You are invited to join the Wikimedia NYC community for our monthly "WikiWednesday" evening salon (7-8pm) and knowledge-sharing workshop. This month, as part of Wikimedia NYC's commitment to the well-being of members, we will hold WikiWednesday online via Zoom videoconferencing! To join the meeting from your computer or smartphone, just visit this link. More information about how to connect is available on the meetup page.

A mapframe switcher experiment

I think you'll be interested in this: User talk:Evad37/Template:Mapframe multi. Still needs work re formatting, and maybe allowing multiple parameters to be switched at the same time. - Evad37 [talk] 08:56, 17 June 2020 (UTC)

Wonderful, thank you! A clear benefit to replacing pushpin maps in settlement articles' infoboxes. ɱ (talk) 16:40, 17 June 2020 (UTC)

Infobox mapframe draft RFC

Hey, can I get your thoughts on User:Evad37/Infobox mapframe draft RFC? Getting consensus, especially on availability (Q1) and display (Q2), should make it a whole lot easier and quicker to deploy mapframe maps to more infoboxes. - Evad37 [talk] 14:46, 21 June 2020 (UTC)

@Evad37: Thanks for bringing this to my attention, and creating it. I'll look it over more in-depth later today. ɱ (talk) 17:57, 21 June 2020 (UTC)
I think these are important questions to ask. Are you hoping this will allow for more widespread implementation of mapframe among all those infobox templates lacking it? That would be really good. Could you perhaps try to include a description of the templates that do already use mapframe, inline in the RFC? Would help to show some precedent and examples. As well, some more complex usage can be described, like at George Floyd protests (the global map also being used for state/country articles), High Line (map collapsed in infobox), Scioto Mile Promenade (also used for other Scioto Mile parks), Central Park (used to show all major park features), (there are probably more)... ɱ (talk) 23:09, 21 June 2020 (UTC)
The community has voiced many concerns about the maps. Very bad boundaries shown for complex borders ( Maritime demarcations especially bad). File not being able to be edited by this community. Interaction that leads new viewers to belive it's just a street map. Lots of bias and NPOV concerns when it comes to prominent landmarks.--Moxy 🍁 23:40, 21 June 2020 (UTC)
Why are you stating this here? I disagree with your view, but this isn't the place to argue about it. If you'd like to participate in the RFC once open, by all means, do so. ɱ (talk) 23:47, 21 June 2020 (UTC)
Not sure why but I got pinged to this talk. Sorry if out of place...but just FYI ...maps were removed from most country and many state level articles for the above stated reasons after a village pump talk.--Moxy 🍁 23:53, 21 June 2020 (UTC)
Thanks for the ideas ɱ. Yes, I am hoping for more widespread implementation, and more consistency infoboxes if possible. Thanks for the suggestions, I'll work more on the draft rfc later today or tomorrow - Evad37 [talk] 02:05, 22 June 2020 (UTC)

@Moxy: Let me also offer a point-by-point rebuttal. Unfortunately one of Wikipedia's downfalls is its membership is primarily an older generation, often averse to technological advances. Maplink is a strong advantage to Wikipedia, bringing it into the 21st century alongside most websites. I’ll explain below:

  1. These types of maps are used univerally in search engines (Google, Bing, etc.) as well as on most modern websites. It’s much, much easier and quicker to set a coordinate location to an existing scalable map than it is to create an svg/png map from scratch for every entity you want to map out. This allows a basic-level editor to add maps to articles, where before they absolutely couldn’t.
  2. The only way we as editors have access to a global mapping service that is open-source is through OpenStreetMap. Sure it’s not part of Wikimedia, but it would be impossible to create something this comprehensive and as good as it is without extensive work… to land in the same place. OSM is easy to edit, far easier than creating maps from scratch, and is compatible with our licenses. If you have a problem with boundaries, feel free to fix them.
  3. The “problem” of users thinking it’s just a street map is not a problem. Google and Bing display maps like this - search for any building on Google search or Google Maps, and people get used to the idea that you can zoom in or out. It’s also why I add the capion “Interactive map of…” to each maplink map I create. Anyone who thinks an interactive map couldn’t zoom is not accustomed to the modern internet. Also, Evad37 just added the stacking functionality offered by pushpin maps, so people can easily click to view a street-level, city-level, state-level, or country-level view. Gives no excuse to imagine people misled to think a maplink map only shows a street-level view.
  4. Nobody’s proposing we abandon all svg/png/pushpin maps. They will have their uses. I, for instance, created detailed interior maps at Grand Central Terminal, which will likely never be in OpenStreetMap (even though Google Maps does offer similar detail.)
  5. Consensus can change. It especially might given recent updates to maplink, for instance, the recent stacking ability added. It also might as OpenStreetMap improves, but it is an incredibly competent mapping tool. It has features in communities in Africa that even Google Maps lacks. With editors able to make near-instant changes, I have been able to correct problems with Columbus, Ohio quickly on OSM, and have proposed the same changes on Google Maps, but have had to jump through hoops to find out where, how, and who can make these changes. I have done my due diligence in reporting the errors and presenting them to city officials, but who knows if they will ever be changed.
  6. What are these bias and NPOV concerns?

Best, ɱ (talk) 18:46, 22 June 2020 (UTC)

Columbus photo

Instead of labouriously analysing the house's appearance, you should check the map appearing near the end of the nomination...if you go to page 31 and then bring up the Hibbs Street area on USGS quads, you'll see that your analysis was entirely correct. The dot in the nomination map is located at 39°50′23.5″N 83°1′6.5″W / 39.839861°N 83.018472°W / 39.839861; -83.018472. Good work, and thank you! I'll get things cleaned up. Autopatrolled granted

Hi Ɱ, I just wanted to let you know that I have added the "autopatrolled" permission to your account, as you have created numerous, valid articles. This feature will have no effect on your editing, and is simply intended to reduce the workload on new page patrollers. For more information on the autopatrolled right, see Wikipedia:Autopatrolled. However, you should consider adding relevant wikiproject talk-page templates, stub-tags and categories to new articles that you create if you aren't already in the habit of doing so, since your articles will no longer be systematically checked by other editors (User:Evad37/rater and User:SD0001/StubSorter.js are useful scripts which can help). Feel free to leave me a message if you have any questions. Happy editing! Chetsford (talk) 19:12, 3 July 2020 (UTC)

Westchester County

Hello Ɱ,

Thank you for your suggestions.

  1. Gossip girl was a very popular TV show and the character in question Georgina Sparks was one of the main characters. There are numerous scenes in the show with Georgina at her home in Bedford. Georgina moving and living in Bedford during the show was a significant setting in the show. The scenes actually weren't filmed in Bedford but were filmed at Greystone Court in Yonkers. Considering some of the other mentions of Westchester in television that were less significant and were not filmed in Westchester I felt this was an appropriate addition. I can add the filming location of Greystone Court because that seems like a significant detail to be included. I also do have a source for that.[1] I think it would be appropriate for me to restore my edit for the popular culture section and add the additional filming location that is relevant to Westchester.
  2. I agree with your edit however i do think its necessary to have the official title of the bridge included in the caption as well (Mario M. Cuomo Bridge). The bridges official name is the Mario M. Cuomo Bridge and that is how it appears on road signs and maps. However it is commonly refered to as the new Tappan zee bridge since that is the bridge that it replaced. I can add some more information about the Tappan zee under the bridges section because I do feel that the bridge is very significant to Westchester.
  3. I was unaware that that picture was also at the top. However, to a reader who has little knowledge about Westchester would know that that picture is white plaines. That picture has been in this article for years and in my edit I moved it due to formatting issues.
  4. Thank you for your suggestion I will make a natural setting section under Geography. I think that is a great idea. There are many nature parks and reserves in the county that are not mentioned at all in this article. There is so much unique habitats and ecosystems in Westchester and their inclusion in this article would be beneficial. The Mianus river gorge is very significant to Westchester. It contains an old growth forrest that is one of only a select few in the east coat of the USA. The federal government designated the Mianus River Gorge as the nation’s first registered Natural History Landmark because of its old-growth hemlock hardwood forest and rushing river. I suggest reading up about the preserve as it is very interesting and worthy of an inclusion on the article. I do agree that the addition of this preserve in a natural setting section would be appropriate. As for the picture i included my own because I felt there weren't great pictures available on wikipedia and most of the ones that are are of the Mianus river Reservoir which is not apart of the preserve itself and the majority of the reservoir is in Fairfield county Connecticut. The preserve is popular visit by many residents in northern westchester. I myself live in norther Westchester and can assure you this is commonly visited due to its pristine and unique landscape.[2]

I will not make my edits yet as I would like your input— Preceding unsigned comment added by Koala234 (talkcontribs) 18:22, 4 July 2020 (UTC)

@Koala234: Hi, sorry for getting back to you so late. You have some good ideas here, let me take a look... ɱ (talk) 15:52, 6 July 2020 (UTC)
@Koala234: - okay, for number 1 - the reference you give now is a Westchester tourism website, not exactly a reliable source. Can you please find a more reputable source that describes the Yonkers and/or Bedford connection? For number 2 - the article Hudson River was actually just corrected as the common name is "Tappan Zee Bridge" or "new Tappan Zee Bridge". We should follow what the article is titled and what New Yorkers actually call it. For number 3 - the caption in the infobox describes it as "downtown White Plains", not sure how that can be any clearer. As for number 4 - please go ahead and add about nature preserves. Feel free to add the picture of the gorge there, though I will try to use {{multiple image}} to also add a photo of another more-well-known preserve, alongside it. Thanks and best, ɱ (talk) 21:40, 6 July 2020 (UTC)

Re: Rocky

That was actually my first impression too, however a look in the deletion log shows this version and the previous version were sadly too similar to justify a new afd. If you want to rewrite it be my guest, however to avoid the csd G4 criteria it needs to be different enough that the admin corps can be reasonably expected to lean towards afd as opposed to csd. TomStar81 (Talk) 02:44, 4 August 2020 (UTC)

Was there an AfD prior? I can likely make the article a thousand times better; move it to a draft space so I at least have something to go on. I write some food-related articles, and that's an area Wikipedia is terrible in, so I'm not keen to see many in this area deleted. I think it's clear this person has significant press coverage, it just needs to be written neutrally and with more of those reliable sources. ɱ (talk) 02:52, 4 August 2020 (UTC)

Marijke Kill/Crum Elbow Creek

Hey, Square. Sorry it was fencing over a minor passage of the Maritje Kill article that brought us together (again), and revealed you are that page's principal author. I had been wondering who had been behind it, as it is a fine and detailed account of that minor waterway, which I ran into trying to determine if there was enough existing copy regarding nearby Crum Elbow Creek to start creating a Wikipedia article about it using what was already available on the encyclopedia as a core.

Now and then I work some on the (ostensible) fourteen royal land patents that comprised historic Dutchess County (which included Putnam County till 1812). Just a few days ago I wrote an article on the Fauconnier Patent, which has the Crum Elbow Creek as its southern border. The article's a start, and can use improvement and enhancement, some of which I may yet get to so long as I have a bunch of relevant external links on the subject open - or not. Likewise, I may or may not get to one on Crum Elbow Creek now or any time soon. But did not want to miss the opportunity to both thank you for and acknowledge the fine work you did on Maritje Kill. ArbCom 2020 Elections voter message

Hello! Voting in the 2020 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 7 December 2020. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2020 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 02:25, 24 November 2020 (UTC)

December 16, 7pm: ONLINE WikiWednesday Salon NYC

You are invited to join the Wikimedia NYC community for our monthly "WikiWednesday" evening salon (7-8pm) and knowledge-sharing workshop. To join the meeting from your computer or smartphone, just visit this link. More information about how to connect is available on the meetup page.

We look forward to seeing local Wikimedians, but would also like to invite folks from the greater New York metropolitan area (and beyond!) who might not typically be able to join us in person!

This month will include a discussion of the sixth annual Community Wishlist Survey, an opportunity for editors and other community members to submit proposals for fixes and features you'd like the Wikimedia Foundation's tech team to address. As always, it's the agenda anyone can edit, so please feel free to add any projects you'd like to share.

7:00pm - 8:00 pm online via Zoom (optional breakout rooms from 8:00-8:30)

(You can subscribe/unsubscribe from future notifications for NYC-area events by adding or removing your name from this list.)
