Paul Gilbert and his technique

edit

Paul Gilbert is regarded as an extremely clean alternate picker and string skipper, but I never heard of him being an exceptional tapper. Sure he taps well, but he did not bring anything new or wasn't exceptional at tapping like Stanley Jordan or Reb Beach. User:Felenoral 03:00, 13 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

Mr. Big

edit

No mention of Mr. Big at all ? After all, he recorded a lot of albums with them, toured with them, and I am tempted to say that Mr. Big was a big part of getting his solo career off the ground, as he got plenty of exposure touring and recording with them...

Let's not forget that Paul also collaborated in writing 'To Be With You', one of the most popular songs of the 90's.

More to the point...how about Racer X?

Picture

edit

Can someone put a newer picture of him from his website on here instead of this old picture?

Yngwie and Vai

edit

the bits about yngwie and vai attending GIT sounds like they took lessons there, when, as far as i or anyone else knows, they were most likely giving perfromances/seminars.

GIT

edit

"Paul also teaches at the Guitar Institute of Technology (GIT) which he attended as well Gary Hoey and many other talented guitar players." I'm having trouble parsing this sentence. I think an 'as' in "as well as Gary Hoey" is missing. Maybe it should be "attended with Gary Hoey"? Or is it trying say that Gary Hoey and others also teach there? It's so awkward that a one word change might not be enough to fix it and it should be rewritten. Better yet, the whole Gary Hoey unconnected clause could be dropped. I would do it, but I don't know what that sentence is supposed to say. Chiok 12:22, 23 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Paul Gilbert's real name

edit

Paul Gilbert's real name is Paublo Gilberti. Mr. C.C. 06:26, 13 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

No...it is actually Paul Gilbert. He did, however, create an alias, 'Pablo Gilberto,' but it was only an alias. Autocat 22:23, 26 October 2006 (UTC)AutocatReply

Influences, Hendrix

edit

I am only guessing this, but I am going to add Hendrix to the list merely because of the amount of cover's he's done and the obvious influence in his music.

Second thoughts, nevermind- if someone has some source ad it, I guess the 'blues' as an influence works enough, just thought that Hendrix seemed such a huge influence.

I don't believe a citation is needed regarding the last sentence, as among guitarists this is common knowledge.

I disagree strongly with the sentence regarding his legato technique. He is a very efficient picker and can both alternate-pick and use legato technique for blazing speed. No - he has blazing legato speed and uses it as often as alternate picking. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Brprivate (talkcontribs) 21:43, 16 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

instructor at GIT (specifically teaching buckethead)

edit

Paul's gear - update!

edit

I just went to see mr. Gilbert in Copenhagen, the 25th of May 2007, and he used the following effects:

Fulltone OCD, Xotic AC Booster, EHX Electric Mistress, EHX Poly Flanger, Geoffrey Teese RMC wah, Fulltone Deja Vibe, BOSS TU-2 tuner, MXR Phase 90 Script model. Last but not least, he had an effect that he used for distortion. I could not figure out which one it was, but it might have been the "Enter the Drive" by Divine Audio.

More to come.

Confusion about Buckethead

edit

Although Paul's official site confirms it to be untrue, there are still many people out there who believe that Buckethead is Paul Gilbert, not to mention the amount of rumors that still float about the Internet. Perhaps it's worth mentioning the scale of these rumors? Halen061088 16:06, 4 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Rumours fall under policy WP:NOT and should not be added in. If it were mentioned in a notable publication(Guitar Player)... then it could be added in as referenced text. But just adding a rumour and leaving it uncited is original research. 156.34.142.110 16:19, 4 September 2007 (UTC)Reply
It is mentioned on Paul's official site, and the site itself was actually created by Paul. So even he knows that people think he's Buckethead.

Small timing difference?

edit

At the top of the page, in the mini-bio, it says he left Mr. Big in 1996, while later on in the article it says 1997.

Just wondering which is consistent. Mattz1010 19:45, 25 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

2008 album

edit

Where has it been posted that the name if his 2008 album is going to be "Hoko"? I have been to his website and I didn't see anything about the name of the album, but maybe I just missed it... 64.185.99.145 (talk) 10:00, 31 December 2007 (UTC)ChimmyReply

It's called Silence Followed By A Deafening Roar. It was released in Japan, and releases in the US on April 8th, 2008 —Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.95.148.85 (talk) 12:20, 28 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

It's called Silence Followed By a Deafening Roar in American and Europe, but in Japanese it was decided that that was way to long a title, so they called it Houkou, or "Roar" in Japanese. Rend48 (talk) 15:35, 13 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Gear

edit

Paul did not switch from ADA preamps to Marshall Vintage Modern amplifiers - he used Laney amps for much of his career. Only recently did Paul switch to the Vintage Moderns.

Also, it would be helpful if someone put in a list of the pedals Paul uses, such as the Xonic AC Booster, or his modified ADA Flanger. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 216.212.247.0 (talk) 16:40, 14 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

The 'Gear' section needs to be updated. I see that there is mention of Laney amplifiers, but, later in the same section, the passage reads that Paul switched from ADA preamps to Marshall amplifiers. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 216.212.247.0 (talk) 16:43, 14 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

I tried to clean it up a little bit. It looks like people just added information with disregard as to what was already there. I'll clean it up further when I have some more time. Cdwillis (talk) 00:28, 27 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Addition to the Discography: Other appearances section

edit

I would like to include Revelation by Darrell Mansfield Band (1985). Paul Gilbert was the guest guitarist on a few songs. If I hear no objections I will add it to the list. CMLB (talk) 14:56, 3 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

I'll go ahead and add it in now. CMLB (talk) 14:38, 8 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Bad Citation

edit

This citation for "Top Shredders of All Time" is pretty lame. It's someone's personal website, for crying out loud. I can agree that Paul Gilbert is an amazing guitarist and probably belongs somewhere in the top 10, but come on, this is not a definitive source. Maybe if there were a poll ran in Rolling Stone and the results were cited, that would work, but not this. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 208.17.195.11 (talk) 19:06, 8 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

That was a list made by Guitar One Magazine, which went out of print on 2007. That website was just someone posting the list. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.49.184.149 (talk) 05:02, 15 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Paul Gilbert with Sammy Hagar?

edit

It seems like I read, years ago, that Paul Gilbert sang backing vocals on the two new songs on Sammy Hagar's Unboxed, but I haven't been able to find anything about it on the internet. Anyone know anything about this? Perhaps something about this could be mentioned in the article? Gringo300 (talk) 14:28, 26 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Early life

edit

No "Early life" section for him? I'm sure that there must some material for this. AKoan (talk) 10:03, 11 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

Tapping

edit

Paul Gilbert is an outstanding tapping expert. This is proven on his most recently released album, more than any before it. He is also famous as an instructor, and released an excellent instructional video for Total Guitar Television, in which he demonstrates how to tap extremely fast. The first poster stated he didn't bring anything new to tapping, this may or may not be true, however I've never seen Paul's technique used by anyone else. I'm talking specifically about, with your right hand, tapping under your left hand, and then using your left hand to hammer on and pull off, making it sound a lot faster.

One of the links does not provide the required info, but was probably not too necessary. I've replaced the other two with a current link.--Gorpik (talk) 09:12, 27 May 2016 (UTC)Reply

Racer X live albums

edit

Why aren't the Racer X live albums included. They are very popular with Racer X fans.

Live albums Extreme Volume Live (1988) Extreme Volume II Live (1992) Snowball of Doom (2002) Snowball of Doom 2 (2002) Lauriemonk (talk) 20:56, 16 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

Discography sections in musician articles only include studio releases, particularly when there is a dedicated article for full discography, as in this case.--Gorpik (talk) 08:43, 18 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

Best known for…

edit

The second sentence in the article is: “ He is best known for being the co-founder of the band Mr. Big.”

I think this is either outdated or just never was true. As far as I can tell, he was always best known as a guitar instructor (either at GIT or elsewhere but more likely his videos). I don’t see where this claim is backed up by any reference.

Do others agree? 2602:FE43:1:FF49:3543:21F8:1FD4:FCFF (talk) 05:03, 15 May 2022 (UTC)Reply

I do. That initial sentence can indeed be improved.-Gorpik (talk) 16:56, 16 May 2022 (UTC)Reply
