Template talk:Color topics

Template

edit

Due to some people not understanding the list template. I am all for changing the template into a Color topic template instead. Here's sort of example of what it would look like.

Jhenderson777 (talk) 16:38, 5 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

And if you haven't noticed it already. There is a hidden comment on the Colors list. What do you think? Jhenderson777 (talk) 16:46, 5 August 2010 (UTC)Reply
I don’t think that’s a reasonable set of topics (part of the problem is that Wikipedia’s coverage of color is in general disorganized and extremely incomplete), and I don’t think the addition of a template like that to articles would actually help anyone. –jacobolus (t) 21:13, 5 August 2010 (UTC)Reply
My recommendation is to completely move this discussion to Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Color, where interested editors might participate. –jacobolus (t) 21:18, 5 August 2010 (UTC)Reply
I would have thought that would be a better place, too, but apparently not many color editors watch that page, as I haven't been able to stir up any input to the deletion discussion. But I do like the color topics template better than the color list, because it can reasonably evolve as editors find better organizations or topics to add to it, as opposed to the color list template that has an unexplained notion of "major" could only grow to become a laundry list of too many colors. As to whether it would actually help anyone, I think that's not such a big deal, compared to the color list that actively misleads and confuses with its selection and categorizations of colors. Dicklyon (talk) 02:29, 7 August 2010 (UTC)Reply
Fair enough. It probably should be renamed to something other than "List of Colors" then. Do you have any input on a potential initial set of topics? –jacobolus (t) 02:53, 7 August 2010 (UTC)Reply
Yes I changed the name and I will probably let the redirection name be deleted. Jhenderson777 (talk) 18:20, 7 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

If pink is a main color isn't cyan as well? --Mrmoustache14 (talk) 22:34, 5 October 2012 (UTC)Reply

Colour

edit

I have modified the template to take one parameter. If it is set then this template displays [Cc]olour. I have also added documentation. -- PBS (talk) 14:00, 25 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

looks fine, I tweaked it a bit per WP:BRINT. Frietjes (talk) 16:58, 25 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

Pastel colour family

edit

I've added this to the template, yes, the article is but a stub but the pastel color group does seem quite relevant, and this stub has suffered from being rather hard to find, imo. Shawn in Montreal (talk) 15:25, 2 April 2013 (UTC)Reply

Too cluttered

edit

IP editors have significantly expanded this template this month. I think it's getting to the point where it contains far too much information. Could those making the edits please excercise some more editorial discretion about which topics to include, and trim the template back to a manageable size? —Psychonaut (talk) 17:24, 19 March 2014 (UTC)Reply

Add colors to the color template

edit

Hello PBS, a suggested idea. The list of colors in the 'above' section are for the "shades of color" and not the color themselves. How about making the link to the color followed by the link to "shades" in parenthesis. Example: 'Violet (color)' followed by 'Shades of violet' as: Violet (shades). That would make the template quite a bit more useful in color searches. Thanks. Randy Kryn (talk) 12:09, 24 June 2018 (UTC)Reply

Passing this suggestion along again. Randy Kryn (talk) 02:40, 16 October 2018 (UTC)Reply

Can I add Category:Shades of color templates to Template: Color topics? ColorTheoryRGB CMYK 23:53, 15 October 2018 (UTC)Reply

Not done: edit template-protected is usually not required for edits to the documentation, categories, or interlanguage links of templates using a documentation subpage. Use the 'edit' link at the top of the green "Template documentation" box to edit the documentation subpage. — JJMC89(T·C) 04:09, 16 October 2018 (UTC)Reply

Bolden the icons below the template, so   Category becomes   Category

Also add the   Book on this topic to the template. Painting17 (talk) 00:23, 2 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

Not done for now: please establish a consensus for this alteration before using the edit template-protected template. Tried the bolding myself on other templates and was reverted, so the present consensus seems to be against the boldface type in the Bottom section. As for the Book addition, most of the links on the Book: page are already in this template. The three that aren't are covered in the Color model article. See no need for it, tho' others' mileages may vary. P.I. Ellsworth  ed. put'r there 21:28, 2 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

edit

In the Color dimensions section (group9), I am requesting the following changes and additions:

Please Remove "tone" from "Lightness (tone and value)" and put tone in with "tints & shades", so that:

Tints, tones, and shades
Lightness (value)

And please ADD:

Luminance

Then put Lightness under it, along with:

Darkness
Brightness

And optionally add these dimensions:

Iridescence
Fluorescence

Here is the group9 section with these edits made:

| group9 = Color dimensions
| list9 =
*Hue
**Dichromatism
*Colo{{#if:{}|u}}rfulness (chroma and saturation)
*Luminance
**Lightness (value)
**Darkness
**Brightness
**Iridescence
**Fluorescence
*Grayscale
*Tints, tones, and shades

}}

REASON:

edit

Basically, "tone" refers to mixing in a grey pigment into a color, similar to to tint (mix in white) and shade (mix in black). Thus "Tones" does not go with "lightness" which is a perception.

And if there is lightness, then there should be darkness, and also brightness which is distinctly different from lightness. And all those are under "luminance"

Iridescence, Fluorescence, are also dimensions of color.

Thank you! -Andy Myndex (talk) 22:28, 27 August 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Myndex: Thank you for your suggestions. No one else has commented but in principle I am happy to make these changes. Please can you update Template:Color topics/sandbox in line with your proposal? — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 08:56, 6 September 2021 (UTC)Reply

@MSGJ: I updated the sandbox for Color Dimensions, please let me know of any questions. THank you! Myndex (talk) 10:02, 8 September 2021 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, looks good. I've made a few tweaks. In general I think it is better to use the name of the article (i.e. Tints and shades rather than adding an extra word). If you think tones should be included, then perhaps that's a rationale for moving the article. What do you think? — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 12:41, 8 September 2021 (UTC)Reply
