NBA Salary Cap

The article makes no mention of the salary cap, which is an extremely complex topic. Discussing it here would probably be too difficult, but Wikipedia does have an article titled "NBA Salary Cap" that explains it all very well. At the very least, this link should be listed in the articles "See Also" section. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 98.220.251.76 (talk) 06:42, 7 November 2009 (UTC)

I think that's a good idea. Zagalejo^^^ 20:35, 12 November 2009 (UTC)

Expansion?

Citations are needed, but from what I know is the expansion plan was grounded to a halt. The NBA may expand the number of teams to 32 in the next decade (2010's), the cities most likely to have a future NBA franchise are Seattle to fill the void left by the Supersonics' move; the Kansas City metro area or Saint Louis, Missouri; and Las Vegas, Nevada where it hosted the 2007 NBA all-star game, the first time in a non-NBA team city. But the city of Seattle hasn't approved the new sports arena to fill the Sonics' void for a 2012 replacement team, and the arenas (Tacomadome) in nearby Tacoma, Washington and Vancouver, British Columbia should house the team if only they are brought to league standard. + 71.102.7.77 (talk) 20:00, 5 March 2010 (UTC)

Referees?

There should be a section devoted to the referees in this article. They are governed by the NBA just as players are, and they are an important part of the league, especially with the Donoghy betting scandal. Fdssdf 22:30, 29 April 2010 (UTC)

Done with this edit. Thanks for the request. Woody (talk) 20:25, 15 April 2011 (UTC)
I removed this entry because one Serbian player is already listed. That section serves as a highlight of certain notable foreign players and is not meant to be complete. So, to keep the section manageable, we should only include one per country. Thank.—Chris!c/t 20:46, 15 April 2011 (UTC)
Personally I think the every person should be removed unless you can provide a reference for each one that shows they have had some international influence: ie actually influenced people. At the moment it is just a section of international players who have achieved some success, listing one player per country. How is that encyclopedic? We don't see it in other article about top tier leagues for other sports. The section would be much better if it was a paragraph of text that gives a history of foreign players in the NBA and whether the NBA has become a magnet for foreign stars. As it is, it does not show the reader anything, particularly in relation to the section header. Woody (talk) 22:42, 15 April 2011 (UTC)
I agree with Woody. I think the list should be removed and replaced with a section about how and when international players started to enter the NBA, the success of several international players who won MVP (Nash and Nowitzki in the 2000s) or who have been inducted to the HoF, the increase of international players in the draft, the pre-season and regular season games played outside the U.S., broadcast of NBA outside the U.S., possible expansion in Europe, marketing partnership with international companies, etc. Here's some good articles that could be used as reference if anyone want to start the rewrite:
This may need a lot of work, but when rewrite is done, the article would have plenty of good material about the NBA's international influence, and not just a list of famous international players. — MT (talk) 12:58, 16 April 2011 (UTC)

(Place under Other Developments Section)

On November 26, 2011, there were talks about the lockout finally being over after 149 days. Early that morning, according to NBA.com, there was a tentative agreement made that would bring back the NBA. Since this is a tentative agreement, the majority of the owners and players must agree upon the details and conditions of this agreement in order for the lockout to officially be over. If this happens, then the first NBA games will start on Christmas Day 2011 in a triple-header: Chicago Bulls at Los Angeles Lakers, Miami Heat at Dallas Mavericks, and Boston Celtics at New York Knicks. 74.132.37.140 (talk) 09:32, 26 November 2011 (UTC)

All Star Teams

Hello!
I have been looking but smiply cannot find this. Should there not be a page dealing with the actual all-star teams of the two conferences in the NBA. What I mean is an infobox of the two teams showing the stats and jerseys as we would for any other NBA team. (Or at least a subsection/sections in any of the following articles: NBA All-Star Game, NBA All-Star Game records or the Eastern Conference (NBA)/Western Conference (NBA) - probably the last two'd be best.) Thoughts? BigSteve (talk) 08:27, 27 February 2012 (UTC)

Lakers Championships

To be historically accurate when referring to the number of championships, I would like to see the Los Angeles Lakers listed with 11 championships and the Minneapolis Lakers listed with 5. You cannot say that the LA Lakers have 16 championships when they factually do not. If you are to refer to the Lakers as an organization absent of reference by city, then yes, they have 16. 199.197.2.156 (talk) 13:18, 19 January 2011 (UTC)

Generally when franchises move, they officially take their championships with them as the championships belong to the team that won them, not the city they were won in. So technically all 16 were won by the Lakers Franchise which is currently in LA. As much as I know fans in cities of teams that have moved want to still claim them, officially the championships moved with the team. -DJSasso (talk) 13:38, 19 January 2011 (UTC)
I agree. It's common knowledge that when referring to championships won by a team, it is regarding how many that franchise has won rather than how many the franchise won in a particular city. This is true for other North American professional sports leagues. Championships belong to the franchise, not the city. AllPurposeGamer (talk) 19:40, 19 January 2011 (UTC)
I agree, the Lakers have 16 as of this current date, (2013), it's what they advertise and the NBA concurs.Reigndog (talk) 22:58, 2 May 2013 (UTC)

Proposed merge with List of National Basketball Association team abbreviations

These abbreviations should possible be added to the table. DGG ( talk ) 19:11, 26 April 2013 (UTC)

It looks intuitive, is probably correct, but is it verifiable to what extent this is common? Are there any deviations among the media. Maybe it's because I'm too familiar with US cities and their sports teams, but this almost seems too trivial to bother to merge.—Bagumba (talk) 19:42, 26 April 2013 (UTC)
  • I'd be more inclined to delete that article. It's unsourced. I'm sure some of those abbreviations are in common use, such as on network broadcasts, but the information seems overly trivial. --BDD (talk) 16:26, 1 May 2013 (UTC)

Link to the previous discussion on Flags in the NBA articles

There was a previous discussion on flag use in NBA articles and from what I could tell at least, some form of consensus, that not only this article, but other NBA articles shouldn't be using flag icons.

What I find trivial about this is that not only did User:Bagumba take part in that discussion and not only agree with removing the flag icons from this article, but he enforced the consensus at that time. So I'm not sure why he readded them here. Either he forgot that he had taken part in that discussion or he has changed his mind. Either way, there was a discussion about the flag icon removal on this topic previously.--JOJ Hutton 14:33, 8 June 2013 (UTC)

Was on a touch screen so I did the simple undo when your edit removed the country names altogether, not just the flag. Without digging further at the time, your reasoning was a cryptic MOS, and djsasso had originally reverted citing long-standing version and MOS as well. I'd suggest we all AGF and allow that WP:CCC and see if the merits of the last discussion have changed. I don't regularly follow that MOS, so keepers should mention if anything signif to this case has changed.—Bagumba (talk) 15:29, 8 June 2013 (UTC)
That discussion is clearly about removing them from all star articles when mentioning individual players. I do see you mentioning removing them from this page and Bagumba agreeing. But anyone else in that discussion was talking about all star articles. There has never been a discussion to remove them from this page. If there was it would have/should have been either on this page or linked to from this page to get input of people interested in the discussion. I skipped that discussion because it indicated it was talking about all star game rosters which is a completely different topic and one I agree with removing them on. -DJSasso (talk) 16:28, 8 June 2013 (UTC)
It'd be easiest to just throw out how we got here. What is the rationale now for keeping flags here? From what I remember, MOS before discouraged its use in infoboxes unless the subject represented a country.—Bagumba (talk) 16:57, 8 June 2013 (UTC)
Well the MOS makes an exception for international sporting events. Being that there are teams in two different countries in this league it is an international league so the MOS allows for flags to be used. -DJSasso (talk) 17:38, 8 June 2013 (UTC)
Whereas teams in events like the Olympics or World Cup represent their country via national teams, the teams in the NBA do not represent their country, nor does the NBA represent these countries. Also, note that NFL, MLB, and NHL do not have flags in their infobox either.—Bagumba (talk) 18:42, 8 June 2013 (UTC)
NFL only has teams in the US and NHL had them until the other day when an edit war removed them (which is how it was noticed here). International competition doesn't necessarily mean that the teams are representing their countries officially. -DJSasso (talk) 13:33, 10 June 2013 (UTC)
The number of countries in the NFL is irrelevant, as the real question is what is gained by having a flag next to a country a sports league is based in. Also not sure about the point you are alluding to with the "international competition" comment. Excerpts from the MOS that support its inclusion in the case of the NBA or similar leagues would be helpful to the discussion. Thanks.—Bagumba (talk) 19:03, 10 June 2013 (UTC)
It isn't irrelevant because that is the whole point, the NFL not having teams in other countries means its not an international competition like the NBA is. The teams represent the cities they are based in. What is gained is that it speeds up recognition of the fact that the league spans two countries. It makes the infobox much more useful. My comment about international competition was in regards to the MOS which states "Examples of acceptable exceptions include military conflict infobox templates and infoboxes that include international competitions" Which was a reference to you mentioning that the MOS only allowed flags when players were representing a country which is true and has its own section in the MOS. But the quote above is about more general uses. In this case where a league is based. -DJSasso (talk) 19:25, 10 June 2013 (UTC)
Based on the World Cup and Olympic example at WP:INFOBOXFLAG, that wasn't my interpretation. I'll start a discussion at MOS:ICON. If there is consensus for leagues, then the wording should can be improved.—Bagumba (talk) 20:50, 10 June 2013 (UTC)

First section superfluous 'stuff'

First of all, English is not my native language, so if I write in a weird way, that'll be the reason :-)

In the opening paragraph, first sentence, it is mentioned that the NBA is "one of the Big Four major sports leagues in North America" (with "Big Four" linking to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Major_professional_sports_leagues_in_the_United_States_and_Canada). The fourth sentence of the opening paragraph, the exact same information is repeated: "The NBA is one of the four major North American professional sports leagues" (with "major North American professional sports leagues" linking to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Major_professional_sports_leagues_in_the_United_States_and_Canada too).

One of those should be removed, as it's unneeded.

Agreed. I removed the first "Big Four" mention. Zagalejo^^^ 01:09, 26 June 2013 (UTC)

Players' Salaries

I know this question isn't directly related to this article, but I thought it'd be the right place to suggest this: I think every NBA player should have their current salary displayed on their wiki page, just like their height, wight, etc. It's relevant and interesting to know - if you you type any player's name on Google you'll see that it tells you what their yearly wage is. This small project can easily get going..any thoughts/ideas about it? Shalom11111 (talk) 02:46, 4 June 2013 (UTC)

That was a working infobox feature in the past. However, keeping it updated over time is harder than it sounds. There really aren't that many active basketball editors to do the work. Zagalejo^^^ 05:33, 4 June 2013 (UTC)
Sorry for only responding now and thanks, I just saw this. Interesting, I didn't know it used to exist in the past, too bad it longer does. Updating a player's salary is a matter of seconds, and the fact that google provides it all and that amount number changes only once a year would make it an easy task for sports fans wikipedians. Shalom11111 (talk) 04:07, 24 June 2013 (UTC)
Updating one player's article would only take a few seconds, but updating all of them would take a good amount of time. And I know from experience that a single editor would probably end up doing most of the work. Most readers wouldn't know by looking if a salary is up-to-date, and wouldn't think that anything needed changing. Unfortunately, there are limits to what can realistically be done on Wikipedia. The truth is that dedicated sports websites just do a better job with these things. Zagalejo^^^ 05:26, 24 June 2013 (UTC)
I see what you're saying, though I don't fully agree with everything. As I said, this update would most likely only have to be done once a year, and only for active players of course. That means there're only a couple thousands of them, which is relatively very little. I don't think it'd become a single-wikipeidan project, but I guess that as of now I'll have to hold on to this idea unless/until more support for it arrives. Horribly awkward/unclear sentence in Surging Popularity section

"Former league commissioner David Stern who took office on February 1, 1984 before retiring February 1, 2014, oversaw the expansion and growth of the NBA to a global commodity."

He's a former league commissioner now. He wasn't while he oversaw the expansion and growth... Given the sentence mentions his retirement date, is it really necessary to refer to him as "former league commissioner?" The sentence as it stands almost seems to imply that he'd been commissioner before taking office in 1984. I'm pretty sure that wasn't the writer's intent. — Preceding unsigned comment added by TimBRoy (talkcontribs) 16:53, 17 January 2015 (UTC)

"During the regular season, each team plays 82 games, 41 each home and away. A team faces opponents in its own division four times a year (16 games)."

Should be "A team faces each opponent in its own division four times a year"

The way it is currently written makes it seem as though the season is 4 years long, as it would take 4 years to play 16 games playing only 4 division games a year. Goofyd00d (talk) 03:19, 2 February 2015 (UTC)

If you are making a suggestion for the related WikiProject, you should make your suggestion at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject National Basketball Association. Though consensus can change, be aware of the existing consensus at Wikipedia:WikiProject_National_Basketball_Association/Style_advice#NBA_highlights. Cheers.—Bagumba (talk) 21:50, 27 May 2015 (UTC)

rewrites needed

both the 50's era and 60's era mention the same teams being moved to the same locations. Someone needs to clean this up. Plus there are sections written as if English were a second language ot the writer. Kind of disapointing for an article on the #4 Major League Sports league in the North American Continent —Preceding unsigned comment added by 206.16.237.230 (talk) 16:24, 3 August 2010 (UTC)

The 1950s history also has an outright error, referring to the Lakers as being from Los Angeles when they were still in Minneapolis. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 98.110.150.153 (talk) 07:01, 17 June 2015 (UTC)

Brooklyn, for the record

Date Brooklyn was removed from this article: May 14, 2015. Date Brooklyn was first readded to this article October, 14, 2015. Date discussion was started on Brooklyn Nets page October 14, 2015. That's FIVE months to the date. I think 5 months is clearly long enough to establish a current consensus. - BilCat (talk) 22:42, 18 October 2015 (UTC)

Head Coaching Records

Why does it show the division record for coaches instead of the conference ranking?

Division ranking is nearly useless while conference ranking allows us to see where they actually ended up vs the rest of the competition at a quick glance, while division doesnt. could be a stacked or bad division — Preceding unsigned comment added by Keeksmarone (talkcontribs) 11:00, 24 June 2016 (UTC)

National Basketball AssociationNBA – Very long name. For examples: BBC is not at British Broadcasting Corporation. IMDb is not at "Internet Movie Database". 94.67.211.4 (talk) 08:29, 24 August 2016 (UTC)

  • Comment: We do not use abbreviations/acronyms in articles titles merely because the full name may be "very long". The decision to whether to use the abbreviation/acronym or the long name is governed by WP:ACRONYMTITLE: "Acronyms should be used in a page name if the subject is known primarily by its abbreviation and that abbreviation is primarily associated with the subject (e.g. NASA; in contrast, consensus has rejected moving Central Intelligence Agency to its acronym, in view of arguments that the full name is used in professional and academic publications). In general, if readers somewhat familiar with the subject are likely to only recognise the name by its acronym, then the acronym should be used as a title.". The question is whether that rule should apply here, just like the NASA, BBC or IMdb articles currently do. Or should it remain the status quo like the Central Intelligence Agency page and CIA remaining as a primary redirect. Zzyzx11 (talk) 11:42, 24 August 2016 (UTC)
  • Oppose. Yes the abbreviation is commonly used. No it should not be the title. oknazevad (talk) 14:37, 24 August 2016 (UTC)
  • Oppose: Although NBA may be commonly understood by American readers or those who follow basketball, it is not universally understood in the rest of the world. Although I know that it relates to an American sports organisation, I never have a clue whether that sport is basketball or baseball, and I suspect I am not alone. In order for clarification, the title should remain at National Basketball Association, with a redirect from NBA (as already exists). Skinsmoke (talk) 17:56, 24 August 2016 (UTC)

It looks like a duck to me but it probably doesn't matter at this point. Clear consensus not to move. Lizard (talk) 03:40, 30 August 2016 (UTC)
  • Oppose Agree with previous comments, plus there is already a redirect for "NBA," so anyone searching the term will end up there so there is no issue with confusion. Rikster2 (talk) 15:29, 25 August 2016 (UTC)
  • Oppose I don't see particularly strong arguments to use a colloquialism here. For instance, the association's website reads "The official site of the National Basketball Association." This tells me that the more professional and encyclopedic title is not completely unknown or obscure. Taylor Trescott - my talk + my edits 03:32, 26 August 2016 (UTC)
  • Oppose for the reasons listed above by previous editors. The same would apply for the National Football League, National Hockey League, and Major League Baseball. Further adding to the reality that the full name isn't obscure or rarely used, in both radio and TV broadcasts, the copyright notice is always given as "property of the National Basketball Association". --JonRidinger (talk) 03:32, 27 August 2016 (UTC)
  • Oppose per Taylor Trescott among others. Graham (talk) 03:37, 27 August 2016 (UTC)
  • Support move per MOS:ABBR#Acronyms as disambiguators and per WP:COMMONNAME. 31.52.4.146 (talk) 13:27, 27 August 2016 (UTC)
  • Comment - I am just going to ask straight out since the edit histories are so similar - are you the same person as the nominator? I have just never seen much overlap between film and the National Basketball Association until these three IPs. Rikster2 (talk) 13:02, 29 August 2016 (UTC)
  • Oppose per all other users voting oppose, particularly JonRidinger. —DangerousJXD (talk) 22:31, 27 August 2016 (UTC)
  • Oppose. The NBA is frequently referred to as the National Basketball Association; I heard this myself only the other day, multiple times, on SportsCenter. By contrast, the BBC is almost never actually referred to as the British Broadcasting Corporation except in a legal context. A great deal of sports writing spells out the names of sport governing bodies pretty frequently.  — SMcCandlish ¢ ≽ʌⱷ҅ʌ≼  20:35, 30 August 2016 (UTC)

Checklinks report for GA prep

In advance of the impending GA review, I found these red flag external links via the Checklinks tool:

  1. Refs 20 and 56 have been returning a 404 error since November 2016   Done by Jd02022092
  2. Refs 19 and 2221 redirect to the main Yahoo! Sports page and will likely need to be recovered via an archive before IABot recovers them.
  3. Links for Africa, India, New Zealand, and other world perspectives redirect to their websites' main pages while some change the domain entirely.

A full report of the external links in this article can be found here. I do not have time to fix these links as I am turning in for the night. jd22292 (Jalen D. Folf) (talk) 04:56, 14 July 2017 (UTC)

Requesting WP:CLOSE per the quickfail. jd22292 (Jalen D. Folf) (talk) 03:20, 20 July 2017 (UTC)
You are more prepared than I thought perhaps you were. But really, it should be a lot further along before even a nomination is placed; it gives the impression that you aren't aware of what it needs. Don't be discouraged. It would be an astounding feat for this to get promoted. And WP:CLOSE doesn't really necessarily apply to simple talk discussions unless a bot has been programmed to archive it. dannymusiceditor Speak up! 03:48, 20 July 2017 (UTC)

Notable Foreign Players

I believe that one of the greatest foreign players has been overlooked. Lithuanian player Zydrunas Ilgauskas played from 1996 (a first rounder) until 2011 in the NBA. He Made the NBA All-Rookie First Team and was the NBA Rookie Challenge MVP in 1998. He was also a 2x All-Star while playing for the Cavaliers. I believe that these accomplishments alone justify his place on this list.

Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 132.25.0.207 (talk) 09:35, 2 March 2018 (UTC)

Divisions of Time?

A simple question. Although I didn't make any changes, the division between 1.2, 1.3, and 1.4 seems arbitrary. Presumably, the 3 point line delineates the first two. Is there a general consensus that one can separate the 1979-1988 years of "surging popularity" (1.3) from the "modern era" of 1988 forward? (1.4) The success of individual franchises or divisions doesn't suggest that the NBA had different historical eras, does it?

I recommend combining 1.3 and 1.4. Gprobins (talk) 22:05, 14 May 2018 (UTC)

Traded-Waived-Signed Dilemma

As I'm sure everyone knows, on July 25, 2018, Carmelo Anthony was officially traded to the Atlanta Hawks.[1] On August 1, 2018, Melo cleared waivers and officially became a free agent. While he did not play a game for the Hawks, he was officially traded to the Hawks and remained a member of the team for about a week. Derrick Rose is an example of another player that has gone through the trade-waive-sign train. Rose was traded to the Utah Jazz and was waived two days later to ultimately sign with the Minnesota Timberwolves.[2]

My question remains that if they were members of the team after an official trade, should their info box display this? I would argue yes in some stuations. My reasoning comes from a situation that would revolve around an injury. If playerA is traded to a teamB and they are injured or get injured before debuting with their new teamB (let's just say for a month in this case, before being waived/traded by teamB), I would assume their info box would include teamB even though they never actually suited up for a game. I cannot think of a specific instance that this has happened right off the top of my head but I'm sure it's relatively common especially among lesser known players. For a real world example, Let's say Kawhi Leonard doesn't play a game for the Toronto Raptors and they then decide to trade him to the Lakers in January. He then makes his debut for the Lakers in February where he continues on with his career. In a situation like this, I would argue that even though Kawhi never played for the Raptors, he was still a member of the team and therefore his info box should display this.

Back to the Carmelo Anthony situation and others like it, people should know that he was traded to the Hawks (yes it is on the page but within the context of his whole professional career and easily missed unless looking for it). If there was a way that we could include these teams in the info boxes differently than actual teams they've suited up and played for, I think that could be a solid solution to this (just as D-league/G-league teams are indented with the arrow). Also I understand that there is nothing horribly wrong with the way it is done now but I just thought this could be a good addition to NBA players pages.RichieConant34 (talk) 17:27, 4 August 2018 (UTC)

There's tradeoffs any way we do this. There was a strong consensus to limit it to teams which they played a game at Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Basketball/Archive_6#Teams_listed_in_biography_infobox.—Bagumba (talk) 19:12, 4 August 2018 (UTC)
