Singapore Airlines fleet edit

Singapore Airlines Boeing 777-300ER

Singapore Airlines operates one of the youngest fleets in the world. Its streamlined fleet currently features aircraft from just 3 aircraft families, including the Boeing 747, the Boeing 777, and the Airbus A340.

Through 2006, the 747-400 was the flagship of the Singapore Airlines fleet. It was the only model fitted with Singapore Airline's premium First Class SkySuites. However, the new 777-300ER is configured to a higher standard in all classes of service. Most of the 747-400s have already been retired and the remainder are due to be retired by 2011. They are being replaced by a mixture of 777-300ERs and A380-800s. 10 777-300ERs have already joined the fleet and Singapore Airlines has 9 more 777-300ERs on firm order, with deliveries to be completed by mid-2008.

It is the launch customer for the Airbus A380-800, and is the first airline to operate it. It has 19 of these aircraft on order, 2 have been delivered as of this writing and options on a further 6 aircraft. SIA plans to start its Kangaroo route services from Sydney to London in March 2008 via its base at Changi Airport once it receives it's third A380.

The A340-500s operate nonstop daily service to Los Angeles and Newark. The latter is currently the longest nonstop passenger service flown by any airline. The A340-500s also operate twice daily to Jakarta except when one is undergoing maintenance. This is to fully utilize the available aircraft and to provide the pilots with the requisite take-offs and landings to maintain their certifications. These are expected to be retired when the 787-9s join the fleet as the latter will offer similar long distance performance with much lower fuel consumption, higher speed, and greater passenger comfort.[citation needed]

All of Singapore Airlines' 777-200s were built as 777-200ERs, but 9V-SQ* and 9V-SR* were certified for lower thrust and MTOW to reduce costs. The 777s will start to retire from the fleet as the A330-300s are delivered starting in 2009.[citation needed]

In order to maintain the average fleet age of about five years, Singapore Airlines will need to order additional aircraft for delivery starting in 2013. Singapore Airlines is in talks with Airbus for A350s and with Boeing for additional 787s to fill this need. Singapore Airlines announced they would sign the order in 2006 and is now likely to sign in 2007.

Historic fleet edit

The airline had a history of dubbing its fleet according to plane makes. The Boeing 747-400s were dubbed "Megatop", while the Boeing 777s were called "Jubilee". The Airbus A340-500s were named "Leadership," but these have since been dropped. Names for airliners previously flown by the airline include "Superbus" for the 8 Airbus A300, "3TEN" for the 23 Airbus A310-300, "Celestar" for the 17 Airbus A340-300,"Super B" for the 23 Boeing 747-200B, "Big Top" for the 14 Boeing 747-300.

Singapore Airlines flew, for a short period of time, a Concorde that it shared with British Airways. The plane had Singapore Airlines' livery on one side, and British Airways' logo on the other.

Notes edit

Singapore Airlines Boeing 747-400
  • The A340-500 have Executive Economy cabins instead of regular Economy ones. Thus the A340s have a 2-3-2 configuration instead of the usual 2-4-2 configuration. There are also fewer rows of seats. Singapore Airlines did this because they use the A345's for their ULH routes from Singapore to Los Angeles and New York nonstop. As the A340-500 does not have the range to do this with a full passenger load, Singapore Airlines replaced the Economy cabin with an Executive Economy cabin, seating fewer people, but with greater comfort.
  • Singapore Airlines operates the world's longest nonstop flight (SQ21 and 22). It uses an A340-500 that flies from Singapore's Changi International Airport to New Jersey's Newark Liberty International Airport. The aircraft, which have a special seat configuration on 181 passengers, have its own 'Executive Economy class' and Raffles Class. When flying from Singapore to New Jersey, the plane usually flies over the North Pole and crosses the Arctic Ocean. The length of this route is 9530mi (8280nm) or 15340km.
  • The B777s follow a 3-3-3 economy configuration, with the B747-400s having a 3-4-3 economy configuration.
  • Every seat on every aircraft is equipped with Krisworld, Singapore Airlines' inflight entertainment system. Most aircraft have an AVOD (Audio & Visual On Demand) system, while older aircraft have a slightly smaller selection of movies, TV programmes, and games.
  • The A380s will be registered 9V-SKA, 9V-SKB, 9V-SKC, ..., 9V-SKJ.
  • The new A380s and 777-300ERs will feature larger "SINGAPORE AIRLINES" titles, on the A380 it is applied throughout the area between the upper and lower deck windows, on the 773 it will be in the front part of the fuselage. They will also be fitted with new cabins, including 1-2-1 seating configuration on first and business classes, as well as a newer economy class and will be fitted with the new KrisWorld in-flight entertainment system.
  • All of Singapore Airlines' 777-212s are the Extended Range (ER) models; featuring centre fuel tanks for maximum storage. The airline however chooses to only refer to the 9V-SV* registered series of aircraft as 777-200ERs as those planes are certified to 656,000 lb (298,000 kg) Maximum Take-Off Weight (MTOW) and fly the longer intercontinental routes. The 9V-SR* and 9V-SQ* registered aircraft feature derated engines which can be electronically reprogrammed to produce more thrust and thus operate longer flights at higher MTOWs if ever needed.

  • In August 2004, the airline decided to order 19 Boeing 777-300ER aircraft, and the order was signed on 23 December 2004, during which an unused option for Boeing 777 family was converted into an additional order for Boeing 777-300ER.
  • British Airways, for a short period of time, flew a Concorde (registered G-BOAD[1]) that had Singapore Airlines' livery on one side, and British Airways' logo on the other. The aircraft, operated by BA pilots and staffed with flight attendants from both airlines, flew between Singapore and London via Bahrain.
  • Singapore Airlines is the largest Boeing 777 operator in the world with 67 in service, 13 more than the next largest operator and Star Alliance partner, United Airlines. The airline has 10 more on order and another 13 on option. Singapore Airlines also recently took delivery of the 600th 777 produced.
  • It should be noted that Singapore Airlines has never painted an aircraft without its trademark tail livery. Even special liveries such as the Tropical Megatop and the Star Alliance livery still retain the signature 'Golden Pigeon' on their vertical stabilizers. Another recent example would be the 2 freighters leased to Great Wall Airlines, which suspended operations. The aircraft operated in a hybrid livery, with Great Wall fuselage colours and a SQ tail logo. With the resumption of flight operations by Great Wall Airlines in February 2007, both aircraft have since reverted back to full Great Wall Airlines livery.
