Harrington (Church Road Halt) railway station → Harrington railway station (Cleator and Workington Junction Railway) – Per the consensus at this RfC, the iidiosyncratic mid-phrase disambiguation formerly used in some British railway station titles has been deprecated. The relevant guideline WP:UKSTATION would support this move. I made the move before, but it was reverted with the statement that "the last official name should be used for closed stations". I see no evidence that "Harrington (Church Road Halt) railway station" was ever a common name for this station. If there's a better name than Harrington railway station, it should be used instead, but it should follow the standard dab conventions. • Oppose - the relevant guideline WP:UKSTATION#Official names would not support this move, it says The official name of the station should normally be used ... The last official name should be used for closed stations. Butt (1995) page 114 shows that a station named Harrington Church Road Halt was officially closed on 1 April 1929. It deprecates the mid-phrase disambiguation only where we have invented the disambiguator. If the disambiguator is (or was) part of the actual station name, we don't artificially move it to the end. Thus, we should not have either "Harrington railway station (Church Road Halt)" or "Harrington railway station Church Road Halt" any more than we should have "Birmingham railway station New Street". --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 21:37, 20 December 2018 (UTC)

The UKSTATION format is "[NAME] railway station", followed by disambiguation if necessary: (Country), (Country/Local government), (Railway), etc. The disambiguation would not be (Church Road Halt). If the name of the station were really "Harrington (Church Road Halt)" that would be one thing, but we've seen no evidence that that's the common name. It shows up in different sources as "Harrington Church Road Halt",[1][2] "Harrington (Church Road) Halt", or simply "Church Road Halt". I'm not seeing a source that renders it the way presented here. IMO "Harrington Church Road Halt railway station" is our best bet, or using the proposed title.--Cúchullain ^t/c 15:43, 21 December 2018 (UTC)

• Oppose. The current title is not ideal, but "Harrington railway station (Cleator and Workington Junction Railway)" is a ridiculously long title which manages to repeat the word "railway".

Sometimes a naming formula works well in most cases, but breaks in some instances. This is one of those cases.

BrownHairedGirl: I started including the full names of the railroad company at the suggestion of Amakuru, who has corrected many of these articles the same way. Another option would be to use the abbreviation of the railroad. The bottom line is that the present title is not viable by either the guideline or Wikipedia's standard naming conventions, and needs to change.--Cúchullain ^t/c 13:45, 2 January 2019 (UTC)

@Cuchullain: as above, the application of the formula to this station produces a silly name. Naming conventions are guidelines, not policy. The policy at WP:AT includes principles such as recognisability and naturalness conciseness, which discourage things like "railway railway" but would commend something like Harrington Church Road railway station. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 14:16, 2 January 2019 (UTC)

There's no problem with the name, by either by AT or common sense, but Harrington Church Road Halt railway station avoids the issue entirely.--Cúchullain ^t/c 14:18, 2 January 2019 (UTC)

• Support. The RFC determined the format for these, and although it was silent on the issue of how to title pages that are disambiguated by railway line, it was very clear that having a disambiguator in the middle of the name is deprecated. If it could be proven that the station name really did include the current title, including the brackets, in all locations including platform signs, then perhaps that might be OK, but I am not seeing any tangible evidence of that above. Alternatively, as Cuchullain says, if it can be shown that Harrington Church Road Halt railway station is an actually-used name for the station, then I would be OK with that too.  — Amakuru (talk) 20:25, 2 January 2019 (UTC)
