WP:COMMONNAME. Beginning this college athletics season (2018–19), national media is starting to use simply "Nicholls", following Nicholls State University branding its athletics programs simply as "Nicholls" on its official website. For instance, the Associated Press recap of the Nicholls football team's upset of Kansas has this headline: "Fourcade leads Nicholls to 26-23 overtime win over Kansas". In contrast, the AP's recap of a 2017 game against Texas A&M is headlined, "Bussey's TD in helps Aggies to 24-14 win over Nicholls St." Also, the ESPN college football standings page uses "Nicholls Colonels", and the STATS LLC Top 25 poll uses "Nicholls".

On the basketball side, the AP was still using "Nicholls State" as late as December 2017 despite occasionally using just "Nicholls" back in the 2016-17 season, and ESPN's college basketball standings page (still showing the 2017-18 season, not yet updated for the upcoming season) uses "Nicholls St" so I am only including articles about Nicholls sports beginning with the 2018–19 school year. • Weak Oppose the university is still called Nicholls State, and other sources [1] [2] still use Nicholls State. Possibly too soon if the official recommendation just changed at the start of the school year; by November or December it may be more clear. power~enwiki (π, ν) 15:59, 2 September 2018 (UTC)Reply
Nicholls State University athletics has branded itself as simply "Nicholls" as early as 2011. However, only this year did national media follow suit. ESPN's national broadcast of this game is titled "Nicholls vs. Kansas", and the official box score (that gets distributed nationally) uses just "Nicholls". In contrast, only sources within the states of Kansas and Louisiana still use "Nicholls State", such as the Topeka Capital-Journal [3] and The Times-Picayune of New Orleans editing an AP article to add "State" after "Nicholls" in the headline, "Chase Fourcade leads Nicholls State to overtime win at Kansas", while still using simply "Nicholls" within the story. Meanwhile, an original feature story about Fourcade in the Times-Picayune used "Nicholls State" once then "Nicholls" the rest of the way [4].
Also, just because a university uses "State" in its name doesn't mean it uses "State" in athletics branding. The article about Stephen F. Austin State University sports omits "State" in its name: Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks and Ladyjacks, for instance.
Bottom line: Wikipedia article titles should reflect what people see in the national news media. Arbor to SJ (talk) 23:21, 2 September 2018 (UTC)Reply
  • Support They are Nicholls now. ESPN's box score their game against Kansas refers to them as Nicholls. Additionally throughout the radio broadcast for the game, the radio announcers for Kansas called them Nicholls.--Rockchalk717 04:42, 6 September 2018 (UTC)Reply
Additionally: The Times-Picayune in New Orleans used "Nicholls" (without State) in its recap of Tulane's home game win over Nicholls. So does the official box score. ESPN's broadcast of this game is titled "Nicholls vs. Tulane". Arbor to SJ (talk) 06:36, 9 September 2018 (UTC)Reply
  • Comment. Personally, I am neutral here, however, I think it's worth pointing out that the "State" in the title here may be seen as a potential sort of WP:NATURALDAB to avoid potential confusion with the athletic teams of Nichols College. Similar to the way we handle Boston College and Boston University on Wikipedia. Just a thought. Ejgreen77 (talk) 20:52, 27 September 2018 (UTC)Reply
