Sunday March 26: Action=History Wiki-Hackathon @ Ace Hotel

On the last Sunday of every month, the Boardroom at Ace Hotel New York hosts Action Equals History — a unique opportunity for New Yorkers to learn hands-on in a technology training/workshop session about the mechanics, practices and benefits of Wikipedia and the Wikimedia projects. This is an opportunity for all to gather, share and work collectively towards a more robust account of history.

For this month, and following on the recent Art+Feminism campaign, we'll focus on building better edit-a-thon tools for a variety of different thematic campaigns, and user-testing them with the community. Towards a goal of advancing these tools for wider use with diverse local groups.

Newcomers are very welcome! Bring your friends and colleagues! --Pharos (talk) 05:13, 21 March 2017 (UTC)Reply

Ban edit

I should tell you I mentioned you at WP:ANI. Welcome to the club - it's rather large. Nfitz (talk) 07:14, 21 April 2017 (UTC)Reply

@Nfitz: No worries. Post replied to. —LRG5784 (talk · contribs · email) 07:51, 21 April 2017 (UTC)Reply
Well I guess that drama is over. Perhaps we should start a support group for those who have been "banned". The victims aren't difficult to find, as invariably he seems to use that silly template of his (who the heck makes a template for the explicit purpose of banning the regulars? Nfitz (talk) 22:48, 22 April 2017 (UTC)Reply
@Nfitz: LMAO!!! Things like that is part of the reason why I took off from Wikipedia 7 years ago, users like that as well as the red tape that bogs Wikipedia. Hopefully I never have to have any run-ins with that user again. —LRG5784 (talk · contribs · email) 17:36, 24 April 2017 (UTC)Reply
It is a systemic problem. I've pondered for a while. I think I'm down to, that a lot of the those with the most influence spend many hours editing. However, I've still not really figured out how one has the ability to do that. Do people not have jobs, families, other passions, etc.? I'll vanish for long periods of time when work is crazy, or something else is going on. Sometimes, I'll just spend a half-hour on a Sunday for a few weeks. Is there potentially an issue giving power to those who seem to have an unbalanced life? Does it create some warping of societal norms? I don't know the answers to these questions. Nfitz (talk) 21:26, 24 April 2017 (UTC)Reply
@Nfitz: I'm really not sure, but you're right it is an uphill battle. I feel like these ppl that spend hours on end on here act the way they do because it just gives them something to do, no reason at all either. I can't even tell you how many run-ins I've had with contributors like that. I'm just glad I'm not the only one who feels this way. —LRG5784 (talk · contribs · email) 23:41, 24 April 2017 (UTC)Reply

Edits edit

I'd suggest that you go to dispute resolution procedures instead of edit warring(which isn't permitted even if you are correct). 331dot (talk) 16:29, 24 June 2017 (UTC)Reply

@331dot: I am in the process of notifying the AN3 noticeboard about the IP user. He proceeded to call me a "dummy" and telling me to "bring it on, police officer". I don't want to be a tattle tale per se, but ad hominem attacks is something I won't tolerate. —LRG5784 (talk · contribs · email) 16:32, 24 June 2017 (UTC)Reply
You certainly should not tolerate personal attacks (and you can certainly make an appropriate report for them in addition to a AN3 report); but I would then suggest leaving the situation to the AN3 report. 331dot (talk) 16:36, 24 June 2017 (UTC)Reply

There was really nothing wrong at all with my edits. He just has an attitude all because he can't accept the cold hard truth that Wikipedia is an encyclopedia and not a scheduled guide. So I really don't care at all whatsoever if he decides to tell the moderators on me. We don't have to mention exactly what times each and every line starts operating their routes, starts running express, starts running local, starts skip-stop etc. Otherwise, we would have to mention this in every article. It's like saying we should mention exactly each and every rush hour short turn (the 1 at 238th, the 2 at Nereid, the 3 at 145th, the 4 at Bedford Park, the 7 at 111th, the A at Dyckman, the D at Bay 50th, the N at 86th etc). 69.116.155.79 (talk) 21:01, 24 June 2017 (UTC)Reply

That doesn't give you the right to make personal attacks(like calling this person a "dummy") or to edit war(which the other side can't do either). If you are in a content dispute with someone, and discussion with them fails to resolve the matter, there are dispute resolution processes available to you. 331dot (talk) 21:09, 24 June 2017 (UTC)Reply
331dot: And everyone wonders why there's such a disdain towards IP users on this site...
69.116.155.79: Of course Wikipedia is not a timetable, but you're comparing apples to oranges (in regards to mentioning short-turns and the like). My intention of listing the times was to benefit readers over editors, and for a general audience over specialists. But ad hominem attacks is not a way to handle a dispute, and your lack of concern over the consequences shows that you are not a team player, either. —LRG5784 (talk · contribs · email) 21:19, 24 June 2017 (UTC)Reply

Get over yourself and stop whining over the words "dummy" and "bring it on, police officer". It's not that serious, especially if you're an adult. If you have a disdain towards new people, then I suggest you leave this website on the double. You need to learn how to get to know people and not just judging based on simple insults that aren't really that offensive enough for you to blow hot-steam. 69.116.155.79 (talk) 21:24, 24 June 2017 (UTC)Reply

And Wikipedia is not a timetable (which mentions every scheduled train and every scheduled short-turns). Period. Therefore, your edits get reverted right on the spot. So I was not comparing anything. 69.116.155.79 (talk) 21:26, 24 June 2017 (UTC)Reply

69.116.155.79 You're really showing how mature you are at carrying a conversation. Now, if I took the bait and retaliated back at you and called you names then it would be a problem, but if you do it then it's okay? Yeah, good to know.
Get a grip. Until you know how to hold a conversation without name calling, then I won't engage in any further conversation with you. Comment on content, not the contributor. —LRG5784 (talk · contribs · email) 22:01, 24 June 2017 (UTC)Reply

Your attitude doesn't phase me in the slightest, especially because you know the cold truth really does hurt so much. Stop whining over two little insults. It's not the end of the world and not the end of your life. 69.116.155.79 (talk) 10:03, 25 June 2017 (UTC)Reply

I have forwarded your messages to AN/I, just like I said I would. —LRG5784 (talk · contribs · email) 12:30, 25 June 2017 (UTC)Reply

Your undo edit

Hi LRG5784, as I noted in my edit I'm not opposed to reversion "for any reason" but your reversion with "no reason" was a bit surprising. Would you share your reason with me? Thank you — xaosflux Talk 16:34, 24 June 2017 (UTC)Reply

Xaosflux: Honestly, I saw removal of some content, considered it unconstructive, and reverted it. I wasn't sure what your intentions were, but now I don't think that they weren't unconstructive at all, so my bad. —LRG5784 (talk · contribs · email) 21:12, 24 June 2017 (UTC)Reply
The size difference is primarily converting that ugly table at the top to the template form. That page purposefully keeps templates minimal, but for a new editor "edit this page please" having the first thing they see be that big block of wiki-specific table code, I think it may scare them off. I'm gong to re-add, thanks for chatting. — xaosflux Talk 22:36, 24 June 2017 (UTC)Reply
Xaosflux No problem. Sorry about the mishap, have a good day! —LRG5784 (talk · contribs · email) 22:41, 24 June 2017 (UTC)Reply

M trains to Chambers Street edit

Hey, I was wondering where you got the information that the M operates to Chambers St on weekday evenings. It doesn't show up on the schedule as a note. Are they somehow marked as J trains, or is this info somewhere else? epicgenius (talk) 01:05, 6 August 2017 (UTC)Reply

@Epicgenius: I pulled it from the Transit App and I even witnessed it first hand on Friday night at around midnight. The last five M trains that, on the schedule that go to Essex Street, actually continue in service to Chambers Street. Those five trains lay up on the disused northbound local track that goes on the abandoned side of Canal and Bowery for the a.m. rush so trains don't have to deadhead to start their runs at Essex. Also, I made a comment on the WT:NYCPT page stating that TripPlanner on the MTA's website confirms this as well. —LRG5784 (talk · contribs · email) 15:50, 6 August 2017 (UTC)Reply

M shuttle R42s edit

Thanks for your edits about the R42s on the M. I knew about them through Facebook and YouTube, and I have actually ridden them, but there is an anonymous user who is reverting other anons' changes on R42 (New York City Subway car) because it is not on the Joe Korman datasheet.

Do you know of any reliable sources besides the YouTube videos? I'm thinking of using these videos for footnotes, but I can't use them as actual sources per WP:USERGEN. epicgenius (talk) 01:23, 7 September 2017 (UTC)Reply

@Epicgenius: No problem, I figured I would update the article as I witnessed it for myself, and any railfan with common sense that lives in NYC and witnessed the same thing as I did would have done the same. I realize the problem with user-generated content. but something is better than nothing, isn't it? Would a photograph be acceptable? I'm really not sure what to do here. —LRG5784 (talk · contribs · email) 01:41, 7 September 2017 (UTC)Reply
A footnote using {{efn}} would probably be OK for now. But be careful that {{citation needed}} may be appended until or unless the Joe Korman sheets get updated. epicgenius (talk) 01:43, 7 September 2017 (UTC)Reply
I have hidden the additional text on the rolling stock for now because no reliable sources have proven these changes, even if they are true (User:Vcohen and User:Train2104 have repeatedly said photos and YouTube videos are not reliable sources), plus we do not usually talk about rolling stock changes in service history articles, like the R being temporarily assigned only R160s during the Montague Street Tunnel closure or the R62As running on the 6 or the massive car assignment changes after the 9/11 attacks. If and when JoeKorner updates his data sheet, we can mention the M shuttle assignment on the R42 page. Also to say photos and videos prove R42s run on the M shuttle is true would also apply to other services using cars that are not normally assigned to them, like R143s on the J/Z, R68As on the G, N, and W, and R160s on the R. None of those services are assigned those cars, but are often seen using them. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 173.3.76.253 (talk) 14:27, 7 September 2017 (UTC)Reply
Pinging epicgenius and 173.3.76.253 (talk · contribs · WHOIS): The IP user has hidden the text about the M Shuttle and the R42s. As he didn't outright remove it I'm not mad about it, and I'm not going to just blatantly revert the edit, but on the JoeKorner car assignment page, he left a note and stated that he will not be active due to medical issues, so it appears that the source that we need will not be appearing for the time being. (Here's to hoping he recovers quickly.) So I'm not sure what to do here —LRG5784 (talk · contribs · email) 14:50, 7 September 2017 (UTC)Reply
I hope Mr. Korman has a healthy recovery as well. Anyway, about the hiding of the information: you may technically use {{efn}} to do something like this:[a] Note that these are self-published sources so you can't use them outright as citations. epicgenius (talk) 15:02, 7 September 2017 (UTC)Reply
@Epicgenius: Doing that should probably be okay. —LRG5784 (talk · contribs · email) 16:30, 7 September 2017 (UTC)Reply
I have done that, and I see you thanked my edit. I guess I should say you're welcome. By the way, you can't ping an IP user, because the only notifications they get are from talk page messages. epicgenius (talk) 23:39, 7 September 2017 (UTC)Reply
@Epicgenius: No worries man, and thanks for letting me know. —LRG5784 (talk · contribs · email) 15:09, 8 September 2017 (UTC)Reply

Metafo4r moved to draftspace edit

An article you recently created, Metafo4r, does not have enough sources and citations as written to remain published. It needs more citations from reliable, independent sources. (?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. When you feel the article meets Wikipedia's general notability guideline and thus is ready for mainspace, please follow the confirms on the Articles for Creation template atop the page.
