Column width in Template:Tracklist

I finally got around to tweak the width distribution, check out my sandbox for a comparison of the current and the work-in-progress code. The template used to assign a completely static 20% per column (resulting in a 80/20, 60/20/20, etc. distribution), now it takes into consideration how many columns between Title and Length are actually used (60/40, 40/30/30, etc.). The gain in width for the Lyrics and Music columns respectively is not earth-shattering, but on a whole, width is distributed a lot fairer now and less space is wasted on unnecessary whitespace and linebreaks. Here's hoping that this change will, at least to some degree, resolve the readability issues you had with the template. – Cyrus XIII (talk) 19:46, 27 May 2008 (UTC)

Thanks, I really appreciate that. Please leave it with me for a few days as I am a but short of time for the moment, and I will come back to you with some feedback. – IbLeo (talk) 21:12, 27 May 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for your patience, I took some extra time to think this over in order not to rush out an opinion. Here it comes, finally: While I do like the idea of the the fixed "length" column to the right, I am not a fan of fixed columns for the writing credits. I feel that too much space is wasted when either the title, the lyricists or composer takes up little place. As a consequence, a song often spills out over several lines due to line wrapping, where it would have fit into one line without the fixed columns. This is best illustrated by "Rebel Run" in your new version (and even worse in the old). I don't think tweaking the column sizes would ever solve this problem.
To overcome this issue I would like to tentatively propose you to drop the fixed writing, lyrics and music columns and instead fitting title, credits and note into the "Title" column, like this:
  • A song with writing credits would be
"Little Dumb Song" (Smith, Jones, Dupond)
  • A song with music and lyrics credits would be
"Little Dumb Song" (Music: Smith, Jones / Lyrics: Dupond)
  • A song with a note would be
"Little Dumb Song" (from Little Dumb Album, 1989)
  • A song with both writing credits and note would be:
"Little Dumb Song" (Smith, Jones, Dupond) (from Little Dumb Album, 1989)
I don't know if it is possible to code this, but in case of writing credits the note could systematically go on a second line for improved readability.
And so on. As you see, I have kept your good ideas about note formatting and music/lyrics distinction. A second reason for this proposal is that it is closer to the current WP:ALBUM standard, so it might be more acceptable to the community. Remember, I do support the idea of this template and I would like eventually to see it adapted as a standard in the project. Let me know what you think. – IbLeo (talk) 06:58, 31 May 2008 (UTC)

Re:My bot

Thanks for the heads up about the books- as they aren't likely to come up much, and because I don't know AWB that well, I will just skip any page that contains either of their titles- I'll log them, and deal with them manually another time. Your other two points I had already taken into account. Thanks for your thoughts, and I won't start running until tomorrow evening- if you think of anything else that needs fixing, please drop me a line. J Milburn (talk) 22:57, 6 July 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading Image:Gasolin' promo photo.jpg. You've indicated that the image is being used under a claim of fair use, but you have not provided an adequate explanation for why it meets Wikipedia's requirements for such images. In particular, for each page the image is used on, the image must have an explanation linking to that page which explains why it needs to be used on that page. Can you please check

  • That there is a non-free use rationale on the image's description page for each article the image is used in.
  • That every article it is used on is linked to from its description page.

Sweet

RE:Sweet discography

Unfortunately, I don't own the chart book; the information contained on the Smiths' discography page was taken from someone who owned the book who printed the information for me on australian-charts.com, which I originally cited, but I was told forums were not a credible source, and so the reference was changed to refer to where the information came from; the Australian Chart Book: 1970-1992. Optionally, you can order it from the author's website, http://www.austchartbook.com.au/, or you could ask the information from a forum member who owns the book at http://www.australian-charts.com/, specifically someone such as Chartboi, BeansterBarnes and possibly even bulion. I believe they own the book, and often upon request, will publish information from the book. Ss112 (Talk here!) 10:38, 30 October 2008 (UTC)

Peter and the Wolf

Well that was an unexpected turn of events! I certainly wasn't expecting someone to suggest a notable article should be deleted. However, I would hope that should it go to AfD it would survive due to the number of reliable sources which discuss the album in depth. Fingers crossed! --JD554 (talk) 18:36, 17 March 2009 (UTC)

Don't worry about it – that's part of the fun here at Wikipedia ;-). I had actually been thinking about bringing in other people myself. – IbLeo (talk) 19:59, 17 March 2009 (UTC)
No problem, I thought it might help if the article was a little bigger and with a few more reliable sources should it come to an AfD. As for Bowie biographies, I've only read one - Strange Fascination: David Bowie - The Definitive Story by David Buckley - which I would recommend. I've also got The Complete David Bowie by Nicholas Pegg, which although not a biography is essential for detailed information about all of his songs, albums, videos, tours etc etc. I'm about to start Thomas Jerome Seabrook's Bowie in Berlin: A New Career In A New Town, which is the period which most interests me - I'll let you know what it's like. --JD554 (talk) 15:19, 19 March 2009 (UTC)
I've responded on the article's talk page regarding the compromise. Unfortunately I still feel the album should simply be a guest appearance one. By the way, I'm currently working on a new version of David Bowie discography with a view to submitting to WP:FLC. The new version is here and, you'll see I've added Peter and the Wolf to the guest appearances section. I'm nearly ready to unleash the new version, I just need to complete the lead and verify the 2000 compilations. What do you think? --JD554 (talk) 09:03, 20 March 2009 (UTC)
Hey, that's an amazing piece of work, a great leap forward compared to the current version. It must have taken you quite a while to put it together. Hats off! I only have two minor remarks:
  1. I think Space Oddity (album) should be listed as Space Oddity rather than David Bowie because this is the name that it is known under today so that' what most readers will be looking for; the original release names are explained in the article and could be mentioned under "aka". In the 1960's single section you already refer to it as Space Oddity which is rather inconsistent.
  2. By presenting it this way, you miss the fact that Peter... charged in the US.
Go for it, I'm fully with you! – IbLeo (talk) 12:49, 20 March 2009 (UTC)
Thanks! I was a bit undecided by the Space Oddity versus David Bowie title, but I think you've persuaded me. I know the Peter and the Wolf album doesn't have a chart position showing, but that's normal for guest "other albums" - usually only studio, live, compilation and EPs get them. I should hopefully get around to finishing it within the next week. Cheers, --JD554 (talk) 14:24, 20 March 2009 (UTC)
My pleasure - will be looking forward to the day you publish the finished version. One more thing: We are highly inconsistent regarding the title of one of the albums. In your new discography, you call it Hours..., while the article about it is curently called 'Hours...' and it is referred to as hours... in the Navbox and almost any article mentioning it. I don't mind which way we go, but at least we should be consistent and in line the the Manual of Style. WDYT? – IbLeo (talk) 17:14, 20 March 2009 (UTC)
Just noticed the discussions on Talk:'Hours...'. I think I will just leave it as-is. Don't want to wake up another sleeping dog... ;-) – IbLeo (talk) 21:51, 22 March 2009 (UTC)

Denmark

No problem, the problem is that all the <div> are left "open" without a </div> at the end, and the navboxes get sort of wrecked by it because it will read its own div's out of sync. And by putting a / at the end it "closes" the div just as a new </div> would. chandler · 18:49, 2 April 2009 (UTC)

David Bowie discog

Yeah, you're right about the tables being finished. The only problem I have at the moment is the verification of the UK certifications as the BPI's website has been updated and the links no longer work. I've been waiting for the new database there to come online, but it's looking like it's going to be a while yet. Finishing of the lead is just laziness on my part ;) --JD554 (talk) 08:09, 3 June 2009 (UTC)

Album summary

I was actually going to update this manually today, how strange! :) I created the table over 2 years ago, and for the first few months that's exactly what I did. I was actually in two minds whether to remove it completely or to reduce the number of fields in it. Reckon? – B.hoteptalk20:18, 12 August 2009 (UTC)

Sorry, I didn't notice it in the To Do section on the project talk page. I'll mention it there. – B.hoteptalk20:29, 12 August 2009 (UTC)
Good idea. And what a strange coincidence indeed! If it is your intention to update it manually, I have no problem with this. I would also support to reduce the table with at least those categories that doesn't exist anymore. Cheers. – IbLeo (talk) 20:36, 12 August 2009 (UTC)

How many articles use a given template?

{{helpme}} I am trying to figure out how many articles use a given template, e.g. {{Extra album cover}}? I am aware about What links here but it doesn't really provide an idea of the volume when it comes to several hundreds, or even thousands, of articles. Thanks in advance. – IbLeo (talk) 11:34, 8 September 2009 (UTC)

Hello IbLeo,
I don't know the answer. Maybe ask Wikipedia:Help desk? I guess there is probably a tool for that on toolserver.org.
Calimo (talk) 12:05, 8 September 2009 (UTC)
PS: no answer was really given, so I think the template should be left for now. Calimo (talk) 12:38, 8 September 2009 (UTC)
It's the long way round, but AWB will give you an answer. If you give me a template to try it out on, I can tell you. — neuro(talk) 12:49, 8 September 2009 (UTC)
Thanks for your replies. neuro, could you try with {{Extra album cover}} please? – IbLeo (talk) 12:56, 8 September 2009 (UTC)
I reckon it's about 1543, but neuro will be able to give you a better idea if he has AWB up and running (I can only do that from home). If there is a better/quicker way, I'd love to know too. :) – B.hoteptalk13:17, 8 September 2009 (UTC)
1543? How did you come up with that number? – IbLeo (talk) 13:40, 8 September 2009 (UTC)
First 500; second 500; third 500; and the odd 43. – B.hoteptalk13:45, 8 September 2009 (UTC)
Right. It works, but it's quite awkward when you have thousands of articles. Also, counting the lines on the last screen is tedious when you have more than 100 :-) By the way, I am not planning to modify this particular template. For the moment the question is completely theoretical. – IbLeo (talk) 16:22, 8 September 2009 (UTC)
AWB says 1513, not 43. Strange. — neuro(talk) 17:08, 8 September 2009 (UTC)
I think my manual count included pages in all namespaces (inc. userspace). The difference was, um, yes, about 30. ;) And yes, IbLeo, it is very time consuming. – B.hoteptalk18:19, 8 September 2009 (UTC)
That's weird. It's not supposed to do that unless I filter it explicitly. :| — neuro(talk) 05:43, 9 September 2009 (UTC)

On your advice I will probably sign up for AWB. It looks like a cool editor that might help me in other tasks than counting article links. Thanks a lot, all three of you, you have been very helpful. – IbLeo (talk) 18:40, 8 September 2009 (UTC)

I have put you on the AWB approval list. Enjoy. :) – B.hoteptalk22:11, 8 September 2009 (UTC)
Oh, thanks! However, I just read that in order to use AWB's database scanner – which I suspect is the case for such a task – I need to download a file that takes up 21 GB. Unfortunately I don't have that much space left on my harddisk :-( So I guess I will be using AWB for other tasks, at least in an initial phase. – IbLeo (talk) 05:11, 9 September 2009 (UTC)
You don't need to download anything, the database scanner is for big tasks that need to be done that would take too long to download piece by piece from enwiki (so you download a dump and tell it what to do, then replicate it on the live enwiki). :) — neuro(talk) 05:44, 9 September 2009 (UTC)
I see. Thanks. I will keep you posted in this space to let you know if I can figure it out then. Thanks again. – IbLeo (talk) 06:40, 9 September 2009 (UTC)

Review from The Rider Online in the No More Stories... article

I took a look at what you've done on Wikipedia and it's all really great, I appreciate it. However, you deleted a review from Mew's No More Stories from the source The Rider Online. I was the author. I understand you deleted because "these guys are only students," but I assure you that I am as professional a music critic as they come, and I really know my stuff. Feel free to read my articles. However, I would really like it if you did not delete my reviews, even though my current publication source may seem unprofessional. I am most certainly not. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Alexandernumbertwo (talkcontribs) 01:47, 12 September 2009 (UTC)

First, thanks for the praise of my work :-) and thanks for raising your issue with me. I certainly agree that your review of No More Stories... is well written. As you probably already know, the criteria for including reviews in album articles are that they must be "written by professional music journalists or DJs, or found within any online or print publication having a (paid or volunteer) editorial and writing staff". I only have your own word that you are a professional music journalist, but do you have any reliable sources to back up this claim? – IbLeo (talk) 05:53, 12 September 2009 (UTC)
PS: Please also remember to sign your posts. – IbLeo (talk) 06:00, 12 September 2009 (UTC)
Sorry I forgot to sign. I am new to the whole editing-Wikipedia thing. But thank you for leading me to the criteria for proffesional reviews, and it seems clear to me that my site does fit the criteria. We are a completely volunteer organization of young journalists and editors, our advisor just happens to be a school teacher. We have both a print and an online edition. So it seems to me that the review should stay. Alexandernumbertwo (talk) 16:17, 12 September 2009 (UTC)
Please be advised that I have removed your review again. First of all, posting a link to your own article is considered as link spam and represents a conflict of interest, both of which are against Wikipedia's policies. Wikipedia is not a soapbox. Secondly, WP:ALBUM prescribes a maximum of 10 professional reviews, and there were 13. I removed the 3 that from the least notable sites. – IbLeo (talk) 20:37, 16 September 2009 (UTC)

Willy DeVille template

I noticed you are designing a Willy DeVille template. Thanks for doing that. It was on my list of things to do. Would you consider putting a "Mink DeVille" section in the template? Or listing the Mink DeVille albums, as in "Cabretta (Mink DeVille)"? You'd be surprised at how many people don't know the connection between Mink DeVille and Willy DeVille.

About the compilation albums, it's impossible to keep track of all of them. I noticed a French one the other day called "Anthologie." I'd like to put together a comprehensive list of compilation albums, but it will require some detective work. Any help you can give is welcome. SpanishStroll (talk) 21:04, 7 October 2009 (UTC)

I have actually prepared both Template:Mink DeVille and Template:Willy DeVille. The former obviously contains a link to Willy DeVille as first member and I plan to put it on the Mink DeVille article as well as all their albums. The latter will go on the Willy DeVille albums. Both of them will go on the Willy DeVille article. And both of them contains a link to the discography. That should make the link clear I would think. Yeah, there are a lot of compilations out there. Missing ones can always be added, but we shouldn't repeat re-issues, they are not considered separate releases. – IbLeo (talk) 21:18, 7 October 2009 (UTC)
These templates look great! SpanishStroll (talk) 21:21, 7 October 2009 (UTC)
Thanks, I appreciate :-) I will proceed with adding them to the articles now. I would also like to do some work on the discography, like adapting it to the WP:DISCOG project standards, and possibly add some chart positions. As you say, some detective work is required, but if we work together we can probably get a long way. – IbLeo (talk) 21:28, 7 October 2009 (UTC)
Done. I have added the two navboxes to all the articles as appropriate - and now I'm off to bed! – IbLeo (talk) 21:54, 7 October 2009 (UTC)

Willy DeVille discography

  The Rock music Barnstar
I hereby award you this barnstar for your impressive work on Willy DeVille articles, especially the Willy DeVille discography. Great work! SpanishStroll (talk) 21:07, 19 October 2009 (UTC)

Hey, thanks! It was quite a detective work to dig up all the chart positions but I think I got reliable sources for all of them. Where I am a bit unsure is on the singles; especially on the sequence from those that came off the same album. I might also have missed some that didn't chart anywhere. Feel free to complete if you come up with something else. – IbLeo (talk) 21:14, 19 October 2009 (UTC)

You must have put a lot of work into it. Here's a source you may be interested in: The Great Indie Discography, by Martin Charles Strong. It lists some singles that aren't in the Wikipedia DeVille discography: "Cadillac Walk" (December 1977), "Guardian Angel" (June 1978), "This Must Be the Night" (April 1980), "Lipstick Traces" (June 1980), "Heat of the Moment/Pullin' My String" (September 1980), "Pick Up the Pieces" (April 1984), and "In the Heart of the City" (June 1985). I have also seen a single of "Storybook Love" (1987). And this Website also lists some singles that aren't in the discography: "Demasiado Corazon / Spanish Stroll (Live)" (1993) and "Storybook Love." DeVille put out so many different records in so many different countries, it's hard to keep track of it all. Once again, thanks for working on the discography. It really looks good. SpanishStroll (talk) 21:41, 19 October 2009 (UTC)
Thanks again :-). I have have replicated this discussion over at Talk:Willy DeVille discography#New version with singles.2C EPs and sourced chart positions as I feel that your last entry is in the general interest to the development of the article. Let's continue over there. Cheers. – IbLeo (talk) 10:53, 20 October 2009 (UTC)

Willy DeVille studio albums

You asked for Willy DeVille studio album recommendations. Start with Le Chat Bleu, which everyone acknowledges is his masterpiece. Backstreets of Desirea mid-career album, is also a good one. I am very fond of Victory Mixture, which is a cover album of old New Orleans R&B songs from the 1958-1964 period. His first album, Cabretta, was great -- everyone likes that one. I also like Where Angels Fear to Tread, which is a great Latin-accented R&B album. BTW, I'm very busy with work right now, so I can't work on the discography. But I'll get to it when I have some free time. Again, thanks for all your help with DeVille articles. SpanishStroll (talk) 20:18, 28 October 2009 (UTC)

Thanks a lot for taking the time for this. When I said "Willy DeVille" I actually meant it literally. I am already quite well equipped in Mink DeVille studio albums. I bought Coup de grace and Where Angels Fear to Tread back in the 80's when they came out, I still have the LPs and I love them! Earlier this year I got Cadillac Walk which covers the Capitol era (including Cabretta and Le chat bleu) quite well I would think, although I am looking for the latter on vinyl which might take me a while. I had already spotted Backstreets of Desire as a potential next-buy, but it also seems pretty difficult to find. On Amazon.fr it is only sold secondhand on the marketplace, and people ask an awful lot of money for it. The same is true for Victory Mixture, although it is less expensive. So I might take your advice and look out for that one. Again, thanks for your advice, I really appreciate. Regarding the Willy DeVille articles, I have fun working with you and that's for me what it's all about here. I got a few ideas for improvements in mind. I will eventually bring them up on the respective talk pages for discussion. – IbLeo (talk) 21:47, 28 October 2009 (UTC)

Sure What I was referencing before about you knowing something I didn't was whether or not {{Album}} somehow breaks a field in a template. Again, as far as I'm concerned you can change all of them if you want or none; have at it. I was really just asking to ensure that I didn't insert a broken template on a page. —Justin (koavf)TCM17:38, 17 March 2010 (UTC)

Albums by artist categorization

Hi there IbLeo, you recently took part of a discussion at WT:ALBUMS regarding the Albums by artist categorization. I would like you invite you to further comment on the subsection Albums by genre and nationality, as no one has contributed to the discussion lately. I would really appreciate comments, as I would like to get this proposal off the ground. Regards. — ξxplicit 19:23, 8 May 2010 (UTC)

Notability check of music review site

Heya IbLeo. You appear to be somewhat of an authority when it comes to deciding which review sites are "professional" and which aren't. A while ago I posted a request to add Metal Storm to the professional list and as Metal Temple has been added recently I see not much of a problem that we would be accepted as professional as well. Due to COI I can't just add us to the list though, so it would be grand if you could take a look at the request and act accordingly :) Cheers! Promonex (talk) 11:54, 9 May 2010 (UTC)

Template:Track listing width discussion

Hi, I just checked the talk page of the track listing template, to find that there has been a rather lengthy discussion regarding its width. Since I've been out of the loop for a while now, could I bother you for a brief summary of the proceedings and respective arguments? – Cyrus XIII (talk) 00:59, 20 May 2010 (UTC)

Well, as you say it's a rather lengthy discussion, and I am not sure it's easy to summarize in a few words. I will try anyway. Basically, User:Wikid77 argues that the current version of the template does not work well for people with low screen resolutions, hand-held devices and readers with larger text sizes. With my standard computer configuration, it took me quite a while to figure out what he meant, but finally I recognized that he has a point when I reduced the width of my window and looked at the template test cases. I believe Wikid77 is trying to solve this auto-widening issue. First with the new version in /sandbox2, where he adds a number of new parameters (including several ones that has nothing to do with the table width issue) that he until now has omitted to document despite several requests to do so. Furthermore, he proposed to gradually deploy this new template in the article space, which was strongly opposed by several editors at the end of this section. Despite the objections, he went away and did it anyway, which lead to this discussion over at WT:ALBUM and a forked template {{Tracklist custom}} which I am personally not really pleased about. Last episode so far is Template_talk:Track_listing#Proposal_to_adjust_tables_by_width_parameter where Wikid77 is working in /Sandbox on a simpler approach to solve the autowidening issue without adding all those extra parameters. I personally don't feel that a satisfactory solution has been found yet. You are more than welcome to step in with your expertise and help sort out this quite complicated situation. – IbLeo(talk) 12:12, 20 May 2010 (UTC)

Use of {{Track listing}} in Sweet albums

Views

  • First I changed very little just the layout of the track listing it is a cleaner look, more professional than the basic one.
  • Red-links are a way to add new pages if someone wants to yes using it two much is not right.
  • "All lyrics written by this is away to save space so you do not have to re-list it over and over onetime is enough.

While you are more than welcome to contribute in a positive way to Wikipedia, I will at this point have to revert your edits for the above reasons. Please read WP:ALBUM for further guidelines about album articles.

  • I know that I am welcome to contribute in anyway it seems like you want it your way or no way.

There's a heated discussion over at the Music MOS. If you get a chance could you take a look. Thanks --Jubileeclipman 23:57, 13 June 2010 (UTC)

Problems with upload of File:Le Retour de Gérard Lambert.jpeg

Thanks for uploading File:Le Retour de Gérard Lambert.jpeg. You don't seem to have said where the image came from, who created it, or provided a license tag. MJ's signature

Hi, I am curious to know where you got this signature from, and the date, please reply to my email account direct this is very important to me:I opened a account here just to get this information, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template_talk:Infobox_musical_artist/Archive_7#Signature taaj2001@yahoo.com Kindest Regards —Preceding unsigned comment added by Taaj2001 (talkcontribs) 00:49, 6 December 2010 (UTC)

If you are referring to Michael Jackson's signature, you got the wrong person. Look at the image to see who provided it: File:Michael Jackson signature.svg. This is Wikipedia, I don't email people except in extremely rare circumstances and this is not one of them. – IbLeo(talk) 06:34, 6 December 2010 (UTC)
