I haven't been active on any of the MDW articles in a few years, but I have been getting on a little more recently and checking my Watched pages and noticed you are still going strong. • @User:jlcoving: Hi! How are you? It's been a long time since we talked. I was actually retired for 2 years, and thought about giving up Wikipedia altogether at some point. I just got busy with work/life and then I got used to not editing at all. I always tried to stay informed with the news, but there was a period of at least 6 months when I didn't follow any more MDW news any more. I'm finally back, though! I'm back after I made it a 2017 resolution because it made me really happy to write. I just recently finished this article (nominated for DYK and eventually will try to promote it to GA). Right now I'm working on Mark Kilroy's article here, but it's bare bones right now. There is a lot of content in the sources so it should be like the other one. After that, I want to work on every MDW biography and promote them to GA at some point. I think taking such a long break as good for me because I think I've evolved as an editor. I'm starting to incorporate books/offline sources and becoming better at citing. If you'd like, I can send you a message when I'm working on something. Great Article

My friend this article you wrote is amazing, Murder of Joey Fischer. As someone who has a very keen interest in this time period in American history I read through the whole thing. You've inspired me to update some of my own articles which are to do with crimes around this time period. It must have taken a long time to gather all that information, wow, amazing work! • Inexpiable - Hey, thank you! I'm glad you liked it. I specialize in Mexican Drug War articles, particularly biographies and events (like this one I recently created), but Joey's murder was the first article where I felt something "personal". I grew up in Matamoros around the time Joey was killed, so that's where my interest comes from. I was retired from Wikipedia for almost two years and came back after I made it my New Year's resolution; this was my first article coming back, and it took me about an entire month to go through The Brownsville Herald archives and read through each one before writing the article. As I was writing, I noticed that his death date was getting closer and closer, so I decided to nominate it for DYK. It was finally posted on the Main Page on March 3rd, the day of his death. Over 19K people viewed his article that day. A lot of editors/IP users fixed the grammar/prose so it helped a lot.

Have you ever considered posting your newly created/5x expanded articles to DYK? It's a great place to keep yourself busy and have your articles viewed by a larger audience. I recently submitted Murder of Mark Kilroy there. I'd be happy to take a look at your first nomination or give you some advice before you put it up for review. There are a few things you might need to know. I'm mostly interested in Mexican crime articles, but I've recently grown interests in Texas murders too (like Death of Irene Garza, which I reviewed for Good Article just this weekend). I might consider doing that with DYK but to be honest with you I would be slightly worried about my articles getting flagged or deleted as I have had a few removed in the past which worries me a little, because they weren't notable enough or were sourced badly. I have improved massively since then though. If you're interested in Texas murders though, I wrote this article: Murder of Pete Shrum which was the murder of a gas station clerk in Mesquite that actually happened the same month as the Murder of Joey Fischer, which is what first got me interested in your article. I know the murder of a clerk isn't relevant for Notability criteria, but his murder was filmed and is well known cause of it. I advise you don't watch the video of his death on LiveLeak cause it is very disturbing and a sad story. This crime really bothered me and it's why I made a page for it. Wikipedia notability is a concern for me on the article but his death was filmed which is what I feel makes it notable. It's been shown in quite a few tv documentaries so what do you think? As his murder was filmed it's pretty well known online cause the footage is out there and the article got nearly 2000 views in a few days when it was featured on reddit. The problem is a lot of the news sources are from archive files which requires a fee for each one, which makes it difficult to source the information. But thanks for the help. Inexpiable - Hi, I would say that if a certain murder was covered in several TV documentaries, it would also have newspaper and book coverages. If not, then it would be very difficult to prove that your topic is notable. Have you read through Wikipedia:News articles? I really like this quote they have: A violent crime, sensationalized event or accidental death may be notable enough to reporters and news editors to justify coverage in the news, but not be of encyclopedic importance. But a crime that led to a significant change in the law, an event that actually became a sensation, or a death that led to new safety practices, may have long-term encyclopedic value, and could merit an article if sufficient secondary sources were available to establish its importance. Take Murder of Darrell Lunsford, which you wrote, for example. This definitely marked a change in the way police officers do routine stops (as long as you can prove that and make the article long enough with reliable sources, you're good to go). For anything other than that, editors will cite Wikipedia:Wikipedia is not a newspaper.

Are you by any chance a university student or have a public library card? Sometimes this can grant you access to paid newspaper archives. I have a University of Texas account to access archives and get print books (often through interlibrary loans). What I usually do to decide whether a topic is notable is, [1] make sure the topic goes beyond just a local coverage (in Joey's case, most was covered by the Brownsville Herald, but the NYT, The Houston Chronicle, AP, the New Yorker, and a few book pages covered it too), [2] look in Google Books and see if you can pull a few reliable books to use, [3] news articles talked about the murder well after the murder occurred, and not just "reported" it when it happened and then never talked about it again (this establishes the impact of the event as "historical"). ComputerJA Hi thanks for the advice. I actually graduated last year and I'm also from the UK so I would have no such luck with accessing those archives. I agree with this: Wikipedia:Wikipedia is not a newspaper and what you said about notability. But, isn't the fact that if a murder was filmed it makes me it far more notable than a standard murder? We're effectively watching the last few minutes of someones life. When I first saw Banned from TV the first thing I wanted to do was find out more about some of the film content. No such luck, which is why I wrote some of the articles. In this day and era the filmed deaths now exist online, extracted from various documentaries and other programs. The videos are out there, on reddit, liveleak and even youtube. Most getting thousands of views, even Banned from TV has over 500K views on YouTube. That means those 500,000 people also have watched the Murder of Charles Blankenship for example, another article I wrote. This article has been featured in the Sub Reddit Watch people die - not because people enjoy these things but I feel it's more morbid curiosity. I would just hate to see any of my articles deleted because they're not "notable" enough because I've put a lot of work into them. What do you think about that? Inexpiable - I hate that feeling. Working on an article that later gets flagged for deletion. That happened to me at the very beginning when I was writing articles about people from Mexico (mostly historical biographies) that were not "notable" for Wikipedia. I knew they were, but most of them were mentioned in offline sources that I had no way of backing up online. I'm pretty sure you can make a case for your articles, however. The thing is, I'd say that most of the info you would rely on is in print newspapers from the city/state the murder occurred. And that's extremely difficult to access. Try to make your articles somewhat long and keep those three points I mentioned in mind. I'm more of an inclusionist here so I rather see your articles than have them deleted. Another thank you - thanks for checking out my Murder of Darrell Lunsford article, another 1990s murder in Texas, I figured it would interest you. It was the first article I ever wrote for Wikipedia back in 2011. It was actually because of the information you put in your Joey Fischer article with the Federal Bureau of Prisons inmate locator that I was able to find the information on where the three suspects were imprisoned. IMO, one of the things that is seriously wrong with Wikipedia is that WP:barnstars (which are cheap) are not given out with more alacrity. We are long on whips and sticks, and short on carrots and caresses. Rectifying this would go a long way toward resolving our editor retention crisis. See Wikipedia:Award barnstars. Hello, ComputerJA. It's been a few weeks since you put the GA review of Giosue Gallucci up for a second opinion and there's been no reply yet. I was wondering if you would be willing to look at an article I created, Nicolo Schiro. It's nowhere near GA level, I'm just looking for a general impression, any problems, and any advice for improvement. I was hoping to ask you after the GA review, since you seem interested in the general subject of crime. However, because of the delay I thought I might as well ask now. • @Libertybison: Hi, thanks for stopping by! I think the article is pretty good. Sources are strong and it seems to be thorough. Here are a few suggestions:

(1): I would say you should expand the intro a bit more (two short paragraphs should be fine). I'm thinking like an intro this size that accurately summarizes the article per WP:LEAD should be good.

(2): Make sure his death date is complete in the body paragraphs. The infobox has the complete date but the section below does not.

(3): The intro lacks his nationality. I saw Joseph Bonanno has "Sicilian-born American". Perhaps adding "early Italian mafia boss" should be fine (since he renounced his American citizenship).

(4): Italy is linked twice in the infobox so that might constitute WP:OVERLINK. Same goes for Sicily.

(5): At this time the most powerful mafia boss — I would rephrase this per WP:WEASEL. Trust me, I often do the same thing when I write about Mexican drug lords. I usually put "high-ranking" instead of powerful but in this case it would sound weird.

(6): Dash, Mike (2009). The First Family: Terror, Extortion and the Birth of the American Mafia. London: Simon & Schuster. — Just saw this doesn't show the page when you click the book. You will probably need it if you plan to nominate it to GA.

(7): I thought that this source was unreliable, but I googled the writers and they appear to be experts in their field (they wrote some books together). You should be good here as long as you can show that they are the same person.

(8): Some of the sources have dates like "9 December 1910" and "2015-02-05". Try to choose one of the two.

RE: Retired

Hey thanks for the message. No not for good, I've put it back to semi-retired. I will edit casually from now on. It's not just the DYK situation, I kind of feel I've been spending a lot of time on here so fancy a break from it. Need to focus on my personal life and I should be starting a new job soon which will keep me busy. I doubt I'll make any new articles from now on to be honest. I mean I get the whole DYK thing I just don't agree with some of it and when you spend ages writing stuff for an article for it to just get taken down is obviously very frustrating. Not only that I made an edit on another article that I didn't personally create recently, took me a while to find the prison records for the offender and then it's reverted for "too much unnecessary information". Stuff like that just makes me question why I bother. I'll make a few minor edits here and there and update my own articles but I feel it's just time to move on. Thanks for the message though. CN tags on Samborombón Bay

Hello! I see that you've added two "citation needed" tags to the article Samborombón Bay. Can you clarify what you'd like to see changed in the article? The first sentence you've tagged simply says that this bay, a river that runs into it, and a town along that river have the same name. What kind of evidence would you like to see corroborate that claim? The second tagged sentence says that this bay falls to the west of "a line joining Punta del Este, Uruguay and Cabo San Antonio, Argentina" and is therefore, according to the IHO, part of the Río de la Plata, since the IHO says that line is the eastern boundary of the river. You can see in the satellite photograph in the infobox that the bay is indeed west of that line; what claim made by the final phrase do you feel needs further support, and what sort of supporting evidence would you find to be satisfactory? • @Bryanrutherford0: Thanks for coming to my talkpage. I simply added the tags because I usually like to make sure articles cite everything, even if they make the claim that the sky is blue. As far as the town goes, I noticed that it is also known as "Las Posadas", so you never know who might have challenged the name of the town. As far as the second CN tag, I would try so cite that too. I recently wrote an article, Hotelito Desconocido, where I wrote about its location. I made sure that the location was backed up by reliable sources, even though I could have pulled the info through satellite view and determined that it was on the Pacific Ocean. I like to cite everything so my updates are never challenged. Feel free to remove the second CN tag or add a new ref (a satellite view from NASA or something is might suffice!). I really appreciate you adding those sources! I agree that citing everything is ideal, and that WP:NOTBLUE makes some fine points. On the other hand, as Euclid pointed out, we can't prove everything; there have to be some assumptions of "common knowledge" at some point, or there's nowhere for us to start building. What I really wish I had was a good map image that has Punta del Este and Cabo San Antonio marked, along with Samborombón Bay. I think such an image would render this claim both more clear and much more proof against dispute; maybe I should try to make one at some point. I created this profile a couple of months ago after reading through the guidelines of Wikipedia and I consider my article follows them accurately. I completely recognize that the profile can continue improving, but I believe deleting the article altogether was too extreme. I understand that there are people who have become experts in Wikipedia, but this is supposed to be a community, and we all need to have a place and an opportunity to create. If everything is going to be deleted by "experts" without providing suggestions to improve the content, then it means this is not really a place for everyone to create and contribute. • @Anittadp: Hi Ana, thank you for coming to my talkpage. I think the best chance of making a Wikipedia article on the subject you wrote is to go to this page. In the first bar, you can create a draft. You'll be able to fix, update, and write content as much as you want without worrying about it being deleted for not being "notable" enough. Articles generally require significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the topic. Keep in mind that not every subject in the world meets the notability criteria; some that don't might do so in future, and some (probably) never will. Editors, including myself, can help you get your draft up to an article if the subject has potential to get there. I had some trouble finding reliable sources on the person you wrote about. If you are able to prove that person is notable (based on what I mentioned above) I think it should be good. Regarding all of these, my impression is that the basic data (e.g. most infobox content) and the content summary of a podcast would be treated similarly to that of a book (i.e. an inline citation isn't required for each item of the infobox and each line of the summary because it's assumed it's right there in the book/podcast). For example, the producers are read at the end of each episode and are on every episode page. As a general guideline, the information in infoboxes should be cited elsewhere in the article (unless the information is obvious — but it isn't clear what they mean by that). I would say that the best way to approach this is by adding the information somewhere in the article, that way we don't clog the infobox with references, per WP:INFOBOXREF. Hope this helps. With this edit to the article Barack Obama you archived 392 references, adding 74,894 bytes to the article, and increasing its already huge size by 22.6%, from 330,241 to 405,135 bytes.
