NBA Salary Cap

The article makes no mention of the salary cap, which is an extremely complex topic. Discussing it here would probably be too difficult, but Wikipedia does have an article titled "NBA Salary Cap" that explains it all very well. Expansion?

Citations are needed, but from what I know is the expansion plan was grounded to a halt. The NBA may expand the number of teams to 32 in the next decade (2010's), the cities most likely to have a future NBA franchise are Seattle to fill the void left by the Supersonics' move; the Kansas City metro area or Saint Louis, Missouri; and Las Vegas, Nevada where it hosted the 2007 NBA all-star game, the first time in a non-NBA team city. But the city of Seattle hasn't approved the new sports arena to fill the Sonics' void for a 2012 replacement team, and the arenas (Tacomadome) in nearby Tacoma, Washington and Vancouver, British Columbia should house the team if only they are brought to league standard. + 71.102.7.77 (talk) 20:00, 5 March 2010 (UTC)

Predrag "Peja" Stojakovic is from Serbia and not croatia although he was born in croatia he is of serbian ethnicity and he has only playes for the yugoslav national team wich is now the serbian national team therefore this should be changed. Personally I think the every person should be removed unless you can provide a reference for each one that shows they have had some international influence: ie actually influenced people. At the moment it is just a section of international players who have achieved some success, listing one player per country. How is that encyclopedic? We don't see it in other article about top tier leagues for other sports. The section would be much better if it was a paragraph of text that gives a history of foreign players in the NBA and whether the NBA has become a magnet for foreign stars. I agree with Woody. I think the list should be removed and replaced with a section about how and when international players started to enter the NBA, the success of several international players who won MVP (Nash and Nowitzki in the 2000s) or who have been inducted to the HoF, the increase of international players in the draft, the pre-season and regular season games played outside the U.S., broadcast of NBA outside the U.S., possible expansion in Europe, marketing partnership with international companies, etc. Here's some good articles that could be used as reference if anyone want to start the rewrite:

Early that morning, according to NBA.com, there was a tentative agreement made that would bring back the NBA. Since this is a tentative agreement, the majority of the owners and players must agree upon the details and conditions of this agreement in order for the lockout to officially be over. All Star Teams

Hello!
I have been looking but smiply cannot find this. Should there not be a page dealing with the actual all-star teams of the two conferences in the NBA. What I mean is an infobox of the two teams showing the stats and jerseys as we would for any other NBA team. (Or at least a subsection/sections in any of the following articles: NBA All-Star Game, NBA All-Star Game records or the Eastern Conference (NBA)/Western Conference (NBA) - probably the last two'd be best.) Lakers Championships

To be historically accurate when referring to the number of championships, I would like to see the Los Angeles Lakers listed with 11 championships and the Minneapolis Lakers listed with 5. You cannot say that the LA Lakers have 16 championships when they factually do not. Generally when franchises move, they officially take their championships with them as the championships belong to the team that won them, not the city they were won in. So technically all 16 were won by the Lakers Franchise which is currently in LA. I agree. It's common knowledge that when referring to championships won by a team, it is regarding how many that franchise has won rather than how many the franchise won in a particular city. It looks intuitive, is probably correct, but is it verifiable to what extent this is common? Are there any deviations among the media. There was a previous discussion on flag use in NBA articles and from what I could tell at least, some form of consensus, that not only this article, but other NBA articles shouldn't be using flag icons.

What I find trivial about this is that not only did User:Bagumba take part in that discussion and not only agree with removing the flag icons from this article, but he enforced the consensus at that time. So I'm not sure why he readded them here. Either he forgot that he had taken part in that discussion or he has changed his mind. Was on a touch screen so I did the simple undo when your edit removed the country names altogether, not just the flag. Without digging further at the time, your reasoning was a cryptic MOS, and djsasso had originally reverted citing long-standing version and MOS as well. I'd suggest we all AGF and allow that WP:CCC and see if the merits of the last discussion have changed. That discussion is clearly about removing them from all star articles when mentioning individual players. I do see you mentioning removing them from this page and Bagumba agreeing. But anyone else in that discussion was talking about all star articles. There has never been a discussion to remove them from this page. If there was it would have/should have been either on this page or linked to from this page to get input of people interested in the discussion. Whereas teams in events like the Olympics or World Cup represent their country via national teams, the teams in the NBA do not represent their country, nor does the NBA represent these countries. The number of countries in the NFL is irrelevant, as the real question is what is gained by having a flag next to a country a sports league is based in. Also not sure about the point you are alluding to with the "international competition" comment. It isn't irrelevant because that is the whole point, the NFL not having teams in other countries means its not an international competition like the NBA is. The teams represent the cities they are based in. What is gained is that it speeds up recognition of the fact that the league spans two countries. It makes the infobox much more useful. My comment about international competition was in regards to the MOS which states "Examples of acceptable exceptions include military conflict infobox templates and infoboxes that include international competitions" Which was a reference to you mentioning that the MOS only allowed flags when players were representing a country which is true and has its own section in the MOS. First section superfluous 'stuff'

First of all, English is not my native language, so if I write in a weird way, that'll be the reason :-)

In the opening paragraph, first sentence, it is mentioned that the NBA is "one of the Big Four major sports leagues in North America" (with "Big Four" linking to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Major_professional_sports_leagues_in_the_United_States_and_Canada). The fourth sentence of the opening paragraph, the exact same information is repeated: "The NBA is one of the four major North American professional sports leagues" (with "major North American professional sports leagues" linking to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Major_professional_sports_leagues_in_the_United_States_and_Canada too).

One of those should be removed, as it's unneeded.

Players' Salaries

I know this question isn't directly related to this article, but I thought it'd be the right place to suggest this: I think every NBA player should have their current salary displayed on their wiki page, just like their height, wight, etc. It's relevant and interesting to know - if you you type any player's name on Google you'll see that it tells you what their yearly wage is. Sorry for only responding now and thanks, I just saw this. Interesting, I didn't know it used to exist in the past, too bad it longer does. Updating a player's salary is a matter of seconds, and the fact that google provides it all and that amount number changes only once a year would make it an easy task for sports fans wikipedians. Updating one player's article would only take a few seconds, but updating all of them would take a good amount of time. And I know from experience that a single editor would probably end up doing most of the work. Most readers wouldn't know by looking if a salary is up-to-date, and wouldn't think that anything needed changing. Unfortunately, there are limits to what can realistically be done on Wikipedia. I see what you're saying, though I don't fully agree with everything. As I said, this update would most likely only have to be done once a year, and only for active players of course. That means there're only a couple thousands of them, which is relatively very little. I don't think it'd become a single-wikipeidan project, but I guess that as of now I'll have to hold on to this idea unless/until more support for it arrives. Horribly awkward/unclear sentence in Surging Popularity section

He's a former league commissioner now. He wasn't while he oversaw the expansion and growth... Given the sentence mentions his retirement date, is it really necessary to refer to him as "former league commissioner?" The sentence as it stands almost seems to imply that he'd been commissioner before taking office in 1984. Revision for League Championships Section

Include the current names of the teams that have won a championship and not previous names. conference champions

I think we should start adding the number of conference championships a player has won on their lists of accomplishments. Similar to how it's done for football players. For example saying Kobe Bryant is a 5x NBA champion and a 7x Western Conference champion. rewrites needed

both the 50's era and 60's era mention the same teams being moved to the same locations. Someone needs to clean this up. Plus there are sections written as if English were a second language ot the writer. Why does it show the division record for coaches instead of the conference ranking?

Notable Foreign Players

I believe that one of the greatest foreign players has been overlooked. Lithuanian player Zydrunas Ilgauskas played from 1996 (a first rounder) until 2011 in the NBA. He Made the NBA All-Rookie First Team and was the NBA Rookie Challenge MVP in 1998. He was also a 2x All-Star while playing for the Cavaliers. I believe that these accomplishments alone justify his place on this list.

Divisions of Time?

A simple question. Although I didn't make any changes, the division between 1.2, 1.3, and 1.4 seems arbitrary. Presumably, the 3 point line delineates the first two. Is there a general consensus that one can separate the 1979-1988 years of "surging popularity" (1.3) from the "modern era" of 1988 forward? (1.4) The success of individual franchises or divisions doesn't suggest that the NBA had different historical eras, does it?

Traded-Waived-Signed Dilemma

As I'm sure everyone knows, on July 25, 2018, Carmelo Anthony was officially traded to the Atlanta Hawks. On August 1, 2018, Melo cleared waivers and officially became a free agent. While he did not play a game for the Hawks, he was officially traded to the Hawks and remained a member of the team for about a week. Derrick Rose is an example of another player that has gone through the trade-waive-sign train. Rose was traded to the Utah Jazz and was waived two days later to ultimately sign with the Minnesota Timberwolves.

My question remains that if they were members of the team after an official trade, should their info box display this? I would argue yes in some stuations. My reasoning comes from a situation that would revolve around an injury. If playerA is traded to a teamB and they are injured or get injured before debuting with their new teamB (let's just say for a month in this case, before being waived/traded by teamB), I would assume their info box would include teamB even though they never actually suited up for a game. I cannot think of a specific instance that this has happened right off the top of my head but I'm sure it's relatively common especially among lesser known players. For a real world example, Let's say Kawhi Leonard doesn't play a game for the Toronto Raptors and they then decide to trade him to the Lakers in January. He then makes his debut for the Lakers in February where he continues on with his career. In a situation like this, I would argue that even though Kawhi never played for the Raptors, he was still a member of the team and therefore his info box should display this.

Back to the Carmelo Anthony situation and others like it, people should know that he was traded to the Hawks (yes it is on the page but within the context of his whole professional career and easily missed unless looking for it). If there was a way that we could include these teams in the info boxes differently than actual teams they've suited up and played for, I think that could be a solid solution to this (just as D-league/G-league teams are indented with the arrow). Also I understand that there is nothing horribly wrong with the way it is done now but I just thought this could be a good addition to NBA players pages.RichieConant34 (talk) 17:27, 4 August 2018 (UTC)

I added needed sources within the Surging popularity section and did some restructuring.
