Hi PFHLai, thanks for your copyedits on Chet Bitterman. Also, if I came across as rude when you said the article was on the shorter side, I apologize. It seemed to me that you were trying to say that the article did not meet the DYK requirements (you said "Please expand", which I took as meaning that the article was unacceptable in its current state). Anyway, I respect you for trying to improve the DYK standards (I try to do that all the time on FAC), but could I recommend that you change your wording somewhat so that you are clearly encouraging others to go above and beyond rather than appearing to say that their work is ineligible. Thanks again for reminding me about my comments on nominations. Being too curt while trying to be concise may be a bad idea. And I'd like to avoid any appearance of abuse of admin powers. Some Wikipedians are very sensitive about their contributions and can be rather easily "ticked off" for the slightest thing in a comment by an admin, or an "admin-wannabee" one irate contributor recently wrote after an AfD on his article. (WP:VAIN was mentioned a few times, and that guy probably felt he was accused of being vain. Instead of reading the long VAIN guidelines, he went on a mini-spree of vandalism and personal attacks, getting himself banned. But that's another story.....) -- PFHLai 19:15, 18 April 2006 (UTC)

Hi there,

I'm fairly new to Wikipedia, and created a page called "Kingdom Life Church Melbourne", because it was not in Wikipedia. It is a new organisation.

However, I noticed you deleted it:

I'm sure you had a good reason for this, but I can't find any reasons posted anywhere. Can you tell me what I did wrong? Did I put it in the wrong category?

About Cite/cite.php

I am writing you because I note in the History for cite/cite.php that you have been active recently in developing that article and I am hoping that either you can answer my question or you know someone who can.

I am a Wikipedian who has written quite a number of chemical engineering articles. I have been using <ref name=whatever>some reference</ref> to define my references and then <references/> to get them displayed in the References section.

I notice that when I use a reference only one time, the vertical arrow in the Reference section listing is very thin and spindly and hard-to-see. But when I use a reference multiple times, the vertical arrow and the accompanying superscripts (a b c ..) are quite bold and really stand out well. My question is why can't the arrow for a single-use reference look just as bold and well-defined as the arrow for a multiple-use reference?

As an aside, I must say that Cite/cite.php at [1] needs to be completely re-written by a non-computer guru so that we ordinary mortals can understand it. It is virtually incomprehensible at the moment. - mbeychok 17:49, 23 April 2006 (UTC)

More about cite.php's poor rendering of reference arrows

If we look at the cite.php references in Tourette syndrome, they render as daggers and straight vertical lines, and they are all bold and well defined ... but they are at 80% font size. I changed them to 100% font size and then they looked exactly like the poorly defined vertical arrows I've been seeing on my IE browser. Look at these two screen shots of the Tourette references, one is using regular 100% font size and one is using 80% font size ==> image:Tourette references 100%.jpg and ==> image:Tourette references 80%.jpg

There is no question but that the font size changes the appearance entirely! Cite.php should abandon the arrows and go back to using the caret. - mbeychok 17:06, 24 April 2006 (UTC)

TIG welding

Referring to an earlier talk exchange we had ... after reading a lot, including what you've written here on WP, I finally bought a TIG welder, 160 amp, HF start, DC only, and a 20 liter/200 bar bottle of argon gas. 160 A is quite enough for welding 8mm copper rod to 3 mm copper-nickel, so I now have what I need to build my live steam boiler. The image used in Portal:Engineering/Intro

Hi, Spangineer:

The Portal:Engineering/Intro uses . Is there an image that is more representative of the engineering field than is a wrench and screwdriver? That image makes it appear as if engineers are no more than plumbers and apartment building maintenance service men. Somewhere, there must be something more representative.

I have searched through Commons without finding anything that "grabs" me. The Portal Directory lists your name as having created the Portal:Engineering/Intro which is what led me to post this query on your Talk page. I will watch here for your response. Licensing?

Hi Spangineer, I have some Penn State photos that I want to upload to Wikimedia Commons, but I am unsure what license to use. I saw what I thought was convincing argument to multi-license, but after checking out GNU Free Documentation License, I think that might be better.

I have some aerial views of Beaver Stadium I took that might look better cropped, but I can't decide. I'd like for somebody to be able to crop them, but not to be able to create a new work that might be licensed under something not compatible with Wikipedia. I thought I would ask your opinion about it.

Thanks. Here goes. First, I wanted to apologize. I was a little jealous of your IE article, and that might have been reflected on some talk pages. I took some time out to read Wikipedia articles, policies, guidelines, and to get a clue. Now I look at the IE article and appreciate how skillfully constructed it is. The way you used comments to make the refs easier to see was really clever for example.

While not actively editing for a while, I came across an article about a famous politician in my hometown, Frank Rizzo. The article is in need of improvement, and is marked for POV. I was compelled to begin researching improvements to the article, to the exclusion of most everything else.

I'm working offline on a significant re-write and expansion. Periodically, I preview it in my Sandbox, but I haven't saved it, because it's not ready. I've found sources for most of the statements, gotten rid of incorrect statements, and rewrote it to be far more neutral. I still have some more referencing to do, and a few more life events to talk about. In no particular order, problems and questions are:

• Article size: I'm getting the 30K warning now, and I still need to add in some more references in addition to content. I know 30K isn't a hard upper limit, and I'm making a real effort to make every word count. I've read WP:SIZE. I don't know if I should keep going and add everything I want into it, or treat 30K as the upper limit. It's possible that the article about the politician will be at least as large as the city article.

• POV: The version I am working on is significantly different than the present version. I know that people can check the edit history, but I'm concerned people will see the POV check template and associate it with the new version of the article. I'm not sure who would make the call the article is POV-free. The person who placed the tag, consensus, me? I don't really want to start a huge deal about it, I just want to improve the article.

• Should links to Wikiquote and Wikitionary be inline refs, footnotes, or doesn't matter?

• Are iconic photographs of a subject, those seen widely as often associated with an individual or event, permissible to use, or are they still subject to copyright?

Misc Stuff:

• I also wanted to say, I hate you for putting the idea of Wikimedia Commons in my head. :) Now I have more work to do, taking pictures, uploading them, renaming them, etc. I forgot about some of the Penn State photos I had until yesterday. I think they compliment what was already there quite well.

• There is a request to populate the category Cheerleading organizations. I think a Penn State Cheerleading article would be appropriate, and I wouldn't mind eventually writing that article. Do you think they are notable enough?

• Hi, finally posted the Frank Rizzo article at Frank Rizzo/rewrite, please take a look at it whenever you get a chance. I was working a couple of other things and forgot about it for a while. One thing was a Penn State stub, I posted it on WP:WSS/P#Proposals, May 2006, people commented on it, and the 7 day waiting period is over. I'll post on the PSUproject page once I have the stub template wherever it is supposed to go next. Right now I have it in my Sandbox. Other questions if you don't mind:

• I've been uploading images to Commons. Some are huge (~1.7M). I can't find a restriction on size anywhere. Is there a limit?

• I've been working on Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. I figured with opening day about 2 weeks away I should flesh it out. Is there anything I have to do to get it posted as a current event on June 20? I also have enough pictures to make up a good gallery for Commons, but some of the file sizes are huge (see above), so I wasn't sure if I should post more. I walked around the perimeter and took pictures becuase you never see pictures of Medlar from the back.

• And my last question, is University Park, Pennsylvania supposed to be the article for University Park campus? The other campuses have articles, but I noticed some of the main campus building are broken out with there own articles, so I wasn't sure. Thanks. RockinRob^Talk 23:11, 4 June 2006 (UTC)

Six Sigma

Hi Spangineer, you have been heavily involved with creating the Six Sigma page. Currently there is a sort of an edit war going on between two users Slocum1946 and BezLocu. Map drawing

Hi Hlj, I saw your Battle of Gettysburg maps, and wow, I'm impressed. I'm working on an article right now that needs a map, and I was wondering if you had any pointers. How did you go about drawing it? Just copying existing maps as best you could? And then you used layers for the various components (roads, troop lines, forests, etc.)? I've never attempted to draw anything like this where precision is important, so I'm curious as to how I should go about doing this. I usually trace maps, essentially. I copy in via JPEG or scanner and then draw over, using multiple layers, as you suggest. I use Macromedia Freehand because I happened to have a cheap copy of it, but I'd suggest you use Adobe Illustrator if you want to share work with others. My key insight was to use a tool in the program that allows you to draw a line by successively clicking on points, rather than the superfussy bezier-like drawing tools. So my rivers and roads have slight jagginess, but I work at a large scale (like 14x17in) and it's not too noticeable. Good luck. Hal Jespersen 18:49, 24 May 2006 (UTC)

I don't know of alternative programs, sorry. There certainly may be some, but I don't know. On sharing, I put the source files of my maps on my website (http://www.posix.com/CWmaps/) in case someone wants to modify/edit the PNG version that's on Wikipedia. No one has as of yet, but... Operation Auca

Hi RJ, thanks for your comments on the peer review of Operation Auca. You mentioned that a map might be useful, so I drew one and added it to the article. It doesn't specify the regions where the Huaorani lived, because they were rather nomadic, but it does help the reader get an idea of the respective locations of the places that the article mentions. If you get a chance, let me know what you think.
