Craving a spear

edit

Amy Young (whom I just added as a source) writes on page 168 that "Guy [Blaikie] was [known when young within the family as] Mkonto because as a little boy he used to beg their Zulu cook to give him an assegai (spear), the man knew it was far too dangerous a weapon for a small child, so Guy received the name only and never got the object that he so wanted".

Amy Young's book is already shewn as a source for this wiki entry, but I think she ran short of time towards the end, and simply off-loaded a lot of stuff into appendices at the end of her book rather than either (1) losing it or (2) weaving it into the main narrative. So ... I still don't know the significance of the name Mkonto, but if I knew the relevant language I probably would. In any case, I'm not sure how encyclopaedic this stuff is. But it gives a flavour of the little chap whose father would die a war hero and whose own adult career as an effective cricketer argues for a competitive streak.
