Tech News

• Because of the holidays the next issue of Tech News will be sent out on 8 January 2018.

Problems

• When you import a page from another wiki the usernames of the users who edited the article on the wiki you imported it from are shown in the article history. This should link to the users on the original wiki. A script to fix this caused problems for Wikidata and German Wikipedia. It also created a large number of SUL accounts on wikis where editors had never edited. [1]
• Some bot owners got email about their bots logging in from a new computer. If this is from one or a couple of wikis, you can turn these messages off in your preferences on those wikis until the problem has been solved. If not, you can report more about the problem in Phabricator.

Changes later this week

• There is no new MediaWiki version this week. There will be no new MediaWiki version next week either.

Meetings

• You can join the next meeting with the Editing team. During the meeting, you can tell developers which bugs you think are the most important. The meeting will be on 19 December at 19:30 (UTC). See how to join.

Future changes

• Files on Commons will have structured metadata in the future. The developers are now looking for examples of different kinds of metadata to make sure they are aware of them when they build prototypes for structured data on Commons. You can read more and help by giving examples of interesting media files.
• The Structured Commons team are making sure Commons work with structured data. If you regularly contribute to Commons and Wikidata you can answer a survey that helps the team prioritise the tools that are important for the Commons and Wikidata communities. • The 2017 Community Wishlist Survey has now ended. You can see the results. They decide what the Community Tech team will work on next year.

@Petersam: The guideline is just about the pixel area. DatBot just uses the Python Imaging Library to reduce the size to the biggest possible size that is under 100,000 pixels. No other factors are part of the reduction, the actual code line for reduction is

img = img.resize((int(basewidth),int(hsize)), Image.LANCZOS)

which is resize to the calculated height and width using full antialiasing (LANCZOS). I know we say low resolution - but wiki's "file resolution" is different to everyone else - in a search, the fileres: parameter is the square root of the pixel count! Happy holidays Ranhjones. I saw you added an "OTRS received" template to an image I took and uploaded for anyone to use. --It was originally intended to support the English Honda Ridgeline article, but a better option became available for the point being made in the article, so it's no longer used.-- Given this image is not currently being used, is there a problem with it being on Wikipeida? @McChizzle: It a classic problem, people send in pictures and NOT the commons URL - the OTRS team does not have the resources to find two imagea in the 250 million images. I found File:2017 Honda Ridgeline towing a Rockwood Mini Lite 2109S.jpg called in e-mail "side view towing.jpg", I have not found "front view towing.jpg" - The same subject but taken dead front on. Non-free reduce on John Hoskins (officer)

I'm concerned about the tagging this evening for File:JMHoskinsLifecover08141950.png. When I added the magazine cover, I'm sure I explained the rationale for non-free use satisfactorily. My concern is that the image is already quite low sized (206 KB) and the text of the image is barely readable at the current time (specifically the date and the subheading under the the name of the photograph, "Naval Air Boss in the Far East"). When I re-scaled this image before upload I was careful to scale down as far as possible, but still leave the text readable. I believe this is sufficient reason to avoid the arbitrary and automatic re-scaling proposed in the tag. Please consider removing the tag. Can I get another editors' view on this? Using the IMAGE RESIZE CALCULATOR linked on the Image reduce page, the target image resize is from 290 by 399 to the new size of 270 by 371. This change seems unnecessary, even by the standards demonstrated in the IMAGERES link. This seems like a very small difference, but I'm concerned about legibility as described above. I did several experiments while resizing to find the optimal minimum resolution, and I think I have it correct. BusterD (talk) 03:55, 6 January 2018 (UTC)

@BusterD: As WP:Image resolution says - you can have bigger, but make sure you explain why it's over 100,000 pixels in the rationale and then add {{non-free no reduce}}. You have done the correct thing, you have tried various sizes to get the smallest possible working size. It's not possible to have a guideline that works for every image, which is why that caveat it there. Naturally other editors cannot know the effect of being in guideline size until it's actually reduced - you already know what it would be like. FYI The reducing bot allows up to a 5% oversized image (i.e. 105,000 pixels), that was written into the bot many, many years ago - so someone decided way back to not to do very small adjustments. Recent changes

• On Wikidata, the "save" button when you edit is now called "publish". This means all Wikimedia wikis have now changed from "Save page" to "Publish changes". This is to help new editors understand what it does. [3][4]
• Some edits will get an automatic tag on all wikis. This will happen when making a page a redirect, blanking a page, removing almost all content, undoing an edit, or rolling back an edit. You can see the tags for example in the recent changes feed, article history, user contributions or on your watchlist. Some wikis had already marked edits like these in other ways. [5]
• Special:UnusedFiles shows files that have been uploaded but are not used. It will show a file that is not used on the wiki it has been uploaded to, even if the file is used on another wiki. The new Special:GloballyUnusedFiles page on Commons only shows files that are not used on any wiki. [6]
• Structured discussions now uses the 2017 wikitext editor instead of its old custom one. This will work with your preference for wikitext or visual editor. The documentation has been updated. [7][8]

Problems

• Older versions of the Chrome web browser on mobile devices may see the PDF download button, but it does not work. The developers are looking into the problem. [9]
• With the new filters in the recent changes, "Exclude selected" in "Namespaces" did not work for "Saved filters" between 13 December and 2 January. When you loaded the saved filter all other namespaces were excluded instead. This has now been fixed. If you made any changes to your saved filters between 13 December and 2 January, you need to save your filters with excluded namespaces again. [10]
• The latest version of Google Chrome broke how section links are shown in the address bar. You now see #R%C3%A9sum%C3%A9 instead of #Résumé even if MediaWiki did not encode it that way. This happened in early December. This problem has been solved. The fix will be in Chrome 64 (23 January) or Chrome 65 (6 March). [11]
• Some POST requests to the API took longer than usual in parts of December. This affected the Wikidata UI and some gadgets the most. It has now been fixed. [12]

Changes later this week

• Wikidata will be moved to its own database servers. This is because it is growing and needs more resources. Because of this you will be able to read but not edit Wikidata and the German Wikipedia between 06:00 and 06:30 UTC on 9 January. You might lose edits if you try to save during this time. This includes editing the language links on other wikis. [13]
• The font size in the editing window will change slightly for some users. It will now look the same on all browsers and operating systems. [14][15]
• The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 9 January. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 10 January. It will be on all wikis from 11 January (calendar).
• WikiEditor's ResourceLoader modules have been simplified to one: ext.wikiEditor. All the other modules are now deprecated aliases and should be removed. [16]

@Bubba73: Wiki does not care about KB - sometimes images get reduced and the size goes up. The guideline is <100,000 pixels. You can have bigger if necessary - you need to add {{tl:non-free no reduce} and a reasoning in the FUR. Remember non-free images are only for articles, has the view in the article deteriorated? Reduced size of MIB Group letter image

Hello Ronhjones,

Please explain why you requested for my image File:Medical_Information_Bureau_2017_No-Record_Letter_With_Redactions.png to be reduced in resolution? The whole point of this image was for readers to be able to read the letter from MIB Group. At the reduced resolution, it is unreadable and useless for the article (MIB Group) in which it is being used. I have posted a discussion in File_talk:Medical_Information_Bureau_2017_No-Record_Letter_With_Redactions.png. Based on your suggestions, I tried making 4 cropped pngs with Photoshop, then reducing 50% (text still readable), then combining into PDF. Wiki will describe that PDF as 562 × 750. still large, but not in the same league as the original png. Thanks for generating and posting that. One concern that I also have is how blind readers using Wikipedia with a screen reader would be able to benefit from the image. PDFs have the ability to be "searchable PDFs" by running optical character recognition on the text and embedding the recognized text, but the OCR is typically not perfect. Otherwise, I might be behooved to go through the grueling task of typing up the letter contents in the file description for the benefit of blind users. Using a PDF was just a proposal, but I'm still wondering what's really the best-known method here? I've probably come across similar material on Wikipedia like images of entire letters before, but I can't quite recall where they would have been. Wondering if perhaps we could solicit a recommendation from an expert on this and/or someone who may have dealt with similar material before? Thanks! --Wykypydya (talk) 17:08, 14 January 2018 (UTC)

@Wykypydya:I tried adding OCR, but it was not perfect on the full size version, and worse at 50%. I've only got Nuance Power PDF. It might be better with Acrobat Pro. Maybe the png is not a good basis to start (I do scans and PDF at work - we use black and white tiff from the scanner and Acrobat Pro - even then it can be hit and miss or the output quality.). I've seen plenty of PDFs on commons, in my view most are not OCR. Since it's a non-free image, one could ask at Wikipedia talk:Non-free content. Ronhjones  ^(Talk) 18:01, 14 January 2018 (UTC)

Okay, I went ahead and manually added all of the letter's text to the file page so that anyone can read it with standard Web browsing, including blind people using screen readers. I then also included the image in the article Fair Credit Reporting Act, so now there are two articles using the image. In that case, I suppose the remaining questions are whether the PNG file is still a suitable type for this image, and whether I have included the image in the articles appropriately. I see that if I increase the size of the image with the "thumb" or "frameless" argument and the "upright=scale" argument, then it scales in a "fixed" manner that can overwrite the left-hand Wikipedia navigation bar depending on the size of the browser window (and the screen size of the device that's viewing it). It would be nicer if the image could be "stretched" to fit the available width of the article in the browser window. Unless and until there's a solution to that, I'll leave it as a "gallery" thumbnail for now, and readers can read the letter by either viewing the included text on the file page or opening and zooming in on the image. Please let me know if that is workable as-is, or any other suggestions on how to further improve this! Sorry, how do you mean? Those rules don't appear to specifically prohibit using "non-free" images in "gallery" tags. Are you saying that the image needs to be included (inlined) as a "thumbnail" instead of as a "gallery"? Also, did I really properly classify the image as "non-free" under the circumstances (the letter is my own property even though it came from someone else, etc.)? If there is indeed such an issue with how I've included the image in the articles, can you please fix it or help me to fix it (at least now that we're hopefully past the issue of resolution and that this image can be on Wikipedia)? You have a license of {{Non-free fair use in}} - so that makes it a non-free image, and the image will therefore be listed in Category:All non-free media. WP:NFCC#8 says "Contextual significance" - so really it needs to be at the side of paragraph, and ideally mentioned within the paragraph. Most editors regard galleries as mere decorations to an article and not "Contextual significance". Ronhjones  ^(Talk) 21:19, 14 January 2018 (UTC)

Recent changes

• Bureaucrats on Wikimedia wikis where the Translate extension is installed can now add and remove the translation administrator permission by default. Administrators of wikis where this extension is enabled can add and remove this permission to or from themselves. Wikis that used a different configuration before have not changed. [17]
• There is a new Discourse test support channel for Wikimedia developers. You can ask questions or answer others questions about MediaWiki and Wikimedia software development. [18]

Problems

• Last week's MediaWiki update was rolled back. This was because of a bug that changed non-ASCII characters when a page was edited. [19][20]

Changes later this week

• The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 16 January. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 17 January. It will be on all wikis from 18 January (calendar).

The Battalion Drum and Bugle Corps logo

As per Wikipedia policy, the logo used for File:The Battalion Drum and Bugle Corps logo.png is the smallest available. Although it shows as rather large on the file page, In actual use in The Battalion Drum and Bugle Corps article's infobox, it is almost too small... GWFrog (talk) 02:55, 15 January 2018 (UTC)

@GWFrog: The size in the infobox is not controlled by the size of the image - it could be 5000 pixels wide, it has no difference. It's certainly not as small as possible on the image page. I'll have a play later and see if I can improve the article and bring the image page nearer the guideline, a manual tweak is often the best. Ronhjones  ^(Talk) 15:35, 15 January 2018 (UTC)

We'll leave image as it is - reducing text is always tricky, and even PhotoShop does not do well. As for the artilce - it always surprises me that editors add an infobox and then religiously remove all the unused parameters - other editors might not know those parameters exist (you can't guess them). After referring to Template:Infobox drums corps, there is a size parameter, I've added that and increase the image size to a reasonable value. Ronhjones  ^(Talk) 15:55, 15 January 2018 (UTC)

At one time (before this corps and its article existed), I had set the logos for all of the drum corps to approximately the same size on the infobox size parameter (generally eye-balled at 200-300 pixels)... Then, at some point, those parameters were all removed by an administrator as being unnecessary and contrary to Wikipedia policy... GWFrog (talk) 20:37, 15 January 2018 (UTC)

Vandalism in the article, Goguryeo

Hello

It was a long time since I asked for your help, but here I am again. I'm asking the same thing to several other administrators about the same matter at hand. About four months ago, the article Goguryeo has been protected due to vandalism, disruptive editing, and edit warring. After a couple of weeks after the protection was broken, two new editors started to vandalize the same article. To introduce you to the situation: they edited out the statements to misrepresent the cited sources, multiple credited sources were entirely removed, and original research has been included to substitute the removal. The two editor(s) in question are: User:Zanhe and User:Koraskadi I have been reverting the article back to the last editorial completed by User:Failosopher since the breakout of the situation.

The content that has been subject to this event are these two qualities:

1- "Goguryeo (고구려; 高句麗; [ko.ɡu.ɾjʌ], 37 BCE–668 CE), also called Goryeo (고려; 高麗; [ko.ɾjʌ]), was a Korean kingdom[4][5][6]"

The two editors mentioned above are constantly removing the bolded word; which goes against these three supporting articles cited.

States that Goguryeo as one of the three Kingdoms of Korea

The current article simply talks about its geographical location. However, the article stated that Goguryeo was Korean when it was retrieved.

2- "Goguryeo has been described as an empire by many scholars", "Goguryeo was a powerful empire and one of the great powers in East Asia"

Phrases in relation to the bolded word are getting removed alongside their supporting citations. This is a completely clear example of vandalism.

All these sources explicitly describe Goguryeo as an empire or have been described to have developed into an empire. In fact, the main thesis of the first two articles is about Goguryeo being an Empire. The same sources also state that Goguryeo is Korean, but they were not cited for the quality mentioned above for the current editorial.

The editorial that I have been reverting back into was the protected version; which was constructed by a series of discussions and debates with various editors and administrators including us. Something has to be done about the vandalists or the article in question. For the greater good, I ask you for your help once again, but I will decrease the burden by asking many others. Six months?

I think this was excessive. I had nothing to do with the edit-warring (in fact I only noticed because I was pinged in a conpletely separate "discussion" on the talk page), but it's pretty clear to me that at least one of the parties edit-warring has a very poor understanding of the relevant policies ("removal of cited sources" is not vandalism, etc.) and will need either to retract pretty much everything they said in their edit summaries and on the talk page soon or to be blocked; other than that this seems to be the same kind of routine dispute that has plagued pretty much every article related to ancient and medieval Korea since forever, and normally such disputes result in at most protection for a single week.

Apart from the length of the protection, you seem to have accidentally removed some maintenance tags that had been added by User:JzG long before the edit-warring.

Yeah, but look what happened in the immediate aftermath of your protection: two of the editors went to the talk page and started a back and forth about how I, an uninvolved user, had been wrong to blank an off-topic, racist rant by another (presumably) uninvolved editor four months earlier, and the closest thing the one who restored said racist rant has come to explaining what exactly their content dispute is about is below here on your talk page. Did page protection solve the problem last time? There doesn't seem to have been any discussion on the talk page at all, since, until my opening a new thread, the above-mentioned restored racist rant was the most recent, despite pre-dating the last page protection. This just looks like the sockfarm who have been owning the page for more than a decade will have to wait out a six-month protection period before continuing whatever it was they were doing.

Also, I don't know why, but your edit restored only one of JzG's multiple maintenance tags.

Hijiri 88 As I have mentioned before, the situation at hand was not about the matter of discussing the legitimacy and correlation of the sources; but rather was about dealing with instances of multiple cited sources being completely deleted, or statements being altered to contradict the original given sources. The editors who disagree with the original statement should not eliminate entire paragraphs by means of original research - but should be the ones to start the discussion on the talk page. I was not trying to prove an opinion about the article, but was informing the events that occurred within the page to other editors and administrators (detailing decstructive activity).

Also, who is this "one sleeper-SPA with a red-flag username"? This sounds like harassment. You have to define what "neutral" is, because apparently acknowledging and informing activities of multiple cited sources being completely deleted or statements being altered to contradict the original given sources is not neutral. This appears to be a deliberate attempt of falsely accusing someone to infringe one's integrity and liability. Fourthly, if one has a problem of the article (other then obvious reasons like articles having no co-relation to the statement), one must discuss it on the talk page and try to make a resolution conducted in legitimate reasons. It is clear to see that you are threatening me of 'blocking' me repetitively (under false charges). You are harassing WP:HAR me, Hounding WP:HOUNDING me in particular via a combination of deception. I contacted a handful of editors/administrators who have contributed to dealing with several unknown ID vandals (within the article Goguryeo). But once again you falsely accuse. This is a repetitive infringement of the WP:GF policy to say the least. Wikipedia has a No-Discrimination Policy WP:NDP, which you have infringed by stating that 'User Korean identity' is not reliable because he has "Korean" in his name. Reducing nominal SVG size

Many of your recent SVG uploads have been adding a lot of XML code garbage from Inkscape. For example, File:Baltimore Light Rail logo.svg was originally 2 KB and now is 92 KB, over 45 times as large. Some of the code added includes blocks starting with xlink:href="data:image/png;base64, which may have to do with image rasterisation? Either way, these large blocks of code probably should not be added. After looking at some of the new uploads, the previously fine SVG files are now W3C-invalid (which can be checked here), which is the wrong direction to be going in. If you are going to use Inkscape, maybe try saving files as an optimised SVG and checking the file size? Increasing the file size of SVG files should generally be avoided when possible, especially when the only purpose is to reduce the nominal display size. Cheers, S.A. @JoKalliauer:There is no separate guideline - we have a NFC guideline for all images. SVG images always make the wiki software generate a png image in the file description page based on the nominal size of the svg. Many of these png images are very large and way above what we would accept for a bitmap, and hence these files are tagged with a {{non-free reduce}}. Non-free images must be as small as possible - leaving a huge non-free png image on the file description page makes no sense. I don't know a quick way (maybe you do?) of easily changing the nominal page size, which is why we have no bot able to process these files, and hence they sit in Category:Wikipedia non-free file size reduction requests for manual processing for a very long time. If there is a viewBox in the SVG you just have to add height="316" width="316" as in File:AP-logo-Krakow.svg (compare 08:30, 25. Dez. 2017 with 20:33, 16. Jän 2018).

If there is no viewBox in the SVG then there has to be a height="value1" and width="value2" then change it to viewBox="0 0 value1 value2" and add add the width and height to be viewed: height="316" width="316".

That can easy be done with textreplace in a shellscript. (I can write it, but not now.)

How To Fix Copyright Issue on Gianni Blu Wikipedia Page

Assuming you wish to rewrite the bad sections - then click the third "[show]" link on the right hand side - a set of instructions follows showing how to create a temp sub-page and allowing rewrite. After the image c:File:Myntra logo.png - uploaded by User:P1nak1 was deleted, it was later uploaded by yourself. The similar user names and images lends one to think it's the same person. Fair use size

Hi. A fair number of my fair use images have been reduced in size. I can see that you're doing this in general and I m not being singled out, so absolutely no problem. I would just like to know for the future, to avoid this having to happen again, what the criteria is for size. Is it a linear dimension along one side, the area, or what? The guideline is at WP:Image resolution, and (since 2011) is 100,000 pixels. I think it might have been 300px on one side before that - not sure, so long ago. It is a guideline (and not a fixed policy), as sometimes an image gets badly corrupted at that size - for these cases the guideline explains that {{non-free no reduce}} can be added along with some reasoning in the FUR, to keep an oversize image. Although the guideline was set in 2011, there was no way of easily finding oversize images until the CirrusSearch engine was improved just over a year ago - and I have been slowing working through them since. If you are not sure about an image, or haven't the time to work out the correct size then just add the {{non-free reduce}} template - the reducing bots (two at present, they have a habit of stalling) will only reduce images that are needed to be done - if not required, they just remove the template. The bots allow a 5% oversize, so up to 105,000 pixels does not get reduced. Hope that all makes sense. Ronhjones  ^(Talk) 22:59, 10 January 2018 (UTC)

I was operating (for the most part) by the 300px/side guideline, but I will certainly keep 100K pixels in mind from now on, and tag those images which would make it harder for the reader at a smaller size. • Chiming in: I don't think File:Doomfist.png needed to be resized (275*399 = ~110k). 100k is an arbitrary number to ensure fair use protections for copyright holders. I appreciate your work on this in general, as many files need it, but it would be nice if your script/process became somewhat more tolerant.   • @Czar: Possibly. 110k to 100k is unlikely to make any difference to the article's depiction. I would like to get to a situation where non-free images are either in the guideline OR in Category:Non-free images tagged for no reduction, and thus no unknown "grey" areas - although there is already a defined tolerated oversize of 5%, where the bot will not reduce the image. Then (and only then) it will be far easier to search for the 50 or so oversized (over 105k, allowing for the bot system) new non-free images that happen every day.     Since the purposes of fair use are dependent on the context and most editors won't know to add that specific category, it would make sense to add a toggle for that category/function to an existing fair use template (or else make a new template). I think it'd be reasonable to crank the tolerance to 125/130k, as that's usually an indicator that the uploader had made an effort to produce a low-res image to protect the copyright holder's commercial interests in higher-res production. czar 19:15, 13 January 2018 (UTC)

Agreed with the latter comment - I've just found many of my 110,000-ish have been reduced, when the B&W historic image file size is only 24kb to start with. When an infobox limits the first view, the availability of larger would help. Just add these as examples File:Tom Phillis on BSA Gold Star.JPG 108,800px and 23 KB reduced to 19KB - the person is, erm, soft focus whereas the bike is in focus . And File:Ernie Lyons.JPG similar size 108,756, 15kb -> 11kb - I'm going to have to start using a higher res/file size and smaller dimensions under the trigger-threshhold. • Hi Ron, I want to add my voice to those expressing concern here. I don't know how the particular size was chosen, but it's too small. How do we fix that? The latest image you wanted to shrink was File:William Hitchcock with boy and pony, c. 1900.jpg, which I had already made smaller than it needs to be, in anticipation of your arrival. The sign above the shop, the flags and the uniforms can't be seen clearly, which was the point of uploading the image, but you wanted it to be smaller still. And sometimes you arrive (manually, not with a bot) within minutes of the images being uploaded, which to be honest feels a little disturbing. @SlimVirgin: I can't control the times people upload files, I usually search for them about 7-8pm (UK). We don't have a notification system for reduction, but I'm thinking about something along those lines as there are 50 new well oversized non free images uploaded every day. Why in the world did you insert {{NOINDEX}} in the middle of the text of the template, instead of at the end near {{Non-free media}} where it would make more sense? I've always said that worrying about rendered size of SVGs is looking at it all wrong, it would be more relevant to look at level of detail. Who cares if a circle or a diagonal line can be rendered at 1000000x1000000 without jagged edges? But if you have a logo containing the coastline of France, for example, you don't need every minor inlet and peninsula coded in the SVG. You only need enough detail to render it suitably at an appropriate size. Anomie⚔ 20:07, 20 January 2018 (UTC)

Hi Ronhjones, Found you as one of the admins willing to userfy pages. One of my first and only articles, Ty Morse, was deleted earlier this year after a deletion discussion that focused on RS, most of the sources came from newspapers, and GNG, which seemed to be in a gray area. Ultimately, the admin deleted it, which was incredibly disappointing to me. As an inexperienced editor, I think I didn't have the right wiki-speak for the debate. Gooday Ron - we discussed signatures at User talk:Ronhjones/Archive 28#Copyright on Signatures three years ago (!), where you opined that copyright was life + 70 years. I have chanced upon this File:Jane Goodall signature.jpg using {{PD-ineligible}}. If this is correct, that is what I maybe should be using as the signature I had in mind of the deceased author I failed to make clear was a facsimile printed in a magazine produced in many thousands as a pledge of customer service in an advert: 'I promise that..........'. Since then I have obtained another mag of which he was editor with a different format of signature reproduced in the editorial section. Would be nice to stack these. If this file (above) upload is accurate, then I reckon it would apply to mine, since the works were public domain by dint of mass UK circulation of magazine titles. @Neosurya100: Network (2018 film) was a proposed deletion - the reason was Fails WP:NFF the coverage is not sufficient for a film yet to be released. @Hijiri88: Since one has been blocked, let's so a little softer to start with - indef PC, so easy to reject any new user's contributions and they are not live until approved, if that presents an issue, then it can be increased to semi (but plenty of editors often object to indef semi, no one seems to object to indef PC). I am the sole owner and copyright holder of all Starship 420 media. I have recently sent a copy of my copyrights to OTRS Ticket#: 2018012810003767 Trying to get this resolved as quickly as possible. The production is about to start back up in April so I am trying to get all my ducks in a row with all Web outlets. I apologize for the first Wiki being so short. we have a group this week coming in to fill in all the blanks for Starship 420 web presence. Please let me know what other steps (if any) that we should take to keep our media from being deleted.

@Merclove: You cannot upload files to commons once they have been deleted - the re-upload is quickly shown in c:User:SteinsplitterBot/Previously deleted files. The correct procedure is to request undelete at c:Commons:Undeletion requests. You will also find that nothing here or commons happens very quickly. I see that you removed some of the copyvios from the article Roman (Krassovsky), but actually it was riddled with copyvios and I should have been more comprehensive when I nominated it for speedy deletion. Have a look at this Earwig comparison and you will see what I mean. I guess you were reluctant to delete it because he is obviously a notable person who deserves an article. Recent changes

• Bureaucrats can now add and remove the accountcreator permission by default. This means the user can help create a large number of accounts, for example for an editathon. Wikis can change this if they want to. [29]
• The Wikidata vandalism dashboard is a new tool to monitor vandalism on Wikidata labels and descriptions. It is filtered by language. [30]
• Info pages for file pages now show the file's SHA1 hash value in the table of basic information. This is so users can see that the file is the same as the one they uploaded. [31]

Problems

• Special:Export has a higher error rate right now. This means that the export does not always work. You should check to make sure your page exports worked. The developers are working on fixing this. [32]

Changes later this week

• When you review an edit made with the visual editor you can check a visual diff of your changes besides the wikitext diff. If you pick one diff type it will remember and show you that in future. The visual diff will now be the type first shown to new users. [33]
• When you use a gallery to show images you can define the size, like gallery widths="150px". You could use em or % instead of px but it would make no difference. You can now only use 150px or nothing (150). If you write something else, instead of treating it like px, it will not work. [34]
• The wording when you send a thanks message will change. Instead of Yes or No it will say Thank and Cancel. It will also be easier to understand that all thanks are public. [35]
• Redirects connected to Wikidata can create double Wikidata items. There will now be a tracking category for this. Wikis that don't want it can disable it. [36]
• The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 6 February. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 7 February. It will be on all wikis from 8 February (calendar).

Ogri-esque

This keeps turning up and staring me in the face. I've been after a head-on shot of this bike with rider helmet-less (quite a well known machine and rider) for about 10 years since I didn't save it at the time, then I encountered this view used in a self-published book of anecdotes fairly recently. There's a slightly bigger image at Amazon that I can't link to. This appears to be circa 1962, I have a seriously updated version in a 1964 mag, then there's another 1966 (same publication) that's on me 'wish list'. It's called Vin/Nor, with the legend on the tank as a jagged lightning-bolt (where I have used a slash). I used to work for a millionaire who had several cars for different purposes - hot hatch for shopping/dog walking in the woods/leave at the pub when well-fuelled, long distance cruiser, classic car, sports job. A couple of Lotus Elans (60s/70s Ford engine based) - collector's pieces, they were known as.
