grep tool on toolforge

Hi Jarry1250. I can see you're not recently active but just hoping you might see this. For the last week or so the tool you created (https://grep.toolforge.org/) has been timing out. If you can fix it, or point me in the direction of another solution, that would be great. It's a really useful tool! Thanks Tassedethe (talk) 17:19, 1 May 2023 (UTC)

@Tassedethe: Thanks for letting me know, should be fixed now. :) - Jarry1250 [Vacation needed] 18:33, 8 May 2023 (UTC)
That's great! Thanks so much, Tassedethe (talk) 18:46, 8 May 2023 (UTC)

Wikicup tool

Hi Jarry, hope you're well. Just letting you know that your very helpful wikicup tool (https://wikicup.toolforge.org/) is malfunctioning in some way; it just produces a gateway timeout. Please let me know if you can fix it? ~~ AirshipJungleman29 (talk) 13:13, 9 May 2023 (UTC)

Salting on Longcat

I see that this article was deleted (and recreated, and redeleted, and recreated, and etc etc) some decades ago, and finally salted pursuant to an AN thread in 2012. Since then, of course, some new sources have come to light; currently I've got something at User:JPxG/Draft27 that I would like to put in mainspace. Would you be amenable to unprotecting? jp×g 06:31, 16 May 2023 (UTC)

Protection of David A. Bell

Hello - I see that over ten years ago, you protected David A. Bell from being recreated. Can I suggest taking a fresh look at this, and perhaps creating a redirect for David A. Bell to point to the disambig page David Bell? There are numerous people who could be described as David A. Bell who now have articles. Thanks very much. KConWiki (talk) 03:33, 30 May 2023 (UTC)

Administrators' newsletter – June 2023

News and updates for administrators from the past month (May 2023).

  Guideline and policy news

  • Following an RfC, editors indefinitely site-banned by community consensus will now have all rights, including sysop, removed.
  • As a part of the Wikimedia Foundation's IP Masking project, a new policy has been created that governs the access to temporary account IP addresses. An associated FAQ has been created and individual communities can increase the requirements to view temporary account IP addresses.

  Technical news

  • Bot operators and tool maintainers should schedule time in the coming months to test and update their tools for the effects of IP masking. IP masking will not be deployed to any content wiki until at least October 2023 and is unlikely to be deployed to the English Wikipedia until some time in 2024.

  Arbitration

  • The arbitration case World War II and the history of Jews in Poland has been closed. The topic area of Polish history during World War II (1933-1945) and the history of Jews in Poland is subject to a "reliable source consensus-required" contentious topic restriction.

WikiCup 2023 July newsletter

The third round of the 2023 WikiCup has come to an end. The 16 users who made it to the fourth round had at least 175 points. Our top scorers in round 3 were:

Contestants achieved 11 featured articles, 2 featured lists, 47 good articles, 72 featured or good article reviews, over 100 DYKs and 40 ITN appearances. As always, any content promoted after the end of round 3 but before the start of round 4 can be claimed in round 4. Please also remember that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them. When doing GARs, please make sure that you check that all the GA criteria are fully met. Please also remember that all submissions must meet core Wikipedia policies, regardless of the review process.

If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article nominations, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed (remember to remove your listing when no longer required). Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! Grep

Hello and thank you for a great tool. I have some questions however. Firstly the show source link at the bottom of the page is a dead link, so it should be updated if possible.

Secondly I noticed that the regex ^Deletion requests\/[^A-Za-z0-9]{8}\/[^A-Za-z0-9]{4}\/[^A-Za-z0-9]{4}$ (search) matches c:Commons:Deletion requests/٢٠٢٢/٠٣/٠١ and the regex ^Deletion requests\/[^A-Za-z0-9]{12}\/[^A-Za-z0-9]{6}\/[^A-Za-z0-9]{6}$ (search) matches c:Commons:Deletion requests/২০২৩/০৭/০৬ whereas I would expect that ^Deletion requests\/[^A-Za-z0-9]{4}\/[^A-Za-z0-9]{2}\/[^A-Za-z0-9]{2}$ (search) would match them both, but as you can see, that search gives 0 results. {{#invoke:string|len|২০২৩}} gives 4 so {4} should be the good regex but it's {12} that works. I guess this is a bug? Jonteemil (talk) 20:37, 6 August 2023 (UTC)

Also the regex ^Deletion requests\/[^A-Za-z0-9]{,12}\/[^A-Za-z0-9]{,6}\/[^A-Za-z0-9]{,6}$ (search) matches nothing whereas ^Deletion requests\/[^A-Za-z0-9]{8,12}\/[^A-Za-z0-9]{4,6}\/[^A-Za-z0-9]{4,6}$ (search) matches both c:Commons:Deletion requests/٢٠٢٢/٠٣/٠١ and c:Commons:Deletion requests/২০২৩/০৭/০৬. I would expect both regexes to find both pages (with the bug present, optionally only the first regex would match both pages and the second none). Jonteemil (talk) 20:44, 6 August 2023 (UTC)
Hi Jonteemil. Thanks - I have fixed the view source links. As regards the regex issues, the grep tool simply passes the regex to a custom MariaDB command. Given your examples, it seems to me that MariaDB works (by default) on the basis of "number of bytes" rather than "number of characters": ٢ and ٠ are 2 bytes each, whereas ২ and ০ are 3 bytes (and so on). However, you can switch to "number of characters" mode by prefixing your search regex with "(*UTF)". Best, - Jarry1250 [Vacation needed] 18:14, 20 August 2023 (UTC)
I see. Where do I put (*UTF) to prefix it to the search? Jonteemil (talk) 18:55, 20 August 2023 (UTC)
Right at the beginning, like this.
p.s. I realise I also missed your other question. Apparently, in PCRE (the impresentation of regular expressions that MariaDB uses), {,6} is not valid syntax (but {0,6} and {6,} are). Best, - Jarry1250 [Vacation needed] 19:36, 20 August 2023 (UTC)
Thanks! Jonteemil (talk) 20:25, 20 August 2023 (UTC)

WikiCup 2023 September newsletter

The fourth round of the competition has finished, with anyone scoring less than 673 points being eliminated. It was a high scoring round with all but one of the contestants who progressed to the final having achieved an FA during the round. The highest scorers were

  •   Epicgenius, with 2173 points topping the scores, gained mainly from a featured article, 38 good articles and 9 DYKs. He was followed by
  •   Sammi Brie, with 1575 points, gained mainly from a featured article, 28 good articles and 50 good article reviews. Close behind was
  •   Thebiguglyalien, with 1535 points mainly gained from a featured article, 15 good articles, 26 good article reviews and lots of bonus points.

Between them during round 4, contestants achieved 12 featured articles, 3 featured lists, 3 featured pictures, 126 good articles, 46 DYK entries, 14 ITN entries, 67 featured article candidate reviews and 147 good article reviews. Congratulations to our eight finalists and all who participated! It was a generally high-scoring and productive round and I think we can expect a highly competitive finish to the competition.

Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 4 but before the start of round 5 can be claimed in round 5. Remember too that you must claim your points within 10 days of "earning" them and within 24 hours of the end of the final. If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. It would be helpful if this list could be cleared of any items no longer relevant. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send.

I will be standing down as a judge after the end of the contest. I think the Cup encourages productive editors to improve their contributions to Wikipedia and I hope that someone else will step up to take over the running of the Cup. Sturmvogel 66 (talk), and Cwmhiraeth (talk)

Administrators' newsletter – September 2023

News and updates for administrators from the past month (August 2023).

  Guideline and policy news

  • Following an RfC, TFAs will be automatically semi-protected the day before it is on the main page and through the day after.
  • A discussion at WP:VPP about revision deletion and oversight for dead names found that [s]ysops can choose to use revdel if, in their view, it's the right tool for this situation, and they need not default to oversight. But oversight could well be right where there's a particularly high risk to the person. Use your judgment.

  Technical news

  Arbitration

  • The SmallCat dispute case has closed. As part of the final decision, editors participating in XfD have been reminded to be careful about forming local consensus which may or may not reflect the broader community consensus. Regular closers of XfD forums were also encouraged to note when broader community discussion, or changes to policies and guidelines, would be helpful.

  Miscellaneous

  • Tech tip: The "Browse history interactively" banner shown at the top of Special:Diff can be used to easily look through a history, assemble composite diffs, or find out what archive something wound up in.

Wikicup 2023

Hi there Jarry; over at the Wikicup talk page we're discussing changing the Wikicup bonus point system. Unprotection request for David A. Bell

I'm trying to move David Bell (historian) to David A. Bell since it's by far the WP:COMMONNAME for this person. However, the page was protected from creation by you in 2012, apparently from a discussion at Wikipedia:Administrators'_noticeboard/Archive229#List_created. It's not clear to me why this page needs to continue to be protected, so could you unprotect it? WP:RFUP requires me to ask the protecting admin first before posting there. WikiCup 2024 February newsletter

The 2024 WikiCup is off to a flying start, with 135 participants. This is the largest number of participants we have seen since 2017.

Our current leader is newcomer   Generalissima (submissions), who has one FA on John Littlejohn (preacher) and 10 GAs and 12 DYKs mostly on New Zealand coinage and Inuit figures. Here are some more noteworthy scorers:

As a reminder, competitors may submit work for the first round until 23:59 (UTC) on 27 February, and the second round starts 1 March. Remember that only the top 64 scoring competitors will make it through to the second round; currently, competitors need at least 15 points to progress. If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, and you hope to get it promoted before the end of the round, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. However, please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAN, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs which could otherwise be caused by the Cup. As ever, questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup and the judges (Cwmhiraeth (talk · contribs), Epicgenius (talk · contribs), and Frostly (talk · contribs)) are reachable on their talk pages. WikiCup 2024 March newsletter

The first round of the 2024 WikiCup ended at 23:59 (UTC) on 27 February. Everyone with at least 30 points moved on to Round 2, the highest number of points required to advance to the second round since 2014. Due to a six-way tie for the 64th-place spot, 67 contestants have qualified for Round 2.

The following scorers in Round 1 all scored more than 300 points:

In this newsletter, the judges would like to pay a special tribute to   Vami_IV (submissions), who unfortunately passed away this February. At the time of his death, he was the second-highest-scoring competitor. Outside the WikiCup, he had eight other featured articles, five A-class articles, eight other good articles, and two Four Awards. Vami also wrote an essay on completionism, a philosophy in which he deeply believed. If you can, please join us in honoring his memory by improving one of the articles on his to-do list.

Remember that any content promoted after 27 February but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, feel free to review one of the nominations listed on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed.   Established policy provides for the removal of the administrative permissions of users who have made fewer than 100 edits over a 60-month period. Your administrative permissions will be removed if you do not return to the required activity level before the beginning of June 2024.

Inactive administrators are encouraged to engage with the project in earnest rather than to make token edits to avoid loss of administrative permissions. Resources and support for re-engaging with the project are available at Wikipedia:WikiProject Editor Retention/administrators. If you do not intend to re-engage with the project in the foreseeable future, please consider voluntarily resigning your administrative permissions by making a request at the bureaucrats' noticeboard.

Thank you for your past contributions to the project. — JJMC89 bot 00:35, 1 March 2024 (UTC)
