I think that he wasn't too far away from it at one point in the mid 1960s. Basil D'Oliveira made his Test debut in 1966. He was a much better bat than Storey, but not as good a bowler. There was also Barry Knight around at this time, as well as Ray Illingworth and Fred Titmus. Tony Greig came on the scene a little later. There were almost twice as many f-c games a season in the 1960s compared with now, so aggregates, as opposed to averages, need tro be treated with caution.
