Thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. Before saving your changes to an article, please provide an edit summary for your edits. Doing so helps everyone understand the intention of your edit (and prevents legitimate edits from being mistaken for vandalism). It is also helpful to users reading the edit history of the page. Thank you. —EncMstr (talk) 18:12, 23 December 2010 (UTC)

File source problem with File:SchottensteinBavliFrench.jpg

Thank you for uploading File:SchottensteinBavliFrench.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, please add a link to the page from which it was taken, together with a brief restatement of the website's terms of use of its content. If the original copyright holder is a party unaffiliated with the website, that author should also be credited. Please add this information by editing the image description page.

If the necessary information is not added within the next days, the image will be deleted. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem.

Please refer to the image use policy to learn what images you can or cannot upload on Wikipedia. Please also check any other files you have uploaded to make sure they are correctly tagged. Here is a list of your uploads. If you have any questions or are in need of assistance please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Eeekster (talk) 23:29, 24 June 2011 (UTC)

Please do not remove file deletion tags from file description pages on Wikipedia, as you did to File:SchottensteinBavliEnglish.jpg, without resolving the problem that the template refers to, or giving a valid reason for the removal in the edit summary. Your removal of this template does not appear constructive, and has been reverted. Thank you. Eeekster (talk) 00:06, 25 June 2011 (UTC)

Proposed deletion of Ed Remson

The article Ed Remson has been proposed for deletion because under Wikipedia policy, all biographies of living persons created after March 18, 2010, must have at least one source that directly supports material in the article.

If you created the article, please don't take offense. Instead, consider improving the article. For help on inserting references, see Wikipedia:Referencing for beginners or ask at Wikipedia:Help desk. Once you have provided at least one reliable source, you may remove the {{prod blp}} tag. Please do not remove the tag unless the article is sourced. If you cannot provide such a source within ten days, the article may be deleted, but you can request that it be undeleted when you are ready to add one. Calabe1992 (talk) 03:05, 25 June 2011 (UTC)

The image you uploaded

Hi. I see you're having some problems with the image you uploaded. Here's how to solve them:

(1) Under "Licensing", copy and paste: {{Non-free book cover}} (If you edit this message, remove the <nowiki></nowiki> tags before you paste the copyright template.)

(2) Under "Summary", add a "fair use rationale". Click on {{book cover fur}} and you'll see the template you should use and instructions on how to complete it.

(3) Once you've completed (1) and (2), ask another editor to remove the "speedy deletion" notice from the image.

If you have any questions, please leave me a message, either here or on my Talk page. — Malik Shabazz Talk/Stalk 04:28, 25 June 2011 (UTC)

PS: In the future, try using the Upload Wizard. It will prompt you to complete these forms when you upload a picture.

File copyright problem with File:SchottensteinBavliHebrew.jpg

Thank you for uploading File:SchottensteinBavliHebrew.jpg. However, it currently is missing information on its copyright and licensing status. Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously. It may be deleted soon, unless we can verify that it has an acceptable license status and a verifiable source. Please add this information by editing the image description page. You may refer to the image use policy to learn what files you can or cannot upload on Wikipedia. The page on copyright tags may help you to find the correct tag to use for your file. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem.

Please also check any other files you may have uploaded to make sure they are correctly tagged. Here is a list of your uploads.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thanks again for your cooperation. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 14:45, 25 June 2011 (UTC)

Orphaned non-free image File:SchottensteinBavliEnglish.jpg

Thanks for uploading File:SchottensteinBavliEnglish.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

PLEASE NOTE:

  • I am a bot, and will therefore not be able to answer your questions.
  • I will remove the request for deletion if the file is used in an article once again.
  • If you receive this notice after the image is deleted, and you want to restore the image, click here to file an un-delete request.
  • To opt out of these bot messages, add {{bots|deny=DASHBot}} to your talk page.

I see, I looked at the link that you gave me, I use Mac, will that be a problem? Magister Scienta (talk) 06:09, 30 June 2011 (UTC)
I'll do it for you, but I need more information. What is the category and what is the template you want to add? Will the template go on the article or the talk page? --The Σ talkcontribs 07:10, 30 June 2011 (UTC)
Thanks, I'll get back to you tomorrow on the specifics. Magister Scienta (talk) 07:13, 30 June 2011 (UTC)
Here are the specifics, I created a template (right here) that invites people to WikiProject Judaism, the project didn't have one before. This template will be manually added to Userpages by members of WikiProject Judaism in most cases. However I want to invite everybody single person on the English Wikipedia who lists themselves as Jewish (don't worry, it's only a few hundred, I'm not joking). There are about 30 different Userbox categories (this member is Jewish, this member is a Jew, this member is an Orthodox Jew...etc.) for people who label themselves as Jewish (the list can be found here. Categorizing what your religion is, is done by adding the appropriate Userbox. To the right of every Userboxe is a link that says transclusions, when clicked on it opens a page with a list of people who inserted the corresponding Userbox into their Userpage. I know you probably already know this, I'm just being safe. In short, I want to take the names listed on those 30 pages and add this template to the talk page of each User listed. What should I do? Thanks in advance. Magister Scienta (talk) 21:52, 30 June 2011 (UTC)
Hm... automating a sending of a message to someone who might not even want it? This could be controversial. --The Σ talkcontribs 21:55, 30 June 2011 (UTC)
Hold on a second, I have a response. By definition, an invitation is something the user doesn't request. If I saw User:Example, and he was really doing a great job contributing to Jewish articles and active on Jewish article talk pages, but was not part of WikiProject Judaism, I'd invite him even though he "might not even want it." Therefore, there must be a criteria for when it is appropriate to send an invite. That precedent here for sending an invite is whether or not there is a reasonable chance the User would join. Most WikiProject satisfy this precedent by sending invites to people who have contributed to articles that particular WikiProject is about. The idea is, if somebody repeatedly edits pages on a certain topic, there's a reasonable chance they would want to join a WikiProject on that topic. The issue arises, most people now think that the only way to satisfy the "reasonable chance" requirement is through repeated editing of that certain topic, this is faulty logic! My argument rests in the idea that when somebody deliberately labels themselves Jewish, it's logical to assume there may be a reasonable chance they want to join a WikiProject about Judaism. Comments? Magister Scienta (talk) 00:43, 1 July 2011 (UTC)
I'll use AWB then. But I'll add a disclaimer that the receiver should not kill the messenger, just in case. --The Σ talkcontribs 01:55, 1 July 2011 (UTC)
Hold on 5 minutes! Magister Scienta (talk) 01:58, 1 July 2011 (UTC)
Do I use {{subst:WikiProject Judaism Invite}} or just {{WikiProject Judaism Invite}}? --The Σ talkcontribs 02:10, 1 July 2011 (UTC)
Before you go ahead and do it, do you think that the template is OK? Please insert the template as{{WikiProject Judaism Invite|Magister Scienta}}, not in any other way, thanks. It's now ready to be sent, please send it to all 30 lists if you can. Magister Scienta (talk) 02:15, 1 July 2011 (UTC)
I'll fix a bit of it, because transcluding it will make the date change with time, instead of freezing it in place. --The Σ talkcontribs 02:21, 1 July 2011 (UTC)
Also, I'll have to subst: it, because substitution basically copy and pastes the content of the template to where you put {{subst:Template}}. --The Σ talkcontribs 02:23, 1 July 2011 (UTC)
Your right, I forgot about the date part. It should definitely be substituted, not transcluded. Aside from that, what else are you changing? Magister Scienta (talk) 02:25, 1 July 2011 (UTC)
Nothing, and I'm sending the message now. I will not send the message to anyone who has no timestamp in 2011 on their talk page. --The Σ talkcontribs 02:34, 1 July 2011 (UTC)
Excellent, if it is possible, please send the template to users on all 30 lists (i.e. the 30 lists of users who have transcluded the 30 different Jewish-related userboxes onto their page.) Magister Scienta (talk) 02:37, 1 July 2011 (UTC)
I've got around 70 done. I'll finish it up later. --The Σ talkcontribs 03:00, 1 July 2011 (UTC)
Thank you. When you get chance, it would be great if you explained to me how you did it, or if you give me an idea of where I can learn more. Thanks again, I really appreciate everything you've done. Magister Scienta (talk) 03:02, 1 July 2011 (UTC)
I used AutoWikiBrowser. --The Σ talkcontribs 03:06, 1 July 2011 (UTC)
One last question, if I wanted to add a welcome and thanks for your contributions template to every user in the "recent edits made by new user list", which can be found here, could AWB do it? Magister Scienta (talk) 03:38, 1 July 2011 (UTC)
You shouldn't do that at all - Red-linked talk pages are good ways to find vandalism-only accounts. --The Σ talkcontribs 03:42, 1 July 2011 (UTC)
I don't totally follow, could you please elaborate? Magister Scienta (talk) 03:44, 1 July 2011 (UTC)

Automated welcoming = big nono. See this for more details. --The Σ talkcontribs 05:49, 1 July 2011 (UTC)

A once-over?

Hey Magister Scienta, I've written an article that's still unpublished: User:Palladiainc/Palladia,_Inc and I'd really appreciate it if you'd give it the old once-over before I publish it to make sure I'm not breaking any laws or hearts. If you've a mind to, perhaps you might also give me a little feedback as to how to improve on what I've written. I feel pretty confident about the style and content, about the citations, and about my use of the wikicode but it's always best to have a second opinion. Any comments you have would be very helpful. Thank you so much, --Palladiainc (talk) 18:55, 7 July 2011 (UTC)

Help desk question

I think {{MONTHNAME}} does what you are looking for. -- John of Reading (talk) 15:59, 28 July 2011 (UTC)

Very long

You made some bad edits to Template:Very long today, and a BS edit to its documentation. It seems to me you don't really know yet how to edit templates. Plase familiarise yourself with that matter before doing more damage. Debresser (talk) 16:43, 28 July 2011 (UTC)

You asked me to explain what was bad about your edits. 1. You introduced whitelines, which were subsequently transcluded to all instances of this template. You obviously are not aware of the fact that a noinclude tag should follow right after the end of the template (which is usually marked by a remark tag, for a specific but unrelated reason). 2. Comments like "Please be responsible while editing this page, thanks." are childish and an affront to editors. 3. You changed all templates to the July 2011 category. That is to say, even those tagged at a different date.
I am sorry, but you had until this moment no idea what you did wrong. That much is evident from your post on my talkpage. Which means, with all due respect, that you do not yet know how to work with templates yet. I hope my reply has explained something to you. If it has not, then please understand that this means you should not edit templates in the future, till you do.
Btw, be advised that this template was edited in the past by a few of Wikipedia's most knowledgeable template editors. It is quite presumptuous to think you could make a trivial improvement to it. Debresser (talk) 00:00, 29 July 2011 (UTC)

Hello, Magister Scienta. You have new messages at Debresser's talk page.
You can remove this notice at any time by removing the {{Talkback}} or {{Tb}} template.

Your signature

The signature you left on my talk page yesterday contains {{CURRENTDAY}} {{CURRENTMONTHNAME}} {{CURRENTYEAR}}. This won't work, because the software replaces those codes with the date on which the page is being viewed. You need to "subst" these codes so that they are evaluated just once when you save the edit: {{subst:CURRENTDAY}} {{subst:CURRENTMONTHNAME}} {{subst:CURRENTYEAR}}. That said, I'd prefer that your edits were labelled with the time as well as the date, so why not remove them from your signature and sign with four tildes? -- John of Reading (talk) 07:06, 29 July 2011 (UTC)

Your category

Sorry, me again. I see that you've created Category:Magister Scienta Templates. Did you know that there is a tool that can list the pages you've created in any namespace, not just articles? Try this link. You might like to add that to your user page, perhaps. -- John of Reading (talk) 07:14, 29 July 2011 (UTC)

Please see Wikipedia_talk:Categories_for_discussion#Personal_category. Debresser (talk) 07:35, 29 July 2011 (UTC)

I have nominated Category:PageInfo for deletion, since the "What links here" option in the toolbox does exactly this job. The deletion discussion is at Wikipedia:Categories_for_discussion/Log/2011_July_29#Category:PageInfo. -- John of Reading (talk) 10:46, 29 July 2011 (UTC)

Your templates

Me again, with more thoughts.

  • Did you know that you can create templates in your own user space? If you create a template at, say, User:Magister Scienta/Example template name, then you can use it by keying {{User:Magister Scienta/Example template name}} or {{subst:User:Magister Scienta/Example template name}}.
  • I'm guessing from {{PageInfo}} that you haven't discovered Navigation popups. With these enabled in your preferences, your browser will give you this kind of basic information whenever you hover over a blue link. Once you get used to it, it's a very convenient way to see more information and to do common actions. -- John of Reading (talk) 10:27, 29 July 2011 (UTC)
Thanks for the ideas, I really appreciate them. In truth the PageInfo template was more of a pet project I wanted to develop than a mass-deployed template. You have once again proven to me the effectiveness of the Help Desk and the friendliness of the Wikipedia Community, thank you. Magister Scientatalk (29 July 2011)

Aligning tmboxes

Tmbox is a 'standard', hence it is supposed to impose a certain layout.

Tmbox uses standard CSS classes to enforce a standard format. It's supposed to be either full-width and centred, or floating on the right. You can't force alighment, unless you put them into a table or divs. But that all gets really messy - and, usually, is pointless.

Easier, just use a normal wiki table - setting the background to the colour of a 'normal' tmbox, if you like. Then you can align it however you like.

{| style="background: #F8EABA; float: left; border: 1px solid #C0C090; "
|-
| [[File:Imbox notice.png|40x40px]] || Example One

{| style="background: #F8EABA; border: 1px solid #C0C090; " align="center"

Preserving history and...

Hi Magister Scienta, I am really glad you are keen, this is good. This place can be a steep learning curve. One of the things is preserving history of pages so it records accurately who did what when. If you look at the tabs at the top of the page you should be able to find a Move command. This is why I Moved the old collaboration to the new one you made so the attribution is preserved. You can't really just cut and paste like that (don't worry, I made this mistake early on and had an admin come and clean up afterwards!). However there is another problem:

See there already is at collaboration template:

See - template:JCOTW

You've gone and made template:ChosenArticle when there is an existing template. The problem with the new name is that it is nonspecific as we have bird, dinosaur, US and other collaborations all over the wiki. I will correct this later today, but I recommend having a good look before creating templates and having a think about whether what you're creating already exists in some form. If in doubt, just ask. Many of us have been around for a few years and might have seen what you're looking for. Sometimes this place can be a real rabbit warren.

Also, not sure that calling it the JEW Collaboration is a great idea. I am not jewish so I can't comment personally but if I were you I'd listen if someone feels it's not such a good abbreviation. Cheers, Casliber (talk · contribs) 23:08, 3 August 2011 (UTC)
