Please don't be taken in by Timmy12

  • He's been removing citations from multiple pages: [1], [2], [3], [4], [5], [6], [7], [8], [9]
  • These citations exist because other editors insisted that they needed a citation.
  • He has an outstanding checkuser request with strong evidence that he is a sock of Mattisse: [10]
  • Both users have followed Rosencomet around and used tagging, citations requests, and now removal of the citations provided to harass said user.

Ekajati (yakity-yak) 22:00, 25 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

No problem. Mattisse and her puppets are very good at mock tears over how mean WP is to her. Which of course is b/c she is tagging articles by the metric truckload.... and doesn't get why multiple unrelated editors are annoyed with her. Thinks it's a conspiracy. Soon to be permabanned, I suspect. Ekajati (yakity-yak) 22:07, 25 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

The vandalism warning is back on my page after you removed it

This time there is a list of articles, each one I removed the commercial link from. Is this behavior that I can be blocked for? These people have harassed me since I joined Wikipedia on September 8. Take a look at my talk page. The harassment is preventing me from functioning here, but I don't know what to do. I have an incident on Administrators' borard Harassment by Hanuman Das and Ekajaki.

However, the same person who refused to remove the warnings from my page, just before you agreed to do so, just wrote on my complaint that I should take it somewhere else. But where? How does a person handle long term chronic harassment that will not stop? Timmy12 23:49, 25 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

If you think you're being wronged, mediation or RfC. Otherwise, I don't think anyone will mind if you archive the warnings -- Samir धर्म 00:04, 26 October 2006 (UTC)Reply
A kind person actually read the edits listed as vandalism and saw they were fine edits. What a great guy. No, if I had archived them User:Ekajati would surely have had me banned. He and User:Hanuman Das would have seen to it. It is a rare person around here that is willing to stand up to them for some reason. I don't quite understand it but it is true. Even you left an apology on his talk page. Maybe they actually own the place! Timmy12 00:30, 26 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Ryan Sugden

Please take another look at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Ryan Sugden. The 'votes' were evenly split so this should have been a no concensus unless there was a strong balance of argument in favour of delete. This was not the case - the guy has played for Oldham Athletic in the English Football League and so meets WP:BIO as Sportspeople/athletes/competitors who have played in a fully professional league ... Articles about first team squad members who have not made a first team appearance may also be appropriate, but only if the individual is at a club of sufficient stature that most members of its squad are worthy of articles.. He meets both parts of this guideline. BlueValour 01:48, 26 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Hi BlueValour, this was a difficult call but a clear delete based on the arguments. I always suggest a deletion review for any delete call that I make that is questioned. In my opinion, notability rested on the argument raised that he was a trainee at Oldham (where he started 5 times in 4 years) and that all of his other starts were in semi-professional leagues. This was not refuted in the AfD and was backed by the soccerbase link. The question is whether someone who was a trainee on a professional team makes the WP:BIO cut that you've summarized above. I didn't think so based on the arguments. -- Samir धर्म 02:26, 26 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

"Was asked to intervene here. Could you please let me know (1) what Rosencomet is and (2) what the affiliation of ACE is with Rosencomet? By that, I mean Rosencomet the organization, not the person. Thanks -- Samir धर्म 02:32, 26 October 2006 (UTC)"Reply

Well that's pretty easy to answer Samir. Association for Consciousness Exploration: "The organization was founded in 1983 by members of the "Chameleon Club", an "extended-family" group created by their Founder, C. C. Rosencomet". See also [11]. You think this should go to AFD? --kingboyk 12:34, 26 October 2006 (UTC)Reply
Rosencomet states he is the exec director [12]. of ACE and also writes that Jeff Rosenbaum is exec director [13]. I'm not clear regarding what privacy issues there might be, however, does Jeff Rosenbaum article warrant an autobiography tag? --BostonMA talk 13:35, 26 October 2006 (UTC)Reply
Not entirely sure either, but I doubt it. The ACE was founded by somebody called Rosencomet. A user of the same name claims in a public forum to be an executive director of ACE. It's quite reasonable to assume that the user is therefore claiming to be Mr/Ms Rosencomet, and I've tagged the talk page to reflect that. It's probably not reasonable to extend that to Mr Rosenbaum's article, unless I've missed something. It's not hugely important anyway, at least not as important as getting neutral, balanced articles on encylopedically notable subjects. --kingboyk 15:38, 26 October 2006 (UTC)Reply
I was trying to get to the bottom of these ACE links for festivals from Rosencomet.com. If Rosencomet is the organization that runs ACE or hosts the ACE festival infomation, then the references are valid. The question now turns to whether all these performers need references to having performed at ACE events -- Samir धर्म 00:23, 27 October 2006 (UTC)Reply
Hi Samir. We seem to see this a bit differently. My thinking is that WP:V says regarding sources:
Articles should contain only material that has been published by reliable sources.
...Anyone can create a website or pay to have a book published, then claim to be an expert in a certain field. For that reason, self-published books, personal websites, and blogs are largely not acceptable as sources.
...Self-published material may be acceptable when produced by a well-known, professional researcher in a relevant field or a well-known professional journalist. ...so long as their work has been previously published by reliable third-party publications.
Perhaps I am seeing things incorrectly, but my impression is that rosencomet.com does not qualify, and that the sources that should be used should be newspaper and magazine articles and the like. Please let me know if you think I am missing something here. Sincerely, --BostonMA talk 01:15, 27 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

On a related issue, looks like the checkuser for some users on the other side of the debate came up mostly negative, which is good to know. Also, my edits to the ACE articles seem to have stood up for now, so I won't be taking any further part unless called on. I know you guys can handle it :) --kingboyk 11:44, 27 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Just to let you know, the ACE editors have taken your general opinion about the validity of references and are waving it about as blanket permission to add their links willy-nilly. [14], [15] --Calton | Talk 23:41, 27 October 2006 (UTC)Reply
Whoa. That's not exactly what I meant. What I said was that IF Rosencomet hosts the official web site for the Starwood and WinterStar festivals, it's a valid reference for saying that someone played at the festival. (1) It is still an IF (I haven't read User:Rosencomet's response here yet) and (2) We're not sure it's of relevance all of these performers played at these festivals. -- Samir धर्म 23:46, 27 October 2006 (UTC)Reply
I've been discussing the issue with BostonMA here
Septegram 05:41, 28 October 2006 (UTC)Reply
Yes, rosencomet.com is the official website of the Association for Consciousness Exploration, Starwood Festival and WinterStar Symposium. Ekajati (yakity-yak) 17:44, 30 October 2006 (UTC)Reply
But now in the rewritten article, Association for Consciousness Exploration has a fictional founder, C. C. Rosencomet. He was invented. Is there anything real about Starwood, WinterStar and ACE except their website, which we know exists? Is there a real (verifiable) person that takes responsibility for it, like an owner, chairperson or business manager? Who pays the webhosting bills? Who gets the money in the end? Timmy12 02:33, 2 November 2006 (UTC)Reply
Give it up, Timmy, you're getting tedious. Try reading the whole article - it gives the names of the directors. Try doing a WHOIS on the domain, it gives the name and address of the guy who pays the bills. With Monopoly money of course, to a fictional domain registar. :p Ekajati (yakity-yak) 16:08, 2 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

A biopsy for diarrhea...

Hi Samir:

I'm in Ottawa at the moment... doing an elective. :) I have a GI-specialist question for ya.

I understand that for IBD there are clear guidelines for the number of biopsy specimens.[16] That said, for run-of-the-mill diarrhea NYD, there does not seem to be any consensus (... looks like a possible research project to me):

"Biopsy specimens should be obtained from the colon in patients with chronic diarrhea.
... [p]atients with microscopic colitis... may have normal-appearing mucosa at colonoscopy. The diagnosis requires biopsy of otherwise unremarkable-appearing colon. All patients undergoing colonoscopy for the evaluation of chronic diarrhea should have biopsy specimens obtained. The optimal number and location of biopsy specimens is not established." [emphasis added]
Rex DK, Petrini JL, Baron TH, Chak A, Cohen J, Deal SE, Hoffman B, Jacobson BC, Mergener K, Petersen BT, Safdi MA, Faigel DO, Pike IM; ASGE/ACG Taskforce on Quality in Endoscopy. Quality indicators for colonoscopy. Am J Gastroenterol. 2006 Apr;101(4):873-85. PMID 16635231. Available at: http://69.20.67.254/media/asgejoint/QualityColonoscopy.pdf.

How many samples would you routinely take in a colonoscopy for diarrhea that is not suspected to be IBD? Is there a minimum that you do and if so is there any sort of basis (i.e. you aren't popular with GI pathologists if you only give 'em one sample)? Thanks! Nephron  T|C 03:32, 27 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Many thanks for the detailed answer. In many ways it exceed what I expected. However, in another way it missed the mark a little-- in that I was most interested in the second part.
The questions above arose from the fact that a GI guy here took one sample from a patient with diarrhea. Being an overly keen student bent on EBM, I went searching for evidence that this is sub-standard care and unlikely to be diagnostically useful. Unfortunately, the best I could come up with is the above... which said there is no EBM for it.
What I meant by "...is there any sort of basis [for doing more than one site]" is:
I'm looking for is an article that is entitled something like "Principles of Good Biopsy Practise" to give the GI guy a "flogging a la literature".
Lacking good evidence, good flogging material would be a consensus statement (based on expert opinion) from something like the American Society of Gastroenterology or Canadian Society of Gastroenterology -- something I could suggest the pathologist here puts into the biopsy report to convince the ordering gastroenterologist that doing one site is like just biopsying the base of an ulcer-- it isn't likely to provide useful information or help the patient. I imagine this article ( McKenna BJ, Appelman HD. Primer: histopathology for the clinician--how to interpret biopsy information for gastritis. Nat Clin Pract Gastroenterol Hepatol. 2006 Mar;3(3):165-71. Review. PMID 16511551. ) covering gastritis (found via a Google search) is something like what I'm looking for-- whereas I cannot access the full text.
So, rephrasing the above... do you know any sort of guideline for biopsying a patient with diarrhea that succinctly makes the point? I found a nice one on Crohn's disease[17] but that would make for a convoluted argument. Perhaps a review paper on microscopic colitis has a suggestion...? Speaking of which, I think it makes sense to make microscopic colitis into a disambig-like page. Nephron  T|C 06:55, 28 October 2006 (UTC)Reply
You wrote:
I am assuming that the scenario in question involved normal endoscopy... [v]ery little literature on the subject of number of biopsies for this indication, but agree that it should be evaluated...
On the first part-- I don't think that is known to the pathologist, i.e. I don't think the requisition said anything other than diarrhea. On the second part, you've gotta get on that research project-- the one to figure-out what the ideal number of biopsies is. :-) As for the weather in Ottawa... it isn't too cold-- but it has been very rainy. Re: Rosencomet

Dear Samir,

You asked: Was asked to intervene here. Could you please let me know (1) what Rosencomet is and (2) what the affiliation of ACE is with Rosencomet? By that, I mean Rosencomet the organization, not the person. Thanks -- Samir धर्म 02:32, 26 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

It's a little hard to explain, but there is no organization called Rosencomet. When the ACE website was set up, the webmaster at that time decided to use the name rosencomet.com as a tribute to a running joke from the history of the group that gave birth to ACE. They were called the Chameleon Club, and their symbol was the Rose & Comet, a variation on the Discordian "Sacred Chao", itself a variation of the Yin/Yang. (Besides, even if ACE.com weren't taken, it would have led to a mountain of spam and mis-directed e-mail. Even Starwood.com would have confused ACE with several commercial ventures. ACE is not-for-profit.)

The pen name of anyone writing published material back then was C.C. Rosencomet (C.C. = Chameleon Club, Rosencomet = Rose & Comet), and that has been listed as the founder (actually, the Flounder) of the Chameleon Club ever since. I used the handle here in tribute to the same inside joke, never dreaming I was going to use it to do anything but revise, expand, and correct the ACE, Starwood Festival, and WinterStar Symposium articles. But I got hooked, as Virgos tend to do, and have created or contributed to about 100 articles since I started in August, revisiting them often to expand bibliographies, discographies, and other portions of them.

I hope you check out my side of this arguement on my discussion page. I truly have meant to be a contributor, and seem to have become a target of a few people, some of whom seem to only be interested in interfering with other people rather than creating anything themselves. If I can confidently be assured that the simple fact of a subject's appearance does not NEED citation, I'd be willing to dispense with many of the links I've introduced; they were a lot of work, as is the need to constantly revert the pages. But they were a reaction to individuals, I suspect some of the same ones, challenging the statements as needing citation in the first place. Also, I can't see what better source to cite than the curriculum (online or not) of the educational program itself. It's no surprise there isn't a newspaper article to cite; if a Nobel Prize winner teaches a course at a prestigeous university it's notable to both, but may not appear anywhere but in the catalog of that institution.

For the record, I do not run the rosencomet website in any way, shape or form, though I am one of the text contributors. I don't even know html. More info can be seen as part of the dialog between me and BostonMa on my discussion page. I welcome your advice on this and other issues. Rosencomet 16:15, 27 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Sounds like C.C. Rosencomet is straight out of the pages of The Illuminatus! Trilogy then :) Very interesting! --kingboyk 19:14, 27 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

University article

Hi Gdutmers. My suggestion would be to add the sports facilities to the article (i.e. Butler-Hancock Sports Pavilion and Nottingham Field under athletics. I wouldn't mention the residence halls again (most of them are already listed). That seems to be the norm with other university articles -- Samir धर्म 22:19, 25 October 2006 (UTC)

Yes, Samir, there is entirely too much information about boring facilities like residence halls and no information about our interesting facilities like performing arts venues, art galleries and athletic facilities. This will be a larger project than I first anticipated. Just so you know, I work on it in my spare time, when I'm not writing promotional copy for the university so changes will be sporadic in frequency. Thanks for your help. Please delete old version of image

Hi, I uploaded an image at Image:ChannakeshavaSomanathapuraPillars.JPG, but realized that the image I uploaded was not the one I wanted, so I uploaded a new version. The correct (later and lighter) version shows up correctly in the article Somanathapura. However, when one clicks on the image in that article, one gets the darker (older image) on the Wikimedia Commons page. Clicking on that image gives the lighter image again. I have received a complaint about this, but I have been unable to fix the problem using WP:Purge. Could you please delete the older version. Thanks. --BostonMA talk 15:35, 30 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Likewise; well done! And thanks for the star ! Laïka 20:32, 4 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

If I'm a bit pale in the face now,
it's because of the amazing support
during my recent request for adminship
and because of all those new shiny buttons.

And if in the future
my use of them should not always be perfect
please don't hesitate to shout at me
any time, sunset, noon or sunrise.

Ankit Fadia

Hi Smair. I was just about to revert when I saw that you were keeping a watch too. I am going to revert him. And leave a message on his talk page about the 3rr rule. The last afd had lot of vote stacking with a link to it's afd from Orkut. Also, there is a snowball's chance in hell that an afd on Ankit Fadia would return a delete verdict. - Aksi_great (talk) 07:41, 8 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Thanks

Hey Samir, thanks man... If only I knew how to build those fancy templates, the thank you messages would be much easier for me:) -- Lost(talk) 09:32, 8 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Crohn's disease

Hi there! I've been having a look at Crohn's disease and noticed you were the creator of Image:Patterns of CD.jpg, Image:Distribution of CD 2.jpg and Image:NOD2 CARD15.jpg. Would you mind if I vectorized these? The Image use policy stipulates that diagrams should be SVG whenever possible, or PNG otherwise. I believe these images add a lot to the article, and could benefit greatly from the conversion. [you may want to have a look at this diagram I vectorized for Enzyme and the raster original for comparison. Please ignore the shameless self-promotion :) ] If it's not OK with you, that's fine — otherwise, please let me know and I'll upload away. Thanks again, Fvasconcellos 23:32, 10 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Thanks. I'm working on them now and will upload as soon as I'm done. Fvasconcellos 14:11, 11 November 2006 (UTC)Reply
Done. BTW, I don't think the fonts you used on "Patterns of CD" will render on the embedded image. If you feel strongly about having those particular fonts I'll tweak the file to that end. Fvasconcellos 17:24, 11 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

RfC on Mattisse/Timmy12

Hello. Just letting you know that an RfC has been opened on Mattisse, here. As it provides strong circumstantial evidence that Timmy12 is a sockpuppet of Mattisse intentionally using two computers to evade checkuser, I thought you might want to comment. I don't really care what side you weigh in on, but I know you've been in a position to observe at least part of the situation and any view would be helpful. —Hanuman Das 11:16, 11 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

RFC on Mattisse (me) re Starwood & Rosencomet

I have just received notification that a Requests for comment/Mattisse has been opened against my behavior regarding articles related to Rosencomet and Starwood Festival. BostonMA talk suggested your name as a person who might be willing to make a comment on it. So I am bringing this RFC to you attention Thank you! Mattisse(talk) 14:20, 11 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Note from Editor's Desk
  • Welcome. It has been weeks and months since the idea of newsletter was mooted among the WikiProject India Community. This would be our first full-fledged edition of our Newsletter, and we'd like to start by saying we are very happy to have you among us.
  • This is your newsletter, and we want you to be part of it as well. Provide us with news tips here. It can be anything related to the project, from discussions to calls for help, and other interesting stuff within our community. If you have received or given any barnstars recently, do let us know.
  • Advertisements for recruitments within your WikiProject sub-groups are also welcome. We'll run special sections, and recurring columns in the coming issues.

  • Cartography Department (Shortcut:WP:INMAP): The Department of Cartography within the WikiProject India is a group of wikipedians who work on providing quality maps related to India. Their contributions gain more significance as we try to provide more information on places, districts and states of India. As a thumb rule, maps serve better if they are in SVG format. The location maps by the cartography department has helped us include location information based on latitudes and longitudes for a give place within India. The Indian Roadways map is a featured image, one amongst the few best road maps in the world. Still, there is more work to be done. There are 604 districts in India (see List of districts of India), and each district page needs a map of that district. You can help too. Contact the Cartography Department to learn how you can help in making the best maps in Wikipedia to be India-related!

Survey Q

It depents which outback steakhouse you've eaten at. If it's one in the northern hemisphere, no. it doesn't count, however if you ate at an Outback Steakhouse in the Southern hemisphere, yeah. It counts. Thanks and see ya later. AstroBoy 00:28, 13 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for your input!

Thank you for taking part in my RfA. The RfA was not successful, mostly because I did a pretty bad job of presenting myself. I'll run again sometime in the next few months, in the hopes that some will reconsider.

In the meantime, one of the projects I'm working on is A Wikimedia Administrator's Handbook. This is a wikibook how-to guide intended to help new administrators learn the ropes, as well as to simply "demystify" what adminship entails. If you are an administrator, please help out with writing it, particularly on the technical aspects of the tools. Both administrators and non-administrators are welcome to help link in and sort all of the various policies regarding the use of these tools on wikipedia in particular (as well as other projects: for example, I have almost no experience with how things work on wiktionary or wikinews). Users who are neither familiar with policy or the sysop tools could be of great help by asking questions about anything that's unclear. The goal is to get everything together in one place, with a narrative form designed to anticipate the reader's next question.

A second project, related but not entailed, is a book on wikimedia in general, with a history of how various policies evolved over time, interesting trivia (e.g., what the heck was "wikimoney" about?), and a history of how the wikimedia foundation itself came about and the larger issues that occurred during its history (such as the infamous "Spanish Fork").

Again, thanks for your input on the RfA, and thanks in advance for any help you might be able to provide for the handbook. --SB_Johnny|talk|books 13:25, 13 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Newbie questions

On irritable bowel page:

  1. Can/should I move pathophysiology and epidemiology into a separate page in order to shorten the IBS page?
  2. What should be done about content such as the 5 components of stress management that really do not seem to below on the IBS page?

Shiny new buttons

Two weeks ago I couldn't even spell administratur and now I are one (in no small part thanks to your support). Now that I checked out those new buttons I realize that I can unleash mutant monsters on unsuspecting articles or summon batteries of laser guns in their defense. The move button has now acquired special powers, and there's even a feature to roll back time. With such awesome new powers at my fingertips I will try to tread lightly to avoid causing irreversible damage and getting into any wheel wars. Thanks again and let me know whenever I can be of use.
