Your recent edit of Western Australia I owe you an explanation...Edit

Hi. You may have noticed that I reverted your recent edit of that article. Your edit was very clearly a 'good faith' edit. For that reason, even though I mentioned a couple of points in my edit summary, I thought I owed you a more comprehensive explanation for my revert. Here goes:

  • I didn't feel that it was necessary to include the reference to the Russian sub-national entity in the lead-in, even though you were quite correct. The article is about Western Australia, and the lead-in is not the place for specifying detail about comparisons with other entities
  • Specifying the actual land area, down to the kilometer, appeared to 'clutter' the lead-in. The approximate land area is covered in the next paragraph, and the info box has the actual figures.
  • You referred to Perth as the capital. Good point. For convenience, I undid your whole edit, but it was clearly an improvement to the lead-in for you to mention that Perth was the capital city. I'll go back to the article tomorrow and re-insert that part of your edit.
  • The reference to Perth as 'one of the most isolated cities in the world' is a valid point, and possibly true, depending on how one defines isolation. However, it has been discussed numerous times in the past (once on the current talk page and in much of the archives). Whenever that claim finds its way back into the article, it gets removed - usually because the article is about Western Australia - the state - not the capital city. Even in the Perth article, the claim doesn't appear because it is a difficult claim to support. (difficulties in precisely defining "isolation" ie in relation to other cities? other capitals? ; also - Honolulu is about 4000km from Los Angeles, which is way further than is Perth from Adelaide for example). Obviously your statement was technically correct because of the use of "one of the most...", yet "one of the most" is, in most instances, an unencyclopedic phrase.
  • You wikilinked Perth in a subsequent paragraph. Probably not necessary as the link had already been done earlier in the article. (Actually - looking at that sentence which has been in the article for quite a while - I think Perth needs to be replaced with Mundaring anyway, as the pipeline doesn't start at Perth anyway.

Regards, GlenDillon 16:26, 23 January 2009 (UTC)

thanks for your reply, and I just noticed something else - you correctly removed the second wikilink of Perth - I mistakenly assumed you had linked it. I need to take more care! Apologies to you. I'll fix my error. My final bullet point above is thus struck out, and redirected to myself. As for your offer to improve geographical aspects of the article - just go ahead and edit or else leave a comment on the article's talk page first if you prefer. Whatever. cheers.GlenDillon 10:01, 24 January 2009 (UTC)

The WikiProject Novels Newsletter - March 2009Edit

The Novels WikiProject Newsletter
Issue 28 - November 2008
From the Coordinators

As you can see, this is about as bare-bones of a newsletter as you can get. The reason for this is that the newsletter has and will be inactive, but we wanted to get a last one out detailing the current state of our project. The truth is that WP:NOVELS is in bad shape. Only a few editors are active in editing inside of our project. Our Peer Review section, this newsletter, our task forces, and our collaboration center are all dead; although a collab is picked each month, not a lot of work seems to occur.

Out of these ashes, we are proposing that the project start an A-class review system. This will hopefully bring people together for reviewing, and will perhaps get the project some sorely-needed attention from others who can come in and help rehabilitate it. Final plans have not been established, but we will see about getting a mass message out to all of the project members if/when it is set up; discussion of this can be conducted on the General Forum.

This newsletter will probably be the last we will have for a long time, as neither Ed nor Kevinalewis have the time to create these every month. However, if any editor is willing to step up and create one, we would be glad to assist you in making it up.

If you don't want to create a newsletter, but would still like to help, there are plenty of things that can be done. As detailed on the right, the Novels Peer Review section has four articles needing attention, but only one review has been done; one from May, one from November, and one from December have not had any comments left on them. Please consider helping out there; even a 15-minute review would help.

Your coords,

Kevinalewis (talk · contribs) and the_ed17 (talk · contribs)

Member news
  • Talk between Kevinalewis and the_ed17, the two project coordinators, has led to us deciding to suspend elections for coordinators indefinitely. With the exceedingly low amount of participation in the last elections (five total votes), we do not feel that it is worth it to try to set up another election.
  • 20 positions remain unfilled at the Job Centre. Members who are active project contributors are encouraged to apply even if they can only do a position for a short time.

Outline of MalaysiaEdit

Hi,

I noticed you've been working on Malaysia-related topics.

Would you mind taking a look at Malaysia's branch of Wikipedia's Outline of knowledge?

If you feel like developing this outline and are not sure what to do, there's a set of instructions to get you started at user:The Transhumanist/Outline of knowledge#Country outline development.

And if you have any questions, feel free to drop me a note.

Request for helpEdit

I thought it might be a good idea to run a contest or two through the Countries WikiProject to attract editors to improve country coverage on Wikipedia, especially the country outlines.

I noticed you are a member of the WikiProject, and was wondering if you could help.

I've posted a message at Countries WikiProject talk page to get discussion started on what the awards programs should be and how they should be run.

Your ideas and feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Member in Focus
  • Hi, I have been a member of this project for a few months now, and after finally gotten to grips with Wikipedia I have decided to take on the role of writing this newsletter (currently by myself, but any help would be appreciated) with some helpful tips from The Ed17. After undertaking this I realise why it was so difficult to keep it going. I will, however, persevere. From the members, I would encourage you to vote in the Coordinator elections, and take up roles at the Job Centre. The project has struggled recently, and I am hoping to try and revive it. If, with the publication of this newsletter, there are a couple of things that aren't quite up-to-date (like the Collaboration part), you can be certain I am working on it. I will be trying to get a newsletter out on around the 21st of every month. Finally, thanks for the help Ed. Regards, Alan16 (talk) 23:41, 20 June 2009 (UTC)
Current debates
  • A Kenneth Oppel task force has been proposed. You can comment here. Oppel is a Canadian author who specialises in Young adult fiction.
Novel related news
  • American writer Michael Hemp wins the 2009 Next Generation Indie Book Award in the Action/Adventure category for his novel, The Nadjik Pheromone.
From the Outreach Department

This is my first attempt at the newsletter, and I hope it at least gets close to the previous high standards set by Kevinalewis and The Ed17. I will once again encourage you to vote in the Coordinator elections, as I hope it could be the springboard to revitalise the project. I'll keep working on the newsletter, partially because I like the stress, and partially because we need it to get members and would-be members interested. Hopefully the start of great things. Regards, Alan.

Collaboration of the Month
  • Because there has been little activity on our Collaboration page for a long time, I have made an executive decision, and chosen The Tin Drum as our Collaboration of the month.

  • Hello, I am a school librarian in my ‘real life’ and so I use Wikipedia a lot with students ageing from twelve to eighteen. While helping students research various topics I’ve run across many holes in Wikipedia that need to be filled so I created an account and began editing pieces. I’m taking a break from teaching for a few years while I raise two boys of my own, so I created a personal account a couple months ago and am focusing on editing articles on literature as well as the upper Midwest area of the United States and theatre. I enjoy all forms of literature but most often read fantasy and mystery. I am an occasional editor with no intent to run for any post; instead, I look at one or two articles a month that need help and do what I can. My public library system allows home access to a number of academic and professional databases, which is where I find most of my sources. Finally, I am currently working on filling in some of the red links on the Newbery Medal page and then hope to turn the stubs into full articles. Anyone want to help? I'd be interested in starting a Award Winners workgroup. I am also active in the WikiProject Biography and in the Children and Young Adult Literature WikiProject. They all have areas of focus that compliment each other and my interests.

  • Hi all, the Sword of Truth Task Force is restarting to clean up the articles related to Terry Goodkind's books and there adaptations. With the new TV series, The Legend of the Seeker, the books and the TV show are getting more critical attention, which means more real world material to document this great series of book. I would love to have other's help, as I have only just recently joined to find no other active members. The other members, as listed, have mostly left Wikipedia or removed themselves from the task force. If you are interested I would love to talk at the forum: Wikipedia:WikiProject Sword of Truth/General Forum, or send me a message. Hope to talk to some of you soon, SADADS (talk).

  • Hello all. As you're probably aware this is the first newsletter since August. I had hoped that although I was unable to write one for the ensuing months, somebody would have picked it up, but that was sadly not to be. However I am back, and that should hopefully mean a new newsletter every month, like it used to be. There has been a lot of work done on novel related articles in my absence, however the project does not appeared to have progressed very much, which I'm sure you would all agree, is a shame as it holds such promise for Wikipedia. But with the new year approaching I am hoping that things will turn around, so I urge you all to get involved with the project in whatever way you can, and help it achieve its full potential. All that's left for me now is to wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Hello. Your account has been granted the "reviewer" userright, allowing you to review other users' edits on certain flagged pages. Pending changes, also known as flagged protection, is currently undergoing a two-month trial scheduled to end 15 August 2010.

Reviewers can review edits made by users who are not autoconfirmed to articles placed under pending changes. Pending changes is applied to only a small number of articles, similarly to how semi-protection is applied but in a more controlled way for the trial. The list of articles with pending changes awaiting review is located at Special:OldReviewedPages.

When reviewing, edits should be accepted if they are not obvious vandalism or BLP violations, and not clearly problematic in light of the reason given for protection (see Wikipedia:Reviewing process). More detailed documentation and guidelines can be found here.

Meet-up: Editors from MalaysiaEdit

Hello! You might or might not have seen me around here as I've not been active in Wikipedia the past few months. Before leaving for NS, it was my intention to form a Malaysian user group. I'm still very much interested in forming the group. However, before forming the group, I would love to organize a meet-up between editors of the Malaysian editing community to test the waters and hear what you guys might have to say. To my knowledge, there has not been a Wikipedia meet-up in this country before. I don't mind organizing the meet-up but need to know if anyone is interested in joining the meet-up. So... please reply and let me know if you would be interested in joining a meet-up and your ideas/thoughts about a user group. Thank you.

Looking forward to hearing from you, Bejinhantalks 12:25, 15 December 2012 (UTC) (Message delivered by EdwardsBot (talk) 12:25, 15 December 2012 (UTC))

Speedy deletion nomination of The Gardens (Kuala Lumpur)Edit

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on The Gardens (Kuala Lumpur), requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G11 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page seems to be unambiguous advertising which only promotes a company, product, group, service or person and would need to be fundamentally rewritten in order to become encyclopedic. Please read the guidelines on spam and Wikipedia:FAQ/Organizations for more information.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, you can place a request here. Epeefleche (talk) 13:29, 1 April 2014 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of ProwessEdit

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia. This is a notice to inform you that a tag has been placed on Prowess requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A3 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is an article with no content whatsoever, or whose contents consist only of external links, a "See also" section, book references, category tags, template tags, interwiki links, images, a rephrasing of the title, a question that should have been asked at the help or reference desks, or an attempt to contact the subject of the article. ArbCom elections are now open!Edit

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Proposed deletion of Primary School Evaluation Test (Malaysia)Edit

The article Primary School Evaluation Test (Malaysia) has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Only known for one event; fails WP:GNG

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Jalen D. Orphaned non-free image File:Kosmo.gifEdit

Thanks for uploading File:Kosmo.gif. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described in section F5 of the criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. --B-bot (talk) 18:51, 7 December 2019 (UTC)
