1RR experiment

1RR on all pages begins now, expires Tuesday. Failure to adhere to the terms will incur, let's say, in a week-long block. Just don't forget. But if you do forget, you are allowed to self-revert, so don't stress it. El_C 07:36, 24 March 2017 (UTC)

Progress update - Good news is I have started; Bad news is there's more work now then when I started... (don't panic, it's mild)

Thought I'd leave you a note that I've started working on the various modules and templates I need to get you the overarching template that you desire. For that matter I have good and bad news. The bad news is that I underestimated the number of templates that I'd need to make this work. The good news is that the templates I need are single sentence and just invoke one of the big module's functions. The module for color that I'm building is multi-function, but, I need a template to invoke each function separately. It's mostly just a template to invoke the correct colour. So one template invokes the first color, the second will invoke the second, the third the third, and the fourth the fourth. Thanks for all your patience. I have the module/data page up and running, I hope to get the header template (game log) up and running tomorrow. Then I will work on getting the big module at least partially ready by the end of the week. I'll do some testing on the weekend so that I can get the colors to work. From there it's just a matter of converting the table into a simpler template. I'll give you a second update on Friday. Cheers, Mr rnddude (talk) 17:15, 11 April 2017 (UTC)

  • New update - I said Friday, but, many things have happened. Alright, so the module is live as a "pre-alpha". So far I have a functioning header template, however, it's not in the style that you would like. For the time-being I haven't been able to work out how to manipulate the module so that the first three colors are used instead of the first two. Below are a few examples of what it looks like with different teams and different parameters in effect; Mr rnddude (talk) 16:06, 12 April 2017 (UTC)
{{NHL game log start|team=Anaheim Ducks|pre-season=yes|year_end=2017}}
{{NHL game log section|team=Anaheim Ducks|TITLE=Pre-season|first=yes
| home_wins = 3
| home_losses = 3
| home_overtime/shootout_losses = 1
| road_wins = 3
| road_losses = 2
| road_overtime/shootout_losses = 2
}}

This is Mirela. I am on a wikibreak and I used the enforcer, so I can't log in. I just wanted to thank you for your help. Have you thought about reaching out to active users with expertise on Wikipedia's templates? Maybe that should help. 96.20.100.190 (talk) 16:36, 12 April 2017 (UTC)
All good about the wikibreak. Modules and Templates are somewhat different. I'd need somebody who is good with modules. If I can't work out how to manipulate it over the next couple days then I'll be try posting on Lua:Help talk page. It's really about identifying that one line that is messing with you. I spent an hour trying to figure out why the module wasn't functioning at all and it was literally that I had typed "stripwhitesearch" instead of "stripwhitespace" in one line. It's a fairly small module, whatever is causing it is one a page that is shorter than this thread. Mr rnddude (talk) 16:44, 12 April 2017 (UTC)
Lol, it happens to me all the time. Let me know of any other updates should you have any. 96.20.100.190 (talk) 16:58, 12 April 2017 (UTC)
I am a genius. Behold the now accurate game log header with the glorious team tri-colours. I'll probably have to re-order the colours for some teams so that we don't have contrast issues (i.e. dark brown background with black letters), but, other than that we should be good to go. I am immensely pleased that by sheer luck I found a way to manipulate the template instead of the module. I've also started making the game log template. I'll be cutting out some of the useless fluff and deleting one template that I won't need. I've crested the mountain and it should be mostly smooth sailing from here. Mr rnddude (talk) 12:45, 14 April 2017 (UTC)
Just when I thought I had it all worked out. I have two problems, one that is my own fault which I am finally able to view for the first time on your page but it won't show up at Template:NHL game log start/doc - which I've already fixed - and the other which I haven't been able to fix in any way. The {{{4}}} expression should have substituted itself with "Pre-season" or any month inputted. It works on the similar NBA template, but, not at all on this one. I've spent several hours cleaning up tiny little errors, but, nothing is actually impacting on this. I don't think I have any errors left and it still doesn't work. Oh it's so frustrating having one minor thing between you and completion. Literally, if I could just get the switch expression to work your template would be ready. Maybe minor fiddling with colors and the such but otherwise all yours. I'll try get it to work tomorrow. Feel free to play around with colors and test the template out on your page. I'll let you know when it's article ready - hopefully tomorrow. Mr rnddude (talk) 17:18, 14 April 2017 (UTC)
@Mr rnddude: I think Template:NHL game log section is missing the recap section. Each game is recapped and sourced on the article. Unless your intention is including the schedule link from the team into the game log text as source? 96.20.100.190 (talk) 04:44, 16 April 2017 (UTC)
Ah... no I just missed the "pts" and "Recap" from the template. Mr rnddude (talk) 07:34, 16 April 2017 (UTC)
  • New Update; Can I get your review of the template. Any features I've missed or anything you'd like me to try and include for further simplification. This is a copy of the 2016-17 Montreal Canadiens Regular Season table for the month of October and November, except substituted with the templates refactored to purpose.

{{NHL game log end|MON|end_year=2017}}
  • Personally, I prefer the first style as it uses less space, but, the second style is quicker to follow. I can only really think of one (maybe two) more thing(s) that could be done that would make the article look cleaner with these tables. The first is to transclude the entire table from a template. Pros; Would take up no more than a couple lines of prose in the article - Cons; Would require three template pages per team per season; 3 templates (pre-season, regular season and playoffs) x 30 teams = 90 template pages per year. Note, there's 100 seasons in NHL history at this time (1917 to 2017) plus 9 seasons as the NHA, and then how many more going back to 1887 first AHAC season. Ok, this is assuming that everybody and their grandmother is happy with this style and it ends up being used NHL wide and not just for the Habs. The only other thing that comes to mind that might be possible is to have one more template for each game result which might reduce the length of each entry into a single line with fewer || and shorter links. Other than that, I can't think of anything more to do. Feel free to ping me if you have any ideas of your own. I might also be able to get the background to be automatically coloured based on the game result. Though, I can't promise that I'll be able to work out how to do this. I have an idea of how to code up a template that can read a game result and decide who won. It'd be something like "if a > b then game won" and "if b > a then game loss". The thing is, how do I factor in OT game loss into this. Sorta like if "a > b then game won", "if b > a then game loss", but, "if b > a and OT parameter filled, then game_overtime/shootout_loss". Oh yeah, and one more thing, I am trying to work out how to get the legend to fit in as well. I'll probably dump it into the "game log end" template and remove the schedule link or get them to work simultaneously. Cheers, Mr rnddude (talk) 11:19, 16 April 2017 (UTC)
Ahaha, it's okay. To reply to frankly lengthy post, I am not sure which template I prefer. The first is the one every season article uses (||); however, I also find it a bit confusing. They are too many bars. The second one seems to be easier to follow and they aren't so many bars. I am a little torn. I am not sure what you mean by "90 templates pages per year" since TV shows (and there are plenty of them) that have the episode table. I think 90 templates/year is nothing compared to over 500 TV show articles. As for the automatic wins and losses, I'm for it, but let's give the template a few before trying something new. I have nothing else to comment on. 96.20.100.190 (talk) 21:56, 17 April 2017 (UTC)

May 2017 WikiCup newsletter

The second round of the competition has now closed, with just under 100 points being required to qualify for round 3. YellowEvan just scraped into the next round with 98 points but we have to say goodbye to the thirty or so competitors who didn't achieve this threshold; thank you for the useful contributions you have made to the Cup and Wikipedia. Our top scorers in round 2 were:

  •   Cas Liber, led the field with five featured articles, four on birds and one on astronomy, and a total score of 2049, half of which came from bonus points.
  •   1989 was in second place with 826 points, 466 of which were bonus points. 1989 has claimed points mostly relating to anime and Japanese-related articles.
  •   Peacemaker67 took third place with two FAs, one GA and seven GARs, mostly on naval vessels or military personnel, scoring 543 points.
  • Other contestants who scored over 400 points were Freikorp, Carbrera, and Czar. Of course all these points are now wiped out and the 32 remaining contestants start again from zero in round 3.

Vivvt submitted the largest number of DYKs (30), and MBlaze Lightning achieved 13 articles at ITN. Carbrera claimed for 11 GAs and Argento Surfer performed the most GARs, having reviewed 11. So far we have achieved 38 featured articles and a splendid 132 good articles. Commendably, 279 GARs have been achieved so far, more than double the number of GAs.

So, on to the third round. Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 2 but before the start of round 3 can be claimed in round 3. Remember too that you must claim your points within 10 days of "earning" them. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points equally.

If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article nominations, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to help keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. New Page Review - Newsletter No.4

Hello Callmemirela,

Since rolling out the right in November, just 6 months ago, we now have 800 reviewers, but the backlog is still mysteriously growing fast. If every reviewer did just 55 reviews, the 22,000 backlog would be gone, in a flash, schwoop, just like that!

But do remember: Rather than speed, quality and depth of patrolling and the use of correct CSD criteria are essential to good reviewing. Do not over-tag. Make use of the message feature to let the creator know about your maintenance tags. See the tutorial again HERE. Get help HERE.

Stay up to date with recent new page developments and have your say, read THIS PAGE.

Graphic Ratings

And the graphic of [1] or [2] etc... is it sourced ? Really ? Why are you for his graphics and not the others  ? It would be necessary to stop a little bit to do "series favoritism" and to choose which one should have or not, each series is free to obtain, moreover the principle of Wikipedia is to teach us things and there Has nothing wrong with having a fluid graphic and understandable under the eyes.

Sorry for my english --178.197.231.74 (talk) 13:15, 27 June 2017 (UTC)

I actually didn't bother to check their contributions again, so I wasn't aware that other TV series had it. I was also busy with another discussion and on my way to school. Actually, readability is very important, which is why we have WP:COLOR. Callmemirela 🍁 {Talk} 13:19, 27 June 2017 (UTC)

WikiCup 2017 July newsletter

The third round of the competition has finished in a flurry of last minute activity, with 288 points being required to qualify for round 4. It was a hotly competitive round with all but four of the contestants exceeding the 106 points that was necessary to proceed to round 4 last year. Coemgenus and Freikorp tied on 288, and both have been allowed to proceed, so round 4 now has one pool of eight competitors and one of nine.

Round 3 saw the achievement of a 26-topic Featured topic by MPJ-DK as well as 5 featured lists and 13 featured articles. PanagiotisZois and SounderBruce achieved their first ever featured articles. Carbrera led the GA score with 10, Tachs achieved 17 DYKs and MBlaze Lightning 10 In the news items. There were 167 DYKs, 93 GARs and 82 GAs overall, this last figure being higher than the number of GAs in round 2, when twice as many people were taking part. Even though contestants performed more GARs than they achieved GAs, there was still some frustration at the length of time taken to get articles reviewed.

As we start round 4, we say goodbye to the fifteen or so competitors who didn't quite make it; thank you for the useful contributions you have made to the Cup and Wikipedia. Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 3 but before the start of round 4 can be claimed in round 4. Remember too that you must claim your points within 10 days of "earning" them (some people have fallen foul of this rule and the points have been removed).

If you are concerned that your nomination, whether it be for a good article, a featured process, or anything else, will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. It would be helpful if this list could be cleared of any items no longer relevant. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! Copy edit tag on Lauren Southern

Well, I went through and did a quick ce of the page and it should be good to go. But I think you may have been premature in tagging because there was actually not that much that required revision. ‡ Єl Cid, Єl Caɱ̩peador ᐁT₳LKᐃ 15:41, 6 July 2017 (UTC)

@El cid, el campeador: Nothing wrong with tagging a copyedit template. It just needed a little work and it could have been easily removed. I don't see how it's premature? Ps: I love your signature. Callmemirela 🍁 talk 20:13, 6 July 2017 (UTC)

Signature

Hi, I just voted below you in an RFA. I use this syntax highlighter, and your signature caused it to highlight everything below your signature, making the highlighting useless. Could you please swap the final span and font tags in your final talk page link (so it reads talk</span></font>]])? The highlighter expects all html tags to be closed in the reverse order they are opened. Thanks. kennethaw88talk 18:39, 8 July 2017 (UTC)

New Page Reviewer Newsletter

Hello Callmemirela, thank you for your efforts reviewing new pages!

Backlog update:

  • The new page backlog is currently at 18,511 pages. We have worked hard to decrease from over 22,000, but more hard work is needed! Please consider reviewing even just a few pages a a day.
  • Some editors are committing to work specifically on patrolling new pages on 15 July. If you have not reviewed new pages in a while, this might be a good time to be involved. Please remember that quality of patrolling is more important than quantity, that the speedy deletion criteria should be followed strictly, and that ovetagging for minor issues should be avoided.

Technology update:

  • Several requests have been put into Phabractor to increase usability of the New Pages Feed and the Page Curation toolbar. For more details or to suggest improvements go to Wikipedia:Page Curation/Suggested improvements
  • The tutorial has been updated to include links to the following useful userscripts. If you were not aware of them, they could be useful in your efforts reviewing new pages:
