In-cooperate? edit

I see that you are often using the word "in-cooperate" in your articles. There is no such word in English, and you probably meant "incorporate". However, with reference to the Austrian Anschluß, the normal English equivalent is "annex". 213.156.113.58 (talk) 07:48, 18 January 2016 (UTC)

Thanks for the heads-up. I will go and change it in the relevant articles.

Hello, Calistemon,

I have reviewed the above and approved it for DYK. Thank you for loaning your multilingual talents to our community.

Georgejdorner (talk) 06:51, 15 February 2016 (UTC)

Hello,

I do try to lightly edit those articles in which it seems like the author's English may be a second language. My aim is improvement without change of meaning. And as a distressingly monolingual Yank, I strive to motivate all the multilingual editors that I can.

Fritz Beckhardt edit

Hello,

Given that you are fluent in German, I should like to recruit you to help on a pet project of mine. The Nazis consigned a First World War hero, Fritz Beckhardt, to the dustbin of history because he was Jewish. I rescued him, via an article in English. However, the German Wikipedia apparently has a more complete article on him. Could you lend your skills to translating and transferring relevant facts from German into English and add them to the English article?

I intend to "shop" the German article for images to add to the English one.

Georgejdorner (talk) 18:24, 15 February 2016 (UTC)

Thank you for the response. I have already found the images you sent, and have imported images from the Commons. It's disappointing to find there is no further information in the German article than in the English one. The latter does list a Beckhardt family biography in German that some helpful editor has added, but I do not know how reliable it is.

I appreciate your effort to help improve the article. It's not your fault there was nothing new to be transcribed.

Georgejdorner (talk) 22:56, 15 February 2016 (UTC)

I was not aware that Edmund Nathanael was Jewish. It would be interesting to know your source for this assertion.

If you wish, I could check my old files for anything additional on him.Georgejdorner (talk) 17:32, 16 February 2016 (UTC)

Whoops, a more careful reading of your prior note reveals there was no source.

However, the offer to dig through the files stands.Georgejdorner (talk) 17:35, 16 February 2016 (UTC)

I do believe a more thorough check will reveal that Beckhardt was one of only 18 enlisted men to win the Hoho; many officers won it as an intermediate decoration on the way to the Blue Max. Even so, the Hoho was a rare award for a non-officer, and enlisted men never received a Blue Max. I have moved away from writing in this niche, but recall these facts from my sources. Of course, Beckhardt was probably serving in the ranks because he was Jewish. Same for Nathanael.

Are you going to use the German text to work on Beckhardt's and/or Nathanael's articles?

Georgejdorner (talk) 23:14, 22 February 2016 (UTC)

I was referring to the English WP, which has articles on both men. I left Beckhardt completely cited, and Nathanael a stub. Nathanael has a listing in Above the Lines; I have it on file. Beckhardt could be rounded out with info from the German book. I am willing to clean up the article; it was one of my earlier creations, and shows my amateurism. I am also willing to expand Nathanael's bio, complete with cites.

Are you up for this collaboration?Georgejdorner (talk) 23:37, 22 February 2016 (UTC)

When I spotted your changes to Nathanael, I decided to work on him. Take a look for yourself. I did not know how to multi-ref that form of citation. If you could do so, it would help.

Do you have any more info on him?Georgejdorner (talk) 21:06, 23 February 2016 (UTC)

I have done what I can with Nathanael. Beckhardt is a different tale. He is unlisted in any of the usual histories on the subject. He is the only ace for whom I cannot find an itemized victory list. An Amazon advanced book search turns up three titles on him. The only useful one relies heavily upon the same German text that is listed in his article's Bibliography, Der Jude mit dem Hakenkreuz. Meine deutsche Familie. From what I know, Beckhardt's activism on behalf of Jewish war veterans did not make him very popular during WWI. It appears that his further defiance, of the Nazis, led to further retribution postwar, mayhap including his records.

At this point, I am unsure how much I can contribute to an update of the Beckhardt article. I can insure proper English usage in the end result if you rewrite it; I can lend my background knowledge to the editing. If there is any other support I could lend, please let me know.Georgejdorner (talk) 18:56, 24 February 2016 (UTC)

I suppose that is all for Beckhardt for now.

As for Nathanael...lo and behold, the article has undergone a six fold expansion. It just begs for DYK nomination. I want you to join me as co-nominator.Georgejdorner (talk) 05:57, 25 February 2016 (UTC)

You don't specify which method you used to check article length. I used cut-and-paste. After "ignoring infoboxes, categories, references, lists, and tables etc.", I come up with 530 characters before expansion, 3,448 afterwards. To me, that looks like nearly a 7X expansion.Georgejdorner (talk) 18:07, 25 February 2016 (UTC)

Interesting.... Two different methods of checking article length, and contradictory results. Well, there's no more to be added unless I start "inventing" information. As it is, I am inclined to run the nom; if it is rejected for length, I will withdraw it. Do you wish to be part of the nomination?Georgejdorner (talk) 00:51, 26 February 2016 (UTC)

I would not have done a thing with Edmund Nathanael, except you provoked me to it. And though I may have done the majority of the writing from texts I already knew, your knowledge of German and your research were invaluable. I asked if you wished to be a co-nominator because I believe your contributions are at least as important as mine. I am going to proceed with the nomination, and you are welcome aboard to claim your acclaim at any stage of the nomination.Georgejdorner (talk) 01:13, 26 February 2016 (UTC)

My thoughts on a hook...well, the eye-grabbing words here are "Nazi" and "Hohenzollern". "Hohenzollern" for the What the Heck factor. "Nazi" to give the hook an edge. So it comes down to that sentence you wrote that ended in cite 10. Apparently, the Nazis deleted Nathanael's name from the Hohenzollern Roll of Honor, or some equivalent. (OR alert) I would guess in the mid to late 1930s. (end original research). That sentence in the article may need to be tweaked a bit (without making it unfactual) to support the hook.

And if you know how to include the graphic in the nomination, that's a colorful little photo. Should pull some eyes. And page views.Georgejdorner (talk) 03:03, 26 February 2016 (UTC)

Worked up the article a bit. Realized that sectionating it with a lead would add a bit of length and clarity.

That's a good start on the hook, but it needs to be shorter and catchier. Let me suggest: ... that during the Nazi era, Edmund Nathanael was deleted from the list of Hohenzollern winners?

I have a review on tap for the nomination. Do you know how to put a picture in the nomination template?

How about this? ... that during the Nazi era, Edmund Nathanael was deleted from the list of Hohenzollern honorees?

And you were spot on with your comment. Felt it myself even as I typed, but was fresh out of ideas then.

And the picture?Georgejdorner (talk) 22:03, 26 February 2016 (UTC)

And now we wait and twiddle thumbs.

I must assure you, you have been a most congenial collaborator. I'll try to field the inquiries on the nom, as I have the research materials on my shelves.

Georgejdorner (talk) 22:43, 26 February 2016 (UTC)

Edmund Nathanael has been nominated for Did You Know edit

Calistemon,

Our joint nomination has just been approved. You may wish to read the review. Congrats to us, I guess.

Georgejdorner (talk) 03:08, 15 March 2016 (UTC)

Calistemon,

No, I wasn't aware of that. Still, I have long since become inured to the vagaries of DYK's "system". December 2014: 12 DYKs. May through August 2015: zip. Other months, other wildly varying results. I've just been writing articles, keeping 10 or 12 noms in play, and letting the process grind along. I do try to help other editors improve the writing in their articles—which makes me either helpful or meddling, make your choice.

Well, cobber,

I don't take them too seriously. I've let noms wither because it was too much trouble to revisit them. I have also asked for withdrawal of my own noms that turned out to be faulty. Flummoxed 'em every time.

Still, I can understand your reaction. I recently had a nom where the hook was struck though cited, approved after reinstatement, disapproved, and an bland ALT1 hook by a third party (and nomination) approved. Because I had no chance to submit a replacement hook, I felt rather hustled and asked that it be withdrawn. But I am coming to the end of this little historical niche that has engrossed me, so my DYK days may be ending.Georgejdorner (talk) 04:22, 15 March 2016 (UTC)

Georgejdorner (talk) 03:54, 15 March 2016 (UTC)

Hey, Calistemon,

Remember what I said about random DYKs? Nathanael is the last (so far) in a string of five of noms I submitted that ran on a daily basis.

Now if we could only do a DYK for Fritz Beckhardt....

Hello,

Yes, I created this article, but I have no additional info on Willi. What you see is what I had and have.

Georgejdorner (talk) 03:41, 20 March 2016 (UTC)

Hmmm, other Jewish aces or pilots? Off the top of my head, I can only summon Wilhelm Frankl, and he is dubious.

Footnote 8 in Fritz Beckhardt could be useful, if you can retrieve it through the Wayback Machine. It had a rundown on German Jewish pilots, courtesy of a community college. I seem to recall it referred to German texts (which monolingual me ignored, of course).

Another potential source is www.theaerodrome.com. If a search through the site and forums doesn't disclose any info, register and query the old hands. Some of them are the world's WWI aviation experts, and they are usually prompt to aid the neophyte.

I do have a copy of Above the Lines, the ur-text for German WWI aces. I can supply that information, if I know which aces were Jewish. Osprey Publishing prints quite a few 96 page books on WWI; again, need a name to start. This is all I can think of right now. Will send more if it occurs to me.

BTW, Edmund Nathanael racked up 5,647 page views. You may want to chalk it up on the Wall of Fame.

Georgejdorner (talk) 04:45, 21 March 2016 (UTC)

Pow! You hit the jackpot! The article you found is the very same as the deceased community college website I referred to. Scroll to bottom of the article/website, and you have a bibliography to aid you.

Neither Berthold Guthmann nor Friedrich Rüdenberg were aces, so I doubt I have info on them. But check out Wilhelm Frankl, the Pour le Merite winner. He is mentioned in several books. I believe the Nazis considered him Jewish.

Georgejdorner (talk) 06:49, 21 March 2016 (UTC)

Per the Beckhardt article, Guthmann begged Beckhardt's life from the Nazis, but lost his own later.

Georgejdorner (talk) 17:43, 21 March 2016 (UTC)

Can't help you with Schlasta. When I was writing on WWI aviation, my focus was on the flying aces, not units or aircraft.

TSV 1860 München versus TSV 1860 Munich edit

The naming convention for sports teams states:

  1. The name is used on the English-language section of the club's official website,
  2. The name has been adopted at least by a significant section of the English-language media and it is recognizable,
  3. The name is not easily confused with other clubs' names.

I couldn't find any official english website. Therefore, the first point can't really have any influence in the discussion since they don't have an english website. Here, here, and here are three examples where the media clearly has Munich instead of München. The second point favours the switch. I don't see anything confusing with the switch. I know MephistoGF prefers using Munich instead of München in player articles. So, I know at least one person will will agree. Kingjeff (talk) 05:45, 28 April 2016 (UTC)

I started a discussion here. Kingjeff (talk) 05:56, 28 April 2016 (UTC)

I am aware of that. As you know, the article names are an offshoot of the main article name. Kingjeff (talk) 15:41, 30 April 2016 (UTC)

You know that isn't how it works. The article creator had no business creating it using München instead of Munich. Kingjeff (talk) 16:27, 30 April 2016 (UTC)

Stadiums edit

Dear Calistemon, I understand your concerns. Please read my older messages, there you can see I was given permission to add these references to add more recent capacity information, more complete inauguration dates, locations etc. I'm checking if the stadium information is still up to date, because it changes a lot. Moderators told me to add references to the information, so I'll do this. I've also added several stadium pages for +10,000-capacity stadiums that didn't have a page yet. I'm almost done with checking the +10,000-capacity venues, my estimate is that I am at 80-90%. If you have any questions, please let me know. I hope this clears things up, I am given permission by moderators, please read my older messages. By the way, stadium pages might be deleted without good references, as you can see at the top of some pages. Kind regards, farmnation.

Stadiums part 2 edit

Dear Calistemon, thank you for your reaction. I am using several sites, they all seem reliable to me. I often use official club sites, and the biggest stadium websites for information. I usually double check if the figures are still up to date. A lot of stadiums reduced capacity because of harder safety regulations. In Germany for example, there are a lot of stadiums with standing places. After the Love Parade disaster, capacities of a lot of those standing areas were reduced for better safety. The capacities on Wikipedia are often still the old ones. If I change those capacities, I should add a reference moderators told me. You can see my older messages, I guess from around January/February 2016. The same with opening dates. Wikipedia pages often have inauguration dates, but they sometimes are wrong and often incomplete, like just "2004" for example. I also add days and months. At location, I also add addresses next to the city, this way people know where they can find the stadium if they want to visit. I'm also checking stadium names, a lot of stadiums change name because of new sponsorship deals. And a lot of stadiums change capacity every year, because of new stands, installation of new seats, etc. As you can see, I've added and double checked a lot of stadium information and stadium pages, and I've added references because else people don't know if it's reliable. If I'd change those pages without references, Wikipedia might become more unreliable for people. I hope you understand, if I didn't clear some things up for you enough, please let me know and I'll try to explain. Kind regards, farmnation

Stadiums part 3 edit

Hello Calistemon, I use several sites, but World of Stadiums is the most complete and up-to-date site I know. StadiumDB also is a good site, but doesn't have that much stadiums online. www.worldstadiums.com has a very large amount of stadiums, but the site is outdated. It started around the year 2000, as you can see, and a lot of information changed. As far as I know, World OF Stadiums is the most complete and up-to-date site to use, because it has a large database, and because the site doesn't excist very long, information is almost always up to date. If you know better sites, please let me know. Kind regards, farmnation

Stadiums part 4 edit

Thank you Calistemon, I will use those sources for the German stadiums in the future. Please let me know if you find other good sites for other countries. I did pretty much research, and I can tell you World of Stadiums and StadiumDB are reliable sites. Their information is up to date. I also check a lot of official club sites, and I always double check if the information is right.

What to do? edit

Good evening. I would like to ask your advice, it is true that some version of Wikipedia in sometimes different rules, but when I see the English version, or other languages, administrators or creators you are on the same line. This is something I really appreciate about your versions.

By against the French Wikipedia is a great mess.

I create, and helped improve a lot of items, but my problem is a group of buddies administrators, trying almost every time to remove my articles. The last 2 per exmples, have been done on the English, Persian, Portuguese, I respect the same criteria as yours, with sources and more. Articles (eng) (per) KTFF 50th Anniversary Cup and (Por) (eng) (ita) Consejo Sudamericano de Nuevas Federaciones.

They have surpprimed remove my articles without telling me before. I liked limit debate, argument against argument, have a banner for "The admissibility of this page is currently being discussed" and choice "(Conserve, Neutral, delete or otherwise)".

They have immediatly remove my articles, as friends administrators, they consulted between them, decided alone.

They had already attempting to remove another, there are some days ago (Article created in over 13 languages) (FRA) Équipe du Sahara occidental de football (ENG) Sahrawi national football team, article that was to keep thanks to two directors, besides my article 29 reliable sources, it becomes limit of harassment, it is not collaborative, it's true that sometimes I lost patience with them, I acknowledge my wrong I had a right to "continue like that is blocking you." They believe head or think that wiki is for them, it's a mini-oligarchy, it becomes painful, how to create articles without being disturbs?

Most of the articles I'm doing on the football teams of the NF-Board and Confederation of Independent Football Associations it is because I know them very well, it's part of my knowledge, Besides winning a prize, there is little on the subject.

My next article will be about "the Esperanto football team", with all the necessary sources, I still work the history of the team, besides there is a Esperanto language version of Wikipedia, they play only as 3 matchs, but this team to a special feature, two tournaments (2014, 2015, 2016, next in 2017), three times finalists, it is part of the culture of the members of Esperanto, a member of the NF -Board and scanf, I'm sure 99% they will delete it. They will find an excuse to remove it. There will probably still vote no fear that my article is retained.

Cordially. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2A01:E34:EE0E:ABD0:B854:9C74:3C1F:E26D (talk) 00:34, 4 November 2016 (UTC)

While I had new sources to improve articles.

I do not know what game to play this person, but it starts to do well. I think that person should have sanctions. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2A01:E34:EE0E:ABD0:B854:9C74:3C1F:E26D (talk) 10:57, 4 November 2016 (UTC)

Woodman Point edit

As the City Planner I can confirm that Woodman Point is located within the suburb of Munster. Cockburn Road forms the current suburb boundary (i.e. the land east of Cockburn Road falls within Coogee and the land west within Munster), with the northern boundary of Munster at Poore Grove. The southern boundary of Coogee is just south of Mayor Road. The southern boundary of Munster is Russell Road. I hope that clarifies the matter. Dan arndt (talk) 06:32, 16 September 2019 (UTC)

@Dan arndt: Not quite. My 2016 UPD Street directory of Perth shows indeed Cockburn Road as the boundary, with the area West, including Woodman Point and all of Woodman Point Regional Park, in Coogee, and the area East, including Woodman Light, in Munster. Google maps confirms this, as does this offical map of the City of Cockburn. Are you sure you are not mixing up Woodman Point and Regional Park (located in Coogee) with Woodman Light and Woodman Point Waste Water Treatmant Plant, the latter all in Munster? Disputed non-free use rationale for File:Western German F & AA.jpg edit

Thank you for uploading File:Western German F & AA.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this file on Wikipedia may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the file description page and adding or clarifying the reason why the file qualifies under this policy. Adding and completing one of the templates available from Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your file is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a non-free use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for files used under the non-free content policy require both a copyright tag and a non-free use rationale.

If it is determined that the file does not qualify under the non-free content policy, it might be deleted by an administrator seven days after the file was tagged in accordance with section F7 of the criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.

This bot DID NOT nominate any file(s) for deletion; please refer to the page history of each individual file for details. Thanks, FastilyBot (talk) 01:00, 29 December 2019 (UTC)
