Interesting contrast edit

Not really substantive, just noticing the differences between Winged Victory and this. Ed [talk] [majestic titan] 04:13, 5 October 2017 (UTC)Reply

Disambiguation edit

There are many statutes of Winged Victory, for example in the Victoria Memorial, London, and in many other war memorials, but perhaps most famously the Winged Victory of Samothrace.

I would assert that this statue is not the primary topic for a statue of a Winged Victory, and some disambiguation is required, with this article moved to a title disambiguated by the artist or location, Winged Victory (Lewis) or Winged Victory (Olympia, Washington) or something similar, and Winged Victory (statue) redirected to Winged victory or to Winged Victory of Samothrace. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 213.205.251.69 (talk) 10:06, 5 October 2017 (UTC)Reply

I agree, and I'm open to disambiguating by artist last name or location. ---Another Believer (Talk) 04:26, 15 May 2019 (UTC)Reply
  • Oppose I would dispute that DAB is required here. The purpose of DAB is to resolve "conflicts that arise when a potential article title is ambiguous, most often because it refers to more than one subject covered by Wikipedia". Since there are no competing articles covered by WP named "Winged Victory" there is no need to DAB. When a competing article is created this could be revisited. Further "Winged Victory" is the actual and proper name of the subject of this article. The Victoria Memorial is not named, nor is it commonly known as, "Winged Victory". It simply incorporates - in a portion of the structure - a Winged Victory motif. Chetsford (talk) 06:39, 15 May 2019 (UTC)Reply
Chetsford, I'm not sure I follow. No competing articles named "Winged Victory", but Winged Victory (disambiguation) already exists? Also, I don't understand why Winged Victory redirects to Winged Victory of Samothrace when the latter and Winged Victory (statue) are both statues... ---Another Believer (Talk) 17:43, 15 May 2019 (UTC)Reply

@Johnbod and JHunterJ: Pinging you both since you've edited the disambiguation page. Thoughts? ---Another Believer (Talk) 18:28, 15 May 2019 (UTC)Reply

I understand the ping, but: from a disambiguation point of view, the title works to solve the technical problem. I agree that there's something wrong with the title, though, but it's from a MOS:VATITLE point of view, which specifies using the artist's name as a qualifier, so in this case Winged Victory (Lewis). If someone feels like creating List of statues named Winged Victory, Winged Victory (statue) could then redirect there, or to Winged Victory of Samothrace or to Winged Victory (disambiguation) (the last as an {{R from incomplete disambiguation}}). -- JHunterJ (talk) 18:37, 15 May 2019 (UTC)Reply
That sounds good to me; I like that solution. Chetsford (talk) 19:43, 15 May 2019 (UTC)Reply
Chetsford, So, to clarify, you're ok having this page moved to Winged Victory (Lewis)? ---Another Believer (Talk) 19:50, 15 May 2019 (UTC)Reply
Yes, I think that's fine! Thank you very much for handling. Chetsford (talk) 19:51, 15 May 2019 (UTC)Reply
Done Working on updating wiki links now... ---Another Believer (Talk) 19:54, 15 May 2019 (UTC)Reply
Fine with that, but Winged Victory should absolutely not redirect to Winged Victory of Samothrace, but to the disam page. Was there ever a discussion about this? Johnbod (talk) 20:09, 15 May 2019 (UTC)Reply
Johnbod, I agree. Winged Victory should link to the disambiguation page, or just become the new disambiguation page. ---Another Believer (Talk) 20:15, 15 May 2019 (UTC)Reply
Yes, Talk:Winged Victory (novel)#Requested move. Next step is an WP:RM to move the disambiguation page to the base name to change from that primary topic to no primary topic. -- JHunterJ (talk) 12:34, 16 May 2019 (UTC)Reply

"Related memorials" section edit

I'd argue this content is not specific to the statue in Olympia and should be removed. I don't often see sections in artwork articles describing how the work is similar to others, unless sourcing specifically makes the connection(s). Thoughts? I'd remove the text myself but don't want to make drastic changes to a Good article without additional input. Thanks! ---Another Believer (Talk) 18:34, 15 May 2019 (UTC)Reply

No objections here. Chetsford (talk) 19:43, 15 May 2019 (UTC)Reply
Chetsford, Thanks, I've removed (but kept mention of another Lewis memorial in the See also section). ---Another Believer (Talk) 19:49, 15 May 2019 (UTC)Reply

Sculptures of Greco-Roman mythology? edit

Should this article be added to Category:Sculptures of Greco-Roman mythology and/or Category:Victory, like Winged Victory of Samothrace? ---Another Believer (Talk) 18:39, 15 May 2019 (UTC)Reply

I think that's a good idea. Chetsford (talk) 19:45, 15 May 2019 (UTC)Reply
Chetsford, Great! Doing now. ---Another Believer (Talk) 19:47, 15 May 2019 (UTC)Reply

Lead photo edit

The current lead photo is not bad at all, but I think one I took recently is better, and I'd like to replace it. I leave the decision to someone else, though, because I know it's easy to be biased in favor of one's own work. - Jmabel | Talk 21:50, 20 June 2020 (UTC)Reply

Jmabel - I prefer your photo and support you replacing the current photo with it. Chetsford (talk) 08:56, 30 January 2021 (UTC)Reply
Since it has been half a year and that is the first comment either way, I'll take that as sufficient endorsement. - Jmabel | Talk 13:51, 31 January 2021 (UTC)Reply
