Teahouse help

Hey Nthep,

A user has started demanding an article layout be changed according to his desire against the vote of everyone else who has reverted the changes. It is really odd. I am a new user and have no idea how to handle the situation. And is this type of thing a regular occurrence? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:List_of_people_who_have_been_called_a_polymath

Help on a photo

Hi Nthep, Could you help me out with a question I have with regards to why 'File:Penmaen-Bach mountain from Dwygyfylchi road.jpg'. It's a photo of a mountain taken from Google earth- Street cam. The photo in question replaced a previous photo on an article which by the way was also from Google earth- Street cam but the old photo had a side shot of a road sign in it. The new photo is up for deletion but the older photo wasn't deleted (even though that was also from Google earth- Street cam and ahd been there a good while). Any help would be helpful. OST, the issue with the images you've uploaded is that they are capable of replacement by a free image. Note that the criteria is capable of being replaced by a free image not that one actually exists at the moment. So unless the mountain isn't there any more, anyone could take a trip out to North Wales, take an image and upload it here with a free licence. That's the case with the image you replaced (File:Penmaen Bach from the Dwygyfylchi road - geograph.org.uk - 1772532.jpg) - it's not from Google Earth but from Geograph where it was licenced for free use, hence it's transfer to here. I agree with you it's not as good a photo as the ones you found but more importantly from wikipedia terms of use it is free. NtheP (talk) 13:53, 12 January 2013 (UTC)

Ok. Thanks for the warning. I'm planning to replace the copyright tag under Licensing but unfortunately I don't know how. Could you show me the steps of how to do it or make a link from where the article about it in Wikipedia? I can't find the article of how to change the license anywhere on Wiki. I think if I change the copyright tag to [Non-free architectural work|image has rationale=yes] then the copyright would make alot more sense on the photo of Dubai City Tower. This is the first time I ever upload photos on Wikipedia so I am still getting used this. Wethar555 (talk) 22:05, 12 January 2013 (UTC)

That's fairly easy. Go to the image, delete the current contents (including the warning template I added) and add the following (cut and paste)

North Staffs Regt – W.D. Stamer

Hi. I've been through the 1st/2nd Battalions history for mentions of Stamer, with the following results:

• p. 2: he is not included in the list of officers who embarked with the 1st Battalion for France on 8 Sept 1914: he must have gone out later.
• p. 55: his first mention is in the list of 1st Bn officers who took part in the Third Battle of Ypres (July 1917). Listed as "Captain W.D. Stamer, Brigade Intelligence Officer". No further details: I imagine that means he was attached to Brigade HQ, rather than being with the Battalion itself?
• p. 65: Account of two raids made by the Battalion on 6 and 7 Dec 1917. "It should be mentioned that before these raids took place Captain W.D. Stamer had taken up the duties of Adjutant vice Captain P.D. Harris [my grandfather], who was attached to 72nd Brigade Headquarters."
• Several mentions in the chapter on the Battalion's experiences in the German offensive of March 1918. p. 70: On 20 March, with the Battalion in the front line, intelligence was received that the offensive would begin the next day. "In spite of this there were still some Officers who did not believe that the Battalion would be seriously involved, and Colonel Pope [ Vyvyan Pope, C/O] and Captain Stamer had a bet on the subject, the former having the satisfaction of collecting Frs. 100 later on, when both were in hospital together." (It's fairly obvious that Pope was the source of much of the information in this chapter.) The attack did indeed begin on 21 March: the forward three companies were practically wiped out, and Pope was badly wounded. p. 74: The Germans advanced on Battalion HQ, lying behind a wide trench known as the Red line, "which was now commanded by the Adjutant, Captain Stamer. ... Captain Stamer most gallantly turned a machine gun on them [the enemy], and when all its crew had been hit he took it himself, only to fall back hit in the head by a bullet which penetrated his steel helmet. In spite of his wound Captain Stamer continued to command, and indeed to inspire the whole defence. ... Very severe fighting went on for some time, but when the whole of one machine gun crew had been knocked out and one of the Lewis guns had jammed hopelessly, Captain Stamer ordered a rush to be made to try and clear the enemy out of the sunken roads and mounds. This was done successfully at the point of a bayonet, but the party came under heavy enfilade fire from the right (south) flank and could not hold on, so shortly before mid-day Captain Stamer decided to withdraw in the direction of the Verman-Maissemy Road."
• p. 86: 2 July 1918 (by which time the decimated Battalion had been re-formed with fresh troops): "Captain W.D. Stamer, M.C., returned to the Battalion and took over the duties of Adjutant from Captain D.C. Butterworth."
• p. 87: 17 Sept 1918: "Captain W.D. Stamer took over the duties of Second-in-Command, Lieut. D.C. Butterworth succeeding him as Adjutant." (Note that Butterworth seems to have been demoted: the book is full of odd little slips and inconsistencies of this sort!)
• Chapter on the Battalion's involvement in the Battle of the Selle. p. 92: 13 Oct 1918, heavily engaged near Montrecourt: At 11 a.m. Lieut.-Colonel Hodson [H.V.R. Hodson, C/O] was wounded, and Major Stamer, M.C., took over command." p. 94: preparations for the major assault to begin on 4 Nov 1918: "The 1st North Staffords had a fighting strength of 17 Officers and 432 other ranks, and were commanded by acting Lieut.-Colonel W.D. Stamer, M.C.." No further mentions, but presumably he remained in command through the Battalion's subsequent advances and up to the Armistice.

I think that's everything, though the book isn't indexed, so I may have missed something. In particular, I've found no mention of his being awarded his MC (and the book does generally try to record significant decorations): from the details here it looks as if it might have been for his actions in March 1918, but if you're confident it was 1917 perhaps it was when he was attached to Brigade. No photos, I'm afraid (there aren't many in the book: most of the illustrations are uncontextualised and pretty incomprehensible terrain and trench maps). But I hope you can use some of that. Your non-Answer to my question in the Teahouse!

Life's too short for this

This is to do with a problem with the graph chronology for next UK election. Note: when a small image appears, hover over it with your mouse to read the complete the sentence. Ok, so this page has always had a chart but due to the continuous updates with the addition of new polls the chart needs updating every once in a while. This has meant that there are now an abundance of unwanted/out of date files on wikipedia, which should really belong in the chronology of the . As you can see from the chronology all is well for the chronology of that page until it stops at May 2012, the final update. The next image to be uploaded was a , this chart and the were used simultaneously for a period. That is until the data for 2011 and 2012 was updated to the 30px|talk page to accommodate the new format (due to the addition of UKIP's column). This is a recent occurance. I was the one that uploaded the new data a few days ago, I also created a to see us through until we could get a new version of the favoured chart to cover May 2010-Present Day. A exists, this preceded my chart, it was made in error, I discovered the lines were too thick for interpretation, therefore this image needs to be deleted, as it is in effect a duplicate. I do not know how to delete this image, or suggest deletion, can someone help/delete it for me? I'll see to it that there are comments on that page. Since my chart was uploaded, I have uploaded the data to the talk page, for User:Wavehunter to update the chart that preceded mine to include the data from 2010 and 2011. The reason for this is that Wavehunter's chart was the one that had consensus. In the meantime Impru20 has uploaded . Since then Wavehunter has uploaded his updated chart which is now (by consensus) the . To summarise what I need help with doing/for someone to do for me: All of these listed graphs need to be added to the chronology of the and not be as separate pages. In chronological order the follow should be added to the chronology: (or deleted) (current) Note: Please do not include: the as it is useful on other pages and does not fit in the chronology (as does not include 2010or11! I would really appreciate someone doing this for me, as I am likely to make a mistake with it being multiple edits and my 1st time doing this. Could you also leave a note explaining how to do this for future reference on the talk page for the benefit of myself and future editors. I also want to know how to do this so that I can use my new skill on another page, I have another picture that I need to replace/update but I want to do it properly! So once I know what I'm doing and once someone has done this for me I will be able to see to things like this in the future. One would be to create a category that contains all these images so they could be seen together. Another, and this maybe what you are referring to is to upload a new version of an existing file. This is an option for any image and at the bottom of the image page you get a thumbnail view of all the previous versions. The advantage is that you don't have to keep changing the article the image is used in as the image file name remains the same. The disadvantage is if someone wants to maintain a static link to one of the previous versions of the image elsewhere. I'd suggest that if you want to do this you raise it on the talk page of a candidate image page and leave a note at the original editors talk page as well. Had you given a proper answer (instead of merely correcting my terminology) or just not bothered to answer, someone else could have given an answer! If you know the answer please just say it in plain English or at least say something helpful! I really don't see why you bothered typing anything on a question and answer page when you neither a question or an answer! My tone is confrontational because you have really annoyed me! People don't like being patronized by having their terminology corrected for the sake of it. If you go to a question and answer page in future, please please please either ask a question or answer a question. I'm telling you because what you did made it look as if my question had been answered, when all you'd done is corrected my terminology. By the way brevity is hard to come by in the face of complicated questions! A simple "you don't appear to have answered my question" or "I don't understand your answer" would have done. I did point out that it was possible to upload a new version of an image. Yes that was incredibly useful since I'd said in my opening statement that I'd already been uploading images. I was asking HOW you upload a new version of an image! I knew it was possible and gave an example showing that. At the Teahouse

Hello! Since you responded to (this) question by TheUmbrellaAgencyBP (talk) at the Teahouse, I thought I'd mention a concern I have regarding COI. First of all, the username suggests representation of an agency rather than an individual, and secondly the Umbrella Agency represents the subject of the article. Eric, thanks for the message, TUA has already been left a note about his username and as yet I'm not seeing the COI arising - all that exists currently is an under developed article at AFC - just one of many. If it starts veering off into the hyperbolic then fine it'll get tagged as COI but for the time being I don't see it as an issue and I'm not going to jump on someone as a preventative measure. Hi I suppose I know too much about this as the new book will reveal. The link to the polical situation is far more significant than realised by any other author. It was yet another bad news story for a country in very low morale and political melt down. It was dealt with then as any other bad news story for governments "bury it" and deflect any blame from us. Fortunately they had two easily identified culprits. The wider issues that have remained as classified documents for nearly 100 years tell a different story - and a fascinating one. It has two URL addresses. Of course, the images are for Wikipedia only. Also, that image is their specialty crop but do not worry. I'll specify it in the article. I just want you to know, Okray Family Farms is not my first article. It is my fourth article but for some reason I was forced to delete the four articles.

You really want to check out the General notability guidelines about what constitutes notability and what is needed to support it by way of reliable sources. Tim Gustard

I note that in the past you have modified the Tim Gustard page. It was originally created by a devoted collector and was a bit flowery. Wiki editors cleaned it up satisfactorily until user Filthemill came along. He seems to have and agenda clouded by personal prejudice and insists on deleting and adding derogatory matter in order to belittle, this is not in the spirit of Wikipedia. It would me great if someone like yourself could rebuild the article in the correct format, failing this it would be better to see the article deleted completely. Shadow_Hand

Hi, I've recently been trying to update the images on the Shadow_Hand page, but don't seem to be able to comply with the guidelines. I first added two images on a non-free license, next in response to feedback that there was no reason that a free image could not be created, I created free versions of the images (I first tried to update the existing images but the copyright section of the page didn't seem to reflect my updates).

I then got another message saying there was no proof that the image was licensed under CC-SA so I used the template to send a consent email (I work for the company that created the images).

Finally all images have been removed, and the free image I uploaded the second time around was tagged with the following:

I don't quite understand why they were both deleted, once the original non free version was removed, the second free image was no longer redundant.

Apologies for the long post, if you could help me comply with the regulations in order to get the images up onto the page it would be much appreciated.

Hi. Let's ignore why they all got deleted for the time being and concentrate on making sure a copy stays up. So, you work for the company - in which case I'm assuming that getting permission to use the image isn't going to be difficult? It's this permission that is the important bit. Preferably it'll be an email to you and will have words along the lines of what is in WP:CONSENT. At this point upload the image to Commons (not wikipedia - it allows for global use this way) but instead of adding any licence to it, add {{OTRS pending}} as the licence. Then forward the email you have, with the image attached to permissions-commonswikimedia.org. One of the volunteers there will check that the permission received is correct and will then update the image licence accordingly.

I think the problem last time was that an admin thought that the image might be freely available in which case the non free use criteria don't apply and the problem I recall seeing was that the image information said the licencing was available on the company's website but that I couldn't find it (That last bit might be wrong, I check loads of uploaded images for licences so I don't remember them all, in which case apologies).

When asking for permission it's important to remember that the permission must be for unrestricted use, anywhere by anyone including commercial re-use, even though wikipedia/Commons are non-commercial websites the image use policies require that images can be commercially re-used. Technically the copyright belongs to the photographer unless there was a specific contract between the company and the photographer assigning copyright to the company. So it's most likely the photographer's permission that is needed. If there was specific assignment then yes you could write the email yourself as long as you're a senior manager of the company (I guess from the above you are, if not the owner). The alternative is to take another photo yourself and upload it as your own work. I'm sorry this all seems so tiresome but it's about protecting your intellectual property rights and the photogrpaher's copyright as well as Wikipedia's reputation.
