S/Y Lulworth edit

I have added a "{{prod}}" template to the article S/Y Lulworth, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but I don't believe it satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and I've explained why in the deletion notice (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). Please either work to improve the article if the topic is worthy of inclusion in Wikipedia, or, if you disagree with the notice, discuss the issues at its talk page. Removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, but the article may still be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached, or if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria. Reliance (yacht) edit

Hi there, I am working on unredlinking the America's Cup races during the period 1880-1930, and right now am working on 1903, the year of Reliances defence. I have turned up a few sources about the race (I have a few offline also) so I am looking to expand the article on Reliance, but it involves bits of wikisyntax which I have to learn piece by piece - it is going slowly. Right now it looks like I messed the article up, but it isn't so bad... I will finish the infobox and then tidy the article later today. This is just a preparatory message in case you look at it and think it needs reverting - it will look better in a few hours! And thanks for tidying it up already, I will try and copy the syntax you used to get the refs to all show up the same way. Weakopedia (talk) 09:06, 11 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

Hi,

Thanks for cleaning up my pourly writen article. This is a major improvement! I wrote it anyway since the origional sub did not do her right. However I like to change some minor things back. THe ISAF currently uses the names of metre classes as 8 Metre, 6 Metre and so on. I also use this in my upgrades of the series of the Sailing at the .... Summer Olympics. The otherthing is the names of the coupes and other prizes since these are the origional prizes of the real thing:-). If you do not mind i will return these edits tomorrow. Otherwize we will discuss this here. Thanks again for you tremendious edit this evening. Regards, NED33 (talk) 20:42, 13 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

Boat articles flagged into categories 'year' in sports edit

I always assumed that the 'year in sports' categories related primarily to events. eg if a boat was successfully active in winning races/regattas for 10 years should that boat's article be categorised 10 times in ten different 'year in sports' categories? In the case of the America's Cup then I think that the event should be categorised in the appropriate year but all the articles re associated boats, syndicates, yacht clubs, sailors etc should not as most are accessible from the main article. I flag this to you with my interpretation of the use of the 'year in sport' category and in the interest of keeping categories focussed, unambiguous and easy to view/navigate. Would appreciate your thoughts on this. Thanks, Boatman (talk) 10:22, 2 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

Your point of view is correct, of course. Bearing in mind that no specific articles have been written prior to the 1920 races, this is a good way to read about the racing events. Britannia raced for 43 years, but is flagged as Category:1893 in sports for good reason, I think. Nuttyrave (talk) 10:45, 2 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

Notification: changes to "Mark my edits as minor by default" preference edit

Hello there. This is an automated message to tell you about the gradual phasing out of the preference entitled "Mark all edits minor by default", which you currently have (or very recently had) enabled.

On 13 March 2011, this preference was hidden from the user preferences screen as part of efforts to prevent its accidental misuse (consensus discussion). This had the effect of locking users in to their existing preference, which, in your case, was true. To complete the process, your preference will automatically be changed to false in the next few days. This does not require any intervention on your part and you will still be able to manually mark your edits as being minor in the usual way.

For established users such as yourself there is a workaround available involving custom JavaScript. With the script in place, you can continue with this functionality indefinitely (its use is governed by WP:MINOR). If you have any problems, feel free to drop me a note.

Thank you for your understanding and happy editing :) Editing on behalf of User:Jarry1250, LivingBot (talk) 19:13, 15 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

You are correct. The image should stay. It's just a pity a large american flag is there. Still, I imagine better to have an image with a blemish than not to have one at all. B. Fairbairn (talk) 13:51, 25 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

I think that we all have to thank that American lady for the boat's survival, so I donot see a simple flag (now replaced by a Cayman Islands ensign I believe) as blemish. Actually I have yet to see a flaw in that yacht. signed:Nuttyrave (talk) 14:20, 25 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

Naval History edit

Aye there, 'Donan.raven', I'm a member of WikiProject Ships. To help naval historians here at Wikipedia in the effort of writing and citing naval history articles sometime ago I created the List of ships captured in the 19th century and Bibliography of early American naval history pages. Over the last year(+) I have been tracking down and including names of captured ships and naval history texts for inclusion in either of these articles. I like to think that I have included most captured ships (19th century) and most naval history texts (1700s-1800s) for inclusion in these articles, so if you know of any captured ships or naval history texts that are not included would you kindly include them, either on the page or the talk page of the appropriate article? Any help would be a big help and feedback is always welcomed. Thanx! -- Gwillhickers (talk) 17:20, 1 April 2013 (UTC)Reply

I am afraid that my understanding of military ships is too poor to contribute to these already strong articles, and I cannot recommend anybody either at this point.

Cordialement,
--MetaTridi (talk) 13:57, 1 September 2014 (UTC)Reply

Cordialement,
MetaTridi (talk) 17:52, 2 September 2014 (UTC)Reply

I am not a specialist in this field but I understand this much:
Eligibility to host on Wikimedia requires authored work to be free of copyright or be published under copyleft license in both the country of origin and in the US. In the UK, copyright can be claimed on any authored work (this postcard) until 70 years after the author's death; Frank William Beken always claimed copyright on his work and his dates are 1880–1970. signed:Donan Raven (talk) 09:16, 25 July 2015 (UTC)Reply
Accepted in good faith, but surely it is up to Beken's estate to claim the copyright and those who are legally charged to represent the author's estate may have seen the image here, but decided not to object?80.229.34.113 (talk) 09:36, 27 July 2015 (UTC)Reply
No, it is always up to the uploader and to the maintainers to make sure that all files and contributions are licensed properly, do not include copyrighted work or plagiarism, and are sourced properly. No publisher would accept to put an uncredited but copyrighted photograph in a book without advising the author and hope that a permission were granted - and Wikimedia is a publisher. signed:Donan Raven (talk) 07:12, 28 July 2015 (UTC)Reply
Do you have the contact details for Beken's estate so we can request permission? The page would benefit from the photograph's inclusion.80.229.34.113 (talk) 10:29, 28 July 2015 (UTC)Reply

List of large sailing sloops edit

Hello Donan. First of all thanks for yours contribution to my page, I realy appreciate it! I found some data not responding to my database and so before doing any "undo" I would like to understand which is your source. I report some examples:
Mirabella V name is M5, why do you change it?

@Torralta83: it was Mr. Vittoria's fifth Mirabella, and you will also get all #1, #2, and #3 if you do the list to 40.00m, so it is there for historical purposes rather than to present current ship's current particulars (indicated in the Mirabella V article). The vessel's current registered identification as defined in the parametres is indeed M5 (after all silverware, towels and uniforms often use acronyms and are part of a sale handover, and there is a huge marquettery M5 logo on the saloon floor that has been there since she left Vosper Thornycroft), so I donot think that Mirabella V is offputting. Since you are the creator/manager for the page, feel free to change it back.

Perseus 3 lenght according to all specification is 60m

The "Perini 60m semi-custom series" is used to describe the fleet and sure enough Perini used 60m on their website for both Seahawk and P3, who are sisterships from a hull point of view, but the press (Yachting World Boat International) and the shipyard brochure for Seahawk (P3's brochure does not have a single line of text) use 58.60m. The problem is the article uses sparred length and P3 actually measures a lot more than 58.60m (or 60.00m for that matter) because of her bowsprit and I don't have a measure for that. So this value is inaccurate.

Kokomo displacement is 100 tons less

read from the shipyard brochure
I just read the designer specheet which reads 450t lightship displacement, and I obviously took the 598t SWL displacement value from the shipyard.
Question: should designer (definitely accurate) or shipyard (more final, but not necessarily more accurate as Kokomo was slipped, so a crane operator at Alloy Yachts never recorded the actual load) data be preferred? Or should lightship or fullload displacement be preferred from a more general standpoint? Or should we just use the type of displacement for which we can fill more cells in the boatlist? signed:Donan Raven (talk) 21:41, 8 November 2015 (UTC)Reply

Ganesha air draught is 7m less

read from page 15 in the shipyard brochure

Please let me know! In the next weeks I would like to extend the list to 40m boats. Thanks!--The Weatherman (talk) 18:21, 8 November 2015 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for putting this list together, it is very challenging work, but not as accurate as I would like it (Either DSP lightship or full load is used where available for example, and). I have been maintaining the [list of large sailing yachts] and just getting all the boats is already challenging enough signed:Donan Raven (talk) 20:19, 8 November 2015 (UTC)Reply

Bunch of ACF (American Car & Foundry) stuff wound up there, as did lot of his patrol boats. I believe, for instance, what the RN saw as the Banff-class sloops were his. Maxi yacht edit

Hi Donan! Happy 2016! I would like to thank you about maxi yacht page update... I had in plan to do the list section on my own. You overtake me!
Anyway I have some points I would like to share with you:
1- do you think make sense to modify/update list title with "list of modern maxi yacht" (as in section title)?
2- it is ok for you if I add some columns? I was mainly thinking to: displacement, air draught and sail area
3- can you explain your selection criteria? I'm not completely convinced about some boats (i.e. Nomad IV, Wally cento class). In my opinion we have to consider only racers otherwise the list should be expanded to too many others units ( Hamilton, Chrisco, former y3k, southern wind 100, Swan 100... Etc). On the opposite considering point 1, new rambler 88 is for sure a better candidate. What do you think?
4- last point is just a curiosity. I read in a forum about a new maxi vplp in build at green marine. Have you any info about it? Is just web garbage or not?
Thanks! --The Weatherman (talk) 14:33, 4 January 2016 (UTC)Reply

@Torralta8: Happy new year! You are welcome to add new columns (I know that the table doesn't fit on a cellphone, but i would try to make each cell as a narrow as possible, where possible, otherwise better to just complete the notes column I think).
So I started with the IRC listing here (it is *always* up to date with the latest TCC rating as well as the LH/draught/beam as well as the interesting Displacement/Length Ratio that you can use if you want to compute+add a displacement column). Afterwards I added Nomad, Galateia and Magic Carpet because they are also in the IRC list and actively raced and measure the same as the others around 98-100ft, but they are not really all-out racing yachts are they? But then again Leopard isn't either because she has a luxury interior too...I don't have particular criteria, but Leopard still holds fantastic monohull records ('Round Isle of Wight Race, New-York to Lizard Point, Cowes-Dinard,Circumnavigation of Ireland), so why exclude the other luxury racers? Maybe this has to with the races themselves, but these are not even mentioned in the articles, yet. Of course you can add the 90ft maxis but they are rather more numerous, and Rambler is an amazing one on handicap and overall. No I haven't heard of a new VPLP maxi built at Green Marine, have you heard of the whereabouts of Stealth these days, I was aboard years ago and she was shockingly good looking! signed:Donan Raven (talk, contribs) 15:53, 4 January 2016 (UTC)Reply
sorry no idea... I've seen her sailing 4-5 years ago in La Spezia gulf. Wonderful boat! I think she is actually docked in some Ligurian harbour. Maybe in summertime is easier to find her in Sardinia... Ais in that period can help. --The Weatherman (talk) 19:17, 4 January 2016 (UTC)Reply
UPDATE: the IRC/TCC listing has been updated since the Sydney-Hobart, or New Year's, and Comanche, Rambler, and a number of other maxi certificates have been removed, maybe RORC/UNCL cleans them up during this period, therego the link is pretty useless for you right now. I have a backup from one week ago that you can use (I removed some columns and sorted it by descending TCC).
Interesting, thanks! According to the new list approach you cannot forgot Visione, Saudade, p2, hetairos, Inoui... And many others! It will become a long list! --The Weatherman (talk) 19:17, 4 January 2016 (UTC)Reply
You are right, it would be wrong to include those especially because they race amongst themselves and not on an openly competitive offshore IRC circuit, I think that should be the criterium that we are looking for: transpac, bermuda, fastnet and sydney-hobart.
  • What about record attempts? I included Mari Cha IV because she still holds the monohull transat record, so I included her for historical purpose (she is now retired from racing)
For sure she was born as a true racer! I see her at a Palermo-Montecarlo start... No chance to win for anybody else! About eligibility we have to say that Rorc opens to yacht larger than 100 feet only in 2015 and at Sydney to Hobart 100 feet is still the "maxi" limit .--The Weatherman (talk) 23:33, 4 January 2016 (UTC)Reply
Yes it is my understanding that line honour Maxis will stick to the Sydney Hobart limit - that is how I tried to explain it in the text above the table at least.signed:Donan Raven (talk, contribs) 00:09, 5 January 2016 (UTC)Reply
  • What about failed boats like the 100ft 1999 Ron Holland? I included her because she already had a nice photograph and because she was built precisely for all-out offshore racing
I have to admit that to me sounds new. Anyway I think she respects all the eligibility requirements!.. --The Weatherman (talk) 23:33, 4 January 2016 (UTC)Reply
  • I am not sure how to draw the criteria precisely, I think perhaps that they should all, at some point, have been measured by IRC, IMS or IOR for the purpose of taking part in an offshore race, but this ay be quite difficult to track. So out go KZ1, Y3K, WallyCentoes.
  • we probably also need a list of List of *racing* mutihulls ?! signed:Donan Raven (talk, contribs) 20:57, 4 January 2016 (UTC)Reply
I'm really not a racing multihull expert! But for sure I can give you my support! --The Weatherman (talk) 23:33, 4 January 2016 (UTC)Reply
UPDATE: I am note sure yet if Nomad is a good boat, she certainly had "growing pains" at the beginning, but she is not a failure, having done a good RYS/NYYC North transatlantic this summer and just won overall prize in the RORC Caribbean transat in December amid easy competition; She is chartered with an interior, so she is of same designation as Leopard, and the eligibility in this list should be treated equally for both boats in my view.signed:Donan Raven (talk, contribs) 21:08, 4 January 2016 (UTC)Reply
In 2007, at the beginning, Leopard had very poor interior similar to Alfa II and WOXI. Luxurious stuff has been added in a second time during 2012 refit. Maybe this is the big difference with Nomad IV. --The Weatherman (talk) 23:33, 4 January 2016 (UTC)Reply
How interesting, I just read that Leopard had a removable interior, very little of it was in for her first two seasons, must have been quite bare indeed!
I added a few boats to the article (is it complete?), all the way down to 88ft to include the new Rambler, not sure we want to go down further (the two(?) R/P maxZ86s or the 85ft Whitbread ketchs ?); It may depend on the columns that you will add. signed:Donan Raven (talk, contribs) 00:09, 5 January 2016 (UTC)Reply

Sea Cloud edit

Shouldn't sailing yachts meet the same criteria as the yachts in the list of motor yachts by length? And particularly this one:

  • Only includes boats that are actual "luxury yachts", not boats doubling as yachts, such as naval ships, cruise ships, merchant ships, etc.

I mean Sea Cloud may some day have been a yacht, but if it's current status isn't that of yacht, it should not be included, am i right? But thats just me. Tell me what you think. 102Legobrick (talk) 14:44, 12 April 2016 (UTC)Reply

Sea Cloud is classed as a yacht and is available for charters like other yachts, it is just a distinction that cruises have been organised onboard because she is so largely accommodated, but I totally agree that the definitions of both sailing and motor yachts should match if possible. Private ownership is complicated to establish because all these vessels are owned by island-registered companies rather than in person by a private individual so the notes for Sea Cloud are inadequate and need to be changed; Let's wait for the final outcome on the motor yachts talk page. There is a bigger issue there: *none* of the ownership columns are sourced, certainly not by SYT which is used systematically as a source. Despite having brought it up in the debate this has not been addressed and represents far more serious WP:OR and WP:BLP concerns. Thanks for contributing. signed:Donan Raven (talk, contribs) 15:19, 12 April 2016 (UTC)Reply
Are you associated with a Dutch yachtbuilder? signed:Donan Raven (talk, contribs) 15:40, 12 April 2016 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for explaining. And no, i am not associated with a Dutch yachtbuilder. I am maritime engineering student with the intention to go to work later on in the yacht building industry. 102Legobrick (talk) 08:25, 13 April 2016 (UTC)Reply

Naema & Gloria edit

Dear Donan

With regard to the page on Large Schooners.

Please note that Gloria is not a Mylne yacht - she was not designed by the Mylne office, though superficially she sports the rig from Panda.

Naema is NOT a mylne yacht either, as there are significant variations from the original Mylne plans

In any event, both yachts were not built with the input of the Mylne office, and we (I am the Mylne office), do not recognise them as Mylne yachts. They may be inspired by Mylne, but they are not entitled to consider themselves as Mylne yachts.

Furthermore, Mylne is a registered trade mark.

Please contact me directly if you wish to discuss.

Best regards

Disambiguation link notification for June 7 edit

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited List of sailboat designers and manufacturers, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Edward Burgess (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)
