Approval of alternate vpbot client

Hello there! I'm writing on the occasion that I have decided to pick up work on an alternate (and possibly multiplatform) client for the VP2 network. While I know that Eagle is writing a client of his own, I know it's Java-based. Since I have recently problems with JVM on my Ubuntu box, I'd like to write a pythonized version or maybe a plugin for my favourite Xchat. Yet, while Ethereal-sniffing communication between the clients and the bot (I need to work out the protocol's details) I came across User:Sagaciousuk, who (to say the least) didn't find the idea worth pursuing. He kicked me from the rc channel and revoked my approval citing "being precautious" and needing you to approve of it. So, let's. I hereby seek your approval and blessing. My project may well fail due to lack of time, but can I please at least have a shot? :-) Regards, Misza13 20:00, 14 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Richwales unable to get VandalProof to work (login fails)

Hi. Despite repeated attempts, I am completely unable to get VandalProof to work for me at all. Every time, it says that my login request has failed (after a long wait for retrieval of the user list). I've tried launching VP while logged in to my Wikipedia account on both Firefox and IE. I've also logged in to Wikipedia via the link in the VP page (by clicking the link in the yellow box which offers suggestions of what to do if logging in fails), but I still end up with the same "log-in request failed" error. Xyrael tried some things to fix the problem, but none of them worked. I'm trying to use version 1.2.2 of VP. Can you help? Richwales 16:07, 19 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Hi. Is there any hope that this problem will ever be fixed? If not, I guess I'll just forget about the idea of using VP. Richwales 17:45, 23 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

can't log in to VP

Hello. I seem to be unable to log into VP, and I have no idea why. Whenever I try to log in, VP either crashes or (more often) gives the "Your log-in request failed" message. The latter occurs after I first get the "login succesful" note from WP. The application worked just fine previously, but this problem appeared a while ago. --AAikio 17:27, 20 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Hi, I also had the problem you describe last night. However, I persisted, and on the third attempt, it did not crash. --BostonMA talk 18:20, 23 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

VandalProof waiting list

Whats going on with the VandalProof waiting list? Its been static for at least a week now. Nwwaew(My talk page) 19:30, 20 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

I noticed this too. I can go through the list for you, if you're too busy: just let me know what the requirements are (if more than the typical no vandalism, 250 main edits, etc.) and I'll make a list of who meets it and who doesn't. I'm not busy this weekend, got lots of time ;-) — Editor at Large(speak) 02:49, 21 October 2006 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, I was wondering why my application (and a bunch of others) from around a week back hadn't been approved. Ah well, it gave me the chance to well and truly (nearly 450 edits) be able to apply for it. SMC 07:41, 21 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

VandalProof modding

Hey AmiD

As you probably have noticed, since losing my mod abilities in VP the list has gotten a tad backlogged. Not sure if there's anything you can do, Eagle reports he has the same prob in 1.2.2 due to the space in our names.

But I really wanna help so maybe we start loading them onto VP 2??? At the least may I be enabled as a mod on VP2 plz? On IRC now if ya wanna chat Glen 00:34, 23 October 2006 (UTC) Reply

Wingin' It (Comedy)

I wrote an article on Wingin' It, a high school improv group in Carlisle, PA. I believe this article is notable enough to keep as Wingin' It is well known within central Pennsylvania. They are the first high school improv group in Central Pennsylvania and likely to be the model for improv comedy groups in surrounding high schools. They work with the group at Dickinson College and perform outside of school regularly. Any group of pioneers, however local, deserve at least a small mention.

Thank you for your time and effort. Phoenix15 23:49, 24 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Hello, i'm interesting with VandalProof. I would like to developpe it on WP FR. For the moment i translate the page in french to explain to french contributers what is VandalProof. Here is my user page on WP FR : fr:Utilisateur:Leag. I'm sysop since 6 months and i have more than 9500 mainspace edits. You can tell me what to do to make VandalProof working on French wikipedia. You can contact me here. Thanks Leag 16:34, 24 October 2006 (UTC) Excuse me for my bad english :)Reply

Well, I'm currently working on a program similar to VandalProof but with many more gizmos that will be usable on any foundation wiki, but it won't be available for another couple of months. However, VP1.3 has the ability to be easily adapted for multiple wikis. If you, or someone else, would be willing to spend some time translating string tables, I'd have no problem adapting it for frwiki. I'll try to get back to you in a few days, but if I don't, please feel free to nag me. AmiDaniel (talk) 18:00, 24 October 2006 (UTC)Reply
No problem for string tables translation. What should i do to request permission to use VandalProof for frwiki? I must register here or not? Thanks Leag 18:48, 24 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Wikipedia has clear procedures on moving pages. Other than in exceptional circumstances all pages should be moved by following the instructions on the Requested Moves page. Unilateral moves can trigger edit wars, break links and cause a lot of problems. Please stop unilaterally moving pages and follow the correct procedure.

Please do not edit the user pages of other contributors without their approval or consent. It may be seen as vandalism. If you would like to experiment, please visit the sandbox.

Please re-merge the Erich Heller article in the main space with the article on my user subpage, User:Prof02/Erich_Heller, from which you originally truncated it on 13 September 2006 — and thereby restore the full integrity of the article in userspace. Please do not archive this section before the dispute is resolved. — Prof02 07:03, 1 November 2006 (UTC)

Deletion reason for Google Talk (game)?

I was trying to find this page again today, and had to look at the history of Google Talk to find the link. Unfortunately the deletion log of the page doesn't give much information ("5 day-old uncontested PROD"). Could I get the original reason for the PROD, please?

By the way, WP:PROD currently says, "If you agree that the article should be deleted, delete it giving an informative deletion reason, such as that given by the nominator, not just expired prod.", and has had a similar message since at least a month before this deletion.--FunnyMan 21:45, 1 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

November Esperanza Newsletter

Program Feature: Admin Coaching (needs coaches!)
Admin Coaching needs coaches!!! If you are an administrator, or even a generally experienced user, do consider signing up to be a coach.

Admin Coaching, now being coordinated by HighwayCello, is a program for people who want help learning some of the more subtle aspects of Wikipedia policy and culture. People are matched with experienced users who are willing to offer coaching. The program is designed for people who have figured out the basics of editing articles; they're not newcomers any more, but they might want some help in learning new roles. In this way, Esperanza would help keep hope alive for Wikipedia because we would always be grooming the next generation of admins.

What's New?
The Tutorial Drive is a new Esperanza program! In an effort to make complicated processes on Wikipedia easier for everyone, Esperanza working to create and compile a list of tutorials about processes here on Wikipedia. Consider writing one!
A discussion on how Esperanza relates to the encyclopedia has been started; please add your thoughts.
Many thanks to MiszaBot, courtesy of Misza13, for delivering the newsletter.
  • The list of proposed programs has been updated, with some proposals being archived.
  • There is now a new program: the Tutorial Drive! Consider writing a tutorial on something you are good at doing on Wikipedia.
  • The suggestion of adding a cohesive look to all the Esperanza pages is being considered; join the discussion if you are interested!
  • In order to make a useful interlanguage welcome template, those involved in translation projects will be asked what English Wikipedia policies are most important and confusing to editors coming from other language Wikipedias.
  • A discussion of Esperanza's role in Wikipedia is being held, with all thoughts of all Esperanzians wanted!
  • Shreshth91 informed everyone that he will be leaving the Esperanza council as life is rather busy; his spot will be filled by the runner up from the last election, HighwayCello.

VP abuse/incompetence

Re: WP:VandalProof#Abuse "If you observe anyone making questionable edits with this tool, using this tool in an edit war, or otherwise misusing the tool, please contact me immediately."

One of your users use VP for violating WP:REVERT (wholesale reversion of an edit he objects to a part thereof, and wrongly at that) as well as WP:MOSDAB and WP:FAITH, plus all due process for checking actual vandalism before reverting and suppressing content. And I'm not the only one who seem to complain about wholesale reversions, this user seem to have fun or up his edit count by preying on wikignomes -- in other words, a gun in the hands of an incompetent.

(I dunno if your documentation mentions WP:REVERT and not throwing the baby with the bathwater, but if not, it should.)

AmiDaniel: This entire thing is about one revert I made last night, with a spam0 warning. There's lots to read through to get the gist of it (on my talk page, AN/I, Afd and here), and I imagine you might not care to. However, please feel free to make any constructive criticism about my use of VP on my talk page and I will of course take it very seriously. I'd like to suggest, however, that my previous record with VP (including this contentious edit) is hardly "a gun in the hands of an incompetent". Sigh. Cheers. Dina 15:40, 2 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Hi. Will you please revert to earlier edition Imelda Marcos. User Angeles deleted most of the older edition and wrote her own biased version. thanks.

Your changes to the CVU article are as pointless as what you deleted.

I was disappointed in the changes that you made to the CVU wiki article.

A cursory glance at the article shows that it doesn't have much or any substantial information about CVUHS. If you're going to make arm chair "improvements" to it you might as well delete the entire thing except the link to www.cvuhs.org.

Instead you went ahead and self righteously deleted the only thing that made the whole page worth reading. I don't know why, you probably thought you were doing a service to wikipedia. It must be a really dull world where they don't have humor = (.

I'm not looking to start an "edit war" with you over this, so I'm asking you to voluntarily return the CVU article to it's version before you changed it. Thanks!

Yes, I'm well aware of the policy on sprotect; however, these were unique circumstances (note that I removed over 180 vandalistic edits from the page, many of which were committed even while semiprotected, during four separate history purges). Unfortunately, the semi-protection was absolutely vital, and it may well have been better to even full protect for a short while. It remained s-protected for suprising only two hours, considering that the vandal was still at work well over an hour into the sprotection before he tired out. I'm sorry you disagree with my decision, but frankly I don't. AmiDaniel (talk) 16:20, 7 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Sorry, but archives are typically kept for historical purposes, and I do not believe it acceptable to blank it just because a remark was made that you found off-color. VandalProof corrupt user list

I've recently also gotten errors telling me that I'm not on the user list, and then later, that the list was corrupt. Thinking that it was something on my side, I traced VandalProof to the VandalProof "L" page, of which the encryption is apparently corrupted, perhaps due to something wrong with the reverts? Hope it gets fixed soon! Ddcc 02:22, 12 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Hello AmiDaniel, I recently applied for permission to use VandalProof, and that was before I read that you need 250 mainspace edits. I try to clean up vandalism when I can, but It'll be some time before I have that many edits, as I'm not on Wikipedia all the time. Is there anyway you could help me out with being able to use VandalProof? Thanks, Ardo 01:11, 14 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Access to VandleBot Source?

Hey AmiDaniel, I was wondering if you'd allow me the pleasure of porting VandleBot to Unix-like operating systems? If so, would it be possible if I could get my hands on the VandleBot VB source? If you're interested, I'm intending to use Gambas to write the port. Many thanks. --darkphase 13:49, 16 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

I presume you mean VandalProof, and not vandal bots, such as User:Tawkerbot2. VP seems to run perfectly fine under wine; thus, I have no intention of attempting a unix port. I am, however, currently porting VP2 out to Java, which will be GPLed, opensource, and runnable on any reasonable operating system with the Java jre1.5.0_07 or later installed. You may be more interested in working with that project or using source code from that project instead. If you would like source code for VP1.x, I'd be glad to get it to you; however, I would like to note that due to issues of legality (regarding MS components) and security, the project is not GPL, but rather is closed-source and copyright me. If you're given the source code, you must agree not to publish the code or to use any part of the application without first consulting me (not because I'm a control freak, but because there are various legal and security issues you may not be aware of). I'd much prefer that you build off of other opensource projects, such as VandalSniper or JVP2, than off of VandalProof 1.x. I'd also like to note that I'm working on a project named WikiMonitor, which will likely be GPLed (though, if it cannot be, it will in any case be opensource), and may be more helpful to you than the VP source. RFP for Featured Article of the Day

Sorry - I originally listed this on the RFP page but that's not the place for discussions - might I ask why FAotD are generally not at least semi-protected? The featured picture receives protection for the time it is on the front page. It just seems like a natural thing to do to allow editors to focus on building an encyclopdeia rather than protecting it in a case where a page has been made a higher priority target. Thanks for looking, though! DukeEGR93 13:56, 26 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

As an aside - I did read WP:NOPRO; I just think the rationale against semi-protection is awfully weak. DukeEGR93 13:59, 26 November 2006 (UTC)Reply
The featured picture, like the blurb about today's FA, is protected because it actually appears on the main page, which is a very high visibility page, and edits to this elements for shock value can be quite disruptive. Today's FA, and any page linked from the main page, however, is kept unprotected to encourage new editors to begin editing--while this results in much obnoxious vandalism and test editing, it also demonstrates the anyone-can-edit mentality, our great countervandalism team, and opens many eyes to the way Wikipedia works. It's primarily just an issue of visiting the main page which boasts "the encyclopedia anyone can edit!" and then immediately being led to a page with a nasty {{sprotected}} notice and a "view source" tab--doesn't reflect well on Wikipedia. Policy may soon change on this issue, but for now let's just grin and bear it. AmiDaniel (talk) 14:02, 26 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Wr template

I'd like to know what your thoughts are on reinstating this template in some way or creating new guidelines for stopping the removal of user warnings. A vandal looking to escape a block/ban is going to ultimately learn that they only need to keep deleting the level 1 or 2 warnings (under the guise of "cleaning up" or "incorrect warnings") and anyone (like myself) who is patrolling for vandalism is not going to know that the vandal had previously been warned unless the warnings begin to stack up faster than the vandal logs in. The result is perpetually cycling at level 1 or 2 and never reaching a point where the vandal is finally temp-blocked or potentially banned. In fact, I find this sort of insidious anti-anti-vandalism often stems from the worst vandals who attempt to disguise their vandalism as hoax/overlapping edits/etc and require the greatest amount of diverse attention that makes permanent user warnings useful to other anti-vandal patrollers. I saw that you userfied the Wr template and figured you'd be a person to discuss their eventual re-use depending on how they were implemented. Thanks. ju66l3r 19:46, 26 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

VP Approval Question

In the Awaiting Approval section, do you prefer users to add themselves at the top or bottom of the list? Tennis DyNamiTe (sign in) 22:13, 26 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Probably the bottom, but it truthfully makes no difference. Generally once a mod gets around to dealing with requests on that page, s/he clears it all in one breath; the order is generally irrelevant. Unfortunately, due to some bugs in the mod tools, this process is somewhat difficult for mods at the moment, thus the delay, but we're working on sorting it out. Thanks for your patience! Thanks you for unprotecting the page Robert Prechter. I do intend to put back some of the media citations, and I do hope that they are not simply reverted again. Re: Range blocks

Argh. Sorry I wasn't able to respond to your message sooner -- everything from holiday retail to final projects and exams at school are getting in the way, this week. There was a very serious trolling problem, including death and rape threats to users and their family members. Checkuser and IRC were involved; there was talk of police reports, as well. Before sprotecting a swath of pages, I thought I should try a short rangeblock; that didn't do the trick, so I thought I might try a longer one -- in retrospect, I should have advertised this decision more openly, should have done more to seek consensus as to the appropriate action, and should have made sure that I personally would be available to deal with the collateral damage I caused. For what it's worth, I'd like to think I learned a few lessons from this; it was at a different level than the problems I've dealt with, in the past, so hopefully I'll be prepared to respond more appropriately in the future. Let me know if there's anything more I can do, to help settle this. Luna Santin 01:15, 4 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Clerk for Requests for Checkuser

Hey AmiDaniel,

I am messaging you to ask whether you would be interested in reassuming your role as a Request for Checkuser clerk. Currently, the clerk duties are being shared among three experienced clerks, and we have added two new clerks, who are currently in the learning stage. We are currently experiencing backlogs and long waiting times for some actions to occur.

As you are currently listed under "inactive" on our clerk roster, we're asking that if you are willing to resume these clerk activities, please leave a message on my user talk page (quick link). A number of things have changed, so we reccommend re-reading Wikipedia:Requests for checkuser/Clerks/Guide. The guide is currently being rewritten, but the new and updated version should be available by 00:00 December 12, 2006 (UTC) at the latest.

If you aren't interested in being a checkuser clerk any longer, we accept your decision and thank you for your service; it would be greatly appreciated if you'd leave me a note that you're no longer interested. If you would like to resume your role in the future, but can't do so now, please mention so on my talk page, and I'll note this on our clerk register.

Thanks for your cooperation,

Need updated Version of Vandal Proof

Hey Ami, I was on the user list previously and have been traveling around the world. I am recently back in my home however I had to reinstall Vandal Proof on my system and now it is saying I am not on the list. You can check my page and see under discussion I was listed previously. Could you kindly direct me as the appropriate procedures to get the software again. I downloaded it from the site outside of Wiki however the verification says I am not on the list... Thanks--Gnosis 17:01, 3 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

VP

Sorry for adding my voice to what is doubtless becoming a strong chorus, but although I have been approved for Vandal Protection, I am told that I am not on the list. I don't think I'm the only one having this problem.schgooda 01:51, 4 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Also sorry for nagging about the same thing, but I'm in a similar position. I was approved some time (~6 months) ago, then had to take a Wikibreak, and now find with the new version that I'm apparantly not on the member list. Regards, Chrisd87 15:20, 4 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

VP

Hi, it seems as if though I am unable to log onto VP 1.3.1 as it says I am not on the user list. I tried restarting, redownloading, logging in and out, etc, but it is still not working. I was just recently approved. Mike6271 03:00, 9 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

What button on VandalProof would be the quickest way to revert any vandalism that I spot on wikipedia, without having to go through the "undo" selection on an edit page, or any of the other stuff. Thanks for the help :) Whammies Were Here (PYLrulz) 07:17, 9 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

WhodunitQuery

Following the invitation on the page for WhodunitQuery to improve it/clean it up, I took a copy and have revised the code significantly. This started because the program wouldn't work for me. However, I then simplified the code and took advantage of things like the new query api to make it even simpler. I have also added some extra comments. I have done virtually no checking at all (other than making sure it works for me) so I have just added an extra section to let users know an alternative version is available.

Please feel free to amend my addition as you feel fit. If you want to overwrite your version with mine then let me know so I can take my revised version off the net. --MarkS (talk) 11:07, 11 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Do you read User talk:AmiDaniel/VP/Abuse? I would appreciate it if you'd check into this. A user playing with your VandalProof tool caused me an immense amount of intentional frustration yesterday. If there is not going to be any oversight of how it is used, I'd rather see the tool deleted. Jeffpw 18:57, 16 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Eh, I know there is oversight. Jeff's pretty frustrated. I put up an adminbacklog tag there. My question would be, how long it is advisable to wait on that report before mirroring it at ANI? (I don't know if it's you who handles reports or other admins.) Sorry if we're being too impatient, but there was vandalism on the User talk:AmiDaniel/VP/Abuse page that hadn't been cleaned up for two days before I erased it, so I'm worried about the report going stale. — coelacan talk — 19:52, 16 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

VandalProof for german wikipedia

Moin Daniel, i saw you Userpage in the german wikipedia, stating that you are working on a Version for the german Wikipedia as well.

For the time being, v. 1.3. seems not working with de-domain. The ch-button does not work and the verifikation-button tells me that the User-List ist corrupt.

Im not approved at the moment. the question is, whether you can approve me on the english pages while I have a german account?

Maybe you could leave me a message here or by mail (should be already in you hand while typing this). Thanks a lot in advance. [[6]] Akkarin —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 89.50.94.72 (talk) 18:34, 25 January 2007 (UTC). Reply

Thanks for uploading Image:10kdays.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable under fair use (see our fair use policy).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. VP script errors

VP is a great tool when it's not acting up. Fortunately, I've only encountered one of the dreaded "Runtime error '91'" crashes, but twice every page I get irritating script errors. I downloaded the small program you offered on one of the FAQ/Bugs/etc. pages (don't remember where it was exactly), but it doesn't improve the experience very much. Do you have any idea how you can possibly override those? Perhaps Microsoft has a way... You're welcome to check my monobook.js for any scripts known to cause these errors; in fact, I'd appreciate it. Thanks for the great work on a wonderful tool, and I hope to see this JS bug cleared up; it'll make VP even better than it is now! — Tuvok[T@lk/Improve me] 01:54, 8 February 2007 (UTC) Reply

I apologize--there's lately been a shortage of list moderators and some technical troubles preventing the approval process from working as it was designed to. Also not helping has been my absence over the past two months, and while I currently have no where near the time for Wikipedia matters as I used to, I will be attempting to resolve these problems as soon as I possibly can. For now, I'm just going to have to ask you to be patient until I can make some repairs to the software and until one of our very few and very overworked moderators can get around to processing your request. Welcome back!

Glad to see you back around and in the swing of things! That page linked in the header gives a couple of handy templates that clerks can use to make messages more consistant.

Also, if you're still interested in clerking at RFCU as well as CHU, there's been a fair number of changes. Although it's very long and heavy 9sorry about that :D), WP:RFCU/C/G details what the current procedures are.

One further note, regarding your comment here, a new MediaWiki feature was recently introduced which prevents usernames being created that are too close to already-registered users. I believe that this would be prevented due to this feature. Although administrators aren't affected by this limitation, non-admins are, and Essjay has stated that he will fufill these requests (and any other user who may have only a handful of edits)

Cheers, and welcome back (I've updated Wikipedia:Requests for checkuser/Clerks/Table for you), Daniel.Bryant 04:54, 18 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

PS: Whilst I was writing this, I noticed [7] - on WP:CHU/C, there's a perfect template for this kind of situation :) Cheers, Daniel.Bryant 04:54, 18 February 2007 (UTC)Reply
Thanks! Sorry for my absence over the past several months--life has been quite hectic here. Though I likely won't be able to contribute nearly the time I used to, I am going to attempt to be as active as my time permits. I am definitely still interested in clerkng at RFCU--in fact, I was just about to hobble over there to see if anything needed doing--although, I do caution that I may not be capable of being completely active on either. As I said, I will do what my time permits. As for the MediaWiki change, sounds like a great implementation! Wish they'd gotten around to it sooner, and sorry I didn't know about it. It's amazing how quickly things change around here :). While I get back into the swing of things, please feel free to remove any incorrect comments I make and let me know where I'm mistaken. Thanks again for your warm welcome back :). AmiDaniel (talk) 05:01, 18 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Just /msg Daniel-Bryant if you do use IRC (which, according to everyone I've asked, you do) so I can set you +i. Cheers, Daniel.Bryant 05:05, 18 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Not a problem; 'tis honestly not even a distinction I was aware of until a couple weeks ago. It truly doesn't make all that much of a difference--the only problem is that few realize articles tagged with {{sprotect2}} are actually protected, which means they often don't get unprotected for far too long. Opening access to the source code

I would advise you be very very careful with the semi-open source format you are using now. As I am sure you are aware, in this format there is no way for the average user to tell exactly what they are running, and the volunteers may not check each others additions. Since this program has access to a large number of passwords, the possibility of an addition that would compromise a lot of accounts is very real. Are you going to check the full code changes made by these volunteers before you release any new versions? Also, the Approval list is pretty full, is there another mod who could do this? Beta and I have been solo for some time now, Wizardry and Froth really helped, but they are both gone now... Prodego talk 22:54, 19 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Yes, I'm going to be very cautious in this endeavor and I will check all submissions before letting them go live. No individual user will be permitted to let a version go live unless I give him/her that permission. You too are invited to help oversee this process--should you wish, I'll gladly give you access to the project site, and I'd also ask, if you have the time, to keep an eye on the VP page and make sure no one but I puts up any download links. I would, however, add that created a bogus app to thieve passwords that has the resemblance of VP, even without the source, would not be difficult to do. As such, I do not see this as creating any more real risk. Believe me as well that the volunteers I'm giving access are being very carefully reviewed--at present time, it's just Eagle, User:Ale_jrb, and myslef. AWB, for instance, will give cvs access to just about anyone. AmiDaniel (talk) 23:43, 19 February 2007 (UTC)Reply
AWB operates very successfully under the same idea Wikipedia operates under, that if you give access freely, the many who make positive contributions can easily outweigh those who make negative ones. It is more risky, but has the potential of great benifits, as AWB has become. With limited access, the code is safer, but the growth potential is reduced. The system you are using is a hybrid, with the a slightly higher potential of abuse if not monitored, with a good chance of growth. As long as it is monitored, it should be quite effective. I would be happy to oversee the project, as well as watch the pages here, something I already am doing. Prodego talk 00:01, 20 February 2007 (UTC)Reply
I think I do want access to the source, just to oversee changes. I would certainly not make any changes (well, maybe small things I can easily figure out), since the only thing I am anywhere close to an expert in is MediaWiki. I also fail criteria 3, since I detest IRC, and can't have anything to with VP2 because of that. :D So based on my complete lack of knowledge (I will be able to read the code, but not write it), if you are still willing to let me have access, please create an account with my wiki username, and whatever password you want. Then just email me the password. Thanks, Prodego talk 01:30, 24 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Please Help w/ Farm Sanctuary page

Hi, I just made several edits to the Farm Sanctuary page because many of the quotes were only part of a sentence or the actual source was not cited. It seems that 2 users, Schmucky the Cat and Ramdrake, are manipulating their edits unfairly and cleary are anti-animal rights advocates who have an agenda. I would like to request that both of them be blocked from that page. I haven't been on here very long, so please tell me what I need to do to request that. Thanks. Downloading VP 1.3.4

Thanks a lot for the new release and bug fixes!! The Welcome to VP1.3.3 page says that if you accidentally downloaded 1.3.3 to go back and snag 1.3.4 but on AmiDaniel.com I can only find 1.3.3 to download. Sorry if I am missing something but, am I looking in the right place for 1.3.4? Thanks again! KatalavenoTC 01:03, 24 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

That is the place to look. Either what is on the site is 1.3.4, but marked as 1.3.3, or the files haven't been uploaded yet. If the version marked VP 1.3.3 is working for you, use it until (and if) a version 1.3.4 is uploaded. Prodego talk 01:13, 24 February 2007 (UTC)Reply
Gah, I updated the link, but forgot that it puts modification requests to the Downloads page in a sort of "temporary queue," and I have to go through and approve changes before they become current. Should be 1.3.4 now--note, however, that I believe 1.3.5 may be coming up quite shortly (I managed to create a couple more bugs in the process of fixing other bugs, and I believe Alex has now fixed these). AmiDaniel (talk) 03:34, 24 February 2007 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for the response! Don't worry about 1.3.5... perfection sometimes takes a little time ;-) KatalavenoTC 03:58, 24 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

VP

Hi,

I'm having a problem with VandalProof since the time I was approved. Everytime I try to open it, it says that I'm not on the user list. Nevertheless, in my pc just left to me, it work correctly. I really don't know what to do...

I already tried to fix it with common problems (thank Prodego), like checking if the user the right one and so on.

I've also reinstalled my Operating System (Windows XP SP2) many, many times, only to try make VP works, but with no result, except with the last one, when I've managed to get it work right after the reinstallation, but one single reboot made VP not functional again.

It isn't a OS-related problem, I think, because even on Vista (with IE 7) is working nearly perfectly, I've tried it.

I've tried in an Ubuntu installation, under Wine, and it probably works, but since I've got Linux only in a Virtual Machine, it takes too much system resources (I haven't got a NASA pc ;-) ) and stuck after display the main window.

Currently, I've got no firewall at all, and in the previous installation I've managed to set correctly Zone Alarm.

I really don't know what to do :-(

Snowolf, you have way too much time on your hands. Most users just give up after it doesn't work. But I am sure your info will be of use, since you are the first to do anything like this.

Not completely compatible with the new warnings

I am currently using VandalProof 1.3.5. The start page claims that VandalProof is completely compatible with the new warnings, but when I click Rollback (custom), I find that the old warnings are still there. Squirepants101 21:25, 25 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

This isn't related to the above, but I'm just wondering why VP 1.3.1 allows me to login, while 1.3.5 says I am not on the user list. Thanks for any help. --RazorICEtalk 07:04, 26 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Please do not direct these questions to me, but rather to the relevant bugs and discussion pages. Recent changes were made to the autorization system by User:MichaelBillington. It's possible that there may be bugs in the new system or that your name was not correctly copied from the old system to the new system. As for the previous question, the claim that it was compatible with new warnings has nothing to do with Rb Custom, but rather with the warning recognition system. I believe the new warnings were also set as the default values for the Rb Buttons as well. These changes were implemented by User:Ale_jrb. In the future, please direct these queries to the SMF forums or the on-wiki forums, where developers will be more capable of assisting you. AmiDaniel (talk) 07:14, 26 February 2007 (UTC)Reply
Ah, alright, sorry about that. Thanks for the info. :) --RazorICEtalk 08:23, 26 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Wikipedia Weekly Notification!

This is just a friendly reminder that Wikipedia Weekly has been released with a new episode!

This is a special episode we recored specifically dealing w/ the whole Essjay/Ryan Jordan situation. We recorded this before Jimbo's second comment, so it might be a little dated but still a good listen.

I came up with an icon for WikiMonitor. It may need a few changes, but other than that, I think this icon should be suitable for the app.

Anaheim Hills, again

You said to contact you if Ericsaindon2 came back to Anaheim Hills... well he's back. His new account is Weather1019. This account has edited other articles, though this is hardly the first time he's had a sock express interest in other areas. Aside from a comment on the talk page, his first edit was (of course) to insert his interpretation of non-existent boundaries into the article again. It's not quite as clear cut as most of his other socks, so I came here (rather than WP:AIV) since you're familiar with the situation. AniMate 06:52, 6 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the notice. I checked his contribs, and it seems quite clear that he is Eric, especially with edits such as this one. Now blocked, and I'm going to go clean out his other creations. AmiDaniel (talk) 06:57, 6 March 2007 (UTC)Reply
The notable residents is certainly a telltale sign of Eric's, but the "boundaries" are his signature edit. Thanks for blocking, and have fun cleaning up Eric's other contributions. I suppose I should give him credit for being both consistent and persistent... but I'm just not feeling that generous. AniMate 07:05, 6 March 2007 (UTC)Reply
Yes, persistent he definitely is--he doesn't tire easy. But it's basically him against some 900+ admins and thousands of other contributors; I have to think he'll realize at some point that this nonsense is getting him nowhere. AmiDaniel (talk) 07:10, 6 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Wikipedia Community AfD

Hi, you may want to note that WP:ASR is a policy about writing style, not a policy about what kinds of articles we can have. There is nothing wrong with a well-sourced, well-written article that involves Wikipedia. Examples of such articles are Wikipedia and Jimbo Wales. In its current state the article is well-sourced and includes a notable award that the community received. Given this, I hope you may take the time to look at the AfD again. Thanks. Your (proposed?) edit to Marilyn Manson

Please see the section concerning his ties to the Church fo Satan on the discussion page. I apologize if I sound a bit harsh on this; it's been a very frustrating day. While I agree with you that his affiliation should not be in the introductory paragraph, you seem -- forgive me if I'm wrong -- to hold several misconceptions about Satanism (in the true sense of the word, not the democratically ascribed garbage on Wikipedia) as well as Manson's words. I won't repeat myself here, but if you would like sources -- including statements from several CoS officials -- then I can do that, but not presently, I'm a tad busy at the moment.
