BA in Home Econ

I think Chan got her BA in Home Economics at The Hong Kong Institute of Education, but the cited source says she got her degree at Western's Brescia University College. Either way, she didn't get her BA in Home Economics at the University of Western Ontario...--Ivy ST 07:09, 11 November 2006 (UTC)

Re: the removal of "Handling of the SARS outbreak (Legislative Council of Hong Kong report)" section

First of all, I would like to thank the admin Nishkid64 for taking an interest in the article about Dr Margaret Chan even the effect of User: Nishkid64's action was to delete the whole section I spent a lot of time in creating.

I would like to make a note that the tone in the comments accompanying Nishkid64's action do seems harsh, "The whole section on the SARS response was taken from government source. Don't copy word-for-word, but summarize what happened!"

First, I wish to, for the record, make a distinction between, "taken from government source" and "quoting and referencing legislative council sources". "taken" seems to imply simple copying without proper reference nor thought in the action of inserting the text. I am, of course, in very much disagreement of the implications.

The reason for the original intend of the direct quoted reference was to avoid any potential appearance of whether the "summary" was fair compare to the original report text. Upon further reflection, I have somewhat rewritten the section and hope this will read better.

Again, I appreciate the comment by User: Nishkid64 even though the comment attached to the text removal seems a bit harsh. Well, we are all learning, I suppose.

Harsh? I used an exclamation mark at the end of my comment just in case you decided to add it back. My only complaint was the way the whole section was written; it had appeared that the section was a direct read from those legislative council sources. I totally think the section was appropriate, and I appreciate your work, and I apologize for failing to leave a note on your talk page regarding my reasons for removing that section from the article. Currently, I would like to see that section written in encyclopedic form. In this particular section, I would like it if you could summarize in your own words, using the sources as references for your additions to the page. Some things stick out like, "In addition, Dr CHAN..." CHAN? Couldn't you just summarize what the assessment had established? I'll try to make some corrections, as well. Thanks for your new message. I made some new changes and new summaries. See what you think. Again, it is truly a balance of quotes and my "summary". I don't make it a habit of critizing someone on the news and holding an important role very lightly. But it is a very important matter and that is why I want to make it very careful not to misrepresent or misquote anything.

I would love to have your input on making this entry better. Glad to hear you think this is also very important information, considering many of the information referenced were in Chinese articles which is not that useful for non-Chinese readers.

By the way, it was that "!" that you used at the end of your comment which made it "harsh". I say, positive stuff it is ok for "!". Negative stuff like taking out a whole section, ahhh, may be avoid the "!". Although I understand it is tough to be an admin. (smile) And I also know not to add the text right back without any work.

The current version still reads a bit too long and verbatim to me. Can we condense the reactions to her record during the SARS outbreak even more? A general assessment should be good enough for this section, and individual remarks can serve as references to the main text -- definitely no need to paraphrase so many individuals' voices here. Canadian

The claim in the lead that she is "Hong Kong-Canadian" is not supported by the source cited. The source says she is from the People's Republic of China. Studying for a few years in country X does not automatically make one X-ian. If she is referred to as Canadian in reliable sources, it would be good to add it into the article. --PalaceGuard008 (Talk) 16:23, 17 May 2017 (UTC)

That source also doesn't say that she is Canadian - it says that she studied in Canada for a few years and then returned to Hong Kong. That's not the same as being identified as "Canadian". --PalaceGuard008 (Talk) 09:03, 18 May 2017 (UTC)

From the relevant passage of that source, I quote:

“ Upon her elevation to the WHO, her identity as the first Chinese national to hold such a prominent position on a UN body was widely cited internationally, although her Canadian citizenship was not. She has defended her right to dual citizenship, but is also believed to hold an SAR passport. ”

Neutral Point of View dispute for the section titled "Director of Health in Hong Kong, 1994–2003" and for the section titled "Director-General of WHO, 2006–2017"

NPOV dispute over section titled "Director of Health in Hong Kong, 1994–2003"

This section has a lot of newspaper sources used as references and the content appears written in a very sensationalist manner perhaps reflecting the newspaper sources' writing, the content appears like it is from very sensationalized newspaper stories from the time it happened, this section really needs more sober reliable sources to verify claims here made by those newspaper stories; it has been years since this time so sources other than newspaper stories are available now.

This section has sensationalized sounding content typical of newspaper media that is being used as sources here and the content makes accusations that she was criticized but does not say who or what organizations in particular did the accusations. Like the previous section mentioned this section also needs more sober reliable sources to verify claims here and like the section above it has been years since this time so sources other than newspaper stories are available.

In fact the sources do cite the organizations accusing Chan, and news like AFP and Politico are not tabloids and are not sensational While more recent sources would be appreciated, a lack of them does not automatically create an NPOV problem.
