How is this article sufficiently notable to be worth an article? Sure, there's some media coverage, but so what? The media covers all sorts of stuff that isn't notable in the long run. Rklawton (talk) 23:25, 24 February 2013 (UTC)Reply
Agreed. This article should probably be deleted if the criteria for notability are not met. I tagged this article with multiple issues, but this was removed by User:86.40.198.66 on 19 March 2013, without any clear indication why or any obvious addressing of the issues. I re-instated the tags on 22 March. Jodon | Talk 16:17, 22 March 2013 (UTC)Reply
I added the notability tag for the following reasons:
If reliable sources cover the person only in the context of a single event.
If that person otherwise remains, and is likely to remain, a low-profile individual. Biographies in these cases can give undue weight to the event and conflict with neutral point of view. In such cases, it is usually better to merge the information and redirect the person's name to the event article.
It is not the case that the event is significant and the individual's role within it is substantial and well-documented – as in the case of John Hinckley, Jr., who shot President Ronald Reagan in 1981.
The significance of an event or individual is indicated by how persistent the coverage is in reliable sources. It is important for editors to understand two clear differentiations of the People notable for only one event guideline (WP:BIO1E) when compared to this policy (WP:BLP1E). Firstly, WP:BLP1E should be applied only to biographies of living people. Secondly, WP:BLP1E should be applied only to biographies of low-profile individuals.
In addition, some subject specific notability guidelines such as Wikipedia:Notability (sports) provide criteria that may support the notability of certain individuals who are known chiefly for one event.
This event still does not to appear to be significant other than to the people involved. I'd change my view if this case affected the law, international relations, prison reform... something that makes it other than a (sadly) routine rape and murder. In other words, how do we distinguish between this rape and murder and tens of thousands of others? Rklawton (talk) 13:24, 13 June 2018 (UTC)Reply
The murder of Nichola Furlong is highly notable in Ireland, there is even a memorial monument to her. It is firstly notable because James Blackston continues to collaborate with famous artists and Richard Hinds was famous in his local church community for his piano playing and two because of the light sentencing which is considered outrageous to Irish people. Whether or not Americans consider it notable is not relevant.
While it seems that you consider Irish people's outrage at this murder to be "racist" and you consider it embarrassing to mention that both perpetrators are African-Americans (which is noted in several reliable sources cited in this article, and is relevant because of Hinds' support in the form of donations through the #inrichwebelieve hashtag from his local African-American churches) neither of these are reasons to delete this article. Considering the USAs long history of discrimination against Irish people I think you should consider your own bias in whether or not Irish issues or the murder of Irish people are notable by your American standards. Multiple Irish IPs, all suspected to be the same editor, have been (for nearly a year) persistently changing the nationality of the perpetrators in this article from "American" to the ethnicity "African-American". In the context of this article, the ethnicity or skin color of the perpetrators is irrelevant and unnecessary to an understanding of the subject. If a reader is intent on knowing whether the perpetrators were white or black, they can read the cited sources. The article was semi-protected in March 2015 to prevent this disruptive editing (and may yet need to be again). DwpaulTalk 19:09, 24 April 2015 (UTC)Reply
Racist Irish outrage might be worth reporting herein. As it stands, I think this article's entire purpose is to highlight the rape of a white Irish woman by a black man. Otherwise, this article is entirely (sadly) not at all notable. Rklawton (talk) 13:27, 13 June 2018 (UTC)Reply
