Name

Still, 95 % of fighting occurs in Gaza, like in the 2006 Israel-Gaza conflict. I suggest returning the previous name.

Well, the name of the entire broad conflict is the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and of course not all Palestinians have fought in any war with Israel. Also, the arrests in the West Bank have totaled around what the total kills in Gaza have been. Hello32020 02:11, 28 May 2007 (UTC)

When the arrests were made, they were put in the same article as the fighting in Gaza, in the Reuters article seen here. [2] The shootout south of Jerusalem was also put into the same article. 2007 Israel-Hamas conflict might be a better name, but then you have to address why Islamic Jihad and Popular Resistance Committees aren't in the title. Putting them in the same article doesn't necessarily mean they think that there is a connection greater than the overarching Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Try to find a few mainstream news sources that consistently relate the two as part of one campaign, otherwise Cerejota's conclusion is probably very true. Are there any sources saying this is a conflict between Israel and a sub-set of the Palestinians? There has been mentions of Fatah not fighting now, and Ftah has a hell of a lot of Palestinians as followers. Might point is that if this Fatah non-involvement is sourced then a better title might be 2007 Israeli-Palestinian factions conflict... If not such difference is made, then the title as of today holds: Hamas controls the PNA and hence are "official" Palestinians from the perspective of State-State conflict.--Cerejota 06:29, 3 June 2007 (UTC)

Cleanup

• I'm currently in the process of performing some tidying. I'm not too sure about the following:

  The airstrikes may have been chosen because Hamas has very little AA weapons to defend themselves ...

  I'm assuming that AA is an acronym for 'Anti-Air', but I'm not quite sure. No prior references are made in the article, and as far as I know, it isn't common knowledge to the average reader. We should probably reword and hotlink to the appropriate article, but I may be wrong about the intended meaning, so I'll leave it for the original author to sort out. • I'm noticing some subtle POV issues, as well as some attribution issues (the two are related in this case). I've encountered several instances of "Israel says" and "Palestinians say" -- Unfortunately Israel doesn't talk, so specificity is required. Palestinians are capable of talking, but again, specificity is key. I'm also noticing a slight POV in this area -- namely, a skepticism in the wording; if at all possible, I'd like to stick to established facts -- if 'Palestinian medics' make a statement that's worth including in the article, then it should be included with a citation, rather than an ethnic/political qualifier. Naming

The name "Israel-Gaza" conflict confuses me. Israel is a nation-state and Gaza is a geographical / subnational entity. I have the same issue with 2004 Israel-Gaza conflict and 2006 Israel-Gaza conflict. I'm not sure exactly what the best alternative is. Actually, the difficulty of naming might be because these articles are more like sections of an ongoing timeline than articles about specific well-defined incidents. Any thoughts? Merge Page

Since this discussion has been going on since last year (he-he), and based on Jaakobou's (should have replied in mine, I didn't get to it till now :D) suggestion in his talk page, I am creating a merge proposal sub-page here at the talk page Talk:2007–2008 Israel–Gaza conflict/merger-proposal. The idea is to reach a rough consensus on the merge, determine sub articles needed and all that boring crap ;). This way we move forward. Thanks! --Cerejota (talk) 09:56, 12 January 2009 (UTC)

Some points after looking at it:

• We need an intro, bad.
• There is a need for a narrative, as it stands it is really a collection of events.
• We have to think of it as an index to sub-pages, even if there is not enough content and the content stays. For example Operation Hot Winter, the content should mostly go into that page, the air strikes probably would need that, etc.
• We need to have an eyes for the connecting narratives, like 2006 Israel–Gaza conflict etc.
• If we have differences that cannot be resolved, lets stick to the pre-merge language/narrative - and continue the conversation with the article merged. Since we are merging articles that have been more or less the same for a while, I think we can assume it as a rough consensus and move on: the merger of a so-so article is way better than no merger, I think.

I will start doing edits to this end, feel free to comment, and edit, but lets try to not edit war ;) (I mean its not the main article, its the proposal).--Cerejota (talk) 10:26, 12 January 2009 (UTC)

Technical move

I moved from 2007–2008 Israel–Gaza conflict to 2007–2008 Israel-Gaza conflict, they look the same, but the "Israel-Gaza" hyphen are encoded differently. If you use a Hebrew or other language keyboard, please remember this is English Wikipedia. It break linking to this article, a possible reason for the unnecessary forking we have. Cerejota - it seems to me that the Wikipedia:Manual_of_Style#En_dashes recommends the en-dash (UTF8 0x2013) both for a range of dates and for e.g. the "versus" sense:

• "or marking a relationship involving independent elements in certain compound expressions (Canada–US border, blood–brain barrier, time–altitude graph, 4–3 win in the opening game, male–female ratio, 3–2 majority verdict, Lincoln–Douglas debate, diode–transistor logic"

while the exception

• "but a hyphen is used in Sino-Japanese trade, in which Sino-, being a prefix, lacks lexical independence."

does not seem to apply unless we have something like "Israelo-Gaza conflict". So in fact, 2007–2008 Israel–Gaza conflict seems to be correct according to Wikipedia:Manual_of_Style#En_dashes. i admit that personally i'm not terribly fussy about the difference between hyphens, en-dashes, em-dashes or even figure dashes, and in practice i expect that most people will use hyphens. On the other hand, you have retained the en-dash in 2007–2008, so i think that in that case we might as well go all the way to following wikipedia style recommendations. This section is 80kb and IMO needs to be split into an article - dunno what we could call the new page, maybe something along the lines of "Timeline of the 2007–2008 Israel-Gaza conflict" at a guess. I don't oppose it in principle (one would have to be crazy to, if WP:SUMMARY exists, its for this very purpose ;-) however, lets merge the articles first? I am saying because the timeline needs to be modified a little, plus I have some other proposals around it to make it shorter and more workable, as it stands is not really useful. User:BobaFett85 tried to merge and delete 2008 Israel–Gaza conflict. He gave no warning, and did not have consensus on that talk page, or on this talk page here either. He did not reply to my comments on either talk page before doing this.

Please note the previous talk section where I point out the large amount of material in various articles, including new material, that could be summarized and added to 2008 Israel–Gaza conflict. So that article needs to remain a separate article.

I suggest making this article here strictly for 2007. We can change the name to 2007 Israel–Gaza conflict

This would fill in the years better. We could use a 2005 article.

Since this is the most relevant article and there is some activity, here's what I'm proposing. Tell me if there are any big problems before I proceed.

The problem with this "2007-08 conflict" article is that it pictures three separate events of the Gaza-Israel conflict (2008 breach of the Gaza–Egypt border, Operation Hot Winter and the 2008 Israel-Hamas ceasefire), as if they were some kind of one conflict/operation. It seems to me this article is a fringe "survivor" from the period when it was popular to create articles for each year of conflict. Evidently, somebody decided to change the name of this article from original "2006 Gaza-Israel conflict" [5] to "2007 Gaza-Israel conflict" [6], and eventually add 2008 events, including the Gaza War to make it "2007-08 Gaza-Israel conflict". It seems now like a completely useless collection of data on the Gaza-Israel conflict, with articles already existing on notable events through this period (2008 breach of the Gaza–Egypt border, Operation Hot Winter, 2008 Israel-Hamas ceasefire). Since this article is a summary of several events on Gaza-Israel conflict, it should be a redirect and extra material merged if relevant.Greyshark09 (talk) 11:51, 28 April 2013 (UTC)

Political manipulation of information

In the beginning of the article, it had been written that:

" This conflict is seen by many humanitarian organizations and world's peace activists as "Israel’s Genocidal War on Palestine". "

I added the following sentence and references after this:

" The latter proclamation of 'Genocide' is not supported by the number of casualties in he conflict (numbering few thousands over several years), and is also controversial due to Hamas' wide-spread use of civilians as human shields, which had been a major contributing factor to the number of innocents killed in the conflict. "

Within two hours, my addition was deleted without proper justification or addressing the solid sources I have brought forth. The user who reverted my addition wrote that: "human shielding was a very strong accusation", ignoring the content of the five sources and the fact that "genocide" is also a very strong accusation! I protest at this politically inclined silencing and deletion of content. I believe my edit should be restored.

2006

Together with 2008, 2012 and 2014, this year was critical in the complex interplay between Gaza in general, Fatah, Hamas and Israel. But the sub-section contains no discernable timeline; instead it is currently made up of salami slices for which no through-going (if existent) interconnection and contextual relation is displayed. There is no identification of a particular period of conflict, and no chain-of-events data to evaluate that as a whole.

Given the above, as a relative newcomer I post a pair of questions: Is it worthwhile to rewrite this sub-article, or does "Israel-Gaza Conflict - the 2006 timeline" deserve an article on its own so as to manage "length"? Erictheenquirer (talk) 14:53, 27 July 2014 (UTC)

There really needs to be more focus given to the 2014 war. I know it just ended at the end of August but there are very long sections on the other war/events while only a paragraph on the 2014 war. Lead critique

Parts of the Lead contain unsupported attributes such as 'some', 'decreased', 'not fully' and 'not completely', together with text unsupported by the citation such as 'Hamas hoped' and 'Israel hoped'. It does not mention the ceasefire obligations. It needs to contain hard data in support. I am suggesting that the sub-section "2008 Hamas-Israeli ceasefire" from Gaza–Israel conflict is far more informative and better supported, and should therefore be substituted here. Manipulation of International response

International response section starts with Ban Ki-Moon condemnation of the Qassam missiles element of the Palestinian resistance in Gaza, but does not quote him for also justifying it: "As oppressed peoples have demonstrated throughout the ages, it is human nature to react to occupation." http://www.haaretz.com/middle-east-news/1.699686

2018 Border Protest

On the 8th of April I added a section on the current protests and fatalities. I used (2) pro-Palestinian stories and a single pro-Israeli story with three short sentences. The Al Jazeera story carried the photo of the slain Palestinian photographer and the likely ICC investigation. The Al Jazeera story mentioned the illegality of the military use of civilian cover which is important in any militarized border as well as the use of excessive force by a militarily superior force. The second Al Jazeera story critiqued the Hebrew language press. The Jerusalem Post story provided some depth and analysis in contrast, but was not developed in text of my edit. The three sentences were removed in favor of a single first day Al Jazeera story.

The current and developing news stories need some perspective and analysis. The editor who removed my three sentences in favor of a single sentence from a first day story lacks the updated facts of mortality and injuries as well as perspective and analysis after additional information is available. The edits have not improved the section and have not demonstrated a balanced view. The facts in regard to mortality are a good place to start. The most current figure from the Jerusalem Post is (32) fatalities. See http://www.jpost.com/Arab-Israeli-Conflict/Report-80-percent-of-Palestinians-killed-in-Gaza-border-crisis-were-terrorists-549511 .This story notes the alleged terrorist affiliations of the slain. Merge this article?

I can’t see any sources, either in this article, or outside, which describe a Gaza-Israel conflict between 2006 and today. All others contextualise it more broadly (e.g. tit-for-tat rockets and incursions had been ongoing ever since the Second Intifada) or more narrowly (the various operations for which we already have articles.

This seems to be WP:OR designed to fit the narrative that “Israel left Gaza and Gaza immediately started attacking it”.[7]

Rocket fire from gaza 2005-8 is not OR and is a well covered topic, often tied to 2009, 2012, and 2014. Aren't you being a little obtuse now? Orgs are listed if they are involved in the conflict in a non-civilian capacity. It's like asking the question "Can the opposing side kill them without feeling bad?" if you will. Yes, had the Israeli border police been deployed outside Gaza we would have listed them as they are routinely involved in violence against Palestinians [8]. ... In response, on October 8th, the government of Israel declared war on Hamas [1]. This was followed by their announcement of a “total” blockade of the Gaza Strip including a ban on food, water, electricity, fuel, supplies, and international humanitarian aid [2][3][4]. I removed from the lead "The Gaza–Israel conflict is a localized part of the Israeli–Palestinian conflict. The conflict originated with the Israeli withdrawal from Gaza in 2005." That is unsourced, and patently untrue. Gaza-Israel conflict has been raging for a while. For example, Rachel Corrie was notable killed in 2003 after being crushed by Israeli bulldozers destroying Gaza homes. Further back, Gaza Strip played a major role in the First Initfada (1980s). Even further back, Israel conducted the Rafah massacre in 1956. Clearly, this has been going a while.VR _talk 05:22, 11 December 2023 (UTC)

NPOV dispute-2012 Events

Trying to "control" info written regarding Israel's illegal actions is in itself bias and not promotion of peace, as writers of such content want the public to believe.

Content in the majority of Wiki's info is missing the vital information that Palestinians and other Arabs want a peaceful resolution. The content is also missing the vital info regarding Arab spring, who are asking for democracy and to live in peace.

Hateful content against the Palestinians is such:

• pointing to info that is outdated, while new info regarding peaceful content is not given

• pointing to info regarding the rare occurrences of suicide bombings, while blatantly dismissing info that the MAJORITY of Palestinians are participating in peaceful protests, along with their supporters.

• pointing to books and hateful speeches regarding anti-Semite is a promotion of hate toward Palestinians. These rare speeches are not what the majority of Palestinians and Arabs believe in.

• Also, info regarding Israeli individuals that are refusing to serve in the Israeli military due to its violent behavior toward Palestinians is also missing.

Pro-Israeli individuals and organizations that are stating in public they want peace with their neighbors, yet are writing content against Palestinians is the promotion of hate and violence. They are also agreeing with the MASS KILLINGS of Palestinians. Please note that this is hatred and violent behavior. The mass population is now seeing this and will not tolerate it.

The phrasing "The conflict originated with the Israeli withdrawal from Gaza in 2005" is misleading since it is well known that the conflict has origins at least since 1948. After all, 70% of the population of Gaza are refugees from Israel well before 2005.

I propose we change it along with the following sentence to:

Following the Israeli withdrawal from Gaza in 2005, Hamas won the 2006 Palestinian legislative election. A civil war between Hamas and Fatah in 2007 culminated in Hamas gaining control over Gaza.

I removed the infobox for a few reasons:

• The biggest reason was it gave WP:UNDUE weight to a long list of salafists, who are essentially irrelevant in most of Israel-Gaza conflict. It gave more space to salafists than to Hamas or Israel!
• Not much is added by it. The casualty figures are best tabulated, as in the table I've added in the "Overview" section. They were out of date anyway
• It would need to be unnecessarily long. The list of Israeli PMs alone (let alone defense ministers and IDF chiefs) that have presided over conflicts against Gaza is very long. To say nothing of the leaders of every Palestinian faction that has fought against Israel from Gaza. Most of that would again be WP:UNDUE for the lead.

It is misleading and false. Many,(and mostly) Israeli civilians were killed.

Palestinians committed hundreds of terror attacks against civilians inside the Israeli territories.

Again, this is misleading, creating a narrower point of view, shaping one's thought to side with the palestinians as if they are the only victim. Biased content. This linked revision which re-added a claim that the Oct 7th counter attack killed "mostly women and children" has no support in the given citation.
