20 November 2014 (UTC)
Your experience with Wikipedia so far
editWelcome to Wikipedia! I am conducting a quick survey about newcomer support and I would like to hear about your experience so far. Your response will go a long way to help us build a better experience for newcomers like yourself. The survey will take you around 10 minutes to complete.

your page has been patrolled by...
edit@W.carter: I noticed a few times that the message similar to "your page was patrolled by *insert user name here*" how does something like that happen and why would a training page for editing Wikipedia be patrolled for less than 24 hours if I have them on my page?Needs2learnmore(talk) 11:47, 27 January 2015 (UTC)
- Hello! That is nothing to worry about. :) Everything that happens on the Wikipedia is actually visible to everyone if you just know where to look. Every time a new page is created, this is registered in the Recent changes flow. You can see the latest things if you click on "Recent changes" under "Interaction" in the left-hand column on this page. At the same time a small text appears on the page, not visible to the creator of the page, saying "Mark this page as patrolled". This means that an experienced editor can check that the page is ok and then click on the "Mark..." just to indicate that there is nothing "bad" on that page and that it is created for the right reason. Since this is a community where anyone can join, people also try to misuse it in all sorts of ways. Kids use training pages for chatting, companies tries to get more hits on their website by putting ads on training pages just to be visible on the Wikipedia and so on. This is why some editors spend a part of their time here just checking things and "patrolling" pages. You can read more about it here: Wikipedia:New pages patrol. - Read all instructions at Files For Upload, which will tell you how to submit a file upload request, since you currently are not an autoconfirmed user. Be sure to provide a link to the file and the requested information on its license (fair-use, CCL, public domain, etc.). RegistryKey(RegEdit) 03:11, 30 January 2015 (UTC)
