Holiday greetings (2021)

Victor,
I sincerely hope your holiday season goes well this year especially with what we went through last year. I'm optimistic that 2022 will be a better year for all of us: both in real life and on Wikipedia. Wishing you the best from, Interstellarity (talk) 18:59, 21 December 2021 (UTC)

New Page - Sean Bush

Hi Victor,

Thanks for the update on the images and for providing the information on obtaining permission. I will send an email to Dr. Bush asking for permission to use the image. I will send him a link to the page so he can see what I am putting together. I noticed that the other image from Venom ER was taken down. Does that qualify even though it's in the series and is in the public domain? Or does it come down to needing to obtain permission? I reviewed the Non-free content criteria and it seems to qualify.

Thanks, Nicole Beansalad3 (talk) 16:16, 31 December 2021 (UTC)

@Beansalad3: Hello Nicole, I am afriad I couldn't determine which image you're talking about. File:Dr Sean Bush examines a California kingsnake.jpg and File:Dr Sean Bush examines a snakebite victim.jpg both still exist (though they are up for deletion through two different procceses). Please be aware that "Public Domain" has a very specfic meaning when it comes to copyright that is described at Wikipedia:Public domain. I couldn't find any evidence that the latter is public domain (its a BBC program, after all) and for the former I am missing the concrete image source. Victor Schmidt (talk) 16:33, 31 December 2021 (UTC)
Happy New Year.
OK thanks Victor. I'm crafting an email to Dr. Bush and will ask for permission for both images and any others he can lawfully contribute. If I am able to obtain permission will editing be restored? I'd like to cite better references in those other sections to keep improving the page. And Happy New Year as well! Beansalad3 (talk) 16:39, 31 December 2021 (UTC)
@Beansalad3: Draft acceptance does not depend on wether the draft has images. Its perfectly acceptable for a draft to go without images into mainspace. The key are the sources used to write the text. There is no need to hurry with image permissions: Almost anything on Wikipedia can be easely reversed. Should permission only arrive after the images where deleted, we can undelete them at that time. Victor Schmidt (talk) 16:44, 31 December 2021 (UTC)
Please see the talkpage guidelines, generally, you respond to someone by leaving your reply on a new line, using one more : than the person before you
Hi Victor, I hope I am doing this correctly, and thanks for the tip. While I'm waiting for Dr. Bush's response I noticed a mistake on the page that I'd like to correct. I referenced his son, Jude, as a 'her'. Under the Snakebite Incident section - While filming Venom ER, Bush’s son Jude, age 2, was bit by a baby rattlesnake while playing with a neighbor in her backyard. I'd like to change this to 'his'. Would you be able to correct that pronoun for me? Much appreciated. If there is not a rush to get permission for the images how do I go about getting my editing capabilities back to improve the page? Thanks. Beansalad3 (talk) 18:17, 31 December 2021 (UTC)
@Beansalad3: Done. Note that you can generally edit any article that isn't protected, just be bold. The only time this is not permitted is when you have a conflict of interest with the article subject, but you're welcome to submit edit requests in that case. Features for new users coming soon (and mentors, like you, wanted!)

Hello. Although for some reason you aren't signed up as a host at the Teahouse, I recognise you've made a lot of number of contributions there over the years. So I wanted to make sure you're aware of the imminent rollout of new Growth Team Features which every new account will be getting by default. Each users will soon see a new 'Homepage' tab next to their User page. It contains two main elements which might impact on your involvement - and you'd be welcome to get involved and help out directly with one of them.

  • Firstly, they will be offered a range of 'suggested edits', and encouraged to make simple improvements to pages that interest them. (Being aware of this feature would be helpful for all Teahouse hosts and other helpers if you're likely to offer advice on tasks for them to start out doing.)
  • There's also a 'Your impact' box to show them how many people have seen the pages they've just edited.
  • Finally, each new user is randomly assigned a 'mentor' from a list of friendly, experienced editors, like yourself. If they get stuck, they can ask a question directly to them via a Your mentor box, and hopefully get a swift, friendly answer from that mentor. Currently, this feature is given to 2% of new users, but it's set to increase to around 10% in the very near future.

To spread the load on our current list of around 65 mentors, I'm reaching out to ask if you'd like to help out and sign up as one? The workload is relatively small; User Panini! reports receiving four questions a month, on average, all of which were simple ones of the type we already get at the Teahouse, whilst I've had just one in the last 3 weeks. To view a list of every question asked of all mentors over the last 14 days, click here.

If becoming a mentor and being available to help new users on their first few days here interests you - just as have done at the Teahouse in the past - then please consider signing up at Growth Team features/Mentor list. But please only do so if you are genuinely willing to be available to help. Existing users can already 'opt-in' to seeing the Newcomer Homepage features via their Preferences.

Thank you! Nick Moyes (talk) 17:30, 25 February 2022 (UTC)

I'm sorry I don't feel comfortable becoming a mentor for new users at this time. While my activity has been fairly high in the last few weeks, I can already estimate that there will be a time in the near future where I have to get inactive for longer periods again. And having an inactive mentor is IMO the last thing needed. Victor Schmidt (talk) 18:06, 25 February 2022 (UTC)
That's absolutely fine. Nobody is under any obligation to do anything here. Best of luck in all you do. Nick Moyes (talk) 22:52, 25 February 2022 (UTC)

Sean Bush Images

Hi Victor,

I realized I tried chatting on an archived page so starting a new thread. A few months ago I created a page for Dr Sean Bush but the images were not approved. I have since reached out to Dr. Bush and explained what I was doing and he kindly submitted photos in which he owned and had taken himself. He sent them to wiki-commons along with his approval and me on the thread. I'd like to add those images to his page but want to make sure they are good to go on the backend. Is there a place to go where you can see if those images are approved and won't be taken down if I add them?

Thanks, Nicole Beansalad3 (talk) 20:31, 1 March 2022 (UTC)

@Beansalad3: When in doubt about wether an image permission has gone through, you can check the file description page or ask at the VRT noticeboard. File description pages should have this template embed (don't add it yourself, it won't make the permission valid). As far as it seems right now, there seems to be some sort of problem I can't tell exactly because I don't have VRT access. Dr. Bush should check his mailbox, the VRT people will likely have sent a response. Victor Schmidt (talk) 21:32, 1 March 2022 (UTC)

Thanks Victor, I will check with the noticeboard. There was some back and forth on asking if he was the owner of the images and how and Dr. Bush did respond. I'll check on next steps. ' — Preceding unsigned comment added by Beansalad3 (talkcontribs) 16:43, 2 March 2022 (UTC)

Hello. Regarding the recent revert you made to Bangor Grammar School: you may already know about them, but you might find Wikipedia:Template index/User talk namespace useful. After a revert, these can be placed on the user's talk page to let them know you considered their edit inappropriate, and also direct new users towards the sandbox. They can also be used to give a stern warning to a vandal when they've been previously warned. Try warning both vandals next time when reverting edits made by 2 vandals. But good job reporting the first! InterstateFive (talk) - just another roadgeek 15:58, 10 March 2022 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of Shree Rapaka

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Shree Rapaka requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a real person or group of people that does not credibly indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please read more about what is generally accepted as notable.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator. Myna50 (talk) 13:43, 16 March 2022 (UTC)

@Myna50: I decided to draftify this a couple seconds before your csd nomination. Victor Schmidt (talk) 13:44, 16 March 2022 (UTC)

Addition

I would like to add few more details:

Schreiberbike has accused me of unconstructive edits and vandalism.

He also called me a jerk and further on, accused me of spreading some kind of religion???

Then, LaundryPizza03 accused me of attacking Schreiberbike on his talk page, although I have addressed the issue on his Talk Page where I have the full right to do:

"All content and conduct issues should be discussed first at the talk page of the relevant article or user before requesting dispute resolution."

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Dispute_resolution_requests/ANI

And the last, Arthur Douglas Weller III, an admin here, didn't sent me any article nor link about the Special Policy meaning he flatly banned me. Emirthesenat (talk) 08:48, 31 July 2022 (UTC)

Todd Hendricks

Hi Victor, I need someone to do the refill documentation on a page. The page is in English-Todd Hendricks. I have tried and I am having trouble with it. Also I need help to in making the page available in German Wikipedia. Thank you much 2600:6C46:537F:ECB2:75BF:A70F:3CEC:94D7 (talk) 20:24, 5 August 2022 (UTC)

refill isn't actually very complicated. Page name simply refers to the name of the page, in this case Todd Hendricks. The rest of the fields are usally prefilled and indicate which of the over 200 projects of the Wikimedia Foundation that this tool supports should be used. One thing to know though, is that refill sometimes makes a few errors or is unable to retrieve titles for a few things, which has to be manually corrected afterwards. Getting the article up in the german Wikipedia as well is complicated, but possible. I see that de:Todd Hendricks was already speedy deleted once, and if I remember correctly the reason was equivalent to what speedy deletion criterion A3 is here at the english Wikipedia. What I would suggest is that you ask at de:WP:IMP to have the english Wikipedia revision history imported to, lets say, de:Benutzer:Artikelstube/Todd Hendricks, in the User namespace over at de:. The page can later be moved to its final location once the translation is done. If you're TJH2020, please log in, to avoid any WP:LOUTSOCK issiues as well as making communication easier ( I cannot ping IP's, and some IPs and in particular IPv6's are inherently dynamic). Victor Schmidt (talk) 06:07, 6 August 2022 (UTC)
I will try to refill but still having trouble with it?? I also added another source that covers some things in the article. The German version had no text when the German Wiki got it? I will try what you suggested. Thank you for the help. Much appreciated. TJH2020 (talk) 18:02, 6 August 2022 (UTC)

Nathan Vandergunst moved to draftspace

An article you recently created, Nathan Vandergunst, is not suitable as written to remain published. It needs more citations from reliable, independent sources. (?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. When you feel the article meets Wikipedia's general notability guideline and thus is ready for mainspace, please click on the "Submit your draft for review!" button at the top of the page. Pushpin maps

Hi. I'm sorry - I forgot to thank you for your reply to my questions about pushpin maps. I gave up in the end - I had a look at Module:Location map/data/Indonesia, but it's "written in the the Lua programming language", which I don't know, and as I understand it, no module means no pushpin maps. I've just added the map I wanted lower down in the article. By the way Template:Location map doesn't mention pushpins at all :-) Regards Davidelit (Talk) 12:38, 9 August 2023 (UTC)

Create a new sandbox

Mr. Victor Schmidt,

Greetings from Valliappan. I have contributed couple of articles earlier to Wikipedia. After a long gap I have forgotten how to create a new sandbox where I want to work on my new article and later move the page live. You have earlier helped to move article from sandbox. When I click on my sandbox I find redirect of earlier article.

I would appreciate if you could help me to create a new sandbox. Thanks for your time.

Error while moving article from Sandbox

Mr. Victor Schmidt,

Greetings from Valliappan.

I just move an article Ünichiral from my sandbox. Immediately the following message popped up.

"This sandbox is in the article namespace. Either move this page into your userspace, or remove the {{User sandbox}} template".

I couldn't set it right. I would appreciate if you could help me to resolve this. Thanks fõr your time.

Best regards, Valliappan Kannappan (talk) 14:08, 4 December 2023 (UTC)

@Valliappan Kannappan: I see Intrisit has taken care of it, though I must agree with Bensci54 and DMacks that its nowhere near ready for mainspace; for example, the "Introducing 'Unichiral’: a new term"-section has one source pretty early into it; and I don't get why you would need 12 (!) sources to verify one statement unless (I haven't checked) it's a WP:SYNTH fail. Victor Schmidt (talk) 12:10, 8 December 2023 (UTC)
Mr. Victor Schmidt,
Greetings from Valliappan.
Thank you for mentioning me in the discussion regarding the article's status. I appreciate the time you've taken to review the content and the constructive feedback provided. I understand that the article is not yet ready for the mainspace, and I am committed to making the necessary improvements. I shall start working on the Draft article "Ünichiral".
To ensure that the article meets Wikipedia's quality standards, I would welcome any specific suggestions or guidelines that you or others may have. Could you please elaborate on the areas that require the most attention? This will help me prioritize my efforts effectively.
Additionally, if there are any resources or examples of similar articles that have successfully made it to the mainspace, I would be grateful if you could point me towards them.
I look forward to collaborating further and enhancing the article's readiness for its eventual inclusion in Wikipedia's mainspace.
Best regards, Valliappan Kannappan (talk) Valliappan Kannappan (talk) 07:21, 9 December 2023 (UTC)
@Valliappan Kannappan: Well, for starters I would focus on getting the "Introducing 'Unichiral’: a new term"-section properly sourced, and assessing wether the statement with 12 sources is a WP:SYNTH fail (in which case it must be removed or sourced to some other reliable source) or not (in which case the strongest 1-2, perhaps 3 sources should be enough). as noted in unpublished observations by J. Gal from the same section is editorializing and smells like an WP:OR fail.
Having said that, I am convinced that you will need to do at least one pass over the entire draft to ensure it doesn't suffer from the same problems. As for guidelines, in addition to the above referenced, the rest of MOS:WTW (of which MOS:OP-ED is a part) might be usefull; and while this isn't your first article cross-checking with WP:YFA might also be an idea.
I do not have an example of a similar mainspace article at hand becauseI'd need to know your definition of "similar", and, more important, that generally is a poor argument; try looking in Wikipedia:Good articles/Natural sciences#Chemistry and materials science or Wikipedia:Featured articles#Chemistry and mineralogy wether something fits. Courtesy Ping @DMacks and Bensci54: so they can add something if they like. Hope this helps, Victor Schmidt (talk) 10:20, 9 December 2023 (UTC)

Draft: Art Venegas

I dont understand why 18 citations coming from sources like the LA Times, YouTube interviews, Track and Field News, and major college Athletic website profiles are not considered to be reliable sources. And how can 18 citations be too few to meet the number requirement? OLYMPICHAMMER (talk) 03:24, 20 January 2024 (UTC)

@OLYMPICHAMMER: Ad Orientem has already covered the reliability of the sources over at User talk:Ad Orientem/Archive 25#Draft: Art Venegas; I agree with their analysis. The decline message "This submission is not adequately supported by reliable sources. Reliable sources are required so that information can be verified. If you need help with referencing, please see Referencing for beginners and Citing sources." is overloaded. It can be that there are generally too few sources, but it can also be that there are non-reliable sources used where a reliable source would be required. There is no fixed number of reliable sources required to verify articles (though not having multiple ones is a problem too, albeit in a slightly different way), it depends on how many are needed to support everything in the article that Wikipedia policies mandate a reliable source for. Victor Schmidt (talk) 06:43, 20 January 2024 (UTC)
Are you guys able to go in and look at the current version of our draft? I have adhered to Ad Orientem's guidelines, and have omitted sources that dont cut it. I am interested in your opionions, if you are willing to look at it again in its current form OLYMPICHAMMER (talk) 07:09, 20 January 2024 (UTC)
Thank you for that encouragement Victor. Please see my latest comments, I am doing everything necessary to meet the standard. Please review the current state of the draft, if you are willing OLYMPICHAMMER (talk) 07:14, 20 January 2024 (UTC)
You need to cite sources properly, see WP:REFB. You need to remove all the promotional content, like "Venegas enjoys a reputation as a raconteur." Those are the biggest issues, there are others. Maproom (talk) 08:27, 20 January 2024 (UTC)

Courtesy pings: @Maproom and Ad Orientem:. I see you have mostly converted refs to use Wikipedia's inline citation format, but there are still two artifacts in the lead section. We do not cite search engines as their results are ever-changing, highly dynamic, and more often than not personalised. Jessica Cosby (Number 17 under legacy) needs a different source IMO, right now all the source confirms is that there is a coach by that name in this sports field. All the uclabruins.com-URL's need better titles. Victor Schmidt (talk) 07:23, 21 January 2024 (UTC)
@OLYMPICHAMMER There are still several issues so I have pinged an editor to the draft who specializes in sports topics to see if they are interested in cleaning up the draft. It may take some time for them to respond so be patient. S0091 (talk) 15:25, 21 January 2024 (UTC)
Victor, I dont understand your comments-what search engine did I cite? OLYMPICHAMMER (talk) 20:05, 21 January 2024 (UTC)
@OLYMPICHAMMER you had cited Google search results but I removed it. There are better sources available, many of which are listed in the Further reading section rather than cited directly in the draft (i.e. LA Times). I have done some cleanup on the draft and cited a couple LA Times articles that were listed in the Fr section along with finding a couple others which I have cited but more work is needed. To be clear Venegas is notable under Wikipedia's definition so warrants an article. The main issues right now are the overuse of primary sources (those affiliated with Venegas, such as UCLA, when better sources are available), verifiability (sources explicitly support the content, preferably with secondary, independent sources) and neutral point of view which are core policies. As I stated above, I (S0091) have pinged an editor who specializes in sports topics to help cleanup it up so meets Wikipedia's encyclopedic standards. They said they will take "at some point soon" so will see. We are all volunteers and there is no deadline. What I suggest at this point is sitting back and give that editor a couple weeks or so.
