Signpost search edit

I don't know whether you already know this, or whether you might be interested, but {{Google custom}} can search the Signpost and its archive pages. I suggested adding some search links here:

I use this particular search in the course of answering Help desk questions, when I recall some Signpost article that pertains to someone's question, and I want to look it up. I thought you might find it useful. Some users found similar searches useful on the FAQ and Village pump. Image:WikipediaSignpostHead.svg edit

Hi, I noticed you uploaded a new version of Image:WikipediaSignpostHead.svg, which I noted with thanks. However, today I noticed that although you wrote "(Complete re-working of prior SVG from scratch. My efforts go into the public domain.)" and "Remade from scratch by Ral315 using the "Certificate" font." it actually matches dot for dot with my new version, labeled as "crisper version" which was made using the Wedding Text font, not the certificate font.

Compared to the Wedding Text version, it has the same number of nodes, and the nodes perfectly line up. When I made the "crisper version" I had checked and I can tell you that Wedding Text and Certificate do not line up so perfectly.

Which makes me suspect that your version was not a re-working from scratch, but was based on my work. Can you explain this? Thanks. --Kjoonlee 14:16, 22 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Exposition edit

Hi, me again. Would it be possible for you to do an exposition on a wikiproject. DO you know what I mean? A reporter,such as myself, would go to a wikiproject. Like that of Led Zeppelin or the Beatles or any active wikiproject, and write a story on them. The subject would of course be chosen by you or anyone who is somewhat high up in the paper, if an inactive project was chosen, then it would probably help garner support for that particular project. I think it is a good idea, and the reason I haven't posted it on the tip line as of yet is because I thought it would besomewhat quicker if I were to go straight to the editor in cheif. Therefore I think it would benefit a lot of readers if you linked to the edition from your edit summary e.g. "Signpost delivery using AWB" rather than "Signpost delivery using AWB". Planned future articles for Signpost edit

Hi. Thanks for the Signpost. I'm wondering about getting an article (or two) planned for a future edition. I'm planning an event for June and wanted to know what I need to do to get an article in there. Can anyone write it? There will likely be an advanced copy for review if you need such information. Likely, if we pull this off, you'll want to cover it during and after like you would any other event happening around this place. You can go to Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Image Monitoring Group#Wikipedia Image Cleanup Month .28June.29 to see what's being planning. If it's as simple as "write the article, we'll stick it in" that's great. If there are some guidelines to writing an article (layout, format, length, tone, whatever), it would be nice to know that in advance as well. Thanks for any information you can provide. RSS feed for Signpost (again) edit

I know this has been discussed before. I have some observations to which you might like to add confirmations, corrections or more detail:

  • It appears to me that your publication process for Signpost articles is finalized by the move to something like Wikipedia:Wikipedia Signpost/DATE/NAME where DATE is the nominal publication date and NAME is a page name related to the name of the Signpost article.
  • The article title is a HTML "h2" element.
  • The By-line directly follows the title and is a HTML "small" element, containing wikitext including Wikipedia Usernames.
  • Typically, there is no subheading in a Signpost article
  • Typically, there is no summary in a Signpost article.

If this is the case, it seems to me that the title, guid, pubDate, author, and link elements for a set of RSS feed items would be easy enough to extract. Per SandyGeorgia's comment I'd say you really need to assign the "2,000th" to one article. Sure, picking this one is a somewhat arbitrary decision - but it is one where there's an interesting story behind the article. For future milestones (eg 2,500) you might want to consider promoting articles one at a time so you can unambiguously say "X" it the nth FA. This may smack of Cabal-esque behaviour and there are going to be some contributors disappointed in how you go about this, but picking an article which is useful for press purposes is something I feel should be taken into consideration. --Brian McNeil /talk 08:24, 11 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Signpost backups? edit

Hi Ral.

I noticed that every week, the Signpost seems to get farther and father behind. I know there are many reasons to this, but one of the biggest is due to regular stories not being written, and the editor in chief (currently you) being busy. I was thinking we could have a backup system for all the regulars, and an assistant editor in chief, so we can get it out on time earlier. Ever since I saw the Signpost, honestly, I thought it could use an overhaul, made easier to get it out on time. Could you give me comments on that? I was let down twice by a project, so I had to compromise, so I asked a few of the members of the BRC (who were online at the time) what they would think about a Signpost report.   • Ral, please just state in a visible place (ie. not the page history) that you are aware of the story. There seem to be several camps at the moment: (1) Those who think the Signpost will completely ignore this until there is something more to report (ie. a replacement or further news); (2) Those who think the Signpost will over-report this and do an in-depth report; and (3) Those who think the Signpost will just state the bare facts of the departure and no more. But that discussion will come later. This is about clumsy attempts to forestall human nature. At the moment, you (and others) are merely removing notes people are leaving. There have been at least three independent notes left for you about this: 1 and removal, 2 and removal, 3 and removal. This is not about respecting a departed user's wishes, and it is not about self-censorship either. This is about you communicating with those wondering what the Signpost will say. A short statement from you on those pages, saying that you are aware of the story, and are prepared to discuss by e-mail, will stop further notes - just saying this in the edit summaries is not getting the message across. Didn't want to leave it on the tip line page, regarding the recent retirement, and feel free to delete it here as well. But we are trying to get together a collaboration on Learned Hand, arguably the most important judge in the history of the US not on the Supreme Court, in honor of the recently retired. If you think that would be worth mentioning, I think those of us involved would welcome the help. The subject is an important one, as I've found out in the past few hours, and bears certain positive characteristics of our recent retired arbitrator, as well. Anyway, just an idea. While I agree I am expalaining it poorly, but it is used, from what I can determine, across the various sports projects. It's a game in progess, and it doesn't need to be updated until completed. A similar problem happened back in the 2006 World Cup of Football/Soccer, to use an example, and the consensus was not to update any matches until after they were completed. Thanks for your reply. I'd like to have known beforehand that admissability of (even Commons) images was going to be an issue, since it took quite a while to locate suitable ones, to write captions and to integrate them into the text. I don't think three images in such a substantial text is clutter. The middle one (of high-school children using computers) is the least beneficial, IMO, but even then, it balances the university-weighted approach in the text with possibility that younger students might be included. The top image is beautiful, and has never been used anywhere. I believe that it makes a plain read more attractive. It is directly relevant to the topic, although not strictly necessary; however, the caption gave the chance to drive home an important point in a short, punchy way. I wanted to personally thank you for taking part in the project-wide discussions regarding my candidacy for bureaucratship. After bureaucratic discussion, the bureaucrats decided that there was sufficient significant and varied opposition to my candidacy, and thus no consensus to promote. Although personally disappointed, I both understand and respect their decision, especially in light of historical conservatism the project has had when selecting its bureaucrats. Hi there. Since I've made a big deal of this over on Wikinews, it is only makes sense that I should inform you of my concerns with this article here. Part of the article, in particular the paragraph starting "On May 5", uses information obtained from a confidential OTRS ticket which has been made public by an OTRS volunteer in violation of OTRS rules. As such I've suggested that this paragraph be removed from the Wikinews article and now make that same suggestion here. It is inappropriate that we should be including such information as to do so would be to condone the violation of OTRS rules. Signpost coverage for an event edit

I'm preparing to run a big competition to start in a couple of months. It will focus on the development of over 200 drafts, to be transferred to article space when completed.

It would be ideal to have the competition covered in the Signpost, including an announcement of the contest before it starts, reporting of monthly winners and the current champion, effectiveness of the collaboration, overall impact, etc.

Though I don't know what to expect of the Signpost, or what the proper procedures or requirements are to get an event like this covered, etc. So I'm contacting you in advance to find out.

Any information or direction you could provide would be most appreciated.

Curious (cross-namespace redirect) edit

Hi Ral

The draft is complete; wouldn't mind feedback from a few folks when they wake up, but it's in reasonable shape already, I think.

Two issues: (1) There are four pics, all of them illustrating different categories of featured sound, directly related to actual FSs. Is this too many? They seem to align neatly, and we want to give readers a sense of the possibilities (frankly, FSC needs a boost and has significant potential). (2) Zginter put himself down as co-author at an earlier stage, but really, there's little text by him. I think the acknowledgement at the bottom is better, if anything at all. Ral, I don't know what happened here at all. The ball was completely dropped this week because I'm traveling, and Tony kindly scrambled to pick up the ball and write an article in a day. I have limited internet access, but there's a problem now: there are two versions, WP:FCDW/May 26, 2008, where the article should be since the Signpost hasn't yet been published, and another article at Wikipedia:Wikipedia Signpost/2008-05-26/Dispatches. Perhaps Tony created the Signpost version with a cut-and-paste, rather than waiting for you to move it, and in the meantime another editor continued to edit the temp version. Don't know how to fix it, I don't have admin tools, or I'd move everything to the right place and figure it out. Sorry, must frustrated :/ SandyGeorgia (Talk) 02:38, 29 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
