Schreyer Honors College scholarship information edit

Hi,

Apparently, the brochure you pointed to is outdated. That used to be the amount, but with Ridge's tuition increases the amount was raised in 2004 to be proportional to the increased tuition. The source is [1] (2.7MB). As you can see, that letter is dated February 21, 2006, or last Tuesday.

If you have the time, you're welcome to upload the file to Wikisource after blacking out the personal information. I'll take the original offline tomorrow night.

Hope this answers your question,

Hey Spangineer, regarding your objections at the Che Guevara FAC, I believe I have (hopefully) addressed all your concerns. Any other comments would be appreciated. LordViD 14:01, 26 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

This may be...a rather awkward question. I read on your (awesome) userpage that you study Spanish. May I assume that you are fluent in the language? You see, Polaris999 had this nifty idea of adding a sound byte to Che Guevara of a spanish speaker pronouncing "Ernesto Che Guevara". I understand that you may not have the time, or the technical skills to record it, so it's OK if you decline. Thanks! LordViD 18:55, 1 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

CG article: name of sub-section edit

Hello Spangineer -- I was just reviewing the entire CG article and got the strong feeling that the title of the sub-section "Cultural Impact" promises much more than the text delivers. I therefore changed it to "Films and video games", combining those two classifications that had previously had separate sub-sections. Is this all right with you? It seems to me that "Cultural Impact" should be developed as a "daughter" article: So much can -- and should -- be written on this subject ... (But if you don't agree, please do change it back!) Electrical and Electronics Engineering Survey edit

Hi Spangineer,

Currently there is a survey on the electrical and electronics engineering talk page on whether to redirect electrical and electronics engineering to the featured electrical engineering article. The survey has five votes, most of which are for the proposal, but does not seem to be getting any additional traffic. This has left the electrical engineering article with an unsightly merge tag. If you could review the issue and possibly offer your opinion, it would be most appreciated. Hopefully this would help the issue reach a conclusion.

Thanks,

Moving just the history of a page edit

Hola. Saw your note on the Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva FAC about the improper archiving. Here's what I did to fix it (I'm pretty sure I did this correctly). First thing I did was delete the whole FAC. I then restored just the edits from the last FAC. After restoration, I moved the page to the new location here. I went back to the FAC and deleted the redirect, then immidiately restored the new FAC edits (minus my move). Voila! I'm not sure if there is an easier way to do this, though, and this type of thing is only really practical on pages with a small amount of edits. --Jeffrey O. New York Dialect edit

Hi,

I am writing because I wanted to see how I could petition to have the New York-New Jersey English article split into two parts: New York Dialect and New Jersey Dialects. Other than the fact that NY Dialect is spoken in extreme Northeastern NJ, there is no reason for them to be together. New Jersey has a number of dialects spoken in it, one of which is Philadelphia dialect (which needs its own page btw).

Another thing: is it possible to change the name of Nuyorican English, to New York Latino English? It's not really centered on the Puerto Rican community any more.

Dead Link cleanup edit

WayneRay 15:45, 27 March 2006 (UTC)WayneRay In an effort to cleanup the large poetry related sections, I have cleaned up the dead links (in red) and have left the now unlinked names. Is it proper wikietiquette to leave unlinked names in lists, or should they be ommitted as there is no write up on the poet/author? Thanks for your help in this matter.Reply

Sorry I didn't respond earlier. Normally on wikipedia we link anything that could potentially have its own article. That can be tough to judge, but if there's list of poets who have published works, I'd leave the red links there so that editors are able to easily create articles on them. Does that answer your question? —Spangineer[es] (háblame) 02:40, 30 March 2006 (UTC)

WayneRay 17:41, 30 March 2006 (UTC)WayneRay Yes, I think I will leave them un linked. I believe i had put a Talk notice that a name should't be listed if the poster doesn't have the information, and no one has responded so I will leave further red links . Thanks for your help.Reply

George Atherton GA edit

Glad you understood my comments were meant to be constructive. Let me answer a couple of your questions:

For your second point, are you looking for inline citations?

I'm looking for some way to match the details with the sources. Even to simply state in the text "John Doe wrote", then have John Doe's book/article cited at the bottom would help. But if John Doe is being quoted by Henry Smith, then I would appreciate an inline citation.

As for your third point; you're right, most of the article is on his work at the university.

After I wrote my comments, I realized what I would like to see in this section is not so much "these changes were made at Penn State during his tenure" but "during his tenure, Atherton did these things which caused these changes". As the sections I criticized currently read, he might as well have waved a magic wand & the changes happened; I suspect he put in a lot of hard work convincing people to support him & answering criticisms -- this is how the article should describe his tenure. And I suspect you could rewrite this article in this manner with your current research.

Good luck with the article, & hope to see it either at GA or FA soon. -- llywrch 02:26, 30 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

Whoa! I must apologise for having mistakenly deleted Static grass. I'm not too sure what went on, I was deleting uncontested {{prod}}ded articles based on the highlighted articles on this list. I guess I clicked the wrong link, but am surprised I hadn't noticed that {{prod}} had been removed, maybe I was viewing a cached version of the page :S. Anyhow, I'm sorry about that mistake, I would contest the notability of the article as it currently stands, but that's obviously no reason for it to be deleted without due discussion. Just want to thank you for calming the situation down. I didn't notice that he reported us to WP:AIV until just now... I guess that's how you got involved. I really tried from the outset to handle it as reasonably as possible from the time he posted on my talk page, but... *shrug* I wrote quite a long message of welcome and discussion of the way consensus works and pointed out relevant policies to his talk page, don't know if you saw it before he removed it. I'm still willing to assume good faith to the point of believing that he isn't affiliated with the site, but it seemed that anger against the relevant Wikipedia policies about fan sites just spilled over to be directed at us. - dharmabum 02:59, 2 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

apostrophe edit

Hi; it's a vexed question, and style manuals disagree on the issue. My personal preference is to add 's no matter what the final letter is in a singular noun (Jesus's, Jones's, etc), because it's consistent and simple. However, some manuals say just add an apostrophe alone to word-final s, and some say only when it's the name of a religious or mythical figure (Jesus', Venus'); others say only to add the s after the apostrophe when it results in an extra spoken syllable (e.g., <jonzez = Jones's). My initial attempt to assist was rebuked with a belligerent attitude and a bit o' name calling. Joan of Arc edit

Hi Silence; I've changed the wording slightly again. Saying that something "is believed" makes it sound like there's little dispute among scholars that that is the case, but I don't get the impression that that is true. The wording is now "She had visions, which many believe to be from God". I've changed the text appearing on the main page back to what you had originally, but if you agree with this last change, I'll fix the main page text as well. Thanks! —Spangineer[es] (háblame) 00:55, 16 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

I understand; It's a tricky thing to word. The problem, though, is that "believed" wasn't short for "which are believed" or "which many believe"; it was short for "which were believed" (i.e. by Joan and many people around her, including her own executioner). It was shortened largely because "were" would imply that noone believes they were from God today, which could offend Roman Catholics, who still believe that. I suppose it's tough to tread the line between ambiguity and neutrality; I don't think the current solution is satisfactory, though. "which many believe" makes it sound even more like it's a very widely-held belief, even though I'm sure that most people in the world, not being Christians, don't believe it. -Silence 00:59, 16 April 2006 (UTC)Reply
What about "believed by many to be from God"? That would save the past tense at least, and would make the sentence sound better. As for the use of "many", I don't think that it more strongly suggests that it is generally believed. For a different example, I'd much prefer "many believe that evolution is false" to "it is believed that evolution is false". Both sentences are technically true, but the first qualifies the believing. If the adjective were "most" or something along those lines that attempted to say exactly how many believe it, well, that's different. Ah, semantics =). —Spangineer[es] (háblame) 01:10, 16 April 2006 (UTC)Reply
As, I've already said quite clearly, "it is believed that evolution is false" is a false comparison, as there was no "it is" in the original sentence; it merely said "She had visions, believed to be from God,"; "She had visions that are believed to be from God" would have a 100% different meaning, and failing to stop the difference is bizarre indeed. But your new suggestion is better, at least, than the one currently on the page. -Silence 01:15, 16 April 2006 (UTC)Reply
Sorry, I don't see any difference; it appears to me that "it is" or "they were" or whatever is clearly implied. Since there is no explicit subject who is doing the believing, I don't see any other option. No matter; I've changed the text back to the way it was originally, and I leave it to you to make changes you deem appropriate, if any. —Spangineer[es] (háblame) 01:45, 16 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Regarding the rollback issue - plenty has been said on both sides. I have provided the above examples to address your concern over lack of discussion. Thanks. --Jay(Reply) 04:06, 16 April 2006 (UTC)Reply
