Late Welcome edit

Thanks for the message on my talk page, but as this account has edits going back a year or so, seems a bit redundant. What edit prompted you to give me the noob welcome, out of interest? ;) --zippedmartin 14:17, 9 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for the welcome edit

I really appreciate the welcome notice. From what I have seen here at wikipedia, this is one of the coolest online projects going. I have gone through the tutorial and edited some articles already, and I can tell by how addictive it has been that I will be with Wikipedia for a long time. Thanks again. Thank you, Spangineer! if you're around, you're the right person to ask: how do I insert a link to a SECTION of some article (e.g. to the heading List of Popes, on your talk page, instead than the top)??? i'm editing this right now --zuben

Thanks for the welcome edit

Hello there! I'm General Subwoofer! I just waanted to say thanks for your nice welcome. I hope to do lots of editing here at Wikipedia. Anyway, thanks for all that info you gave me. I mostly had to teach myself how to use Wikipedia before learning about the tutorial... that's about it. Good luck to you you with your editing!

User:Humanbot update 13 June 2005 edit

The spelling2 project (to work on secondary namespaces) was opened and finished. Progress charts will be available soon.

Version six-three tracks who made the edits, and rankings are available. Much of the work was done while I was asleep, explaining my low place ;).

The next project, which may even be released today, will probably fix incorrectly capitalised headings, particularly "See Also" and "External Links".

The mailing list has grown to 24 people and while that is very nice for my ego, it is rather difficult to send out updates. This is why I did not send out a notice that the spelling2 project had opened. From now on, then, you must watch User:Humanbot/announce for updates. r3m0t talk 12:05, Jun 13, 2005 (UTC)

Esbozos edit

Espero haber contestado a tu pregunta. Saludos PACO 22:18, 14 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Lord of the Flies edit

Hi

I don't know if it;s bad form to comment one people's user pages, but here goes; you describe Lord of the Flies as a "US novel". Golding was British, and didn't live in the US until several years after he had written it. Paul Tracy\talk

Would you do anything differently? edit

Hey Grutness, I've got a question for you...

Ooo. Good question. I think the two big bugbears are consistency of naming and the proliferation of "unauthorised" templates. So I'd have liked it if there were some rules in place for keeping the naming of stub templates and categories consistent - the stub category names should be consistent with the names of the categories they feed into, too. And I'd make sure there were big notices everywhere telling people not to make new templates without going through a discussion process at WP:WSS first! Good luck! Grutness...wha? 01:32, 17 Jun 2005 (UTC)

When you say consistency of naming, could you give me an example of something that's not consistent? Also, could you point me to any discussion that took place over what type of stub sorting system to use?

I may be in the minority, but I don't like Us-geo-stub or Uk-geo-stub, since I feel that they should be capitalised like the propoer nouns they represent (they redirect to them: US-geo-stub and UK-geo-stub). But more importantly it's things like {{cricket stub}}, {{SoapChar}}, {{Mathbiostub}}, which don't fit in with the standard "xx-stub" format, ambiguous names like {{bio-stub}} (biography or biology?), and different versions of the same word (We have {{UK-hist-stub}}, {{US-hist-stub}}, and {{Russian-history-stub}}, for instance). There are quite a lot like this listed on Wikipedia:WikiProject Stub sorting/Naming guidelines.
As to the second question, no... we largely made it up as we went along, I think. But have a look through the pages of WP:WSS - there may well be something there that is of use (including the naming guideline page I just named). Grutness...wha? 11:03, 17 Jun 2005 (UTC)

We need to get working on our portal/directory project, and it's obvious that neither of us can do much major work, so we need to be recruiting supporters. That's about all I have to say...just a reminder that we need to work on the project. Clarkefreak 23:02, 19 Jun 2005 (UTC)

All was going along fine.... edit

I had the MIG CAD file open as I was slicing and dicing until.... she told me the rabbits got out and were running loose! I'll have to try again in the morn. Why not point out that the copper cup is serving an important function. Electrically isolating the torch head, all but the contact tip and wire lead, from the grounded work piece. As I'm the one drafting, I'll run it up the flag pole and do a bit of caption edit to boot. You'll let me know. Also... yes, the lead photo in Welding is a MIG torch. yet very difficult to see. It is however a great shot for opening the article.... lots of "sizzle and pop" as the PR would say. Point taken though, we can try and get a better photo for the more technical instruction. I'll see what I can do. TTLightningRod 05:25, 21 Jun 2005 (UTC)

How could you?! edit

I was totally with you until you added The Scarlet Letter. That was the most excruciatingly dull book I've ever read. And I say that with a good knowledge of and interest in the historical period. If you really want to read a good nineteenth century novel, try a Charles Dickens one. And if you really want a good American book from that period, try Walden. But not The Scarlet Letter, anything but that! --Dmcdevit 29 June 2005 20:43 (UTC)

Wait a minute, you're telling me Walden is unrealistic?! Let me quote from The Scarlet Letter, I think this quote just about sums it up:

"As the two wayfarers came within the precincts of the town, the children of the Puritans looked up from their play—or what passed for play with those sombre little urchins—and spake gravely one to another—

'Behold, verily, there is the woman of the scarlet letter; and of a truth, moreover, there is the likeness of the scarlet letter running along by her side! Come, therefore, and let us fling mud at them!'"

I do think The Scarlet Letter makes a good point about hypocrisy, but the rest is utterly unbelievable. I actually think Crime and Punishment makes a better statement about faith than The Scarlet Letter (and really Huck Finn does, too :). By the way, if you haven't read it yet, I think The Pickwick Papers is a great one. --Dmcdevit 29 June 2005 22:01 (UTC)

You don't need to thank me for that. I think you would make a fine admin. I'm just doing my duty as a Wikipedian. (I sound kind of patriotic here, don't I?) By the way, everytime I shut down my comp, should I log out from Wikipedia or can I just let my account keep on running? Will it make any difference? --shreshth 30 June 2005 15:42 (UTC)

Sorry, we edit conflicted. I tried to summarise my understanding of the talk page discussion, but given your edit and comment on WP:FLC, wonder if I have the wrong end of the stick. I thought the ones in [square brackets] were most stable isotopes and the others were some sort of average... Shall I leave it to you to sort out? It looks like you know what you are doing! -- ALoan (Talk) 30 June 2005 18:17 (UTC)

No no no - thank you for sorting it out and merging our two sets of sets of comments - I think your most recent change to the footnote is perfect.
On the lead, the key sets out the information that is included: it seemed a bit otiose to say the same thing two lines above - what do you think? Other than adding an exposition on what a period table is, about groups and periods, explaining atomic masses and weights and so on (which again I think is unnecessary) I'm not sure what else we should add to the lead. -- ALoan (Talk) 30 June 2005 19:57 (UTC)

From your schedule, it looks like you're still planning to write this weekend before having two weeks off. Congratulations! It's my pleasure to let you know that, consensus being reached, you are now an administrator. You should read the relevant policies and other pages linked to from the administrators' reading list before carrying out tasks like deletion, protection, banning users, and editing protected pages such as the Main Page. Most of what you do is easily reversible by other sysops, apart from page history merges and image deletion, so please be especially careful with those. You might find the new administrators' how-to guide helpful. Cheers! -- Cecropia | explains it all ® 4 July 2005 01:52 (UTC)

Hi Nathaniel: Could you please educate me on how to license images in Wikipedia? I would prefer to give a "Creative Commons Attribution/Share-Alike License" to my images. What all information should be put along with the images when I upload them? Also please provide me any relevant information in this regard. Thanks, Jyotirmaya Nanda 22:39, July 10, 2005 (UTC)

Gas Welding edit

You don't have a simple circuit diagram available? Too bad I got rid of my textbooks, I could have found a simpler one there. If you could describe a basic ckt, I could draw it for you. Is this OK? =Nichalp «Talk»= 11:19, July 15, 2005 (UTC)

I was referring to the latter (a simple ckt.) Since you mentioned the problems drawing the larger ckt, a simpler one describing the overall process would suffice. The major components can be put in a block.

For this, I would need more information. If you could draw me a rough diagram in a paint program, OR point me to an online graphic, I could take it from there. Thanks =Nichalp «Talk»= 11:37, July 15, 2005 (UTC)

I take it that you mean FIGURE 1 and FIGURE 7? =Nichalp «Talk»= 15:09, July 15, 2005 (UTC)
I can draw it but I'm not a professional. I cannot draw the wire feed unit and the gas cylinder as well as it is given here. Instead I'll make them a block. Is it ok? I'll post the images in a day's time. =Nichalp «Talk»= 15:30, July 15, 2005 (UTC)

Your image edit

You shouldn't underestimate your skills. It a decent image and drives home the process completely. One problem though: Your image file size is too large. I guess you've saved it as PNG-24. If you could save it as a PNG-8: 32 or 16 colour palatte, the image should compress to around 3-5 kb. Good work! =Nichalp «Talk»= 09:35, July 17, 2005 (UTC)

Typhoons edit

Thanks for the welcome. I started a new page that I felt was important this hurricane season. I was not able to find any pages on current tropical activity in north west pacific ocean. This seemed odd to me as Japan was in the news last summer for having more Typhoon strikes then in recent years. More then Florida which got all the headlines here in the US. I did a rough outline page and started adding to it for the 2005 season. The geography of the area confuses me a little and I had to do some quick edits to correct mistakes as I discovered them. However the most confusing thing about this area is that Typhoons can and often do have two different names. The Phillipines have their own list of names for storms in their areas. From what I find online it seems they feel using their own name, even on a previously named storm, better alerts their population of storms that threaten them. They also name Tropical Depressions which no other agency does until Tropical Storm strength because of severe inland flooding depressions bring to the Phillipines. For now I've tried to mark the Phillipine names in parenthesis after the International name. Readers outside the Phillipines would not be familiar with that name. Typhoon 2000 has excellent resource material but reverses this convention since they are based in the Phillipines. I would welcome assistance from others with an interest in tropical weather to help maintain the page and fill in historical data.
