Your msg. on my talkpage

Honestly, I fail to see where I come in as an admin here - because none of my admin privileges are related to giving a judgement on what the article content should be. Not only me, no other admin should also be claiming authority over article content. However, as an experienced editor, I can step in, and I will step in ;), and give my baarah aana (Indianised version of two cents). this isn't an issue to fight over. Just say that it has all the qualifications for being adjudged as a Metropolitan area but that the Government of India has recognised only four metros. If not in the main text, have it as a foot note. Matter over!! --Gurubrahma 14:01, 6 March 2006 (UTC)

I don't understand how Bangalore is in but Hyderabad is out - IIRC, some years back, there was a proposal to make these two metros - i think it is still stuck. Please check for an official source proclaiming Bangalore to be a metro. If you find one, it wd most probly say the same abt Hyderabad as well. My own guess is that both of them are not metros yet or both of them are, but not one a metro and another a non-metro. --Gurubrahma 15:37, 6 March 2006 (UTC)

Hyderabad Institutions list

List of institutions based in Hyderabad India and Education in Hyderabad, India could be merged into one single list. Maybe Academic Research and Education Institutions in Hyderabad??

--hydkat 11:33, 7 March 2006 (UTC)

There's a category for education?? Then why are we maintaining a seperate list :(((. I'm beginning to hate these lists.
I suggest we move them all to a new category called research institutions. (these are research institutions but not educational onces.) and submit both these list pages for deletion.

--hydkat(talk)15:26, 7 March 2006 (UTC)

Kerala is on the main page!

Thats one more India related article up there...

--hydkat 05:29, 9 March 2006 (UTC)

about South India yes it could... how does go about requesting a featured articled status though?
--hydkat 06:14, 9 March 2006 (UTC)
good luck. :) --hydkat 06:28, 9 March 2006 (UTC)
well... as gurubrama said added my 'barah anna'. --hydkat 07:12, 9 March 2006 (UTC)
:( give me some time to reply to this.... --hydkat 12:53, 9 March 2006 (UTC)
Hi, The only thing I can suggest is reduce the economy section to 4 paragraph with no breakup of states. If you notice the economy section has images that has nothing to do with...economy. Dubious copyrighted images can be taken care of... with some effort. Each section should have no more than 2 images, this seems to have become a standard practice for wikipedia articles. A history section needs to be added (which in itself has to be a summary because the history of this region is huge.) Finally don't lose heart! Even if it gets thrown out, it will end up becoming a better article AND we can always resubmit when these guys are a little more forgiving :) (did you see the other nominations?)
rgds, --hydkat 06:51, 10 March 2006 (UTC)
What about puting it up on INCOTW? ask all to help bring it to FA standard? --hydkat 06:55, 10 March 2006 (UTC)

Kannur

I have been contributing editorial content to Kannur for quite some time but I find that it has not reached FA status tiill now , partly because there are several guys who keep fiddling with the article . Can you get it to FA status sumal 15:10, 9 March 2006 (UTC)

Kerala Wikipedians

Hai Deepu, Nice work at Portal:Kerala. Actually there is a Kerala user template existing already {{User Kerala}} and I had it on my user page until few days back when i removed all the user boxes. Anyway I will add myself to the category manually. thanks --Raghu 15:49, 9 March 2006 (UTC)

P T Usha

Hai again, I saw that you have moved the contents of PT Usha to Pilavullakandi Thekkeparambil Usha using cut and paste instead of using the move function. The problem with cut and paste move is that the history of who editted the article before is lost and is discouraged in Wikipedia. Now that you have already created the destination article, you can't move original article to the destination article yourself. An administrator can only do that. You can get admin help by directly contacting someone or by requesting at Wikipedia:Requested moves. I hope I didn't confuse you. regards --Raghu 16:20, 9 March 2006 (UTC)

You have truncated the history of |Kochi

You have removed the following: "The history of Kochi(Chinese 柯枝) dated back to early 15th century. During the Yong Le era of Ming Dynasty, Admiral Zheng He and his treasure fleet visited Kochi. Their visits were documented by on board Arab language translators Ma Huan,Fei Xin and Gong Zheng, each one of them published a book documented their visits to variou countries, including Kochi.(There is an English translation of Ma Huan’s book Ying yai sheng lan (The Overall survey of the ocean shores).

  • The name of the king of Kochi was Koyili,he was a buddhist.
  • The main product of Kochi was pepper. The rich merchants or chetti of Kochi, collected pepper from local farmers and exchange them with arab merchants for pearls, coral and spice, then in turn wait for the arrival of Zheng He's fleet to trade for porcelain and silk.
  • In 1405 King Koyili sent envoy Vanjatar(完者塔儿)to pay tribute to Emperor Zhu Di of Ming Empire.
  • In 1412 King Koyili sent envoy to Ming Court a second time, requested a formal Imperial instituion of a mountain in Kochi.
  • In 1416 Emperor Zhu Di formally instituted king Koyili as "King of Kochi". The Emperor also instituted a mountain in Kochi as National Guardian Mountain (镇国山), with institution poem (in 16 stanzas, 64 Chinese characters )written by Emperor Zhu Di himself inscribed on a stone tablet as Imperial present."

Please go to Talk:Kochi, India and give your reason.

South India FAC

Hi, I noticed that you took down the FAC tag from the article. Please push South India now for a Peer Review so that points raised during the discussion can be incorporated into the article. Thanks AreJay 18:52, 10 March 2006 (UTC)

Hi, just placed South India in INCOTW. Correct/Add to the comment section if you wish.
What about the suggestion of putting it up for a second peer review? (errm... how do you do that?)
rgds, --hydkat 11:47, 11 March 2006 (UTC)
Well I did guess...correctly I might add. I did think it would be good to tell users about all the critical comments about it in its FAC page, so that they get an understanding of whats needed to be done. Thus my main original comment line. --hydkat 13:34, 11 March 2006 (UTC)

Marine Drive

From Wikipedia:Disambiguation the conflict that occurs when a term is closely associated with two or more different topics. In many cases, this word or phrase is the "natural" title of more than one article. We don't always have to use a disambiguation page if two articles share the same name. See cricket for instance.

According to Google search: "Marine Drive" (Bombay AND Mumbai) yields 134,000 results. While [1] results in 28,400 results.

The Marine Drive of Mumbai is internationally famous, and has been known for decades, while the Kochi one appears to be fairly new from the information on the page (I could be mistaken). So by the google search & historically, the Mumbai article has a more natural claim to the title. Regards, =Nichalp «Talk»= 15:53, 11 March 2006 (UTC)

Googlefight: I know, that's why I did not comment on the North American places, and focused on the fame and history of the name. =Nichalp «Talk»= 05:15, 13 March 2006 (UTC)

Reverts, additions, and everyones opinions on Hyderabad, India page

Am I crazy? I think so.... I keep reverting people adding stuff to the Hyderabad, India page... and the more they seem to add. And now, one of the major contributors has gone and reverted the page to its previous avatar.. (check out the page...) In the mean time I have a problem with the Romila Thapar page which keeps getting reverted to a POV and I'm accused of being a pseudo-secularist. I'm crazy... if not, I'm going to be.

Revert your changes from Assam to Assom

Hello, please revert the changes you have made from Assam to Assom. First, the new proposed spelling is Asom and not Assom. Second, it is just a proposal as of today. Third, the final spelling could end up being different from Asom. Chaipau 20:39, 13 March 2006 (UTC)

Newspapers in Assam have made the change, but newspapers elsewhere have not. The Assam government websites still sports the old spelling [2], [3]. Changing the name effectively will take longer, because at some point the union government will have to issue notifications. Chaipau 12:23, 14 March 2006 (UTC)

Also Happy Holi.

FYI I am pasting a screenshot of ML WIKI Main Page in Firefox.

Dear Deepu,

Even I use firefox to edit Wiki, both English and Malayalam. I doubt the problem might be with the unicode font you are using. Have you gone through the Welcome Page. That is presented in English. Please make a try. If nothing works out you can better talk to User:Peringz an admin in ml.wiki. He will give you more guidance. :- Manjithkaini 14:37, 14 March 2006 (UTC)

Hello Deepu, Manjith is using malayalam unicode font AnjaliOldLipi. Get this font and set Firefox to use it as default font to display Malayalam and Other Languages [from Tools menu > Options item > Content tab > Fonts & Colors section > Advanced button > Select "Malayalam" and set Anjali as font for serif/san-serif/monospace, do the same for Other Languages also.] - Peringz 16:22, 14 March 2006 (UTC)

Deepu, Please do the following also - From Windows Control Panel > Regional and Language Options > select Languages tab > under Supplemental Language Support section > check Install Files for Complex script... > click OK > insert Windows XP installation CD when prompted - Peringz 11:23, 15 March 2006 (UTC)

Esperanza Newsletter, Issue #1

Reach out is a program aimed at allowing users to bring issues that they have had in Wikipedia to a listening, sympathetic and caring audience:
"No one can know how we feel if we do not say. We cannot expect to get understanding if we do not ask for it. No one will dispute that sometimes life's issues are too much for one person. It is fair to say that sometimes Wikipedia's problems fall under the same heading. This is a place where you can bring the bruises that can sometimes be got on this project for attention."
The Stress alerts program aims at identifying users who are stressed, alerting the community of thier stress and works in tandem with the Stressbusters at trying to identify causes of stress and eliminating them.
Note from the editor
Welcome to this new format of the Esperanza Newsletter, which came about during the last Advisory Council meeting - we hope you like it! The major changes are that each month, right after the Council meeting, this will be sent out and will include two featured programs and a sum up of the meeting. Also, it will be signed by all of the Advisory Council members, not just Celestianpower. Have an Esperanzial end of March, everyone!
  1. Future meetings are to be held monthly, not fortnightly as before.
  2. Bans and Access level changes (apart from autovoice) in the IRC channel are to be reported at the new log.
  3. In the IRC channel, there is going to be only one bot at a time.
  4. The charter requires members to have 150 edits and 2 weeks editing. Why this is the case will be clarified.
  5. A new Code of Conduct will be drafted by JoanneB and proposed to the Esperanza community.
  6. The NPA reform idea is to be dropped officially.
  7. Charter ammendments are to be discussed in future, not voted on.
  8. The Advisory Council is not going to be proposed to be expanded by the Advisory Council themselves, if others want to propose it, they will listen.
Signed...

Esperanza Newsletter #2

The Barnstar Brigade is a new program aimed at giving more very deserving yet unappreciated users barnstars. It will officially start on 2006-04-09, but signing up is encouraged before this date:
"Here in Wikipedia, there are hundreds of wikipedians whose work and efforts go un-appreciated. One occasionally comes across editors who have thousands of good edits, but because they may not get around as much as others, their contributions and hard work often go un-noticed. Sadly, these editors often leave the project. As Esperanzians, we can help to make people feel appreciated, be it by some kind words or the awarding of a Barnstar. A project the size of Wikipedia has thousands of editors, so there are plenty of people out there who deserve recognition, one just has to find them. The object of this program is not to flood editors with Barnstars, but to seek out people who deserve them, and make them feel appreciated."
The Stress alerts program aims at identifying users who are stressed, alerting the community of thier stress and works in tandem with the Stressbusters at trying to identify causes of stress and eliminating them.
Information
Welcome to the second issue of the new format Esperanza Newsletter - we hope you still like it! This week, it was delivered diligently by our new dogsbody. MiszaBot (run by Misza13): any execution complaints should go to him. Content comments should be directed at the Esperanza talkpage. Thanks!
  1. The next elections: Approval voting as before and, also as before, an previous leadership member can run. Please submit your name for voting in the relevant section of this page. Voting starts on 2006-04-23 and ends on 2006-04-30. There will be three places up for grabs as KnowledgeOfSelf is leaving Wikipedia. Please see the previously linked page for full details.
  2. The Code of Conduct is now ready for extensive discussion! Specific comments should go to the Code of Conduct talk page, discussion of having one at all should be directed to the main Esperanza talk page.
  3. The current process for accepting proposals for new programs has been deemed fine. All Advisory Council members and the Admin Gen are to endevour to be bold when viewing discussion. If they feel that consensus has been reached, they will act accordingly.
A plea from the editor...
The propsed programs page is terribly underused! Please leave any comments, good or bad, on the page, to help us determine the membership's thoughts on the ideas there.
Signed...

Regarding Template:Major_Cities_of_India

How did you select the criteria to define "The major cities of India"? How are you going to implement the template in the respective articles? --Andy123(talk) 10:49, 11 April 2006 (UTC)

They might be important cities, but can they be classified into major cities? What is the criterion of giving them the "major" tag? Which part of the demographics? Area size? Population? --Andy123(talk) 13:09, 11 April 2006 (UTC)

Yeah, I goofed up. I had thought that the metropolitan cities template had been deleted. I think the major cities template is redundant as there is no specific criteria to include them in the list unlike the metropolitan cities. Regards, =Nichalp «Talk»= 16:44, 11 April 2006 (UTC)

Request for edit summary

When editing an article on Wikipedia there is a small field labelled "Edit summary" under the main edit-box. It looks like this:

When you leave the edit summary blank, some of your edits could be mistaken for vandalism and may be reverted, so please always briefly summarize your edits, especially when you are making subtle but important changes, like changing dates or numbers. Thank you.

Trivandrum and Kochi

Deepu, Let us stop un necessary fight. Any how we shall discuss later on. Pls feel free to call me at : 9847158115 or pl add me in yahoo : jaleelmalik. We shall chat in person and solve the confusion. Areawise, the City Corporations of TVM,TSR, KCH, KLM & KNR can be arranged in the descending order.

Wrt population as per the latest Census (2001), the cities can be arranged in the descending order as follows:

TVM, KCH, KLM, KNR & TSR.

But when we consider the population of the Urban Agglomeration, KCH stands first (since the Municipalities including Tripunithura, Kalammaseery, Aluva, Angamali, Perumbavoor & Parur and the Panchayats in between are also inlcuded as part of the U/A of Cochin. In the case of TVM, the Municiplalities like NTA, NDD, ATL and VKL are not at all included in the U/A. Once this happens, TVM wud become the largest U/A in Kerala. Please understand the situation and stop unwanted discussions. If some one from Kochyy are trying to make unnecessary adverse comments against TVM, we shall be forced to make a much more vigorous and rigorous fight. It is better we stop our fight here. regards Jaleel —Preceding unsigned comment added by Jaleelmalik (talkcontribs)

Deepu , Dont create unnecessary problems .Its pretty clear that Trivandrum is the largest corporation in Kerala , and if u consider TCR(Trivandrum Capital Region) ,its still bigger than Kochi UA. --Altruist 11:51, 21 April 2006 (UTC)
Hey Deepu , no harsh feelings .Just pointing out some facts .Can u just give any link which shows Kochi corporation is the biggest in Kerala? --Altruist 12:10, 21 April 2006 (UTC)

Hello Deepu, This issue is getting serious. Why did u revert the links Ajay had put? That was regarding International school in Trivandrum (I supppose you know that is the only such school in Kerala). Also i saw someone write narrow winding roads in Trivandrum .how do u justify that ? .Have u ever seen Trivandrum roads .They are the best in Kerala. I'm not here for a fight but I hope I get a reasnable justification for what u did. Also the biggest Corporation is Trivandrum and Kochi second. If u look at U/A Kochi is put as bigger city because they havent included any surrounding municiplaities to Trivandrum U/A . There is nothing wrong in writing Trivandrum as the largest Corporation . Expecting a honest reply from you. --Altruist 12:21, 23 April 2006 (UTC)

Ok the population details may be debatable , but deleting other facts was inappropriate. It wasnt Khoikhoi , but u who made those changes. Hope u get my point . If u find anything wrong in those details you can contact me .I can provide the necesary details (as in the point made about roads and so on)--Altruist 15:09, 23 April 2006 (UTC)

Kingdom of Cochin

You asked whether Kingdom of Cochin should be titled "Kingdom of Kochi." Although the city of Cochin was recently re-spelled as Kochi (presumably a mangled transliteration of the Malayalam), this is not (yet) retro-active to historical polities such as the Kingdom of Cochin which is still referred to as such (or simply as Cochin) in most English-language references. Similarly historical Czechia is still called Bohemia. AjaxSmack 04:50, 23 April 2006 (UTC)
