Welcome to the 2024 WikiCup!

Happy New Year and Happy New WikiCup! The 2024 competition has just begun and all article creators, expanders, improvers and reviewers are welcome to take part. Even if you are a novice editor you should be able to advance to at least the second round, improving your editing skills as you go. If you have already signed up, your submissions page can be found here. If you have not yet signed up, you can add your name here and the judges will set up your submissions page ready for you to take part. Any questions on the scoring, rules or anything else should be directed to one of the judges, or posted to the WikiCup talk page. Signups will close on 31 January, and the first round will end on 26 February; the 64 highest scorers at that time will move on to round 2. The judges for the WikiCup this year are: Cwmhiraeth (talk · contribs · email), Epicgenius (talk · contribs · email), and Frostly (talk · contribs · email). Good luck! About me expanding the Ifish article

@Happily888, I have expanded the Ifish article and added sources from Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Ifish, that Cunard suggested, including ones about the program's Logie Award for Most Popular Lifestyle Program nominations in 2012 and 2013. Do you think the article needs more expansion? Yours sincerely, TechGeek105 (his talk page) 05:41, 4 January 2024 (UTC)

@TechGeek105: I think the article has been expanded enough and that it looks great. Thanks for your work expanding it! Happily888 (talk) 05:46, 4 January 2024 (UTC)

@Happily888, I created the 2024 in Australian television article on 2 January 2024, using content from 2023 in Australian television, see that article's history for attribution. Does that article need expansion? Yours sincerely, TechGeek105 (his talk page) 05:14, 8 January 2024 (UTC)

About improving the 2022 in Australian television article

@Happily888, I have tried to improve the 2022 in Australian television article by adding all the channels that either launched or closed in 2022, examples being SBS WorldWatch and Prime7. Can you please finish the improvements, while I take a break from Wikipedia for 2 hours? The improvements I have made, did not add any more Australian television shows that debuted or ended in 2022, examples being After the Verdict and Snackmasters. Reverts in Australian Survivor edits

Hello. I’d like to address the issue with the edits that you have reverted. Unfortunately, the tables that you are reverting fail to comply with MOS:ACCESS and MOS:COLOR:

Ensure that color is not the only method used to communicate important information. Especially, do not use colored text or background unless its status is also indicated using another method, such as an accessible symbol matched to a legend, or footnote labels. Otherwise, blind users or readers accessing Wikipedia through a printout or device without a color screen will not receive that information.

When I presented these edits, you said it was "my ideals" and asked for a consensus among editors. There is one already: Survivor task force (based on Wikipedia_talk:Manual_of_Style/Television/Archive_12#RfC_about_elimination-style_reality_programs). Many users have agreed that it is important to follow Wikipedia's MOS for each reality show, regardless of which version it may be.

Please take this information into consideration. This is for the better of Wikipedia, not for personal reasons whatsoever. Freddy7GL (talk) 17:10, 1 February 2024 (UTC)

Please note that I have already stated that the Survivor task force is a WikiProject related to the American TV series and therefore its discussion page isn't the right venue for making a consensus for this article and it therefore doesn't apply, especially when those series haven't been notified of the discussion when it was occurring. I agree with the consensus on following MOS guideline, however formats which follow MOS are not all the same and international series of franchises do not have to have the exact same tables as the original series, especially because the series are different and therefore discussions need to take place before making major changes to articles. WikiCup 2024 February newsletter

The 2024 WikiCup is off to a flying start, with 135 participants. This is the largest number of participants we have seen since 2017.

Our current leader is newcomer   Generalissima (submissions), who has one FA on John Littlejohn (preacher) and 10 GAs and 12 DYKs mostly on New Zealand coinage and Inuit figures. Here are some more noteworthy scorers:

As a reminder, competitors may submit work for the first round until 23:59 (UTC) on 27 February, and the second round starts 1 March. Remember that only the top 64 scoring competitors will make it through to the second round; currently, competitors need at least 15 points to progress. If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, and you hope to get it promoted before the end of the round, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. However, please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAN, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs which could otherwise be caused by the Cup. As ever, questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup and the judges (Cwmhiraeth (talk · contribs), Epicgenius (talk · contribs), and Frostly (talk · contribs)) are reachable on their talk pages. WikiCup 2024 March newsletter

The first round of the 2024 WikiCup ended at 23:59 (UTC) on 27 February. Everyone with at least 30 points moved on to Round 2, the highest number of points required to advance to the second round since 2014. Due to a six-way tie for the 64th-place spot, 67 contestants have qualified for Round 2.

The following scorers in Round 1 all scored more than 300 points:

In this newsletter, the judges would like to pay a special tribute to   Vami_IV (submissions), who unfortunately passed away this February. At the time of his death, he was the second-highest-scoring competitor. Outside the WikiCup, he had eight other featured articles, five A-class articles, eight other good articles, and two Four Awards. Vami also wrote an essay on completionism, a philosophy in which he deeply believed. If you can, please join us in honoring his memory by improving one of the articles on his to-do list.

Remember that any content promoted after 27 February but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, feel free to review one of the nominations listed on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed. Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages. Good luck! Love Island (2015 TV series) series 12

You have changed the name of Love Island (2015 TV series) series 11 and this is incorrect.

Love Island: All Stars was a spin-off series and sources refer to it as much. As you can see here ITVX list it completely separate to the main series [1] and sources refer to All Stars as the "first series", just like I'm a Celebrity... South Africa. Your reversion to my edits for Gadigal

Hello there

I have tried to engage you in discussion on the Talk page a couple of times but you have not responded and continue to undo my edits while leaving edit summaries which do not explain why you have reverted sourced information. I have removed unsourced information which has nothing to do with the Gadigal and have replaced it with reliably sourced information. I have explained these changed in detail on the Talk page. Rather than simply revert all my changes could you please discuss this on the article talk page and justify your reversions?

Thank you Aemilius Adolphin (talk) 02:23, 5 June 2024 (UTC)

I didn't undo your edits, I've just been doing copy-edits of your poor edits as you can see from the edit summaries which I assume you haven't read properly; also you do not WP:OWN the article. You're the user who has been reverting my edits whilst not justifying your reversions, its the norm on Wikipedia to keep status quo when a contentious statement needs to be discussed. Happily888 (talk) 02:37, 5 June 2024 (UTC)
Ok, my apologies. The edit history showed a reversion and your edit summary didn't really explain what my "poor editing" was. I notice that you restored the following sentence: "The 1789 smallpox epidemic was estimated to have killed about 53% of the local Dharug population". The source is diven as Cumston's History of Small Pox in Australia. No page number is given, but I checked the source and it says nothing of the kind. (Apart from the fact that 53% is a pretty precise estimate given that we still have no idea how many Aboriginal people there were in Sydney in 1788.) That's why I changed it to: "The 1789 smallpox epidemic was estimated to have killed about half of the Sydney Aboriginal population". The source for this is the Sydney Barani website cited. Would you please revert back to my version which is properly sourced. Aemilius Adolphin (talk) 03:19, 5 June 2024 (UTC)
Please note that you have restored an earlier (2002) version of the Barani website. The most recent version here should be used. Also note that the restored version does not contain sources which confirm the statement: " "The 1789 smallpox epidemic was estimated to have killed about 53% of the local Dharug population" Would you please use the latest version of the website and my text which is an accurate summary of the relevant part? The third round of the 2024 WikiCup ended on 28 June. As with Round 2, this round was competitive: each of the 16 contestants who advanced to Round 4 scored at least 256 points.

The following editors all scored more than 400 points in Round 3:

The full scores for round 3 can be seen here. Caught's release date fields

In the television infobox, either the released field or the first aired and last aired fields need to be used. Currently the article is using released and last aired fields, which places it in the maintenance category of Category:Pages using infobox television with nonstandard dates. If the series has been cancelled, which I cannot find information on that, it only needs to use the released field. If the series is ongoing, it needs to use the first aired and last aired fields, even if all of the first season episodes were released the same day. To avoid an edit war, I will leave it up to you which choice is correct. Aspects (talk) 14:43, 4 July 2024 (UTC)

Neither Template:Infobox television nor Template:Infobox television season say to not use the released and last aired fields at the same time. It does however state to not use the first aired field when a series releases all their episodes at the same time. As well as to not use the released and first aired fields at the same time. This seems like a case where either the maintenance category needs to be fixed or a template talk page discussion should occur. Happily888 (talk) 15:09, 4 July 2024 (UTC)

  • Global blocks may now target accounts as well as IP's. Administrators may locally unblock when appropriate.
  • Users wishing to permanently leave may now request "vanishing" via Special:GlobalVanishRequest. Processed requests will result in the user being renamed, their recovery email being removed, and their account being globally locked.
