May have played at Stanford per this reference.
possible obituary if it's the same guy. Pay to view, NYT--anyone have access?
possible classmate of Herbert Hoover at Stanford.

This all hinges on one item: if coach Paul Downing of Oregon is the same person as Paul M. Downing who played at Stanford, there's much more to the article.
