Although it was the first source I consulted, I have attributed nothing to the Los Angeles Times obituary

because it includes nothing that is not in the NYT obituary.

Much of the information without specific references is provided by all three credited sources ref name=nyt, ref name=psu, ref name=childlit . Sometimes I have referenced her NYT obituary (ref name=nyt) for such a point, regardless where I read it first, but I have generally tried to reference each of those three sources precisely where it provides distinct information. Awards data

The NYT obituary credits Karl's edited books with eight Edgar Awards. I know nothing else but what I have said in the database reference, which will be easy for someone to pursue further:

The Edgars Database reports 12 award winners with   publisher/producer name = Atheneum, 1976 to 1998. The four earliest were 1976 to 1985 in the "Best Juvenile" category. The others, published while Karl was editor-at-large in retirement, include five in the Best Juvenile category and one Best Young Adult (category established 1989).

I have confirmed every specific award listed in this article by reference only to our articles on the author (NYT provides at least that much), the book, and the award. Every listing is prefixed with a hidden comment that gives the publication/award years. Eg, for The Farthest Shore, published 1972 and recognized 1973 by the National Book Award:

R W Munson pseudonym

Google R W Munson hits daylilies and more daylilies.

Consulting the Library of Congress Online Catalog, I find

[a] no author "R W Munson" except the daylilies expert R. W. Munson, Jr.[1]

[b] no mysterious mysteries by Jean Karl.[2]

I agree - there's no indication that she wrote as R.W. Munson, and no indication of a science fiction author by that name that I can find. None of of the biographies available - online, or print ones that I have access to - include information about a Munson pseudonym.

Actually, an update - I checked the original version of the obit as it appeared in the print NY times (through access to the historical version available through my library) and it does include that statement. I can't, however, link to that version because it's behind a ProQuest paywall. I was going to take out the statement from the article, but now there are two obits, from the same source, that contradict each other.

Hi. Do you mean that two versions of the NYT obituary are inconsistent? The html version now linked to the article does say, "Ms. Karl, who continued to edit books until recently, also wrote extensively, including nonfiction, fiction and science-fiction novels, mostly for children, under her own name, and other science fiction as R. W. Munson (her grandmother's name)." My concern has been that that is the only source *and* the LC catalog does not confirm it. --P64 (talk) 14:58, 13 June 2012 (UTC)

Jean Karl Books

Dating from her retirement, Jean Karl Books is either one imprint within Atheneum, now within Simon & Schuster, or another name for Atheneum Books for Young Readers. Our sources don't make this clear to me and we have no information on Jean Karl Books; no listing for that imprint at Simon & Schuster#Imprints.

At Talk: The View from Saturday I have noted that publisher Simon & Schuster and retailer Amazon currently list different paper editions "Atheneum Books for Young Readers" and "Jean Karl Books" respectively. Another Newbery medalist

This is cross-posted from Talk: The View from Saturday#Publisher and editor.

• From references at Jean E. Karl we know: Jean Karl received E.L. Konigsburg's first two manuscripts together in 1966/1967. She continued with Atheneum as freelance editor after her retirement. She died 2000. Konigsburg called her "my forever editor".
• From ref name=transcript (no date) at E. L. Konigsburg we know: Konigsburg said "I've had the same editor always" subsequent to The View from Saturday (1996).

So we know that Karl edited Saturday —at least her sixth Newbery Medalist because her obituary lists five others. But wikipedia asks that we not "put two and two together" as editors —that is banned original research— so I say it only here and at Talk: Jean E. Karl#Saturday editor. —(interjection 2012-01-05) date evidently between 1996 month?? publication of her The View From Saturday and 2000 March 30 death of her "forever editor" Jean E. Karl.

These two exchanges quoted from the interview directly concern E. L. Konigsburg's work with Jean Karl. —we infer, relying on the veracity of the interview and the Karl obituaries.

How would you describe your writing style?

I can't judge that. I didn't even know I had a style! E. B. White, in his book Elements of Style, says the thing to do is not affect a style. I didn't even know I had one until I wrote Father's Arcane Daughter, and my editor said that this book was so different that she wished we could put it out under a pseudonym. But she said that my style was so distinct that people would recognize me! And until then, I had no idea I had a style! So it's really not for me to judge.

How do you go about revising your writing?

My editor - I've had the same editor always - sends me some suggestions. I have had two books go directly from manuscript to typescript, which is like getting an A+ on a paper. My editor makes suggestions, and I read them all and work with them. Neither she nor I approves of someone going in to tweak the story. We agree that you should read the comments over the whole story, and then decide what you are going to churn up. You don't change little bits at a time.
