Writing biographies

It is not easy. Such article get deleted quickly for various reasons. This can be avoided if you take a few precautionary steps first before you start writing

• do a little research. Pick one subject, such as Claude Alvin Villee Jr.
• read the one source you have found and write down all the notable things you have found out about him. In this case, (from a very quick scan I did of here):

• five decades teaching
• first text-book (year of first printing?) translated into five languages
• written or collaborated on 350 books/papers. Find a list and write down 10 of these as selected works
• chaired the Committee on Honors in a Special Field
• colleague of Dwain Hagerman
• champion women's equality at Harvard medical school
• raised the funds that launched the Laboratory of Human Reproduction and Reproductive Biology (LHRRB) with the help of Duncan Reid and Deans Burwell and Berry
• had perfect pitch

• now for each one of the above, you need to find at least one more reliable source for the statement. If you cannot find another source, scratch a line through the item. If at this point you do not have more than one line unscratched, you have a poor subject for wikipedia. Choose another subject and go back to the beginning. Doing it this way, you will not keep getting articles being deleted. If you get past this point, you will be writing an article
• next (you are nearly ready to start writing) review what you have with another similar person that is already on wikipedia. In this case, start with Category:Molecular_biologists; picking a few at random: Maurice Wilkins, Ehud Gazit. Choose your own example. The point is, choose someone as close as you can to the type of person you are writing about
• take the best example from another article and in one editing session copy the entire example article into your new article and remove everything about that other person but leaving the structure intact (such as infobox, section headings). That way you have something to work on
• next start adding facts in the {{infobox scientist}} (the code at the top of the article) such as date of birth, death (if dead), field of study, colleagues, students
• next add everything you had in your original list that has more than one reliable source. Reference the source using in-line references. See reliable sources and referencing
• next look for words that can be wikilinked in your article such as biologist. To wikilink, put a pair of square brackets around your word or words such as [[scientist]]
• finally ask another editor for help to improve the article further. I will gladly help

Persisting copyright problems

Hi. I'm afraid the Leonard Case, Jr. article you wrote is a copyright infringement of [1], since the text is too closely paraphrased. While facts are not copyrightable, creative elements of presentation - including both structure and language - are. For an example of close paraphrasing, consider the following. The source says:

Case wrote long descriptive letters to his friends while traveling and published numerous poems. In 1860 the Atlantic Monthly printed his "Treasure Trove," a mock-heroic narrative poem, which was published in book form late in 1872, dated 1873.

The article says:

Case wrote long descriptive letters and poems when he was traveling. His mock-heroic narrative poem, "Treasure Trove", was printed and published by the Atlantic Monthly in late 1872.

There are other passages that similarly follow too closely. You retain fragmented literal similarity in language here and also appropriate their organization of content.

So that it will not constitute a derivative work, this article should be rewritten in the temporary space that is now linked from the article's front. The essay Wikipedia:Close paraphrasing contains some suggestions for rewriting that may help avoid these issues. The article Wikipedia:Wikipedia Signpost/2009-04-13/Dispatches, while about plagiarism rather than copyright concerns, also contains some suggestions for reusing material from sources that may be helpful, beginning under "Avoiding plagiarism".

Alternatively, if the material can be verified to be public domain or permission is provided, we can use the original text with proper attribution.

I have done so. Please be careful in how you use sources. It's really imperative that you learn to rewrite from scratch to avoid further such issues. If English is not your first language (I don't know that to be the case, but I see you are very active here), this can be particularly challenging. Basically, it's like this: you can't use their language (even if you rearrange it) and you can't use their organization (even if you change the language). You have to use your own organization and language in order to avoid being too close to them. The only time you can use their language and order is if you are quoting, and you have to mark your quotes very plainly with quotation marks and put a reference right next to them. We are required to keep our quotes brief and to have some good reason for using them (see WP:NFC), not just because they said it well. :) It helps to have a lot of sources to use, since you're less likely to take from one that way. When you don't have a lot of sources, it can help to leave out details and stay pretty basic. When you finish writing something, read over it and your source and ask yourself if they sound similar. Looking at some of the articles you've edited, you don't happen to be able to read Mandarin at all? I'm trying to find someone who could do me a favour by confirming the translations of a couple of unusual words, and my own Mandarin Chinese is pretty minimal. Thanks! I'm doing an expansion of the battlements article in user space at the moment. I've found two references to unique Chinese medieval battlement equipment in the (admittedly not extensive) English literature. The first is wooden and cloth shields called chhii, which were positioned/fixed on the battlements to provide protection for the soldiers. The second are chieh-kao, screens of reeds mounted on a long piece of pivoted wood, which could then be swung in front of a battlement, or set light to and dipped down on the pole onto enemy siege towers to make them catch fire.

What I wasn't sure about from the source, though, is whether these two Chinese names have any literal meaning. For example, the bit of a European battlement called a machicolation literally means "neck crusher" in French, which makes sense because it was used for dropping stones on people's heads. I couldn't work out if the names for those two bits of equipment meant something in particular, or if they were just their names (e.g. a gate just means "a gate" in English - it doesn't have any other meaning).

In the meantime, I shall continue to try and find some sort of further literature on Chinese battlements - I'm having real trouble finding English language sources... Hchc2009 (talk) 07:22, 24 September 2011 (UTC)

ArbCom 2022 Elections voter message

Hello! Voting in the 2022 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 12 December 2022. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.
