Hello Stanley Bannerman. Your recent edits to Howard Kippenberger's article caught my eye and I saw you created an article on the 10th Infantry Brigade (I hope you don't mind, I made a few tweaks to the article). If you are not already aware, the Military history WikiProject is a group of editors working to improve Wikipedia's coverage of topics related to military history. Nice Job for the 9th Brigade edit
G'day Stanley, I see you have thoroughly improved upon the New Zealand article that an Australian started... and then subsequently forgot about. Thanks for picking up my undeserved slack. By the by, I do remember finding a reference to the 9th brigade on the original website that I used as a source that the 9th was used a sort of a backup, reserve, or reinforcement formation before its creation in Italy... Use as you wish. These past 2-3 weeks must have been eventful as your first forays into wikipedia (as this account [just in case this is a alternate account]). - Hi, I am interested in the reference you mention. Looking back through the article history I do seem to have removed this reference - which I may as well add back in. It doesn't seem to mention anything about its formation prior to Italy though. I do suspect that you are right as I am aware that the NZ home guard was formed into brigades prior to 1944 and the 9th may have been one of these. 5th Division (New Zealand) gives an example of this, but I do not currently have access to the book which the article cites (or any other useful references). - Actually that was the subsidiary source for confirming the OHNZSWW source which I found on the Victoria University of Wellington Library. And I believe that is also where I found the previous service of the 9th (Though not necessarily in the same book). Personally I don't know about the NZ Home Guard and its formations, the only direction I can remember to point you to was that I was searching for the battalions of the NZ Army that did not appear on Wikipedia even though the cardinal numbers of higher battalions would suggest that they would exist. If you want more clarification on anything, remember to just @IronBattalion:. Taranaki Regiment edit
Hi Stanley, I have taken a look at this one due to your assessment requests - I think the issue is that you have citations (notes 43 to 46) to books but without page numbers. I quickly tried adding the one for O'Neill but can't find where it says the Taranaki Regiment supplied men for the 36th; the closest is a mention of the Central Military District. On a separate note, have you considered getting involved with the GA/A-Class process? For example, I think the 7th Anti-Tank Regiment is not far away from GA standard (although the lead should be expanded). Cheers, Zawed (talk) 07:29, 16 March 2022 (UTC)
- Thanks @Zawed:. I have gone back and rejigged this. My initial intention was to use Moorhead as the reference to confirm the Taranaki-Xth Battalion relation. Then the various official histories in the entirety were intended to refer to their WW2 actions, hence no page numbers. I have now tried to put in explicit page numbers, but this is a little clunky as the page numbers are now most of the book. I have, however, given an exact page for the Taranaki companies of the 19th, 22nd and 25th which are explicit stated in the organisation in each of the first chapters, although they are also referred to throughout the books. Regarding O'Neil, the 36th didn't have a Taranaki company as far as I know, which is why you didn't find anything. Moorhead, does however explicitly claim the relationship. On the point of GA/A-Class reviews, yes I have been thinking about going through that, I just haven't quite picked up the courage to do it yet. Stanley Bannerman (talk) 22:13, 16 March 2022 (UTC)
- Hi, in respect of Sinclair, Henderson, and Puttick, citing such a large page ranges is not desirable as the reader will need parse them in order to verify the cited facts. Do you have Pugsley's A Bloody Road Home? Perhaps cite the page that has the order of battle for the 2nd Division in support of the fact that those battalions were part of it, and then maybe the introduction or conclusion pages for the countries in which they fought. McGibbon's Oxford Companion to NZ Military History may be useful as an alternative. The O'Neil ref has a largish page range as well but not as bad. Invitation to an in-person meetup in Mohua / Golden Bay edit
Thinking about your summer break? Think about joining other Wikipedians and Wikimedians in Golden Bay / Mohua! Details are on the meetup page. There's heaps of interesting stuff to work on e.g. the oldest extant waka or New Zealand's oldest ongoing legal case. Or you may spend your time taking photos and then upload them.
Golden Bay is hard to get to and the airline flying into Tākaka uses small planes, so we are holding some seats from and to Wellington and we are offering attendees a $200 travel subsidy to help with costs.
