0.5 killed?

Whats up with that? Have the Israelies discovered a way to sepearate their soldiers so that they can increase their numbers? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 79.68.17.198 (talk) 11:49, 3 March 2008 (UTC)

forced

NPOV anyone? Oh, I forget, this is about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, where all pages should have a permanent {{NPOV}} tag!--Cerejota 01:07, 18 May 2007 (UTC)

{{Arab-Israeli Conflict}}

I removed {{Arab-Israeli Conflict}} but it should be there. However the other nav template won't play nicely for unknown reasons (I tried a bunch of stuff!!!). If someone can take a look at that other template and fix it it would rule!--Cerejota 01:43, 18 May 2007 (UTC)

Map for this article

I believe there should be a map for this article. I may try to make one, but if I don't happen to someone might want to do it. Hello32020 19:17, 21 May 2007 (UTC)

done quickly :) --TheFEARgod (Ч) 20:47, 22 May 2007 (UTC)

Name

Still, 95 % of fighting occurs in Gaza, like in the 2006 Israel-Gaza conflict. I suggest returning the previous name.

Also - not all Palestinians are fighting, like Fatah for example --TheFEARgod (Ч) 00:26, 28 May 2007 (UTC)

Well, the name of the entire broad conflict is the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and of course not all Palestinians have fought in any war with Israel. Also, the arrests in the West Bank have totaled around what the total kills in Gaza have been. Hello32020 02:11, 28 May 2007 (UTC)

Are media and other independent sources saying that the operations in the Gaza Strip are part of the same conflict as those in the West Bank? TewfikTalk 04:23, 28 May 2007 (UTC)

That is a great question. If we don't find that then we are in deep WP:OR crapola! I really don't care otherwise, its all the same killing and dying, just a different year.--Cerejota 09:23, 28 May 2007 (UTC)
When the arrests were made, they were put in the same article as the fighting in Gaza, in the Reuters article seen here. [2] The shootout south of Jerusalem was also put into the same article. 2007 Israel-Hamas conflict might be a better name, but then you have to address why Islamic Jihad and Popular Resistance Committees aren't in the title. Hello32020 11:47, 28 May 2007 (UTC)
I bet then that other Gaza-Israel conflicts (2004, 2006) had events in the Gaza Strip --TheFEARgod (Ч) 14:39, 28 May 2007 (UTC)
Putting them in the same article doesn't necessarily mean they think that there is a connection greater than the overarching Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Try to find a few mainstream news sources that consistently relate the two as part of one campaign, otherwise Cerejota's conclusion is probably very true. Either way, I support returning to the previous name per TheFEARgod's logic. Cheers, TewfikTalk 04:29, 1 June 2007 (UTC)
Are there any sources saying this is a conflict between Israel and a sub-set of the Palestinians? There has been mentions of Fatah not fighting now, and Ftah has a hell of a lot of Palestinians as followers. Might point is that if this Fatah non-involvement is sourced then a better title might be 2007 Israeli-Palestinian factions conflict... If not such difference is made, then the title as of today holds: Hamas controls the PNA and hence are "official" Palestinians from the perspective of State-State conflict.--Cerejota 06:29, 3 June 2007 (UTC)
I want to see it back to Israel-Gaza conflict as it's name is geographic, not featuring combatants. And 99% fighting is in or around Gaza. --TheFEARgod (Ч) 22:47, 3 June 2007 (UTC)

I again want to make clear that I agree with you. The information about the West Bank should probably be moved to the "2007" entry, which I think works with Cerejota's suggestion. Someone should get WP:Bold... TewfikTalk 21:04, 4 June 2007 (UTC)

Cleanup

  • I'm currently in the process of performing some tidying. I'm not too sure about the following:

The airstrikes may have been chosen because Hamas has very little AA weapons to defend themselves ...

I'm assuming that AA is an acronym for 'Anti-Air', but I'm not quite sure. No prior references are made in the article, and as far as I know, it isn't common knowledge to the average reader. We should probably reword and hotlink to the appropriate article, but I may be wrong about the intended meaning, so I'll leave it for the original author to sort out. Cheers. -Etafly 13:35, 28 May 2007 (UTC)
  • I'm noticing some subtle POV issues, as well as some attribution issues (the two are related in this case). I've encountered several instances of "Israel says" and "Palestinians say" -- Unfortunately Israel doesn't talk, so specificity is required. Palestinians are capable of talking, but again, specificity is key. I'm also noticing a slight POV in this area -- namely, a skepticism in the wording; if at all possible, I'd like to stick to established facts -- if 'Palestinian medics' make a statement that's worth including in the article, then it should be included with a citation, rather than an ethnic/political qualifier. I believe I was successful in NPOVing the Prelude section, at the very least. -Etafly 14:00, 28 May 2007 (UTC)
  • Again, regarding POV, when describing Palestinian casualties, please refrain from quantifiers such as "a few", as it's highly POV (it downplays their significance.) -Etafly 18:55, 2 June 2007 (UTC)

Merge

I think than rather than a full merge, we could move all timelines from both into Timeline of the 2007 Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and redirect 'Violence here. I think this is better for size and quality reasons. This is done in a bazillion other articles.--Cerejota 06:29, 3 June 2007 (UTC)

agree, go ahead. --TheFEARgod (Ч) 10:57, 10 June 2007 (UTC)
Please note the existence of several articles in a "series":
I have no strong opinion on how to deal with them, other than that they should be dealt with together (and, preferably, not deleted). --Eliyak T·C 00:36, 19 June 2007 (UTC)
Back to the old question - do RS talk about a "2007 Israeli-Palestinian conflict", or just the "Israeli-Palestinian conflict" in 2007? If the latter, then we may as well conduct a full merge. TewfikTalk 04:29, 19 June 2007 (UTC)
Disagree, this is and has been direct conflict between these two hating sides, west bank and israel have their problems, but gaza and israel, wow, it's totally out of line...
  • I agree with the opposition, but I think the incidents covered in this Article should also be in the Standard Israeli-Palestianian conflict series and vica versa. Ideally, the more general series would note violence in Gaza vs. violence in the West Bank. It would be nice if Wiki had an underlying database, all these timelines could just be Views of an underlying data structure. This would be similar to the Iraqi Bodycount Web site.ITBlair (talk) 15:59, 12 May 2008 (UTC)

I see the following Wiki Articles dealing with Israel-Gaza conflict separately. I added them into the See Also section. We could build them into a a related series of articles.

We should consider integrating these articles a little bit better and probably also X-ref to the Second Intafada articles and Hamas articles. Also, we are missing a 2005 Israel-Gaza conflict article. Finally, we might want to take the 2008 portions of this article and put them in the 2008 article (i.e., this article should be the 2007 Israel-Gaza conflict). ITBlair (talk) 05:56, 13 May 2008 (UTC)

Naming

The name "Israel-Gaza" conflict confuses me. Israel is a nation-state and Gaza is a geographical / subnational entity. I have the same issue with 2004 Israel-Gaza conflict and 2006 Israel-Gaza conflict. I'm not sure exactly what the best alternative is. Actually, the difficulty of naming might be because these articles are more like sections of an ongoing timeline than articles about specific well-defined incidents. Any thoughts? I'm open for proposals :) --TheFEARgod (Ч) 13:44, 26 July 2007 (UTC)

Fair use rationale for Image:Logoprc.jpg

Image:Logoprc.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation can be deleted one week after being tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

table of contents

The table of contents is very unwieldy. I suggest having only the months in the table of contents, not each date separately. The entries are so short that no one should have trouble finding the date for which they are looking. Hraesvelgr (talk) 18:57, 27 January 2008 (UTC)

Merge Page

Since this discussion has been going on since last year (he-he), and based on Jaakobou's (should have replied in mine, I didn't get to it till now :D) suggestion in his talk page, I am creating a merge proposal sub-page here at the talk page Talk:2007–2008 Israel–Gaza conflict/merger-proposal. The idea is to reach a rough consensus on the merge, determine sub articles needed and all that boring crap ;). This way we move forward. Thanks! --Cerejota (talk) 09:56, 12 January 2009 (UTC)

Some points after looking at it:

  • We need an intro, bad.
  • There is a need for a narrative, as it stands it is really a collection of events.
  • We have to think of it as an index to sub-pages, even if there is not enough content and the content stays. For example Operation Hot Winter, the content should mostly go into that page, the air strikes probably would need that, etc.
  • We need to have an eyes for the connecting narratives, like 2006 Israel–Gaza conflict etc.
  • If we have differences that cannot be resolved, lets stick to the pre-merge language/narrative - and continue the conversation with the article merged. Since we are merging articles that have been more or less the same for a while, I think we can assume it as a rough consensus and move on: the merger of a so-so article is way better than no merger, I think.

I will start doing edits to this end, feel free to comment, and edit, but lets try to not edit war ;) (I mean its not the main article, its the proposal).--Cerejota (talk) 10:26, 12 January 2009 (UTC)

Technical move

I moved from 2007–2008 Israel–Gaza conflict to 2007–2008 Israel-Gaza conflict, they look the same, but the "Israel-Gaza" hyphen are encoded differently. If you use a Hebrew or other language keyboard, please remember this is English Wikipedia. It break linking to this article, a possible reason for the unnecessary forking we have. Thanks!--Cerejota (talk) 12:07, 29 December 2008 (UTC)

Cerejota - it seems to me that the Wikipedia:Manual_of_Style#En_dashes recommends the en-dash (UTF8 0x2013) both for a range of dates and for e.g. the "versus" sense:
  • "or marking a relationship involving independent elements in certain compound expressions (Canada–US border, blood–brain barrier, time–altitude graph, 4–3 win in the opening game, male–female ratio, 3–2 majority verdict, Lincoln–Douglas debate, diode–transistor logic"
while the exception
  • "but a hyphen is used in Sino-Japanese trade, in which Sino-, being a prefix, lacks lexical independence."
does not seem to apply unless we have something like "Israelo-Gaza conflict". So in fact, 2007–2008 Israel–Gaza conflict seems to be correct according to Wikipedia:Manual_of_Style#En_dashes. i admit that personally i'm not terribly fussy about the difference between hyphens, en-dashes, em-dashes or even figure dashes, and in practice i expect that most people will use hyphens. On the other hand, you have retained the en-dash in 2007–2008, so i think that in that case we might as well go all the way to following wikipedia style recommendations. Boud (talk) 17:07, 31 December 2008 (UTC)

Timeline section - split?

This section is 80kb and IMO needs to be split into an article - dunno what we could call the new page, maybe something along the lines of "Timeline of the 2007–2008 Israel-Gaza conflict" at a guess. In it's place, we can keep a timeline section in this article, but only have it about 30kb with actual prose in there instead of bullet points. Thoughts? D.M.N. (talk) 17:55, 2 January 2009 (UTC)

I don't oppose it in principle (one would have to be crazy to, if WP:SUMMARY exists, its for this very purpose ;-) however, lets merge the articles first? I am saying because the timeline needs to be modified a little, plus I have some other proposals around it to make it shorter and more workable, as it stands is not really useful. Thanks!--Cerejota (talk) 10:14, 12 January 2009 (UTC)

There is no movement here

What about we, erm, talk? Thanks!--Cerejota (talk) 23:36, 18 January 2009 (UTC)

Now that the (first phase of the) war is over, I hope we can get begin to get scholarly material in to replace the futile, immensely tendentious op-eds, and newspaper narratives that have been used to reconstruct the background. One has just appeared, is highly interpretative, but from a scholar in the area. I suggest we read, and harvest, John J. 2008 material for 2008 Israel–Gaza conflict

Please see:

The Timeshifter subpage contains the last revision of the article. It also contains the full history of the article. I disagree with User:Sandstein's deletion of the article, but rather than go to Wikipedia:Deletion review and fight to keep separate one-sided timelines such as these:

I think it would be easier to summarize much of the info about violent 2008 attacks from both sides, and provide a useful 2008 narrative for the lay reader here:

It would be a much-needed WP:NPOV background article for these articles:

It could incorporate 2008 info from here too:

and other articles.

No consensus to delete the 2008 article

Please see this diff: [3]

User:BobaFett85 tried to merge and delete 2008 Israel–Gaza conflict. He gave no warning, and did not have consensus on that talk page, or on this talk page here either. He did not reply to my comments on either talk page before doing this.

Please note the previous talk section where I point out the large amount of material in various articles, including new material, that could be summarized and added to 2008 Israel–Gaza conflict. So that article needs to remain a separate article.

I suggest making this article here strictly for 2007. We can change the name to 2007 Israel–Gaza conflict

This would fill in the years better. We could use a 2005 article.

See: Category:Israel-Gaza conflict

2008 Israel–Gaza conflict is the background article to 2008–2009 Israel–Gaza conflict, and so it is a very important article that needs a lot of referenced WP:NPOV info in order to be encyclopedic and fair. --Timeshifter (talk) 19:41, 26 January 2009 (UTC)

2004 Israel-Gaza conflict

The first paragraph text:

The 2004 Israel-Gaza conflict refers to the series of battles between Palestinian militants and the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). Several qassam rocket attacks on Israel (Sderot and the Negev) forced the IDF to retaliate with airstrikes and land incursions into Gaza...

ascribes cause and effect (x forced y to do z) with a selective sampling and interpretation of circumstances and events. To fix this suggest either:

The 2004 Israel-Gaza conflict refers to the series of battles between Palestinian militants and the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). Palestinian fighters launched Qassam rocket attacks on Israel and the IDF launched airstrikes and land incursions against Gaza..."

otherwise why not:

The 2004 Israel-Gaza conflict refers to the series of battles between Palestinian militants and the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). Expulsions and land disputes forced an Israeli military occupation of Gaza which forced Palestinians to resort to suicide bombings in Israel which forced Israel to respond by imposing a blockade on Gaza which forced Palestinians to retaliate by firing Qassam rockets into Israel which forced the IDF to retaliate with airstrikes and land incursions into Gaza...

I check pages listed in Category:Pages with incorrect ref formatting to try to fix reference errors. One of the things I do is look for content for orphaned references in wikilinked articles. Redirect Timeline of the Israel–Gaza conflict here?

Timeline of the Israel–Gaza conflict really is 90% a timeline of casualities. So I've put the below on the article's talk page and Israel-Palestine Collaboration Wikiproject; but gotten no response. Since this is the most relevant article and there is some activity, here's what I'm proposing. Tell me if there are any big problems before I proceed.

...probably the best thing is to create an article called Israel–Gaza conflict casualties 2006-2008 and move this content and talk page there, and then redirect Timeline of the Israel–Gaza conflict to Gaza-Israel_conflict#Timeline. Any objections, do tell soon.

>>I agree with Dvl999 comment. This is clearly a one sided article and not to mention I have seen SEVERAL one sided (pro-Israel) articles on this so called "encyclopedia" site. Not to mention wikipedia's editors, staff and owners are well aware of this racist writings against Palestinians on this site, and considering they are not doing anything about it, one would say they are in agreement, especially that it keeps happening.

I would not break a sweat over this type of one-sided site though (pro-Israel and pro-occupation and pro-mass killing of Palestinians). No wikipedia or similar racist site is winning such battle. The truth about Israel's repeated attacks on Palestinians - innocent men, women and children - is being recorded elsewhere on social media and human rights organizations.

Anyone reading this should only feel sorry for this site, as history proves racism never wins! Peace... 98.176.116.160 (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 21:41, 27 May 2013 (UTC)

Seems only you and i are into this, what is your position? should 2007-2008 article remain? are there any sources on this period as a unique operation or phase of the Gaza-Israel conflict or is it just another timeline which happened to become an article?Greyshark09 (talk) 13:32, 13 January 2013 (UTC)
The question is, what specifically would you move over there from here, or or is this just about deleting the content of this article? Is too much stuff going down the memory hole? CarolMooreDC🗽 10:15, 28 April 2013 (UTC)
The problem with this "2007-08 conflict" article is that it pictures three separate events of the Gaza-Israel conflict (2008 breach of the Gaza–Egypt border, Operation Hot Winter and the 2008 Israel-Hamas ceasefire), as if they were some kind of one conflict/operation. It seems to me this article is a fringe "survivor" from the period when it was popular to create articles for each year of conflict. Evidently, somebody decided to change the name of this article from original "2006 Gaza-Israel conflict" [5] to "2007 Gaza-Israel conflict" [6], and eventually add 2008 events, including the Gaza War to make it "2007-08 Gaza-Israel conflict". It seems now like a completely useless collection of data on the Gaza-Israel conflict, with articles already existing on notable events through this period (2008 breach of the Gaza–Egypt border, Operation Hot Winter, 2008 Israel-Hamas ceasefire). Since this article is a summary of several events on Gaza-Israel conflict, it should be a redirect and extra material merged if relevant.Greyshark09 (talk) 11:51, 28 April 2013 (UTC)
Well, at least give anyone interested a chance to think about it or make sure they notice if they come by here after the merger and want to go looking for anything important; thus created subsection to this merge to draw newbie eyes to it. I might even want to do it myself someday in some spare moment :-) CarolMooreDC🗽 16:13, 28 April 2013 (UTC)

Orphaned references in Gaza–Israel conflict

I check pages listed in Category:Pages with incorrect ref formatting to try to fix reference errors. One of the things I do is look for content for orphaned references in wikilinked articles. I have found content for some of Gaza–Israel conflict's orphans, the problem is that I found more than one version. I can't determine which (if any) is correct for this article, so I am asking for a sentient editor to look it over and copy the correct ref content into this article.

Reference named "rockmort":

I apologize if any of the above are effectively identical; I am just a simple computer program, so I can't determine whether minor differences are significant or not. AnomieBOT 16:57, 14 June 2013 (UTC)

Political manipulation of information

In the beginning of the article, it had been written that:

" This conflict is seen by many humanitarian organizations and world's peace activists as "Israel’s Genocidal War on Palestine"[1]. "

I added the following sentence and references after this:

" The latter proclamation of 'Genocide' is not supported by the number of casualties in he conflict (numbering few thousands over several years), and is also controversial due to Hamas' wide-spread use of civilians as human shields[2][3][4][5][6], which had been a major contributing factor to the number of innocents killed in the conflict. "

Within two hours, my addition was deleted without proper justification or addressing the solid sources I have brought forth. The user who reverted my addition wrote that: "human shielding was a very strong accusation", ignoring the content of the five sources and the fact that "genocide" is also a very strong accusation! I protest at this politically inclined silencing and deletion of content. I believe my edit should be restored.

Needed: 2005 Israel-Gaza conflict article

There is a need for an article about 2005 Israel-Gaza conflict. Thanks, IZAK (talk) 07:20, 17 March 2008 (UTC)

WP:OR, no such event exists per WP:RS.Greyshark09 (talk) 19:46, 28 April 2012 (UTC)
I don't understand how there can be a conclusion that an article on "2005 Israel-Gaza conflict" should not be created based on a subjective presumption that Original Research (?) would be involved, and on the reasoning that "no such event exists per WP:RS". What do Reliable Sources have to do with the existence or not of a 2005 timeline, and in particular, how do they negate such a creation? Erictheenquirer (talk) 14:44, 27 July 2014 (UTC)

2006

Together with 2008, 2012 and 2014, this year was critical in the complex interplay between Gaza in general, Fatah, Hamas and Israel. But the sub-section contains no discernable timeline; instead it is currently made up of salami slices for which no through-going (if existent) interconnection and contextual relation is displayed. There is no identification of a particular period of conflict, and no chain-of-events data to evaluate that as a whole.

Given the above, as a relative newcomer I post a pair of questions: Is it worthwhile to rewrite this sub-article, or does "Israel-Gaza Conflict - the 2006 timeline" deserve an article on its own so as to manage "length"? Erictheenquirer (talk) 14:53, 27 July 2014 (UTC)

2014 Gaza War

There really needs to be more focus given to the 2014 war. I know it just ended at the end of August but there are very long sections on the other war/events while only a paragraph on the 2014 war. Again I know this might take some time, but it was the longest and bloodiest of the wars. Just thought I'd make that point. I began adding some stuff to it myself, like the end date. Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 159.91.178.88 (talk) 23:24, 10 November 2014 (UTC)

Lead critique

Parts of the Lead contain unsupported attributes such as 'some', 'decreased', 'not fully' and 'not completely', together with text unsupported by the citation such as 'Hamas hoped' and 'Israel hoped'. It does not mention the ceasefire obligations. It needs to contain hard data in support. I am suggesting that the sub-section "2008 Hamas-Israeli ceasefire" from Gaza–Israel conflict is far more informative and better supported, and should therefore be substituted here. Erictheenquirer (talk) 11:48, 22 August 2014 (UTC)

Arbitrary part of Israel-Palestine history, arbitrary part of Gaza Strip history, suggestion this history only started after ~2006 arbitrary. And given the notes by Erictheenquirer above (bad lede, incorrect lede): why not AfD? -DePiep (talk) 23:51, 22 August 2014 (UTC)
Obvious bias. Sections repeatedly follow the pattern... '(some international party) condemns (some Palestinian action)' and then, almost as an aside, add '(party) also disapproves of (some Israeli action)'. Still, Wikipedia... US-ian perspective... not really that surprising. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.130.101.222 (talkcontribs) 06:45, 20 December 2014 (UTC)

Manipulation of International response

International response section starts with Ban Ki-Moon condemnation of the Qassam missiles element of the Palestinian resistance in Gaza, but does not quote him for also justifying it: "As oppressed peoples have demonstrated throughout the ages, it is human nature to react to occupation." http://www.haaretz.com/middle-east-news/1.699686

Also, it also states that Egypt is a belligerent in the conflict alongside Israel since 2014. That is inaccurate, as Egypt was a mediator. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Simpatico qa (talkcontribs) 11:40, 19 November 2016 (UTC)

2018 Border Protest

On the 8th of April I added a section on the current protests and fatalities. I used (2) pro-Palestinian stories and a single pro-Israeli story with three short sentences. The Al Jazeera story carried the photo of the slain Palestinian photographer and the likely ICC investigation. The Al Jazeera story mentioned the illegality of the military use of civilian cover which is important in any militarized border as well as the use of excessive force by a militarily superior force. The second Al Jazeera story critiqued the Hebrew language press. The Jerusalem Post story provided some depth and analysis in contrast, but was not developed in text of my edit. The three sentences were removed in favor of a single first day Al Jazeera story.

The current and developing news stories need some perspective and analysis. The editor who removed my three sentences in favor of a single sentence from a first day story lacks the updated facts of mortality and injuries as well as perspective and analysis after additional information is available. The edits have not improved the section and have not demonstrated a balanced view. I hope others will review the developing story and arrive at a consensus Church of the Rain (talk) 18:44, 11 April 2018 (UTC)

The content added was not neutral. You didn't present Palestinian actions and violence leading to the Israeli response.Icewhiz (talk) 07:32, 12 April 2018 (UTC)
The facts in regard to mortality are a good place to start. The most current figure from the Jerusalem Post is (32) fatalities. See http://www.jpost.com/Arab-Israeli-Conflict/Report-80-percent-of-Palestinians-killed-in-Gaza-border-crisis-were-terrorists-549511 .This story notes the alleged terrorist affiliations of the slain. That leaves the question of why they were shot i.e. proximity to the fence, violent actions, etc. Church of the Rain (talk) 22:24, 12 April 2018 (UTC)

Merge this article?

I can’t see any sources, either in this article, or outside, which describe a Gaza-Israel conflict between 2006 and today. All others contextualise it more broadly (e.g. tit-for-tat rockets and incursions had been ongoing ever since the Second Intifada) or more narrowly (the various operations for which we already have articles.

This seems to be WP:OR designed to fit the narrative that “Israel left Gaza and Gaza immediately started attacking it”.[7]

Onceinawhile (talk) 06:19, 18 May 2018 (UTC)

There definitely are sources that cover the conflict over a wider time span than one war. We can dicker over the time frame for the article. Rocket fire from gaza 2005-8 is not OR and is a well covered topic, often tied to 2009, 2012, and 2014. Whether the current post 2014 is related is perhaps a question.Icewhiz (talk) 06:31, 18 May 2018 (UTC)

Mossad/Shin-bet

@ImTheIP: - neither of the sources you added support Mossad Or Shin-Bet involvement. The book review (questionable source - but it is in the book) - describes an operation in Dubai. The Haaretz article describes the foiling of a West Bank Hamas cell's plans to bomb Tel Aviv. For the Mossad specifically, Gaza proper is outside of their general operational jurisdiction.Icewhiz (talk) 15:42, 29 November 2018 (UTC)

The cell(s) are believed to have been directed by Hamas in Gaza. ImTheIP (talk) 15:52, 29 November 2018 (UTC)
By that standard we could also add the border police (actually not a bad idea), police, fire fighters, etc. And you are connecting Mossad via Dubai how? Icewhiz (talk) 15:59, 29 November 2018 (UTC)
Aren't you being a little obtuse now? Orgs are listed if they are involved in the conflict in a non-civilian capacity. It's like asking the question "Can the opposing side kill them without feeling bad?" if you will. Yes, had the Israeli border police been deployed outside Gaza we would have listed them as they are routinely involved in violence against Palestinians [8]. But the Gazan border happens to be manned by the IDF and not the police, so we don't list them. ImTheIP (talk) 16:27, 29 November 2018 (UTC)
No, not at all, your source for the Mossad does not connect them to anything in Gaza. This article is about Israel/Gaza - not about Israel vs. the global Hamas movement.Icewhiz (talk) 17:06, 29 November 2018 (UTC)
Yes, you are definitely being obtuse if you claim that an operation involving Hamas doesn't also involve Gaza. ImTheIP (talk) 17:39, 29 November 2018 (UTC)

Append/Update to Timeline - October 2023

We need to add more here:

... In response, on October 8th, the government of Israel declared war on Hamas [1]. This was followed by their announcement of a “total” blockade of the Gaza Strip including a ban on food, water, electricity, fuel, supplies, and international humanitarian aid [2][3][4]. On October 13, the IDF dropped leaflets from above northern Gaza, ordering the total evacuation of the densely populated region's 1.1 million residents, within 24 hours. The order was condemned by the UN, claiming the it was 'impossible'. [5] Israel began its bombardment of Gaza immediately after the Hamas attacks, and in the first 6 days, claimed to have dropped 6000 bombs on the Gaza Strip [6]. Israel denied accusations by Human Rights Watch of using white phosphorus munitions in its ongoing military operations. [7] The allegations were later confirmed by Amnesty International’s Crisis Evidence Lab [8] Several accusations of genocide have been made [9][10][11][12], among them, Colombian President Gustavo Petro, who likened the situation to the actions of Nazi Germany [13].

That is unsourced, and patently untrue. Gaza-Israel conflict has been raging for a while. For example, Rachel Corrie was notable killed in 2003 after being crushed by Israeli bulldozers destroying Gaza homes. Further back, Gaza Strip played a major role in the First Initfada (1980s). Even further back, Israel conducted the Rafah massacre in 1956. Clearly, this has been going a while.VR talk 05:22, 11 December 2023 (UTC)

NPOV dispute-2012 Events

Trying to "control" info written regarding Israel's illegal actions is in itself bias and not promotion of peace, as writers of such content want the public to believe.

Content in the majority of Wiki's info is missing the vital information that Palestinians and other Arabs want a peaceful resolution. The content is also missing the vital info regarding Arab spring, who are asking for democracy and to live in peace.

Hateful content against the Palestinians is such:

  • pointing to info that is outdated, while new info regarding peaceful content is not given
  • pointing to info regarding the rare occurrences of suicide bombings, while blatantly dismissing info that the MAJORITY of Palestinians are participating in peaceful protests, along with their supporters.
  • pointing to books and hateful speeches regarding anti-Semite is a promotion of hate toward Palestinians. These rare speeches are not what the majority of Palestinians and Arabs believe in.
  • Also, info regarding Israeli individuals that are refusing to serve in the Israeli military due to its violent behavior toward Palestinians is also missing.

Pro-Israeli individuals and organizations that are stating in public they want peace with their neighbors, yet are writing content against Palestinians is the promotion of hate and violence. They are also agreeing with the MASS KILLINGS of Palestinians. Please note that this is hatred and violent behavior. The mass population is now seeing this and will not tolerate it.

The whole section concerning the latest operation is biased.

(I've done some changes but I think this section needs serious editing + there are no references)

1. It does not mention any Israeli casualties only Palestinian casualties

2. rockets where fired at Jerusalem as well

3. and these sentences sound POV:

  • " As is typical of Israeli attacks on the Palestinians"
  • "Israel addressed the nation stating it was using "targeted" and "precision" air strikes, however, the majority of buildings hit were residential and some were media buildings."
  • "The growing support for the Palestinians has been surprising to some Americans due to the lack of them seeing Palestinians' struggles in American media. Palestinians have received an unprecedented support from European and other countries due to seeing their hardships and living conditions while they are occupied by Israel."
  • " Israel's government decided to resort to a forceful military response. "

Somebody's got to clean it up. Cutting and pasting short version of lead of Operation Pillar of Defense (current name) with references might be best thing to do. Maybe leave a note on that article asking someone to do it. I'll do it at my leisure but busy right now. CarolMooreDC 18:47, 23 November 2012 (UTC)

Change the phrasing "The conflict originated with the Israeli withdrawal from Gaza in 2005"?

The phrasing "The conflict originated with the Israeli withdrawal from Gaza in 2005" is misleading since it is well known that the conflict has origins at least since 1948. After all, 70% of the population of Gaza are refugees from Israel well before 2005.

I propose we change it along with the following sentence to:

Following the Israeli withdrawal from Gaza in 2005, Hamas won the 2006 Palestinian legislative election. A civil war between Hamas and Fatah in 2007 culminated in Hamas gaining control over Gaza.

    Another table

@Onceinawhile: I added another table. This one to give an overview of the history of Gaza wars. I was inspired by it based on scheme of ordering the Israel-Gaza wars by Jean-Pierre Filiu. VR (Please ping on reply) 06:30, 20 January 2024 (UTC)

    Infobox

I removed the infobox for a few reasons:

    • The biggest reason was it gave WP:UNDUE weight to a long list of salafists, who are essentially irrelevant in most of Israel-Gaza conflict. It gave more space to salafists than to Hamas or Israel!
    • Not much is added by it. The casualty figures are best tabulated, as in the table I've added in the "Overview" section. They were out of date anyway
    • It would need to be unnecessarily long. The list of Israeli PMs alone (let alone defense ministers and IDF chiefs) that have presided over conflicts against Gaza is very long. To say nothing of the leaders of every Palestinian faction that has fought against Israel from Gaza. Most of that would again be WP:UNDUE for the lead.

First intifada Israeli death toll - wrong information

it is stated here that "During the First intifada, in the Gaza Strip alone, 142 Palestinians were killed, while no Israelis died"

It is misleading and false. Many,(and mostly) Israeli civilians were killed.

Palestinians committed hundreds of terror attacks against civilians inside the Israeli territories.

Again, this is misleading, creating a narrower point of view, shaping one's thought to side with the palestinians as if they are the only victim. Biased content. Missing details while mentioning others, as a repetitive strategy shown all over in this article, expanding on one's suffering and neglecting the other - isnt neutral as Wikipedia should be. 2A02:6680:2105:8104:799C:EB84:2E27:21E5 (talk) 16:51, 21 January 2024 (UTC)

This linked revision which re-added a claim that the Oct 7th counter attack killed "mostly women and children" has no support in the given citation. The cited article does not mention women or children, it just gives an estimate of the total people killed, so either a new citation should be added if it's indeed true or the unsupported claim should be removed again.

Shouldn't we say that the number of 27,000 death is according to the Hamas government? 82.36.70.45 (talk) 16:40, 15 February 2024 (UTC)

This number is widely accepted as accurate, although it includes Hamas fighters and other militants.
[This article](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Casualties_of_the_Israel%E2%80%93Hamas_war) includes citations to IDF estimates of Hamas fighters.
The most balanced thing would be to note both numbers – 27,000 dead Gazans of which as many as 30% (12,000) are Hamas fighters. Benjaminbergstein (talk) 08:38, 29 February 2024 (UTC)
I'm not married to this position, but I wonder whether that information wouldn't be more properly situated in the section on the 2023 war below? The lead just seems like a strange place to start delving into statistics on the identities of the dead, especially given how large this article's already is. In fact, I notice the current death toll is in the lead twice, with two different statistics (I assume the top one was first). I would suggest cutting the first mention of the current death toll in favor of the last (since the section goes chronologically) and, if anyone is so inclined, to add breakdowns of casualties further down, or simply to link to the page @Benjaminbergstein linked above. Arcendeight (talk) 12:57, 29 February 2024 (UTC)

There were far more deaths in 1948 alone than in the 2023-2024 Israel-Hamas War

Per Gelber, Yoav (2001). Palestine 1948: War, Escape and the Emergence of the Palestinian Refugee Problem (Second Edition (2006) ed.), p. 12, an estimated 112,000 Israelis died during the fighting in 1948 and between 51,100 and 63,500 Arabs. To say that the Israel-Hamas conflict which began in 2023 has a higher death toll than all other wars of the Arab-Israeli conflict is historically inaccurate. This point needs to be corrected. Under the "Impact" section, the information contained therein is misleading. Most notably, it utilizes press statements made by members of Channel 14 news as impacting the conflict. Such statements, without also citing statements of the other side, including statements made by the Arab language press, or, for example, the Queen of Jordan, who publicly denied the attacks on October 7th on mainstream Arabic language television, creates a biased interpretation of the conflict. Israel has multiple other news outlets, who present news in a less "politicized" manner. To pass off the statements of Channel 14 News as being indicative of any impact of this conflict is misinformation.Chipchiperoo (talk) 17:05, 3 March 2024 (UTC)

Concerns regarding unbiased and misleading topic

This article contains many points at hand that place it in a problematic position of unbiased and, at times, grossly misleading. The main issues are with the general description of the page, and the list of conflicts table. Suggestions for editors:

    1) Add a statement placing the Gaza conflict within the framework of the entire Isreal - Palestinian conflict. In addition, throughout the text, the conflict is staged as front of "Israel against Arabs", which is outright wrong and promotes hate speech. For instance - how would you count an Israeli-Arab killed in the conflict? All statements portraying this as an Arab-Israel conflict should be changed to Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

    2) Add reference to the Egyptian border control in addition to the Israeli one.

    3) Change wording of "Israel has fought 15 wars against the Gaza strip". A nation does not go to war on a region, but rather over political bodies or ethnic groups. In all the listed clashes, the IDF military actions were limited to a confrontation with specific military organizations (defined by Israel, and many other countries, as terror organizations). Perhaps the phrase more fitting will be: "Since 1948, 15 armed conflicts were fought between Israel and Palestinian armed forces in Gaza."

    4) The conflict list-table metrics is clearly designed to elicit an biased response from readers, and not to detail the stage of each conflict. Adding columns regarding the military organizations participating in the conflict, the instigator of the conflict, the resolution ending each conflict.

    5) Additional issues with the table: - Internal displacement is a non-informative metrics and needs to be removed. When displacement is done to create "empty zones" it is one thing, but when the displacement is temporary to prevent civilian casualties by IDF targeting of militants - it is a different story. - Unify the metrics of casualties to include killed only. - Remove "other impacts" column. It seems to just be a place to "cherry pick" facts or postulations that should be placed in context in the paragraph for each conflict.

The entire page is new - and was formed during the recent 2024 conflict in the region. It seems to be page dedicated to offer an alternative - confrontational - stance to the page informing people on the Israel-Palestinian conflict (detailed in an article of its own). This of its own is problematic and prolongs hate and strife, as many people fall into the traps of rampant disinformation. It would be right to issue a warning on the page, as it is far from delivering information in accordance to Wikipedia philosophy. Walking the Middle Ground (talk) 02:24, 8 April 2024 (UTC)

    october 2023

in the paragraph about October 2023 , there is some missing information:

sacre, 240 people were on the oxtober 7 attackkidnappe if them ost were civilians , the youngest was 8 months old and the oldest more than 80 years old. in the current negotiations between Israel a this war, one of the main issues is the demand for releas of 130 people still held in captivity by also, women who were mn captivity and came back after a "deal" with hammas, report sexual violence on the day of the attack and in the captivity in gaza. imas.ing ohis information causes disinformation. to include the info about the kidnapped does not mean cwithout taking a stand of pro-israel or pro- Palestinvi it is vital to write about the kidnapped civilians as a factor nn the cobflict and as a factor for the ability to reach ( or not reach) an end to this war. Extended-confirmed-protected edit request on 24 April 2024

This entire article solely describes the Palestinian narrative which at best is half truths and totally disregards many facts such as the tens of thousands of rockets that were shot on Israel since 2006 till October 2023, how Israel left Gaza on its own accord and how Hamas which is a renowned terrorist organization came into power supported by Gazans, the multiple Israeli attempts to offer peace confronted with the Hamas charter of death to Jews and much more. People read this as comprehensive truth when it clearly isn’t. This entire topic should be re-edited to reflect the full facts, or stated that it is edited solely according to Hamas narrative. Section on South Africa is missing

Section about South Africa is missing. This is probably a mistake but South Africa as taken Israel to the International Court of Justice and laid out a genocide case against Israel.

This is fact. Bubbles2143 (talk) 04:44, 17 May 2024 (UTC)

    Genocide Ruling

International Court of Justice says Israel’s policies in the occupied Palestinian territory amount to annexation.

The International Court of Justice (ICJ) has ruled that Israel’s continued presence in the occupied Palestinian territory is unlawful and should come to an end “as rapidly as possible”.

Nawaf Salam, president of the ICJ in The Hague, read out the nonbinding advisory opinion issued by the 15-judge panel on Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territory on Friday.

The judges pointed to a wide list of policies – including the building and expansion of Israeli settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, use of the area’s natural resources, the annexation and imposition of permanent control over lands and discriminatory policies against Palestinians – all of which it said violated international law.

The court said Israel has no right to sovereignty of the territories, is violating international laws against acquiring territory by force and is impeding Palestinians’ right to self-determination.

It said other nations were obliged not to “render aid or assistance in maintaining” Israel’s presence in the territory. It said Israel must end settlement construction immediately and existing settlements must be removed, according to a summary of the more than 80-page opinion read out by Salam.

Israel’s “abuse of its status as the occupying power” renders its “presence in the occupied Palestinian territory unlawful”, the court said.

“Israeli settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, and the regime associated with them, have been established and are being maintained in violation of international law,” the court said.

The court’s opinion was sought in a 2022 request from the United Nations General Assembly.

The ICJ, also known as the World Court, is the highest UN body for hearing disputes between states.

Israel captured the West Bank, Gaza Strip and East Jerusalem – areas of historic Palestine that the Palestinians want for a state – in a 1967 war. It has since built settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem and steadily expanded them. It also had settlements in Gaza before a 2005 withdrawal.

The UN and the vast majority of the international community consider the Palestinian territory as Israeli-occupied.

    ‘Watershed moment’

Palestinian Foreign Minister Riyad Maliki told reporters in The Hague that the ruling signalled a “watershed moment for Palestine, for justice and for international law”.

“The ICJ fulfilled its legal and moral duties with this historic ruling. All states must now uphold their clear obligations: no aid, no assistance, no complicity, no money, no arms, no trade, no nothing – no actions of any kind to support Israel’s illegal occupation,” he said.

Riyad Mansour, the Palestinian ambassador to the UN, said the ruling was a “significant step” in the direction of ending the occupation and attaining the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people, including the right to self-determination, statehood and the right of return.

The right to return is a demand that Palestinians who were forced from their homes in the 1948 Nakba and the 1967 Arab-Israeli war be allowed to return to them.

Mansour said his team would study the entire opinion and “dissect every sentence”.

“We will consult with an army of friends at the United Nations and in all corners of the globe,” he said, adding, “We will produce a masterpiece of a resolution” at the UN General Assembly.

Israel’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs rejected the opinion as “fundamentally wrong” and one-sided.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office issued a statement in which it called the ruling a “decision of lies” that distorted the truth and asserted that “the Jewish people are not occupiers in their own land”.

Jeffrey Nice, a human rights barrister, told Al Jazeera that it will be hard for world leaders to completely “disregard” the ICJ ruling even though it is nonbinding.

“This is one part of the legal system saying enough is enough,” he said.

He said it would also be “difficult for the interested, informed, concerned public not to say, ‘It’s time Israel put its house in order.'”

Al Jazeera’s senior political analyst, Marwan Bishara, said: “There is a lot of room for hope that this ruling will support a movement, an international movement, across the board in the West and elsewhere in the world in favour of more sanctions, more pressure on Western governments to put more pressure on Israel.”

In a separate case brought by South Africa, the ICJ is consideringallegations that Israel is committing genocide in its war on Gaza.

A preliminary ruling has already been made in that case with the court ordering Israel to prevent and punish incitement to genocide and to increase provisions of humanitarian aid.

In May, the ICJ had also ordered Israel to halt its offensive on Rafah, a city in southern Gaza, citing “immense risk” to hundreds of thousands of Palestinians taking shelter there. But Israel has continued its attacks on Gaza, including Rafah, in defiance of the UN court. 2603:7080:7F01:2C41:5403:9602:F1F5:4B2C (talk) 19:58, 26 August 2024 (UTC)

Israel soldiers arrested for rape - 07-29-2024

"JERUSALEM — Chaos broke out at an Israeli military base holding Palestinian detainees Monday, as far-right demonstrators rallied after nine reservists were detained in connection to allegations of “serious abuse of a detainee.” The detentions of the reservists who were serving at the prison followed months of international pressure and domestic legal scrutiny over conditions inside Sde Teiman, a facility on a military base in the Negev desert that holds Palestinian detainees captured in Gaza. Videos on social media Monday showed a crowd rattling the base’s metal gates and then running inside behind a member of the country’s parliament. “That is Zvi Sukkot,” shouted one of the protesters, before the far-right lawmaker slipped through the gate. Online, political allies, including those in Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s cabinet, quickly seized on the moment. “I’m calling on the chief military prosecutor, get your hands off the reservists,” Bezalel Smotrich, the finance minister, wrote on X. “Take your hands off the reservists,” posted Itamar Ben Gvir, Israel’s far-right national security minister, who oversees the prison system."
