Moors
editHello T L Miles! I did not assume bad faith (in fact one could say that I always assume good faith from someone who support the Socialist Party USA...). And I do get your point on Moor being a portmanteau term. Still, this is an issue that must be taken with care, so as not to provoke any confusions. I agee tha the article is a mess. I just did some edits to clean up some obvious errors (confusing Spain with Iberia...), and introduce some missing links. If you have an overall proposal for the article, please let it be known! Thanks. See you around. The Ogre (talk) 14:39, 10 August 2008 (UTC)
African economy
editHi. I've started a full set of templates for each of the African economies at Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/Economy templates. Basically I see them as a good instrastructure to develop each of the economies on wikipedia. It gives us the chance to link case studies on many of the main exports/industries in the country was is very important as a vast proportion of the population is often involved in such industries. See for example Pineapple production in Côte d'Ivoire and how the template is used. Any help you can give on building up the templates with potential articles related to the economy, distributing the templates in the articles linked or filling in the red links for be much appreciated! For instance Template:Economy of Angola has some notable content already but potentially these templates can be crammed full with articles related to the economy by African country. Orphaned non-free media (Image:Rtigroupe.PNG)
editThanks for uploading Image:Rtigroupe.PNG. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).
If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 06:02, 12 September 2008 (UTC)
Re: Almamy Almami, Almany, Almani (title) etc.
editHello T L Miles! I moved my article Almamy because the subject is professionaly known under this name, I write, edit, and expand articles on musical artists and Almamy is one of them. My subject has not released "two songs off myspace" like you said and is not a DJ but a notable recording artist from the New York City music scene who has commercially, and successfully, released four projects and received press coverage. The subject meets the requirements of notability
I absolutely understand your concern over my moving your article Almami and that the title of rulers of several large African states (from which Almamy does not take his name! It is his birth name)) is notable. But so is my article on a senegalese-born recording artist (who meets the requirements of notability) making a success of himself in the US music industry.
You are absolutely right, manually blanking pages and moving them was not good practice on my part but the intentions were not to vandalize. I did not quite know what I was doing until I received messages telling it was not the right way to operate.
Your article was already under the name Almami so I hope we can come to an understanding and that we'll agree that my article needs to be under the subject birth name, Almamy, for which he is also professionaly known.
P.S. I created a disambiguation page, Almamy (disambiguation), to group all the articles refering to the same name.

BBC IP edits
editHi,
There's no need to go saying things like "Perhaps the BBC may take no action over falsification of biographies of living people, but I hear their standards are a bit lower than Wikipedia's" or "BBC employees can't, apparently, be trusted not to vandalise things". Goading people isn't likely to stop them from editing, and nor is making attacks on their employers. If the issue is investigated by the BBC, it's probably better that we treat it as seriously as they should be. Chris Cunningham (not at work) - talk 15:30, 23 September 2008 (UTC)
- I will go further and say I have no idea why you are presuming that this is vandalism or that someone at the BBC is trying to discredit wikipedia. Far more likely, someone at the BBC heard of this fact, couldn't be bothered to research it properly and so just added it to wikipedia to back them up. Lazy and bad journalism definitely, unacceptable addition to wikipedia that should be reverted on sight, definitely. But vandalism? No. An attempt to discredit wikipedia? Almost definitely not. It's rather unlikely anyone would be dumb enough to add inaccuracies to a wikipedia article then cite it in an article in their own paper then attempt to use that to discredit wikipedia since even if they hid their tracks better, it's still far more likely to discredit their paper then wikipedia when it comes out. In other words, if it's someone trying to discredit anything, it's far more likely to be someone at the BBC working to discredit the BBC. Nil Einne (talk) 18:41, 25 September 2008 (UTC)
- Looking into this further, it appears you are presuming someone at the BBC, with a racist agenda towards Africans, is trying to make it sound like they have big families and is using the BBC and wikipedia to further their goal. The only reason I can presume you belief this is because it was added to two articles on wikipedia. While this is remotely possible, it's an unnecessarily complicated rationale for what happened (Occam's razor). Far more likely, as I said above, someone heard that Kgalema Motlanthe was in a thirteen children family but needed something to back it up. They probably told someone low down in the food chain to research it. This person may or may not have tried but whatever the case they eventually decided just to use wikipedia to back it up. Perhaps they confused the names or perhaps because they were totally clueless and didn't even know who the new president of South Africa was (as both were candidates to be the new President) or for whatever other reason; they added it to the wrong article. When they realised their mistake, they added it to the right article, not bothering of course to 'correct' their earlier addition. Adding unreferenced material to wikipedia is of course bad, particularly with BLPs. Adding unreferenced material and then using it to back up something you are writing is even worse. However since it's unlikely the person was trying to harm or introduce misinformation into wikipedia (indeed they probably believed it to be true), it's rather difficult to call this vandalism. You are quite right to revert the additions, and to take it up with the BBC and the IP. However accusing someone at the BBC of malice, when it's far more likely to be stupidity doesn't help the situation. This is already serious enough, without bringing complicated hidden agendas into it which just confuse the situation. P.S. I wrote this message before reading your reply. Nil Einne (talk) 19:19, 25 September 2008 (UTC)
- (Read your reply now.) From what I've seen and read, journalists use wikipedia all the time (I've personally seen wikipedia referenced several times from respectable media although not from the BBC that I recall not that I visit the BBC that much). At least this one actually referenced wikipedia unlike many, including I suspect from the BBC, who use wikipedia as a source and then don't even mention it. It's a rather sad state of affairs to be sure, and there are a lot of people who do use wikipedia for malicious intent, but in this particular instance I would say it's rather unlikely. And I personally highly doubt it's the first time a BBC article has referenced wikipedia as a source. Remember as well that BBC changes their articles as they develop and unlike with us, there is no public edit history. The article in question no longer mentions wikipedia as I suspect with a number of other articles on the BBC. It's possible someone realised how dubious the information is with people (perhaps you?) writing to them about this. Or perhaps the BBC has a policy that wikipedia can only be used as a source for a short time and it must be sourced to wikipedia (if you are going to use wikipedia as a source, such a policy makes sense) and a better reference must be found to replace it (remember this was a highly important article, about the new President of one of the most important African countries, they would have been in a rush to get it out). Ultimately, it's unlikely we will never know but as I said above, don't proscribe malicious intent what can be put down to stupidity, especially with such limited evidence because 99 times out of 100 you will be wrong. (And besides that, it rarely helps the situation which is the main reason I'm a bit worked up about this) Nil Einne (talk) 19:52, 25 September 2008 (UTC)

editHope you are doing well. I've created Category:Timbuktu. I see you;ve also expanded Senegalese wrestling, an article which I started. We now have images too! Great! The Bald One White cat 19:44, 25 September 2008 (UTC)
Cool. You know that there is now a website which has demo data on Senegalese settlements? I wonder if there is a similar one for Niger or Mali? There ar enumerous articles on French wikipedia which need starting and translating too. Combining severla sites and French wiki and any commons images now available we should be able to create some decent starter articles for Senegal. I started Mlomp the other day. Earlier I began filling out Template:Economy of Ghana with articles like the obscure Fan Milk ! The Bald One White cat 20:10, 25 September 2008 (UTC)

Niger Air Force
editHello! My name is Muhammad Bilal Khan, I am from Pakistan and I am an avid fan of air force related topics. My special interest is in the history of exotic African air forces. I noticed that you edited the page of Military of Niger several times. So I had some questions about NAF.
According to the rebel blog which has been cited as a source, the helicopter(s) which went down on 27th June Mi-24s while you've maintained that it was Mi-17s. Which claim is correct? have you independently verified this claim in some way? and how many helicopter(s) were actually shot down on that day?
Any additional details/photos/whatever regarding NAF would be welcome. Thanks in advance. Badkhan (talk) 12:37, 15 October 2008 (UTC)

Image permission problem with Image:Halida Thanh Hoa.gif
editThanks for uploading Image:Halida Thanh Hoa.gif. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the image (or other media file) agreed to license it under the given license.
If you created this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either
- make a note permitting reuse under the GFDL or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
- Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en@wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here.
If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the image to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the image has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en@wikimedia.org.
If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the image's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.
If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Images lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Skier Dude (talk) 06:38, 31 December 2008 (UTC)

Mali and Mauritania
editHi, I've got around the starting on Mauritania and Mali, Niger and Senegal too, "your countries" on here, he need the help big time. I've started Communes of Mauritania and I'v ebeen doing some research and have found a list of 703 communes of Mali and population. So pretty soon we will have Mauritania and Mali covered adminstratively. Wanna help? Dr. Blofeld White cat 17:34, 21 January 2009 (UTC)
Check out Gory Gopela a commune of Mali I just started. I've started the other communes of Kayes too. I;ve found this. Probably about 400 of the communes once started could be written into equally long articles. One thing though can you clear up the difference between arrondissements and communes for Mali? I know that an arrondisement is a cluster of communes but oddly on the arrondisements page it lists the communes. Could you assert if this is correct? Also you may want to list all of the Communes of Niger as I've started a few tthat wer elinked. Next port of call though is to get all of the cercles started with nice infoboxes. I also added a box to your eastern rogue town article you recently started beginning with A and have made a flickr agreement and started an article using them for Kalabougou. I would suggest that you also contatc people on flickr to make agreements so we can dramatically improve our image content of these countries. Dr. Blofeld White cat 13:10, 24 January 2009 (UTC)
I'm not sure why you won't respond but you can expand Anderamboukane using info from Anderamboukane at csa-mali.org. Check out the main page at the site here it has info on most of the communes of Mali, I;d appreciate any help in expand them using this. Given that I'm doing my best to get the communes started and I made maps of all of the cercles of Mali and started the rest I would hope you will respond to me, Thanks Dr. Blofeld White cat 15:57, 8 February 2009 (UTC)
Thanks. I've just meen making some more flickr agreements, You will be extremely pleased to see these images (this is what I've uploaded so far. This guy has around 1700 and counting images of really localised places in French west Africa, it has enabled me to add photos of some of the communes and villages. Check out his images on flickr particularly those of the Saharan landscapes -they are amazing. If we could make more flickr agreements I reckon combined with the site I mentioned we could do an awful amount of good for Mali on here at least. Dr. Blofeld White cat 22:52, 8 February 2009 (UTC)
If you could make a start on Template:Communes of the Kayes Region I am gradually working through adding all of the communes of Mali. I've just started Template:Communes of the Koulikoro Region From now on I will start them with the USAID link ready for later expansion. If we could somehow speed up the process with automated tools or something I reckon we could move very well. Dr. Blofeld White cat 22:58, 8 February 2009 (UTC)
Hello. Good news my flickr agreement is sorted, we can now upload any of Jacques images. Good image? Have you started on those communes yet? Dr. Blofeld White cat 23:21, 9 February 2009 (UTC)

The category in question was empty -- it had no pages in it -- so I blanked it. Empty categories are subject to speedy deletion after four days. Blanking the page serves two purposes: it puts (empty) in the page history to convince the deleting admin that the category was really empty at that time, and it alerts interested parties that the category may be speedily deleted. (No discussion is required for speedy deletion.) While you're welcome to revert the blanking, the category remains vulnerable to deletion as long as there are no pages in it. --Stepheng3 (talk) 18:29, 9 February 2009 (UTC)
