Forever Changes edit

I've just noticed how poor and thin the article on the album is. Entire books, and countless articles, have been written about it - one of the all-time great albums. I'd be willing to start making some improvements to the article - what do you think about joining in an improvement drive? Ghmyrtle (talk) 10:21, 31 May 2016 (UTC)Reply

Ghmyrtle I would be happy to help in any way I can. I have a book or two I can dig up that should lead to some more details (just gotta find them!). I could work on some of the background history and perhaps find more in-depth reviews for its reception section. Let me know how you want to divide the work and I can adjust to that. Thank you for including me in the project.TheGracefulSlick (talk) 16:36, 31 May 2016 (UTC)Reply
The best way to start it, I think, would be simply for each of us to use whatever sources we have and gradually piece a better article together. We could use a sandbox, or simply work on the article as it stands now - I don't have a strong view on how best to do it. So long as we know we are both working to the same end and can discuss anything that arises, I don't think there should be a problem. I have a couple of books, and of course we can find good online sources. I'm not promising to start it straight away, but I'll see if I get something going in the next week or two. Ghmyrtle (talk) 17:05, 31 May 2016 (UTC)Reply
Ghmyrtle ok I got it. I need to finish an article to have space in my sandbox, so it will be a day or two before I start any editing. When that is complete, I'll focus on a little pre-history: mention the release of Da Capo, the state of the band, and Arthur Lee's relationship with his bandmates. If I recall correctly, the group was rapidly deteriorating at the time recording sessions began so it should be an interesting backdrop to the album itself. We can stay in touch and ultimately I think we will create a much more in-depth article.TheGracefulSlick (talk) 19:55, 31 May 2016 (UTC)Reply
No problem. You can have as many sandboxes as you like of course (just call them Sandbox1, Sandbox2, etc.)! Ghmyrtle (talk) 20:11, 31 May 2016 (UTC)Reply
Ghmyrtle I added some background information to the article. Let me know how you feel about it and we can move forward. It covers the state of the band before recording sessions commenced. I think from this point on it would be more appropriate to discuss on the article's talk page if that is okay with you.TheGracefulSlick (talk) 13:30, 2 June 2016 (UTC)Reply
All looks good so far. I have the books by Hultkrans, Barney Hoskyns, and Michael Stuart-Ware, which I can draw on - and probably some other more general ones. My problem at the moment is in finding the time to do all the things I need to do (not just on WP), so I suggest you carry on, and if I disagree with anything I'll raise it on the article talk page (or direct with you if necessary). Regards, Ghmyrtle (talk) 18:21, 2 June 2016 (UTC).Reply

I haven't forgotten about this - it's just a question of finding the time. Can I suggest that we use a similar format to that at Marquee Moon (a featured article) - that is, Background, Recording, Music and lyrics (I suggest a song-by-song approach), Release and reception, Legacy and influence, Track listing, Personnel. I've now received the Einarson book, Forever Changes: Arthur Lee and the book of Love, which looks pretty good and reliable to me. By the way, there is an article about the creation of the album in the new August 2016 issue of Uncut, which is great to see, but a quick look suggests that it doesn't add anything new to the story. Ghmyrtle (talk) 11:22, 18 June 2016 (UTC)Reply

Ghmyrtle it's fine, I actually stopped adding to the article for now because I was waiting for the same book to be delivered. I can still contribute to the reception section in the meantime. The format you suggested sounds good, I'll go back to work on the article in a day or two.TheGracefulSlick (talk) 16:39, 18 June 2016 (UTC)Reply

Leon Day edit

Good job on getting the Leon Day entry situated for a GA review. Our articles on Negro league stars really lag behind the rest in terms of quality, and it can be difficult to find readily available sources on these guys. I tweaked some of the syntax in the article - hope you don't mind. Happy to help on articles like this if you need anything in the future. EricEnfermero (Talk) 03:36, 10 February 2017 (UTC)Reply

EricEnfermero I don't mind at all and I agree with you: Negro league stars need a lot of help in improving their quality. Some of it is sources but another point is many people simply are not aware that the league existed. I apologize if there is a NPOV (since you noted it); it is difficult to describe Day without being a little complimentary. He excelled at some much for one player. This is actually my first attempt at GA not related to music so I expected some things I need to work on. Thanks for the help!TheGracefulSlick (talk) 04:06, 10 February 2017 (UTC)Reply

I'm curious - is there a reason why you used an image of the A-side rather than the B-side (such as the image here)? I'm sure you had a good reason, so I won't change it myself. Ghmyrtle (talk) 12:14, 20 February 2017 (UTC)Reply

Not exactly Garage Rock but need an opinion on protocol edit

I haven't been exactly active on the garage rock task force lately, but that doesn't mean I stopped editing. I totally re-did the article for Duane Eddy's album, Have 'Twangy' Guitar Will Travel and I noticed you had done some minor editing on about a year ago. The question that I have is whether or not I should remove the infobox regarding singles? Since I did add a charting history it might be redundant. While I think that both are appropriate, I don't know and cannot locate any guidelines on this. What do you think? Frankzappatwin (talk) 16:48, 21 February 2017 (UTC)Reply

Frankzappatwin, from personal experience, I usually refer to the Younger Than Yesterday article or L.A. Woman (my own work) articles for format qualifications. Both articles keep the singles infoboxes and I think, for all articles, they are important as a part of the quick overview some readers are looking for.TheGracefulSlick (talk) 00:25, 22 February 2017 (UTC)Reply
PS if I were you I would make a section just called "Chart positions", and add the album's highest chart position.TheGracefulSlick (talk) 00:30, 22 February 2017 (UTC)Reply
That is my intention, but I simply ran out of time today. I sometimes work slowly.Frankzappatwin (talk) 01:55, 22 February 2017 (UTC)Reply

Rollback granted edit

Hi TheGracefulSlick. After reviewing your request for "rollbacker", I have enabled rollback on your account. Keep in mind these things when going to use rollback:

  • Getting rollback is no more momentous than installing Twinkle.
  • Rollback should be used to revert clear cases of vandalism only, and not good faith edits.
  • Rollback should never be used to edit war.
  • If abused, rollback rights can be revoked.
  • Use common sense.

If you no longer want rollback, contact me and I'll remove it. Also, for some more information on how to use rollback, see Wikipedia:Administrators' guide/Rollback (even though you're not an admin). I'm sure you'll do great with rollback, but feel free to leave me a message on my talk page if you run into troubles or have any questions about appropriate/inappropriate use of rollback. Attention: WikiProject African diaspora participants edit

Hello fellow project participants. Not sure how many users are still active as normal Wikipedia editors but felt the need to attempt to get a gauge on who can be called on for help with articles falling under the umbrella of the African diaspora project. According to the project's article table there are over six thousand articles related to the African diaspora; there's not a hundred at FA/GA grade and there's over twelve hundred that are unassessed. With Wikipedia being one of the major information reference points in the world today we should consider this unacceptable. Much work needs to be done on the rating of the importance of articles as well. Band names (Jades, Nomads, Shy Guys, etc.) edit

I noticed that you moved several pages, changing titles for the Jades, the Shy Guys, and the Nomads. While that is not necessarily a bad thing in every case, you might wish to discuss them beforehand (I realize that awhile back I made a title change for the Quests without discussion, which I admitted I should discussed it first--but I was confident that there would be no objection to the move).

  • You may be right in some cases (and I'd be open to your changes), but it would be best to discuss any title changes before pushing the "submit" button.
  • You probably made the right move for the Shy Guys--I'd tend to agree with your change, at least for now. The other Shy Guys from Sanford, FL, who did "Black Lightening Light", don't have much coverage on the internet, although they are discussed in Lemlich's book. They are unlikely to get writeup anytime soon. There probably weren't many other bands wiht that name anyway.

However, the Nomads (from Texas City) and the Jades (from Sparta Michigan) have a different set of issues. There were so many other garage bands with those same names in the 60s, some of the others well-known. Those bands have what you would call "ubiquitous names", and therefore need specialized treatment.

  • The Jades from Fort Worth were big in that scene, as you probably already know, and though they don't currently get enough write-up, they do have a small piece at 60s Garage bands.com and factor highly in the Teen a Go Go Documentary about the Fort Worth scene. I'd imagine we'll see more of them. I have an idea that they are prominently discussed in that "Tree Guitars and a Station Wagon" article.
  • The Jades from Muncie, Indiana do have an writeup in Garage Hangover, and I've wanted to write an article on them, but I want to find one more good source first.
  • Of course, you know that there have been a lot of American bands named the Nomads in different genres, probably going back to the 50s or earlier, and there were a lot of 60s garage bands of that name, some well-known.
  • There were other bands called the Nomads from Texas. The Nomads from Fort Worth were also well-known (probably better-known) and did the oft-comped "Be Nice"--but they don't have enough good sources at this time--I expect some write-ups to emerge eventually. So, that is why I opted for specificity when I titled the article with "...(Texas City Band)". We could change it to something like "...(Galveston band)", perhaps. We need local specificity, because as soon as some good sources crop-up on the Fort Worth band, you know that one of the people in the garage project is going to do a Wiki article for them.

I was very well-aware of all of this when I titled the articles. That doesn't mean that the titles should be set in stone--I'm open to changes. I'd imagine that you wanted the titles to be more standardized and look more notable, so I can see your point. But it might have been best to discuss some of those title changes first--such changes are theoretically supposed to be discussed in advance. Perhaps for now, it would be best to revert the titles of Jades' and Nomads' articles back to their previous wording (or something similar). But, we could keep the Shy Guys' title as you changed it. Garagepunk66 (talk) 05:06, 9 May 2017 (UTC)Reply

Garagepunk66 I only need to discuss page moves when they are controversial. Here is why a discussion was not needed: you are pointing out bands that do not have an article. That is WP:OtherStuffExists. You expect sources to emerge on other bands that haven't already; that's WP:Crystalball. Remember, it is just as easy to move the articles to a more specific title when (and only when) it is necessary. Please read Wikipedia:Article titles for more information. It is very specific and I simply followed its guidelines. Thanks.TheGracefulSlick (talk) 18:39, 9 May 2017 (UTC)Reply
Still, it is usually a good idea to discuss article title changes beforehand, unless you're 100% certain there will be no questions/objections from other editors. I could go along with the Nomads, and I agree about the Shy Guys. However, I do have an issue with the Jades from Michigan, because the Jades from Muncie have sources available. There is not only the Garage Hangover piece, but I believe they get some discussion in Markesich's book. Garagepunk66 (talk) 20:43, 9 May 2017 (UTC)Reply
Garagepunk66 I was 100% certain there would not be any policy-based objections when I made the moves and I was correct. Once an article actually exists about another American Jades band, you have a case to revert the adjustment. When and if that happens, I will happily revert the edit myself. But at the moment, that is the standardized approach to the article's title. If you read the guidelines provided, you will agree with me.TheGracefulSlick (talk) 20:49, 9 May 2017 (UTC)Reply
Fair enough. It was just a lot of name changes all at once--it all took me by surprise. We could make reversions later if need be, come the time. Just touching base. I guess I if I have a fault, I tend to look at things more from the standpoint of a historian than a Wikipedian, so I should balance things out more and move in the direction of notability guidelines, etc. Garagepunk66 (talk) 01:03, 10 May 2017 (UTC)Reply
Garagepunk66 the reason it seems like a lot of name changes at once is because I was also moving albums from the Pebbles series (I still need to finish that tedious process). The problem with that series is it describes the 1990s releases as "CD"s. in the titles While I understand what was meant by that, it is no longer an accurate discrepancy since some of the original Pebbles albums have been reissued on CDs. Some of the bands you wrote about are linked in the series so I also adjusted them as I went along.TheGracefulSlick (talk) 01:53, 10 May 2017 (UTC)Reply

Hello TheGracefulSlick. Your account has been added to the "New page reviewers" user group, allowing you to review new pages and mark them as patrolled, tag them for maintenance issues, or in some cases, tag them for deletion. The list of articles awaiting review is located at the New Pages Feed. New page reviewing is a vital function for policing the quality of the encylopedia, if you have not already done so, you must read the new tutorial at New Pages Review, the linked guides and essays, and fully understand the various deletion criteria. If you need more help or wish to discuss the process, please join or start a thread at page reviewer talk.

  • URGENT: Please consider helping get the huge backlog down to a manageable number of pages as soon as possible.
  • Be nice to new users - they are often not aware of doing anything wrong.
  • You will frequently be asked by users to explain why their page is being deleted - be formal and polite in your approach to them too, even if they are not.
  • Don't review a page if you are not sure what to do. Just leave it for another reviewer.
  • Remember that quality is quintessential to good patrolling. Take your time to patrol each article, there is no rush. Use the message feature and offer basic advice.

The reviewer right does not change your status or how you can edit articles. If you no longer want this user right, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. In case of abuse or persistent inaccuracy of reviewing, the right can be revoked at any time by an administrator. ALT: ...that Soviet economist banker Dimitri Navachine was assassinated in downtown Paris because it was suspected he possessed documents that showed innocence of political prisoners being held in Moscow? (199 characters)
Then just put something in the article along these lines and use the news clip for reference.Just ideas....--Doug Coldwell (talk) 13:03, 6 June 2017 (UTC)Reply
I've substantially researched this guy. Have put together lots of sources and collected the clips. Will add substantially to the article, which is (IMO) misleading as it presently stands. The murder is still listed as unsolved by the Paris police. It is tied to at least three other murders (Carlo and Nello Rosselli, Italian antiFascist dissidents; Laetitia Nourrissat Toureaux, stabbed to death in plain sight while riding the Paris Metro on 16 May, 1937 in “the perfect crime”). La Cagoule is one suspected organization (Jean Filliol is named as the assassin); but the NKVD is another (Panteleimon Takhchiyanov, officer of the NKVD special reserve was named as the assassin in the research/release in 2004 of KGB documents). 7&6=thirteen () 13:28, 6 June 2017 (UTC)Reply
User:7&6=thirteen could you possibly add the information about NKVD agent or provide the source? I was not trying to miselead readers but more recent sources seemed to support the La Cagoule theory. I can include the connection to the other murders in the meantime.TheGracefulSlick (talk) 00:05, 7 June 2017 (UTC)Reply
Please add me and Doug Coldwell as cocreators to this article. 7&6=thirteen () 16:55, 8 June 2017 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, but I don't feel I have added enough to be a bona-fide co-creator. I'll just make improvements.--Doug Coldwell (talk) 18:30, 8 June 2017 (UTC)Reply

  • PS - User:7&6=thirteen I think we want to avoid cluttering the paragraph by removing some of the references stacked together after one sentence. Fishmans Article Recreation edit

Hi Grace, I just saw your message on my talk page. I would very much like help re-creating the Uchu Nippon Setagaya article that was deleted at AfD. I have just added an email to my account. I apologize if this is not the right place to talk about this; I have never added to a talk page before, and was not sure whether I should reply to the section you created on my talk page, or reply on your talk page. I opted for the latter to insure that you would see this, as I am not certain that you would have been notified had I replied to your note in my talk page. One more thing I would like to note is that I did not know about that canvassing guideline. I simply do not speak Japanese, so I was having a very hard time navigating Japanese sources. For this reason, I reached out to others for help finding and interpreting Japanese coverage of the album. At the time, I was unaware this violated any rules. In any case, I am sorry for any misunderstanding, and I am excited to get the page re-created. How should I proceed? Should I wait for an email, or take some other action?
